Today while I was checking Facebook, my G Flex suddenly went off. Don't worry because that happened to me about 4 times a week. But this time, it was different, the phone didn't turn on again, not even connecting it to the power outlet. Apart from that, it was on its third battery purchased, as many will know, it always failed.
Now I kept thinking about the beautiful and horrible moments that this phone brought me. So many headaches from the stagnant LG system in Lollipop and with that disgusting layer of customization, added to the impossibility of unlocking the bootloader and the problem of super overheating of the Snapdragon 810 that even with retouched interactive governors could avoid it.
But at the same time great things like 24-bit audio support (It was wonderful to hear music on it.), a good rear camera with optical stabilization, the fact that this phone could be said to be "competitive" in terms of power today (obviously not taking into account overheating) and, most importantly, the CURVE SCREEN.
I'll miss this phone, probably buy a Galaxy S8, or a Moto Z2 Force, but something is sure.
I WILL NEVER BUY AGAIN AN LG IN MY LIFE.
My phone died too. It has the same symptoms. What I would like to buy is either OnePlus 5 or LG G6, but more towards the 1+.

I may be in the majority when I say this, but I miss the old designs of phones. The plastic design of the LG Flex 2 and LG G4 was perfectly fine by me. Now they make the phones out of delicate aluminum that is so slippery. The plastic phones can take more drops and hit than the aluminum ones can today.
I have mine rooted on the most recent image. How did you manage the overheating issue ? I'll admit the thing still has sentimental value to me lol.
My Flex2 died too. It was pretty good phone but what mostly I liked about it was, of course, the curve! That was so ergonomic, very comfortable to use and also to have in your pocket. That enabled 5.5" screen to manage with no hassle.
On the other hand the screen was pixelated (especially on low brightness), camera had no manual settings (except like on/off for HDR or flash, lol). SOT was barely acceptable, sometimes not even 4 ours. 2/16 GB were also very very limiting, not enough internal memory for apps, always forcing you to chose them carefully. Oh, I almost forgot - "self healing" battery cover. All it did for me was collected micro scratches from nowhere. Very unpleasant view to the careful phone owner.
What's next? Maybe G6, who knows.
For me LG share the blame with Qualcomm for this phone. The first version of the SD810 always overheated and was probably at fault for many of the hardware issues that users have suffered over the years. LG should have provided 3GB RAM on all versions to fully exploit the high end SoC. LG's software support for a flagship was also poor.
On the other hand, it was a beautiful piece of hardware. I really liked the screen and the curve felt excellent in the hand. The red back on some versions was much nicer than the grey of the H950.
So like others, I'm torn.
Second time this same problem happened to me also . I thought it was a rare occurrence; but today, my 2nd G Flex 2 died, just 5 months after my other one. Symptoms are the same as yours. Heat gunning the chips under the shields on the motherboard did nothing. Not sure if to get an LG phone next anymore...
My G Flex 2 also died and LG Support says they dont have the needed replacement parts and instead offered me to get an LG Q6 as replacement which feels like being ripped off.
Disassemble the phone and place the motherboard onto a piece of aluminum foil and bake it at 300°f for 8 minutes. Then letting it stand in the oven with the door open for a half hour. This generation of LG phones used bad solder compounds. Remelting them fixes them back to working order. Reassemble and enjoy.

I'd rather the phone stayed in my smartphone cemetery. The S8 is already part of my life.

What's the worst that could happen with this method? I'm nearly convinced to try this, although I still want to get the data off the EMMC chip.
My Flex 2 is still alive and well, about a year after I bought it. It heats up, slows down, is laggy, too bright in the dark and dim outside. Battery, seems to have improved over time, however, occasionally something will drain it in no time. Can't quite figure out what it is. Sometimes I get random restarts and weird behavior, but not on a daily basis. Perhaps once every week or two. Because it's too bright in the dark I use a dimming app, when dimmed you can noticably see that large areas of the screen (roughly half) have a sort of dark stain. This has been there since day 1. On MM stock.

Worst thing is that you bump it while it's still hot and ruin the board. Don't try and rush things. I'll fix it for you if you don't want to do it. I'm in the metro Detroit area though.

This will not fix software problems, only hardware. Just so you are aware.

