Back button not always working - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
Since the beginning I have a weird issue that my back button sometimes wont work.
If I touch the screen somewhere else the back button works again.
Currently updated to latest firmware for my model 1.27.401.5 and using viper 1.7.0 but problem still exists sometimes.
Any ideas? Or more people who have had this issue?

For me it's the back button and the recent apps button. Started a few weeks ago. Doesn't always happen, but does more often than not. Restarting doesn't fix it.
I presume it's because of either an update or app that I loaded, but don't know what.

hi, same probleme for me back button and led indicator and recent apps button dont work
i full wipe and same dont work plz help me
i tested an othe custom rom and button not work also
it did to me overnight

Help me please

Just out of curiosity, what type of screen protector if any are you using?

I personally don't have a screen protector and I'm also running the latest ViperU Rom....and the only problem I have with both the recent and back button is that they don't have a "wide touch sensitive zone" you have to touch exactly where the button is....which is hard when it's not lit all the time...

I bon t use any screen protector me too

I use skinomi

anyone found the solution to the adressed problem?

Same problem here. Back button not working sometimes, same with viper, leedroid or stock rom, with screen protector or without.

What version of software do you guys have?
My software number is 1.27.401.5 and now im looking on htc offical page there is an update 1.28.617.6 which is newer than my own, but when i check system update it doesnt offer anything... Sry for bad english

Just started to me. I noticed something smudged on my screen part of it covered the back button. I tried to turn the screen off before wiping it off but every time I tried to wipe it off the screen would activate and the back button capacitive action would keep kicking on. Now I notice neither my back button or right side "menu"button work or light up anymore.
Have only had this phone a few months. This would be a non starter for me. Anyone have any fixes?

Hi,
Have the same problem with my HTC U11 life, both buttons are away. Only the home Button works. How could I fix this problem?

Hello ! I have the same problem with htc u11, the recent application button is working alone, without being touched, lately it's getting more and more often. How can this extremely troublesome issue be solved? Thank you !

Hi, I've had my HTC U11 since launch and it's always had what I would describe as an 'intermittent fault' with the back button. I've just upgraded the software for I think the 3rd time and it's still the same. Now on v 2.33.401.10. I find a little extra pressure usually works but it's annoying, especially when everything else works so well. It's the same whether I have a screen protector on or not and it's not an accuracy thing as I can hit the same spot 20 times and while most will work, there will be patches or 2 or 3 presses where it won't respond. A solution would be much appreciated!

The Back and Apps buttons never worked nicely for me, it was kinda hard to find and press with naked screen and with glass protector almost impossible. However, I have the Glove mode always on and the buttons work fine. In Oreo Settings → Display, gestures & buttons → Glove mode.
But sometimes (I guess when the phone is hot; when charging OR on battery so no charger issue) the squeeze is overly sensitive or there are taps at the top edge of the display when nothing (fingers, metal nor anything else conductive) is nearby the area, in extreme cases it starts pulling down the notification drawer and even opens notifications by itself. It's rare now, if it gets more often, I'll probably claim warranty.

So do I.... I also have the problem with the screen buttons. The "back button" usually works fine and forget to work 1/10 times, however the right "multiwindow button" makes me crazy. Often when I hold the phone in my hand, this button lives with its own life and turn on the multiwindow mode (as it "presses" by itself 2-3 times in a row). At the begining I thought thah mayby I'm pressing it by a part of my palm, but I after observation I realised it goes whithout my contribution. I'm sick and tired.

Screen won't turn on after it fades?

Hey, I've got a weird problem, my Fuze won't turn on once it fades after not using it. I've tried to press all the buttons and it won't work, I have to physically slide the qwerty keyboard out in order to make my screen reappear again. Does anyone else have this issue and is there a resolution?
I have a flashed Fuze with the TiR v8R WWE ROM on it
kinda obvious, but have you tried the power button at the top?

I've seen the same thing on the TP (European, stock WWE) that I'm testing. No matter what button you press, the unit will not 'wake up'. I hadn't tried sliding the keyboard -- I'd just automatically reached for the stylus to press the Soft Reset, which got it going again.
Apparently, there's another whole thread of other people with this problem.

