Looking for just root - Droid Ultra Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just got a new droid maxx from verizon. They sent the phone with 4.4. Could I just flash back to 4.2.2?
Thanks

No sir you cannot. At this point in time there is no way to flash back unless you have an unlocked bootloader.

Sorry my friend (OP), root is NOT at all possible now. The method to get BL UL code is also closed now. So you need to wait for root procedure from jcase @ August 2014 (unless you have bought Dev edition). But that root procedure is also NOT persistent one (will loose root access on restarting phone) and limited access to system and so NOT as useful as earlier, I think...

Thanks

question
I just got my unlock code for the bootloader. Can i get root from there?

To unlock the command is fastboot oem unlock <your code>
To get root you need to flash twrp: fastboot flash recovery <twrp file> once that is done boot into recovery from the fastboot menu, in recovery he reboot, reboot system. It will ask if you want to install root, Swype to install. Your phone will reboot and you'll be rooted.

[Q] Root without unlocking bootloader on ICS 4.0.3?

Hey guys I'm trying to keep the bootloader locked and have root access. Just got the OTA ICS update. Is this possible? I'm still stock everything.
No. Unlock it now if you want root. Unlocking it wipes everything off the phone.
Best time to do it is when the phone is new or now that you just got 4.0 you can wipe and fresh start with the new os

Thanks dude, I saw this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=935819
I tried to follow Part 3, to root without unlock and wipe but I get an error.
Thanks a lot, I'm just worried about warranty. Does Samsung care about unlocked bootloaders?
I just came from a HTC handset and HTC didn't seem to care too much.
The bootloader can be relocked on this device.
I've tried all the guides. The phone keeps reflashing the stock recovery and I flashed the superuser.zip I can't seem to get root access. I've unlocked bootloader.
Stock roms have a script in them that overwrites the recovery every boot. Probably already a 100 plus threads about it here. Search for it.
If you flashed the latest su.zip with a custom recovery you have root. You may have just flashed the binary and need to get superuser app from market or you flashed the old zip prior to ice cream sandwich.

[Q] Rooting Xoom without bootloader unlock?

Hi there, I had a look at universal xoom boot at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241 and I think it works with the UK model of the Wifi only xoom.
I noticed that you have to unlock the bootloader which involves wiping the device. I don't want to do that as I have tons of stuff I want to keep and stuff I can't lose.
I was thinking could you flash it through recovery mode by using the adb command
Code:
adb reboot recovery
When it rebooted in recovery there were three options, apply update from SD card, factory reset/wipe and wipe cache. If I put the zip onto an SD card and applied update in recovery will it work? I mean the zip on the universal xoom root page that says to flash cwm.
Has anyone tried this and does it work?
Thanks for any guidance in advanced
Chris
Anyone know?
You have to unlock. this is why people recommend the day you get the Xoom unlock it, even if you don't plan to root.

Don't think it'll work because the locked bootloader/recovery should verify that an update has been created and signed by motorola. If you unlock, your bootloader won't check such signatures if you flash through fastboot, and the modded recoverys will do just about whatever they want
However, there may be a way to root your xoom without unlocking, there are enough devices out there that cannot be unlocked at all and are still able to be rooted. As far as I know, no one has tried finding a security flaw in the xooms software so far, though, as it's easy as pie to just unlock the device
back up then unlock

[ROOT] Superboot - Nexus 7 WiFi / 3G root solution

Introducing.... Superboot!
Superboot is a boot.img that when booted, will root your device the first time you boot (installing su and the superuser APK). No need to flash any partitions, no need to mess around with ADB, no messing with the contents of your data partition, no overwriting the shipped ROM on your device, just boot the boot image using the instructions below and you're done!
APPLY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Superboot r4 - DOWNLOAD - MD5: f53825a2df09277f899b6738b3a059d5
How to use Superboot - Windows, Linux and OSX
- Download the Superboot zip file above and extract to a directory
- Put your device in bootloader mode - Turn off the phone then turn on with the 'volume up' and 'volume down' buttons both pressed to enter the bootloader (as pictured below)
- WINDOWS - double click 'superboot-windows.bat'
- MAC - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-mac.sh' followed by './superboot-mac.sh'
- LINUX - Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type 'chmod +x superboot-linux.sh' followed by './superboot-linux.sh'
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!
Enjoy!

I've got a question I hope won't bother you to answer, Paul.
My goal with my Nexus 7 when it arrives is to be able to load up Titanium Backup Pro and restore some of my Games (App+Data). I' d like to know if I understand the process right to get to that point and still be able to receive OTA updates.
The first thing I should do when I turn on my device is boot into the bootloader and oem fastboot unlock.
Next, I should follow your instructions to chmod and install the superboot package.
When my device reboots after this, should I be able to update to 4.1.1 and retain root so I can install TBpro?

