Hello everyone.
I was checking out this Linux distro. I had the curious thought of - "what would it be like running a touch optimized Linux distro on our phone?"
Although the project is underway, it's far from actually being complete. There's always the possibility of preforming a brick when installing but as the project unfolds, maybe, potentially, we as a community can bring it this way?
Anyone got thoughts on this?
You can follow their project here at these links.
https://postmarketos.org
https://www.reddit.com/r/postmarketOS/
https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Main_Page
This was featured on the front page of XDA's news feed.
Again, what are everyone's thoughts?
Very very interesting! Thanks for the links.

You are welcome. If the project takes off, I'd be willing to attempt it at some point. We shall see how things go. I'm really interested in seeing how this project unfolds.

Awesome. Added to wiki in my sig.
Awesome! Thanks for the info. I'll start reading tonight after my kid goes to bed. I'm stoked to learn about cooking my ROM.
Bookmarked.
One day I'll find the time to learn all of this. I have a basic understanding of Java, and it seems the majority of Android is Java-based, so I just have to dive in and learn this. I'm excited

I've already started some of this on my own, but to have the sources all in one place is great. Thanks!

Extensively updated.
Thank you for gathering this. Hopefully, a few of us will step up and start developing. This forum has literally changed my life. I am going back to college to program because of XDA and Android. Two degrees will be awesome. LOL. An art degree just don't get me enough money. ;P

Ha, I know how you feel. This is one of the main reasons I jumped back into Computer Engineering(working towards my bachelors).
It's hard, but this place makes me realize that nothing is impossible.

This should be stickied.

FYI - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508265 - someone already asked.
Here is the activity on his github: https://github.com/timduru?tab=activity
Looks like he has not touched it in a few days, but remember he has a life outside of being a developer and that takes priority. He does it because he wants to. I guarantee the donations he makes are not enough to justify his time. I have made a few donations to him over the past year to help keep him motivated.
In the mean time, 4.3.1 with multi-window is good enough for me even if that is where he decides to stop.

So I am making a rom. It's written in C++, CSS, and HTML. I need a bit of help, my CSS is rusty so if there's any experts out there I welcome your help. If there's any designers out there well versed in C++ you are more than welcome to join on up. I hope to have a working prototype in the next few days, let's make this the best rom for the OnePlus One there is!
have you tried turning it off and on again?
I am confused. What am I turning off and on again? I just want to make a good rom for this community. I am just asking for help. Please, no jokes. Serious replies only.
I think that there already enough roms from experienced devs... You want to make a rom but don't have the knowledge.

Why discourage someone like that? You don't know him or what he's capable of. What if someone had said that to the developer of your favourite ROM when he was starting out and he listened? XDA is a place to encourage development, and a place to encourage people who want to learn how to build ROMs. There can never be too many ROMs available, and there can never be too many people/devs working on them. This guy could be the next big thing in the ROM community and all you want to do is shut him down. Unless you're going to contribute in a positive way, maybe don't post.

A lot of Google and this http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Development
All the best.

Maybe my words sound to hard on a screen but I don't want to discourage him ?
I'm just thinking that he is underestimating the job... He has 3 posts, needs people to do the majority of the job. Just my 2 cents.
But from now on only positive words, apparently negative is not allowed. Good to know...

Umm... Building a ROM is kinda different. You don't exactly have to write all the code yourself (that would take a few lifetimes ). You have to use existing stuff, and patch it together the way you like. You can change the coding style and stuff to the way you want. The CM development page would be a great idea to start with getting familiar with all the stuff.
Xavierdarkness, your enthusiasm is awesome. I'm pretty sure your rusty CSS skills are okay though, but you should really pick up some ActionScript if you intend on making the best ROM.
Dude, write it in machine language....that would be the tits
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. It means a lot. I hope to draw on my existing knowledge of QBASIC, VB 6, and HTML to help me on this journey. I'll likely have something up in the next few days if anyone would like to check over my QBASIC to make sure I am getting the API right with android. Thanks again, I'll read all the links you guys have provided and will update this periodically.

there ya go, way to show some support. never enough roms, but always to many self important people
A new team inside XDA of developers will be a good news.
Perhaps learn must be encouraged and I hate people say that there are too many roms... This is not a marketplace but a place for developers.