Yes, actually, that wakes it up as well, but it is very annoying to have to press the power button every single time I want to check my phone. I thought, being a touch phone, that a simple fingertouch would awaken it. I can receive calls but the screen won't turn on so I have no clue who is calling. Could it be a radio issue? Would installing another radio help? This is bugging me to no end
I'm still having this problem anyone have any ideas

HTC Touch Pro power on button problem

Hi guys, I find this quite annoying and wish there is a mod for this. I don't know about other HTC Touch Pro owners but i find my fone quite sensitive.........it's "EASILY" turned on by a single "SHORT" press of the power button.
I didn't even hold it for 1 second, if i suddenly press or tap on it really quick, for not even a second, it turns on.
In case ppl don't understand and tell me that maybe my fone was on in the first place but just have the backlight off, and with a single tap on the power button, the backlight goes back on again. I knew that already. But what the problem really is, is that it's totally off, and when i tap the power on button, it turns on, i.e it vibrates and shows the welcome screen and all that other startup animation.
Is there a way to increase the delay of the finger-press on the power button? Coz it's so annoying that it gets turned on when i don't want it to, especially since this fone's weakness is that it hogs battery even though i've already applied tons of tweaks etc to lower the performance and increase battery life......
Oh and i have another problem, i find the signal kinda weak, is there a program or tweak to increase the signal?? Coz on my old phone Sony Ericsson W950i, the signal is great and I never have bad signal problems with it. But using HTC Touch Pro, i have this problem. This only happens when i'm at Uni, but it's not like they have bad reception or signal blockers there like how schools or colleges have. Just that when i'm inside buildings and there're tons of other buildings around, i can't send the txt coz of bad signals and it's bloody annoying, but using my W950i works fine.....
also I noticed that when i type a txt message using the hardware keyboard, it seems to fail to send most of the time, but only when i'm in UNI. But if i switch to the software keyboard, the one that you use ur fingers or stylus, then when i send the message it often works compare to using hardware keyboard.......any ideas?
Problem No 1: Try Touch Lock Pro
Problem No 2: Try to burn the newest RadioROM.
thx but i'm not trying to lock my phone, so i don't think TouchLock Pro is what i need.......
My Raphael turns also on after pressing the power button for a little few moment. With touchlock Pro you can prevent that you mistake your Raphael. I hope you can understand what I write in my "own" english
Ok so i've got it installed now and went through all the settings but couldn't find anything that can delay the power-on button press, I still have this problem. The app is a screen-lock app, there aren't any options regarding to power-on delays.......
plz tell me what settings etc to use.
I've never said that you can fix your problem with TouchLock Pro. With this you prevent to use your Raphael when you press your power button accidentally.
ya but that's only useful when my fone is on and it locks the phone but i'm trying to prevent my fone from turning on in the first place if i accidentally press the power on button for not even 1 second, because then it will turn on and i don't want that.
same problem here...the phone I thought I had turned off was back on, because accidently it got touched by something else in my luggage.
The only solution which to me is unsatisfactory, is to take out the battery so that it cannot power up.
C'mon...there has to be a better solution than this, no???

wow yay finally someone else other than me also report having the same problem, boy am i glad to know that i'm not the only one having this problem, i thought it was just something wrong with my fone and not all HTC Touch Pros....
i can't believe there aren't any results on Google, no forum discussions or solutions to this whatsoever. Also, nobody seemed to report this problem or come up with a solution on XDA as well as other forums i use like PPCgeekz or WMusers etc.........which is odd considering how this problem is quite annoying, that if u suddenly power on the fone by accident, it can drain battery life and god knows HTC Touch Pro has a crap battery life.............
I think that htc has done a bad job testing the powerbutton on the tp2.
There are some other things like weith, thikness and batterylife that could be improved but the powerbutton issue is realy a BIG bug.
Why they didn't make a slidebutton or a timeout between push and activation?
A dobble tap on the powerbutton could also be a solution.
The next rom shoold have a improvement about this button.
People, please react on the powerbutten problem so someone can fix this.
Thanx