If the BL is unlocked you don`t need a PC to flash and modify your phone. Just download a custom recovery (.img file) and flash it with Flashify from Play.
-Edit- missread and assumed you had root. Nope can`t flash custom software from third (stock) recovery.

I was just about to say that. I've used flashify before. I know how to root with a custom recovery, I was just curious if there was a way to do it on the move.
Sent from my Nexus 5
There isn't. Android blocks access to all / (root) by default. The only way to root android from within Android itself is to take advantage of an exploit but as yet there doesn't seem to be one for KK /N5.
All unlocking the bootloader does is allow you to fastboot flash a custom recovery. Rooting from a recovery is easy because android is running therefore not "blocking" / (root). But since the recovery partition is on the / root of the device, you cannot flash a recovery whilst android is running....unless you have root access.
....so fastboot flash a recovery is the only way to get root, which requires obviously a computer.
Hope this helps to understand

Reason I asked. When I had my Nexus 4, all I did was download SuperSU. It was a stock device. But supersu asked to update us binary and it rooted the phone from there. I then downloaded a app to unlock the bl and did it all without a computer. Just curious if this could be done on the n5 as well. But I guess not. Thanks everyone.

on the n4, and n5, there are apps that can lock and unlock the bootloader. but you need root for that. if you downloaded supersu and it asked to update the binaries, that means that your device had root(old) already, and just had its bootloader relocked..

Root without unlocking bootloader?

Is there any way to root the Oneplus without unlocking the bootloader and wiping the device?
Just unlock the bootloader and root. You're making it too difficult for yourself, the whole point of the bootloader being locked is to prevent changes being made to the system.
Its like saying, you're going to break your windows to get into your house when you can just unlock the door.
Just unlock the bootloader and flash supersu for root.

yes, just run fastboot boot recovery.img and flash the superuser zip there. dont listen to people that say "just unlock bootloader!" because you dont need to and it sets a tamper flag which can be used against you if you try to warranty.

I'm a bit lost here....
To root the phone with locked bootloader, man has to have an "exploit"...which is not discovered (yet) for OPO.
And now you are saying that the exploit and hence an unlocked bootloader is not needed and we can just push SuperSU into system via adb....
Please elaborate how it's possible?????

What he said. The OPO does not need a "exploit" to root the phone with a locked bootloader because you can unlock it simply by typing a command.
You can't flash SuperSU without having access to a custom recovery such as TWRP/CWR which requires a unlocked bootloader.

I think you mixing the things up.... I'm NOT talking that a man needs to have an exploit in order to unlock bootloader.
I'm wondering if OPO system (or better to say CM) designed in a such way that it can be indeed rooted without exploit and with still locked bootloader by simply pushing SuperSU.
That what I want to hear from @The Jack of Clubs.

No you cannot root the phone without a exploit with a locked bootloader. If that was the case, then the OPO would not be Google certified for Google Apps.

That's why I got so exited and anxious to hear some explanation and elaboration from him!
You do not need to unlock the bootloader to root. The locked bootloader only protects the kernel and recovery partitions. Do not run "fastboot oem unlock" and do not run "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". Instead just run "fastboot boot recovery.img" and flash the supersu zip from there. I've done this already. I know because I'm writing this on my rooted and bootloader locked oneplus.

Thank you very much for some enlightening
I know about the recovery trick, always was doing this way and never bother with the custom one.
But the information about the rooting in a such way comes to the big surprise!
Well in this case I just hope it's not a flaw in CM build and it will stay this way and won't be fixed in next OTAs

I did this... It works. Installed SuperSU using this method, I"m running Titanium Backup Pro, which requires root.
having read and write access in an alternate environment and being able to load a kernel in untrusted space kind of negates the point of the locked bootloader. which is why on something like a nexus 5, you have to unlock to root. its a security measure to block alternative access and destroying data when tampered. the international/cyanogenmod version of the phone may be running a different version of the bootloader that is on the chinese/coloros phone. you do see a cyanogenmod logo when booting into fastboot. so cyanogen may have an alternative fastboot that gives you access like this so you can mod you phone.
as far as root goes, theres two parts, the su binary which has to be copied to the system partition, and the app that gives root permissions to apps (a sudo app). you can install supersu from the playstore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en but it doesnt do anything without the su binary. so when you are in recovery, which gives you full write access to the system partition, you flash the superuser zip, which copies the su binary to the system partition.

I can confirm that this method definitely works. My Oneplus is rooted, I never had to unlock the bootloader and my data is safe. Thank you!
I really think that this thread has to go to the General from Q&A and has become sticky.
Also these findings has to be communicated to @Chromium in order to enhance his Guide
This method works, I can confirm also.