I'm on lollipop, and I notice the same lag as you. I think it has to do with how the Kernal and driver's use the available cores. This might have 8 of them, but they are vastly different. Some are fast, some, not so much. There are init d scripts that can help. I'm on the 3gb variant, and that helps as well. Hopefully we can find a bootloader bypass or an unlock, it would make this phone so much better. It's almost a mid ranged current phone. It's aged well. Let's hope something soon happens.

LG told me it was a hardware issue..I haven't tried...been at work lately..I will try and report my findings
I just got a V20 used, and I miss my Flex2 already. The curve was brilliant, and I feel like I'm carrying a brick around with a straight phone
LG, will you PLEASE setup a bootloader unlock for this? I don't see why they don't, considering there's no official support for this phone, and even the carries don't care at this point.

After having mine now for an hour and using it....the fingerprint scanner doesn't work as good as I would like it. My thumb is at an angle when holding the phone. I added it in using that angle, but it wants you to come straight down, which means I have to change the way i hold it to use it and have it register.

Seems they screwed up adding all the extra features that as mentioned here, a lot probably will not use. Finger print scanners are prone to screw up and the heart rate sensor seems frilly for most. The cost of this "customer will like it" fluff is a bigger device. The device IMO is now too big in relation to the display and awkward with one hand for most people. The S4 was near borderline already.
Samsung truly has a bloat and new feature fetish. They seem to think the combination appeals more to customers. For the majority it seems No, but the minority is perhaps Yes. Catch is everyone gets stuck with a bigger, bloat ridden device- like it or not if want the S5.
The funny thing is the S5 now has near the same overall size of my S4 with a bigger battery.
M8 is also too big IMO, so the S5 is not alone in this regard.
I actually found the chrome trim be terrible looking, and despite my plans not to use a case, had to get a thin black bumper to cover it. There is no doubt the M8 looks better, and is very comfortable to hold. I had to have the S5 because the screen just seemed much better, and part of it isn't wasted by the nav bar like on the M8.
I haven't had enough time to play with all of the features yet, however the screen has been nothing but impressive so far. I don't like the new settings so far, but that's probably because I'm just not used to it.

My biggest beef with the M8 was that the speakers make the phone so much bigger than it needs to be. If you hold the S5 and the M8 next to eachother there is about half an inch of wasted space, especially if you factor in the navbar. For people that use the speakers, it might be worth it, but I would not.

How is the screen in direct sunlight? I saw a review comparing it with others at max brightness which showed not much improvement. I think only Auto-Brightness will really max out the screen's brightness and I'm not sure if they manually maxed it out or it was it on auto.
And are you using it on the default mode or did you change it to cinematic?
i love the fingerprint scanner..works perfectly for my thumb for 1 handed use..
only thing i'm not liking right now is it seems to have that same body shift issue my white S3 had, that my S4 didn't..like as if the battery isn't big enough for the cavity, so it moves and makes the body feel like its twisting so it makes some lil snappy creak noises. kinda sucks, but oh well. maybe the battery just isn't big enough for the spot,w ho knows.

Granted I only spent about 5 minutes with it outside so far, but the difference was HUGE from my S3 (which I really struggled with in the sun). I did not mess with any display settings yet, so it was all default. I got it on lunch and I'm working, so I've only been able to play with it here and there.
The display continues to be impressive, which is the main reason I wanted it. I can't speak to the difference between the s4-5, but between the 3 and 5 its night and day.
I'm excited to get it home and drop in a sink of water.
I like the phone. Definitely has a lot of features that I won't use but that's a Galaxy device. If we're on XDA, we know what we're getting into. The bigger size to achieve the IP67 certification is somewhat annoying but again, nothing unexpected and a nice feature. One that I'm sure will save more than a few people. So, despite the usually Galaxy "extras", I'm enjoying it. I will have to get a replacement as there is a permanent " smudge " on the display. Almost as if there's a coating for the IP67 certification and that coating wasn't applied correctly. No biggie. As long as VZW cooperates lol.

full light shots outdoors in the sun, blacks were coming out smudgy and blotchy and not good at all..i'm going to be super pissed if this camera turns out to be worse than my G2..that's the whole damn reason why i got this phone.