Leaving the Touch Pro (Raphael) for some minutes without battery will stop the clock. So, when you put back on the battery and power up the device, the clock will display the wrong time. The time when you remove the battery.
This is hardware related.
Can produced different symptoms though.
Facts Behind the Power Button
If take a look at the inside of the powerbutton, there are 2 points making contact when you press the button. If you press it, the software will recognize this and the screen will turn off.
If you press it long enough you'll get the "QuickShutdown" message.
But, if water/alchohol/liquid gets underneath the button, the 2 points may be making contact, because water/alcohol conducts.
The button is very weak. Due to this, it may not properly work if you have used it for a long time.
As a result, despite the fact that you hit hibernate/sleep/suspend on the hardware power button = yes, the screen fades to black. But IT IS STILL ON. That explains the battery being drained.
Solution:
Open the phone hardware. Clean the power button connector manually.

i heart everyone talking about the sleep of death and to be honest, i havent really experienced this, but i definatley do have an intermitent power on and off button problem on my touch pro 2.
i read on some other forum that it could possibly be the slider that is casuing the problem. but to be honest, the button its self feels fine and looks fineand when i does work it works a treat. i havent had any water damage done to it what so ever. so im not sure , i am new too all this self help mobile stuff. so please excuse my ignorance. Ive doen the usual hard reset, button works for a few hours then calls it a day. soft rest, was working up until this week. i cant get ot to boot up again, while fiddling with the batter and a power lead. but the power button is so intermitent its driving me nuts. id be so grateful if anyone could shine any form of light on this. thanks in advance

Power Button Issue

I have been having odd power button issues since updating to 2.3.4. It is almost like it is getting stuck or something.
Sometimes when I hit the power button to turn off the screen, the screen goes off for half a second then comes back on. This also happens when going from off to on (i.e. flicker on then back off), but it seems rarer.
Sometimes when I hit the home button (and just the home button), it takes a screenshot like I am hitting the button as well even though I am not.
All of this is fixed by just hitting the power button a few times.
Needless to say it is annoying. I thought it might be something mechanical, but I took the case off the back and the issue still occurred. It also seems like the button is clicking then unclicking (i.e. not getting stuck). I had no issues prior to updating to 2.3.4.
Anyone else had this happen or know a fix or workaround?
Yes! I have the same exact problem after the update!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one.
It's very annoying.
My backlight turns on by itself randomly and often if you press the power button to turn the screen off, it goes off then comes back on or flickers on and off. The power button doesnt always turn the screen back on either.
It also gets stuck where I press the home screen and it keeps taking pictures.
HTC better fix this!

I have the exact same problem too since upgrading! I have disabled the screenshot function in build.prop but that only stops the repeated screenshots part of the problem. The main problem with the power button still persists.
I'm having this too, its come and gone to different extents - pretty sure it was happening a bit before the update though.
I'm worried it is mechanical, I couldn't get it to happen with the back cover off but it could have just been coincidence. I can live with having to press the button again every so often but the screenshot thing annoys the hell out of me!
Since the update I've experienced an issue with my power button as well. Sometimes when I hit the button to turn the screen on, nothing happens. At first I thought it was just me but it happens at least a couple of times a day and never happened before the update.
I don't normally turn my screen off by pressing the power button so I can't report on that. Guess I should count my blessing that the screen shot function is not acting up.
Thanks for posting cause was beginning to think it was just me.
FIX!
I found a fix for this, in your build.prop remove the framework line for screen shots and then go in recovery and whipe cache partition twice as well as dalvic twice!
Cheers!

I've just tried this twice but the problem still persists. Sure the screenshot issue is gone but the powering on and off the display is still intermittent.

I was having the same problem with the power button and was thinking it was hardware thanks for the heads up..
am I like the only one without this problem >.< lol. lucky me
I have this same problem too, I believe its connected to the screenshots but i don't know how to turn it off easily (how do I get into build prop?)
This is definitely after the update, I had absolutely no problems with the power button prior to the update.
I don't have any power button isues at all on my European Sensation (2.3.4 still S-On yet). Playing around it just for a week. But the Screenshot thing is a feature not a bug!
Just press <power button> + <Home> to take a screenshot. I like it.
I just starting having this issue yesterday too. Thought it was my power button getting stuck but good to see it's not a hardware problem and hopefully HTC fixes this.

