I tried to root using Kingroot v5.2 but nothing happened. Maybe I'll just wait for now.

We need to wait the bootloader unlocker released by asus first. So we can make an custom recovery then root the devices.

How do we know that asus already gives us its bootloader unlocker? Does asus release it via its official web?

That's the problem. We don't know actually when will Asus makes us a a tool like the earlier Zenfone series. We just can guessing and waiting. This device isn't much popular like other devices.

The bootloader unlock key is within the phone itself. From TAS: "Obtain the key. Run this command for that in the command window. This will save the key into a new file called key.txt on your PC.
echo > key.txt
Unlock the bootloader. Finally!
fastboot oem get_unlock_key key.txt
Done. Your ZenFone 4 is not bootloader unlocked. Run the command below to reboot into bootloader mode again, and it shall say Unlocked now.
fastboot reboot-bootloader"

if you really wanna go that route, you can
Code:
fastboot oem unlock

I just read that post. Is there a way I could root the phone without the usb storage getting formatted? Since it says in the post that the OEM unlock formats the USB storage. I've already loaded up a lot of stuff in my phone and I don't want to go through the whole process again.

nope, when you unlock it whipes everyhing as a security precaution.
anything on "SD Card" can be copied off and then put back on when its done.
anything on "internal storage" like game saves and app data will be lost because u cant access it without being root in the first place.
but I have an idea for getting data back after unlocking but I have yet to try it...
dun kn y just cant unlock the bootloader after following the steps!
i root my nexus 1 using 1 click root, so was hoping 1 click root can be use for nexus s soon...

[ROOT] Superboot - Nexus 7 WiFi / 3G root solution

Introducing.... Superboot!
Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Superboot r4 - DOWNLOAD - MD5: f53825a2df09277f899b6738b3a059d5
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Turn off the phone then turn on with the 'volume up' and 'volume down' buttons both pressed to enter the bootloader (as pictured below)
- WINDOWS - double click 'superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-mac.sh' followed by './superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-linux.sh' followed by './superboot-linux.sh'
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!
Enjoy!

I was having trouble with the other two methods once inside CWM (something to do with the Windows driver), but this worked flawlessly. I can live without CWM for now.

I've got a question I hope won't bother you to answer, Paul.
My goal with my Nexus 7 when it arrives is to be able to load up Titanium Backup Pro and restore some of my Games (App+Data). I' d like to know if I understand the process right to get to that point and still be able to receive OTA updates.
The first thing I should do when I turn on my device is boot into the bootloader and oem fastboot unlock.
Next, I should follow your instructions to chmod and install the superboot package.
When my device reboots after this, should I be able to update to 4.1.1 and retain root so I can install TBpro?

CF Auto root works amazingly well. It will unlock your bootloader if not done already then root. PSA:If you bootloader is not unlocked it WILL wipe your device.
You can also boot to a recovery without flashing it permanently

I find it to be more trouble to use an auto-tool than it is to simply open up a command window and "fastboot oem unlock".
Phew, tough.
The best question of all for these people who want to do that without learning how to easily use fastboot is: what purpose are you rooting it for? I can't imagine what you could be doing that doesn't involve doing some simple learning about how fastboot and adb work.

Looking for just root

I have just got a new droid maxx from verizon. They sent the phone with 4.4. Could I just flash back to 4.2.2?
Thanks
No sir you cannot. At this point in time there is no way to flash back unless you have an unlocked bootloader.

Sorry my friend (OP), root is NOT at all possible now. The method to get BL UL code is also closed now. So you need to wait for root procedure from jcase @ August 2014 (unless you have bought Dev edition). But that root procedure is also NOT persistent one (will loose root access on restarting phone) and limited access to system and so NOT as useful as earlier, I think...
Thanks
question
I just got my unlock code for the bootloader. Can i get root from there?

Right
Since i got my code I don't see a step by step. Thats really what i'm looking for.

To unlock the command is fastboot oem unlock <your code>
To get root you need to flash twrp: fastboot flash recovery <twrp file> once that is done boot into recovery from the fastboot menu, in recovery he reboot, reboot system. It will ask if you want to install root, Swype to install. Your phone will reboot and you'll be rooted.

How to root T-mobile pixi 7?

Tested vroot and framaroot but both are not working. This is a cheap tablet provided by Tmobile just these recent weeks. I do not think the root method is the same as the other pixi 7 sold in other places since they have different processors, S410 for Tmo version. Any one knows?

You can try flashing a custom recovery amd then glaahimg root update.zip.