Let's see these pics. No way worse than G2.
Not liking the recent apps button. Came from an s3 and I'm used to tapping for the menu to come up. Now it's needs a long press. If I could just swap the long and short press functions I would pretty happy. Only had it since 10am.
Screen is definitely better than the s3. Using it to navigate on the dash on a bright sunny made it very apparent. S3 looked dark and hard to see, the s5 looked way better and easy to see.
The chrome around this all black is not to my taste, but I'm hoping my new uag case will cover it.

I just dropped mine a sink full of water. Still kicking. I recorded the drop.
I just realized that the screen lights up every time I get a text. Stays on for a few secs, but I cannot change that.

I did the same thing, now my wife has OPO and I'm back to Nexus 5.
I'm rather picky about display, and OPO has this yellow gradient discoloration at the bottom of the display. That is caused by the hardware design, so it is mabe by manufacturer (JDI) intentionaly (forget about that it will go away after some time or that it is caused by the glue or that UV will make it disappear).
JDI display manufacturer made LCD backlight diffuser semi-opaque at thar area to minimise light leakage but side effect is that yellow diacoloration (piss effect).
It bothers me, but my wife cant even notice it, so if you don't mind this go for it.
And OPO camera has rather slow shutter speed (if you capture moving object you will have ghosting wich you can't avoid (never PERIOD))...
Take this in consideration and make the choice...

I've been playing around the service menu and tested the Pressure Sensor. In a solid waterproof phone, pressure should remain steady when acted upon by outside forces.
I simply tried to moderately blow some air into the USB port and there's a notable difference. Also removed the sim cap and sucked on the port. Air was clearly passing through.
I'm curious if it's just my phone with this issue in which case I'll replace it, or if it's a design fault, in which case you shouldn't submerge it.
In the screenshots you'll see the pressure difference. So please test this by accessing the service menu *#*#service#*#*, > tests > pressure sensor and simply blow some air into it.

In Xperia Z3 there was a hole in the lower-left corner that if not covered by hand also let the pressure to drop down.
I think that every phone has to have some kind of a "blow off valve" to prevent internal pressure from rising when the phone heats up to avoid damaging the seals around the screen and the back.
Note that when you cover the usb port pressure stays perfectly stable. The phone is still waterproof it just lets the internals "breathe"

It's far more than a simple valve. For example if you have water in the port and you blow some air to take it out, that water will actually go inside the phone. I'm asking because if ever submerged, water pressure will be far grater than my air blowing capabilities ))) so things can get messy pretty fast.
It's far too easy to change the pressure inside it, so all I need to know is if other XZp are behaving the same way or if it's just mine.

As I said Z3 behaved similarly and I have submerged this phone a couple of times and never had any problems with it. Note that air particles are much more able to squeeze through tight spaces than water.
Same principle aplies to waterproof jackets, they let the air pass through so that you wont get sweaty while at the same time the won't let water go through.

Yes man, I know what a valve is and how it operates in a phone. I've been having xperias for over 5 years. I'm not on Talk.sonymobile, I'm on xda. So if you can try the test whenever you can. All it takes is 1 minute.
I opened this thread because I need to see if mine has those rubber seals too loose or if it's a general and normal thing. I asked for xzp owners to try the test because on my phone air passes virtually unobstructed.

There is a pressure regulation in every phone. The reason is the battery, in case the battery is defective (see Shamesung Note ), it will produce gas. This gas can later inflame, hence it is important to get it out of the device.

I know, I just spent a lot of money on this thing and I'd rather avoid damaging it. In my opinion that valve is way too lose.
Check this video out, I do not agree with this idiotic test but in the end the phone got water damaged. Vibrator Motor is right next to the USB port which in this video it keeps on vibrating even after device is off.

I know, I'm sorry for jumping the gun. Didn't get a full night sleep.
I'm weary because I had Xperia XZ for a week, did the same test but the breathability on the usb port was minimum. Anyway, I'll be careful. My (very) old Xperia Z got water damaged in the pool due to a worn rubber band on the headphone jack. Damage was extensive.

Check this video out, I do not agree with this idiotic test but in the end the phone got water damaged. Vibrator Motor is right next to the USB port which in this video it keeps on vibrating even after device is off.

If damaged by submerging, I'd send it on for guarantee and request a new one. It states IP68 proof, that means 30 minutens fully submerged.
Oh and btw, the guy actually FROZE his phone for 12 hours .

