Trying to unlock a Galaxy S3 - can someone help me out? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S3. I'd like to unlock it, but have been presented with a series of problems due to the phones age, due to the OS version.
The guide to unlock via the keypad and debug menu only works on 4.1 jelly bean or lower.
I'm on 4.3, and the lowest I seem to be able to downgrade to is 4.1.2, which is all both Sammobile and Samsung upgrades seems to have.
I can't find the appropriate firmware anywhere.
The plan was to use Odin to downgrade, unlock the phone and then upgrade back to 4.3.
After looking for hours I'm pretty sure there's no way to get the firmware I'm after, so I'm looking for another method.
Any guidance? Cheers

Hi,
I've had a read through the thread you sent me and done some digging on the S3 specific sub-forum you recommended.
I couldn't find any information in the link regarding rooting to my speicific problem (unlocking the GT-i9300 on 4.3 Jelly Bean) - is the relevance of the thread that my phone needs root access to unlock on this OS?
I did a search on the sub-forum and the closest I came to a solution was this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...work-unlock-firmware-version-4-t2612736/page5
However, I'm still quite confused as to whether people have actually managed to unlock the phone or not. Some say it is impossible, but then others provide evidence of doing so via methods I'm not entirely farmilar with.
There is talk of flashing an old 4.1 rom to the device for unlocking, but I'm not sure (looks like others in the thread have had trouble understanding it too).
Would you be able to glance over the thread for me and summarise what they're talking about? I have some experience but am by no means an expert.
From what I can tell the issue lies with the 4.3 uprgrade upgrading the EFS partition from EFS1 to EFS2.
Thanks a lot.
EDIT: Just realised I didn't specify my needs are a NETWORK unlock, my apologies.

I should have elaborated a bit more.
This is regarding all GS3 devices...
The only ones that have unlockable bootloaders are the ones up to Android 4.1.2.
When you had stated that you were able to downgrade to 4.1.2, i assumed that you were able to do so after downgrading to that version.
Android versions past that version can only be Rooted.
With that stated, if you have a GS3 with 4.1.2 then it should be as simple as the following:
1) Fully Charged Battery (always recommended).
2) Download and install the Samsung USB Drivers.
3) Download Odin.
4) Download the appropriate official {img.tar} TWRP from here:
Official TWRP for Samsung Galaxy S3 International Exynos (i9300) - Odin Flashable Image {img.tar}
5) Place the device into download mode by holding the Volume Down & Power button combo till the "are you sure" screen pops up. Then just press the Volume Up button once. If you see the Android guy in the center with tiny text at the top, then your in download mode.
6) Plug-in the USB cable to the device from the PC USB. Wait about 2-5 minutes for everything to be detected and installed on the PC for the device.
7) Open Odin and use the PDA button to browse to and select the TWRP img.tar file that you had just downloaded.
8) Now press Start and let Odin do its thing until the device restarts and Odin should have a big green PASS in it.
Once TWRP is installed, then you can disconnect the device from the computer and you should be able to install the custom ROM (that can only be done within TWRP).
This is just a quick outline and i hope I explained it okay via text.
I wish you the best of luck!

i just got this phone and it is awesome except when the prior owner updated the firmware it no longer is rooted. there is a built in app called super su but it is missing a binary file it says needs to be installed to root the phone? also as a backup i am trying to find a mirrored link or a working link for the most current android firmware for my model. can anyone please help me by providing simple, basic easy to understand way how to root my phone, what free app will be needed to root it and last a link for the firmware. it just says on the container the phone was in blu studio 5.0 c there is no hd written next to the model description. thank you for taking time to read this.
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. A quick search uncovered a great thread detailing how to root this phone:
[How-To] BLU Studio 5.0 C (D536U) – Rooting, Recovery Install, Flash Latest Stock Rom
That thread also contains a link to the latest stock firmware for your device. For future reference you can find the specific device forum for this phone here:

Good luck!

i tried the link for the factory rom and it was a dead link said file was no longer there for download. to be honest since there is alot involved in flashing the phone with the most current firmware available i am going to just pass and just keep what the phone currently has firmware wise. i do not want to by mistake brick the phone. all i really want to do is have on hand a copy of the most current firmware for my phone so in the event i need to re-flash it i can. i have tried seeking the firmware file for the phone but keep hitting dead links. thank you for your time. if u do have a live link so i can download a up to date firmware for the phone i could use that. thank you

Flashing any one of these will restore your device to its default state, to include locking up your bootloader.
It's extremely rare for a device, with an unlocked bootloader, to require or benefit from updating the bootloader itself unless it was to repair something like
Unbricking it.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello! I am currently running a PHX ROM - Stock MM - baseband version QA1, build number MMB29M.G900FXXS1CPK1, it is a port from the S7. I have a locked boot loader - CD11 chip.
Is it possible to flash the QL1 update to this phone on this ROM, or do I need to go all the way back to stock? (hope not....)
Thanks!

This looks like a 2 part type of question but, I believe that it can be answered with 1 part of it since I believe that you may be looking for something else and got a bit confused regarding this specific thread.
Are you actually looking for the Baseband Modem Update for your G900F device?