I think you're right. As a test, I used AntTek App Manager to freeze "Scribble" which is also known as com.htc.mysketcher and I haven't had the issue yet. I believe this component is responsible for monitoring for the key combo for taking screenshots. Certainly, after freezing it, the Power+Home combo no longer works for taking screenshots.

I have just tried this but I still have the issue. Sometimes the power button won't wake up the screen and sometimes when I power off the screen it only stays off for a second and then lights up again.
I have this issue too, but I don't think it is software related problem.
It is, as the phone sometimes recognize a power button click as 2 clicks (screen goes off and on).
To see what I mean, go to Recovery and try to navigate through menus - when you're clicking power to enter any menu, sometimes you jump back, as if you were clicking "Go back"...
So, if the issue is even in Recovery mode, so it is not software related. I even restored my stock 2.3.3. soft and the issue is still there. I think it's a mechanical defect

The strange thing is, I even downgraded to 2.3.3 and I still have the problem. I have even flashed stock HBOOT and Recovery but the problem remains. I just don't understand it because it certainly wasn't happening before I upgraded.
Add one more person to the screenshot-club. Haven't had any other problems, but sometimes the phone just keeps taking screenshots when I'm pressing the home key. Extremely annoying, but luckily this is usually solved by tapping the power button. Ofc afterwards you have to clean your gallery of useless pictures... Argh!

[Q]Keys not working..help needed asap :(

Hello,I bought a HTC Desire S around 4 months ago.
From past 2 days i have lot of problems with it.
1.Home screen button not working
2.Q,A keys are not working while typing(they work when i rotate the screen)
3.Wen i rotate the screen and start typing the whole keys on the least bottom dont work.
4.Sometimes if i press back key it goes to selection option...sometimes whole phone hangs.
5.Im not able to download from market...after i click download it shows downlading icon but it never starts download.
I made factory reset for couple of times but no use.
Any one have some suggestions?
numbers 1 to 4 seem like some sort of problem with your touchscreen... Have you tried wiping it with some clean cloth after breathing on it? My back button has some issues registering touches once in a while, but wiping it helps always
Regarding 5, I don't know really, but have you tried using the webmarket?

ya i tried wiping it but not working
Does the area where your Q and A keys are when in portrait work when the keyboard is not on? Can you use it to click items, scroll webpages etc?
One other thing you could try is the calibrate option for the keyboard. (somewhere in settings-> languages I think, it's been a while since I ran an Sense ROM).
If both yield no result, it sounds like a hardware issue to me, and you might be best of to invoke your warranty.

Keep screen turned off

Hi
I have owned this phone for about 1 month now and haven't got round to testing all of its features yet. I recently tried the keep screen turned off setting but it doesn't seem to do anything. Perhaps it's broken or something. Proximity sensor seems okay and auto brightness works.
Any ideas?
Keep screen turned off is only to make sure that when your phone is in your pocket or bag and the home/lock button accidentally gets pressed the screen turns off straight away to conserve battery.
Sent from my SM-G930F using XDA Labs
Yes that's right. But when I activate this setting my screen will still turn on and stay on when in my pocket, bag, any other dark place.
Has anyone else got this problem. Is there anyway of fixing it. Btw I have tried factory reset twice to no avail
Thanks
I have same problem and my friend with s6 have same. Its all about android 7 on Samsung.

I have the exact same problem, here's my quote from another thread:
I have a similar problem. The proximity sensor itself works flawlessly during calls and in the test menu, but even though I have the "don't wake up in pocket" enabled in the screen settings, it always wakes and turns the screen on (and starts to make accidental clicks) when in pocket and the home button is accidentally pressed by my leg/pocket. I made a factory reset which didn't help. I don't use Package Disabler Pro, so that shouldn't cause the issue. Any help on this?
