Should I unlock my Z5? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I want to install the camera of xz premium on my Z5 to get the manual functions but requier the root permission. I can't find anything better for the Z5, Open Camera not has the ISO and shutter speed, "Manual camera" will gone crazy(blurred)when the phone is held in hand and suffers shaking or vibration.. The FV-5 also, but, I had a Lumia 1520 and not affect to it at all. so I think the official SONY app will be better .. since the xz premiun still cost a lot and with the Z5 can still be very good..
Can I root my phone without the unlock of bootloader? Will lose the drm key if I unlock it but I can't backup it without root? Can I flash a patch of DRM when my phone is unlocked? Any kernel make the phone no heat?

Xperia M2 (Any Model) Is it Safe to Flash Alternative Firmware?

So say you have D2306 model and you flash D2303 or D2305 etc. These are the different regions. Are there files that matter? Can you just pick and choose or is it just customization?
I couldn't find this Q here or via internet searching. (there are probably 50 ways of phrasing it).
I'm not marking this just as a question, I'd prefer discussion. It may not be cut and clean so discussion is better.
This post gives some detail, it looks like cross-flashing like that is a bad idea:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54431237&postcount=2
?? D2306, D2303 and so on are different phones with different HW. You do NOT want to install their ROM.
Unless I've gotten the models wrong, they are the exact same phone, but with different firmware belonging to their respective regions. I have the D2306.

I had to check what's the D2306. I think it is like a D2303 using different band frequencies:
http://dl-developer.sonymobile.com/documentation/whitepapers/Xperia_M2_D2303_D2305_D2306_WP_14.pdf
Which means the difference should go down straight to the kernel. Then there are the dual SIM model and the no LTE one. You sure don't want to install their ROM. In all cases you may end up not being able to connect the the phone network.
What you may install are the ROM for your D2306 from other countries/providers (this in case you want the latest update). Although personally I wouldn't bother. It may mess up with future updates (if any). Although, yeah, you can always update the phone again manually. Still I'd rather wait few days and the update should arrive.
I think the only possible capable flashes are flashing D2303 on D2403 and D2306 on D2406, as (IMO) they are quite similar, only the screen was the biggest change I think. (Well, at least Stock M2 Rom worked fine on my M2 Aqua.)

As far as I know they have a different frontal camera. With the Aqua models having more many more pixels. Did you check if it worked?
I actually haven't tested it, I flashed it only for root purposes (following the root with TA backup guide). I only know Aqua has a VGA frontal camera. (It actually is the same, as I check it in Sony website.)

Yeah that confused me too, I've seen Aqua has both VGA and 1 or 2 MP front camera. It's confusing.
So you flashed normal M2 ROM on Aqua? No problems so far? If the front camera works fine...I may try it.
Well, I'm already back to stock M2 Aqua ROM, but 4.3 ROM of M2 seemed to work quite well on M2 Aqua.
Aqua new update on single sim M2 seems to be working fine. I haven't noticed any problems - including the cameras.
You get a message saying don't forget to close the flaps for waterproofing, and your computer says it's Aqua...otherwise all OK so far.

So it's even backwards compatible? Nice! I thought only M2 ROM on M2 Aqua was possible, not M2 Aqua ROM on M2.
The message can be disabled easily, and about PC and Aqua... Well, it's Aqua ROM, isn't it?
Good share anyway!

Is the resolution of the frontal camera the same? Or it raised to the one of the M2 Aqua?

I can't see a difference. I don't think software can do that anyway, it has to be upgraded hardware!
I also seen lots of adverts saying the Aqua has an upgraded front camera. But the official Sony page currently says VGA (or similar). Meh.

Well, I asked because on my previous junky Samsung phone we could raise the resolution of the camera while taking video using the LG camera app.
Still this is confusing. Some sites report that the frontal camera of the M2 Aqua is 1.2 MP:
http://www.cnet.com/news/to-tip-or-not-to-tip-drivers-that-is-ubers-question/
But Sony talks about VGA indeed. Although I am not sure what VGA means anymore. It started with 1024*768 I think.

Buying Z5 - Bootloader Concerns

Hi everyone. I finally decided to buy a new phone after ages (I have Xperia V )
My definite choice was Nexus 6P, but now I'm also looking into Z5.
I don't care about price.
My only question is Does unlocking bootloader on Z5 affect camera quality?
According to Sony's Official Bootloader Unlock Website :
for instance Xperia Z3, the removal of DRM security keys may affect advanced camera functionality. For example, noise reduction algorithms might be removed, and performance when taking photos in low-light conditions might be affected. The secure user data partition may also become inaccessible

If yes, I'll stick with 6P
Yes. Stick with the nexus if you want custom rom and lots of development