Hello!
I am looking to update to QL1 from QA1, but I am using a ported stock based ROM. I am unsure if using the files here will allow the phone to work. The phone is really a G900V (VZW) but registers as a 900F as it's a ported ROM

My main reason for trying this is to get my security updates from Nov 2016 security updates to a much better patch.

Okay, we're getting somewhere here.
Your question is, in fact, a 2 part question...
1) Your Baseband is out of date:
Your Baseband is kind of a set of drivers that controls a few things that's tied to your Modem that controls Mobile Data, LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth etc...
Yours reflects the "QA1" and there's been 7 updates to it since that was released.
Go to the following thread and use Odin to flash the "QL1" Update.
[BASEBAND-FIRMWARE-MODEMS]Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 {SM-G900V/KLTEVZW}[ODIN] by Ibuprophen
Please remember that the above Modem update will not affect your firmware that's installed. It only updates your Baseband Modem. When it finishes flashing, you can go to the About area and see the update there.
2) Specifically regarding the Security Patches:
This is Firmware ROM specific...
If you flash the latest Stock Firmware to your device, indeed the Security Patches will be installed but, if you port that Custom Firmware back to your device, you'll loose those security patches from the Stock Firmware.
The Developer of the Firmware that's installed on your device will have to implement and update the Custom Firmware specifically for Security Patches.
Basically, if you have an outdated Custom Firmware for your device, and want to keep a Custom Firmware installed, then your best bet is to use another Custom Firmware that's more up to date.
I hope that I had explained this okay via text...

This help very much!
So updating to QL1 using that thread will update my modem.
If I want the latest security patch I need to do one of two things:
1. Hope JKruse updates the ROM
2. Go back to stock and update normally.
Thank you!!!

The provided Stock Firmware and Pit on this thread is for ALL Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 devices (kltevzw / SM-G900V).
Just don't confuse this with the separate Firmware Modem files. This is the Stock Firmware for restoring the device back to factory stock.
The thread with the Modem files are only for Updating the Firmwares Modem only. The Modem Files are pulled from the stock Firmware.

This looks like your device isn't a G900V...
It looks like more like another Galaxy S5 variant like a G900F.
This will only work on G900V devices. It doesn't make a device a G900V.
EDIT: I just wanted to further clarify this point @xddd00... The "CSC" is the "Country Specific Code". If you look at the following link, you'll see that the SM-G900V has the "USA (Verizon)" specified and there's NO other "Stock" Firmware options available for this specific device for other Countries.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900V/
This specific device WILL NOT allow for other "Stock Firmware" to be installed BUT, if this devices Bootloader was Unlocked, then the option to install a "Custom Firmware" opens up.
I hope that I had clarified this better via text...

I've seen this before...
There's been members who had a device that pointed to one variant but, was actually another variant.
I'll have to admit that I'm not completely sure about how it was done but, you should be able to obtain some member guidance within the following Q&A thread that's specific to the Galaxy S5 and Variants.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2700073
Let them know that everything looks like a SM-G900V with CID11 but, after attempting to flash the Official SM-G900V Stock Firmware, you are having issues with the CSC being incorrect.
Something similar to the above but, it does get to the bottom line for your question.
I may chime in, if needed, to help clarify what I know about it.
Good Luck!

I've got my bootloader unlocked and am on a version of Oreo but Google Play Services isn't working....I'd like to get it working or install a ROM with no bloat and gPay working....I'm running the latest TWRP 3.2.1-0
I'd like to hear some good recommendations as this device is so awesome and is still very usable to this day and there are just so many roms and I can't figure out which ones work with my model (16GB) because there are so many threads in this sub forum, post links as they are super appreciated.

Have you tried to manually update the Play Services?
The following link is to the latest version related (apparently one was released today).

Good Luck!

The following is what's installed on my G900V device (as of the last recent update).
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/googl...2-8-74-000308-204998136-android-apk-download/
Keep in mind that this device uses the "arm-v7a" and the default DPI is the "480dpi".
You should be all set...

Amazon Music deny rooted devices now [Android (Cyanogenmod 11) ]

I have an old Smartphone : Samsung Galaxy S I9003.
I only use it to listen to Amazon Music.
On the device Cyanogenmod 11 is instatlled.
Since some Days, I got an message from Amazon-Music (inside of the app), that the Song could not be played, because the device is rooted.
Before some weeks there where no Problem with the same device, so it seems amazon has added this "feature" to his App now.
I've tried to install an older Version of Amazon-Music-App (7.9.2), but the same Message appears.
Question: Is there a way to downgrade the Amazon-Music-App, to make it work with the device again, or may they use Codepush, or some Kind of Server-Checking technology to figure out if my device is rooted.
If Downgrade is possible, since which version was the "root-checker" implemented in amazon-music-app?

I don't have this device (Samsung Galaxy SL I9003) and there's nothing I can see on the forum regarding your issue but, you do have a choice to obtain some member guidance within the following Q&A thread that's specific to your device...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867905
... or you can always try to update your Custom Firmware to the following Unofficial LineageOS 14.1 that's specific to your device as well.

Good Luck!