Guys on here who work for or run their own ROM teams, why not invite Xavierdarkness to your team and show him the ropes? Looks like his knowledge is there, just needs some nudging...
I'm curious how one would build a ROM from nothing more than C++, CSS, and HTML....if you don't have the Java how will it run android apps?

there are too many inefficient android apps. I think stopping the apps from running is a good thing. more speed! more battery!

You do realise that your settings menu is an app, your dialer is an app, basically, almost every functionality of your phone is through an app :/

of course I know this.
do you realise a dialer, or settings, or anything functional on a device doesn't have to be written in java? *points at TWRP* at the rate they are going, we'll have recoveries that can send/receive texts, and make calls

I know this thread is one massive troll though.... It'd be awesome to actually not use java for Android, at least on the core parts. Oh look, GoLang
Things have been interesting for Cyanogen at best lately, but it things maybe get even more interesting for Cyanogenmod soon:
[Updated] Steve Kondik blames Kirt McMaster for Cyanogen Inc's failure, CyanogenMod to reorganize and regroup (Android Police Link)
Some of the article above, I'm sure is Steve, venting, but below is a quote from the article above:
A big part of "next" is CM. It costs a lot of money to keep the servers running at this scale, and I figure we have about two months to GTFO. There are also IP issues. And the haters are getting to be too much to handle. On the other hand, it's been a huge part of my life for 8 years now and I don't want to let go of it.
A few questions for the community first..
1. Should we keep going? Is it worth it? I'm sure I can crowdfund the project, especially if we did something like "Darkside" and really revitalized it. I'm not sure of the endgame yet, though.
2. The main IP is the brand and trademarks. I don't know if I can get it back without a fight, and I'm tired of fighting. We will likely need to fork and rebrand, which might not be a bad thing. Would you support it?
3. If we reboot, what should we do differently?
4. The rest of the ROM community seems to be highly dependent on us, but simultaneously wants us dead. How on earth do you fix this?
5. WWJBQD?

Is it me or am I the only one that is surprised by the fact that this is not front-paged on this site?
For most custom ROM "normies" who don't use anything other than Cyanogen(Mod), this is pretty major news.

Before I posted this I looked all over for some sort of coverage on this, as I figured there would be something. I can't believe there is still nothing. I realize there has always been drama at Cyanogen, but this is starting to look like it might actually affect Cyanogenmod.

I'm actually thinking the same thing, now that Steve Kondik has left the sinking ship.
People can say what they want about Cyanogen(Mod) all they want, and all the bad things said about them would be accurate, but sadly, this might be a major, perhaps negative, change for the Android enthusiast/hobbyist scene.
And on Slashdot today....:
All Cyanogen Services Are Shutting Down
From that link:
A very brief post on Cyanogen's blog says it all really: "As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

STATUS: I'll be honest, I give up. Mods if you see this, remove the thread. This is hard guys. It has been hard. I have been pulling a lot of late nights, I have switched bases and tried so many fixes and Sailfish OS 2.1 on grouper just refuses to boot. We still have 1.0 and I know that it sucks on tablets but honestly, sailfish OS porters deserve so much more respect. This is hard. Building android honey comb or oreo would have been easier than this. For anyone who wants to give it a shot I won't even post sources, I never really had to change them in a way that made any progress. Not to mention the default fixup-mountpoints match the device's perfectly fine and modifying them did nothing.
I sincerely wish whoever takes this project up a good luck, and for everyone else, I recommend selling your tablet and either saving up for/buying a 2013 Nexus 7 or better yet, a Youyota tablet like me. I'm really sorry for just giving up like this and I feel just as bad as you, but I can't make this clear enough, this **** is hard.
