[Q] Root without unlocking bootloader on ICS 4.0.3? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I'm trying to keep the bootloader locked and have root access. Just got the OTA ICS update. Is this possible? I'm still stock everything.

No. Unlock it now if you want root. Unlocking it wipes everything off the phone.
Best time to do it is when the phone is new or now that you just got 4.0 you can wipe and fresh start with the new os

Thanks dude, I saw this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=935819
I tried to follow Part 3, to root without unlock and wipe but I get an error.
Thanks a lot, I'm just worried about warranty. Does Samsung care about unlocked bootloaders?
I just came from a HTC handset and HTC didn't seem to care too much.

The bootloader can be relocked on this device.

I've tried all the guides. The phone keeps reflashing the stock recovery and I flashed the superuser.zip I can't seem to get root access. I've unlocked bootloader.

Stock roms have a script in them that overwrites the recovery every boot. Probably already a 100 plus threads about it here. Search for it.
If you flashed the latest su.zip with a custom recovery you have root. You may have just flashed the binary and need to get superuser app from market or you flashed the old zip prior to ice cream sandwich.

Are u using a windows computer or Mac?

This method

allows anyone to root a Nexus S without unlocking the bootloader.
I tested it on my i9023 running stock ICS and it worked perfectly.

Hi,
I used the program Unlockroot. It rooted my phone even without having to unlock the bootloader without any problem... (Nexus S stock 4.0.3)

You can't flash ROMs without unlocking the bootloader!

[Q] What is the best option for my situation?

So I have a ns4g that I attempted to root but got hung up and am now stuck with a unlocked bootloader but no super user. So as I see it I have 3 options (if you see others PLEASE TELL ME)
1. somehow get my bootloader locked again and go back to stock (unroot)
2. keep unlocked bootloader and eventually accept ics ota (will this be ok or will having an unlocked bootloader much things up with the ota?)
3. figure out a way to finish the root process I'm sort of in the middle of (aka get super user)
If it matters I am running 2.3.7 and using a macbook running 10.7.2
What would you guys suggest?

flash a custom recovery(cwm or twrp) via fastboot, then flash a custom rom(and gapps). thats all you need. all the custom roms out there have root. you dont have to flash superuser.
How do I flash cwm? I think when I did this before I had the wrong version as it didn't allow for me to mount after I unlocked the bootloader
Use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250583 to root! It will recognize that your bootloader is already unlocked and skips to flashing CMW and giving you root! There's a youtube video showing it in action if you get stuck by qbking!
Will this work with osx?

heres the latest version of cwm recovery for the nexus s(not ns4G) http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
heres where all the cwm recoveries can be found, including the ns4g http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Ok, now how do I get that img on my phone?
The cwm for ns4g that I just downloaded that is
I'm fairly content just waiting for the google ics ota... when that comes will it mess my phone up because of my unlocked bootloader?
or even better can someone write me instructions to lock my bootloader?
I found this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875630
But obviously there are steps before this to have the terminal put these commands towards the phone.

look at part 3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
only you dont need superuser, any custom rom has root.
Ok, I think I just want to relock my phone and wait for the ota...
I've tried just going into terminal and typing "fastboot oem lock" and it says that the command is not found... what did I do wrong?
You don't need to lock bootoader to get ota.
I've read before that accepting an ota with an unlocked bootloader will brick your phone... Can anyone else confirm that it's ok to accept the eventual ota with an unlocked bootloader?

[Q] Help updating kernel

Hey, I am picking up a used Cincinnati Bell one s from a friend later today. I know he unlocked or did something via the htc method but other then that I think it is s-on and not super cid (however I am not completely sure. I will know for sure when I get it today) I know the phone hasn't had the official JB update yet. When I get the phone later today I was wanting to get the official update so I can install the newer roms. I do know it has a JB rom on it now but he said it is having some issues and I would rather just update it officially and go from there.
What would be the best way to do this? I know a few months ago the friend I am getting it from restored his stock rom nandroid and tried to do the ota but it kept failing, I am assuming it is because of the unlocked bootloader but I dont know for sure.
What steps can I take to get the updated 3.14 kernel?
Thanks in advance.

Not getting official update even when the ROM is stock can be due to
- Custom Recovery presence
- Root
- removal of any bloatware apps
- Unlocked bootloader (not sure, but should be relocked before update )
Never update with SuperCID, Brick is the result.

- Root removal: restore stock OS (from RUU/OTA/NANDROID)
- Custom Recovery removal: flash a stock recovery. (Via RUU or fastboot)
- locking bootloader: via fastboot
You will be needing HTC drivers (standalone or HTC sync), ADB+Fastboot files and from this folder adb+fastboot commands will be given.

Stock/custom Recoveries are actually variant specific. If you have S4 version, download this.
And if you have S3 version, I don't have a recovery at hand but you can extract it from RUU/OTA files or simply ask for it in respective sections.

[Q] Need help with unrooting VZW GSIII

Hey everyone,
Recently I rooted my GS3 using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
After a successful root, I tried to run CWM and all of the sudden it rebooted to a screen that said "software not authorized by Verizon Wireless". This is not so much a problem since I can just boot into downloading mode and then cancel and it will boot normally, but it seems I have tripped the flash counter.
My question is whether or not you think my bootloader is unlocked. I want to unroot my phone because I realize that I do not know enough information about rooting to continue with custom ROMs and I am having connectivity issues after I rooted so I want to go back to factory settings. I want to know the best way to unroot my phone, I have read that I need to use Triangle Away, but it says that it will brick my phone if I use it on a locked bootloader, so I am not sure what to do at this point.
Please let me know if anyone has some suggestions!
Thanks :good:

Sounds like you understand most of it, you just didn't unlock your bootloader properly.
Download ez unlock version 1.2 and install that, you can unlock your bootloader from there. At that point you can flash any custom rom or use your custom recovery without issues. But if you want to go back to stock...
Download triangle away then run it, that will reset your flash counter.
Then Odin flash a stock Rom, then accept any ota needed, then you're completely stock.

I think so, you mentioned that the app needed you to have the bootloader unlocked. EZ unlock is how you do that, so I would do that first.

Do i have to be rooted to flash a rom or just have a unlocked bootloader

do i only need to have a unlocked boot loader to flash a rom. or is root needed
Just an unlocked bootloader.
This. If it modifies boot.IMG you'll need an unlocked bootloader for any phone.
Root access has nothing to do with flashing a custom ROM
You can flash a custom ROM and not have root access
You can have root access without a custom ROM
You need an unlocked bootloader for both (unless you use Towelroot or whatever, which I don't recommend).
Read some threads in the first link of my signature.

You either have a modified system file or a file left over from being rooted. The easiest and fastest solution would be to fastboot flash the system image. You could of course flash the factory image.

That sucks! ; ) I've always used the sdk so I don't know a whole lot about towelroot. Your bootloader will have to be unlocked to flash the factory image. If you can reroot you could then use the app BootUnlocker.
I just looked and I don't have the stock mixer_paths.xml anymore or I would link to it.

Flashing the factory image or a system image will always unroot your device. Lock the bootloader using the sdk. The command is fastboot oem lock.
Is there a reason why OP needs locked bootloader? Just leave it unlocked, unless you have a really strong reason to. It will spare you hassles in the future.
That said, after unlocking bootloader, you can (at least, we could in the past) flash the update file through twrp (you just need to fastboot boot twrp.img and then flash the update), that will tell you exactly what file(s) doesn't match. Those are the ones you need to replace back to stock.
Edit: read also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2949987. Maybe new selinux stuff is playing funny?