Damn Sony!
I can live my life with stock roms, but not without unlocked bootloader and root
To be fair, coming from a Nexus 5, it's not actually bothered me not having root

what I miss if unlocked the bootloader? drm keys

hi to all
I need to know what software is lost or bad function if i unlock the bootloader and lost drm keys

sorry for my bad english
X-Reality color mangement, BIONZ image processor and the active noise cancelling techniques
See this post
you can use this to re-enable some drm features
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/root-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605
you do need to do a TA backup beforehand which requries you to get a tool called ivoryroot and also requres a very old firmware

Yeah. http://www.xda-developers.com/restore-lost-functionality-on-your-unlocked-xperia-device-part-two/
According to this web page, the difference is quite significant.

no longer a m2 user/owner

Well that time has come to move forward and I've upgraded to a new Xperia xa I was gonna keep the m2 but the xa is that good I don't see the need so it's gone. Had the xa since last week and you certainly shouldn't believe everything bad you read about these devices, the xa makes the m2 look like a Xperia E1 I I'll be around in the xa+Sony cross device forums and on g+ thanks for all the help+work with the m2 guys and maybe I'll see you in the xa group.

How is it? The XA I mean. I see in some videos the navigation bar buttons don't seem to change applying some themes. As it happened in the previous Xperia with Mediatek SoC (M5/C4/C5). I ask because I wanted to get one myself, the price seems just right, and I really don't care if it looks like plastic as they say, we all put covers anyway.. But if it has issues with the themes I must pass.
Regarding the difference in performances.. Sure! You're comparing a 2014 phone with a 2016 one. Twice the cores, twice the CPU bits and, most important, twice the RAM.

I have no regrets at all, currently still stock with only aggressive doze and doze on the go via adb with greenify I've done(yes it'll work without root) haven't used stamina mode once since getting it either(it's stamina mode in name only now anyway just Android battery saver renamed). Currently only way to get root on mm though is to unlock the Bootloader(so don't buy a carrier locked one) and there's currently no way to back up ta keys until someone finds a way to back them up which is why I'm reluctant to rush to unlock it . Root is available if you ain't bothered about not backing up ta it does effect the camera on the xa and be2 and sv drm fix is confirmed working. Themes it seems to depend some change the nav bar buttons some don't. It's no more plasticy than the m2 though the back is a matt finish rather than shiny plastic. You certainly shouldn't believe everything bad you read about them. Volume is well loud compared to the m2 too Getting around 4-5hrs screen time depending on what I'm doing and mm is silky smooth with no lag at all. I'm not really a gamer on phones but been assured it'll run most games with ease It's also by far the better looking of the x range. Oh and did I mention the stunning edge to edge display.
I have only one minor gripe and that's that facebook is a bloody system app. Below is a couple of camera shots superior auto mode 9mp 16.9

@aidy.lucas Well, impressive pictures indeed! Did you use the flash for the head? Too bad about root. I need that to remove that ads spamfest. And the backup as well. Obviously you can't backup the TA without root, it shouls be readable by root only,. It's a loophole.
About the navigation bar icons.. When they don't change it's because the themes simply do not modify them or it's a bug? I mean, does it ever happen that in the screenshots of the themes the navbar icons are different but then when you apply the themes you still get the stock icons? Otherwise, could you please do a quick test with this one (it's free)? The central button should be a circle. Thanks.

Nope doesn't change the nav bar buttons yet this one does http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...peria-stock-x7-stock-sony-style-t3434562/page no idea why
I was hoping that ivy root temp root would work so I could back up ta keys before unlocking like the z5 range. But no it requires a LP kernel before dec15 so won't work as x range doesn't have LP, we need a new exploit if there even is one, kingroot doesn't work either not that I'd use it if it did I don't think. The other back up ta keys programme you mentioned needs full root access to back them up not possible on the x range on mm without unlocking and wiping the keys. Yes there's a drm workaround confirmed working but it's no good if I need my warranty suddenly or want to go back to stock.

This is ridiculous. That theme is developed with Theme Creator, what the heck is Sony doing, they don't even test their own SW in their phones. I'll see if I manage to decompile the theme you posted and see what's different, thanks.

Disadvantages of unlocking bootloader?

i really want to root my phone, but i saw some cases where the camera stopped working etc. and ofcourse the (permanent?) removal of the waranty.
You lose the DRM keys and since there's no Marshmallow fw for this phone since it came with Nougat you can't downgrade to save them but unless you plan on going root-less this won't be that big of a deal.
So if you plan on having root forever no worries.
When you lose the DRM keys you lose some quality in the camera in low-light conditions.
For me root heavily outweighs the camera. I don't buy Sony phones for the camera, as long as they are working I'm fine with losing low-light quality to get root.
The camera issue got fixed so don't worry about that.

No it will bootloop. I would just flash .235 anyway. Thats what I did. It doesn't matter it's another region.