I know.... It's an idiotic test. But leaving that aside, it is compared to another waterproof phone which worked as good as new afterwards. So it's safe too assume that the USB might be letting in a bit more than just data and power.
It's a bit of a letdown, I'll wait for the teardown videos to see if they finally coated the motherboard and other boards against water ingress. Just like you see in the iphone and samsung.

Well, I'm the kinda guy who tries out things if promised . What I can tell you, my phone spent a fair amount of time submerged already, I always wanted to try out underwater video recording. No real sense in it, but it's fun .
Still working and it's drying real quick.

I know it's fun, it's even more so when you wash it in the sink in front of people haha. Can you please do me a solid and test the pressure sensor while blowing air into the usb? like I tried - 2 cm away, full lung pressure on the usb, and tell me if that pressure rapidly moves up. It will help me sleep better at night after I wash the thing haha.

I'll do so in 13 minutes, im currently running a battery test. Just as side note, Amazon Underground seems to drain battery like hell on 7.1.

I have the same problem and my xzp had water damaged,they changed me a new one which still have this problem....I will not try twice.Maybe this is a manufacturing problem.

It's a design flaw then..... I'll buy the usb silicon caps just to be extra safe.... Shame they didn't manage to build this properly.....

Yes, that is the idea behind IP68 certification. I dumped my phone in the pool yesterday, just for fun. Just PLEASE make sure to dry the phone before charging it. I know that sounds stupid but there is some photos around of ppl claiming their devices just started burning. Due to the nature of energy transport in USB-C 3.1, that is almost impossible - unless you short-circuit it with water .
A while ago, i saw a post regarding the weight of the essential phone changed from the older devices. when i went to best buy to exchange it, it weighed noticeably heavier than the previous phone i had. also, the last phone had a slippery gloss and had problems. the new one i replaced hasnt given me a problem and im quite happy with it because some usual bugs others experienced.
i dont know what the weight of the last one is, but what i want to make a thread of is have your phone weighed, post the weight and reply with the list of issues and feel of the device. lets see if there theres any theory to this.
so my phone is:
.4lbs or 6.4 oz.
not that slippery compared to the last one
camera works pretty good
doesnt get hot easily, battery life lasts 5-6 hours on screen time
Interesting that phones would have different weights.
6.6 oz on a postal scale. Purchased yesterday, haven't started using it yet.

If I had a way to measure I would, I'm curious. Mine is a white sprint variant and the finish is glossy but I'm not sure what to compare it to, it's not slippery though.

I see that they have confirmed 100000 flips. 28 flips per day for 5 years. The problem is, I'm pretty sure that we're going to use more than 28 flips a day e.g. face unlock, manual flip control, Instagram stories, video calls, taking multiple front video clips (vloggers) etc. I'm a bit worried about it failing in 2 years. So would it be durable enough for the long run?
Only way to find out is waiting 2 years I guess, it's hard to judge. In case Asus messes things up and they start to break everywhere then that would not only hurt Asus's image but also overal all motor controlled camera's.
I personally think it would be fine, perhaps a iFixit rating would soften the blow if they would deem it easy to repair.
That would likely suggest it has ~10% chance of failure after 100,000 flips, and very, very few people would average more than 25 a day over 2 years.
The mech looks well designed, to me.
However if you drop your phone a lot, this probably isn't the device for you.
I'm really not worried at all.
I think the YouTuber JerryRigEverything is gonna do a test on the durability of the camera in the next few weeks, since he's already pre-ordered it.
That being said, it should last for 2-3 years when most users would be onto another phone, and it doesn't seem like it will break anytime soon.
I'm not actually worried, I'm just a bit concerned about longevity.
I already spotted a video on youtube of a guy having one where the camera would not return flat properly already, but it was in spanish so hard to understand.
I'm more worried about dust, lint, and other flotsam and jetsam getting behind, beneath, and alongside the mechanism thereby causing it to gunk up and either not open, or not close properly. I'll stick with my OnePlus 6 non-T version.

True, the OnePlus 7 pro has a rubber ring around the base of the pop up camera. The zenfone 6 doesnt have any kind of water protection. So that might be an issue.

Until we see a tear-down, I wouldn't be so sure that there isn't any protection. I've heard it's at least splash resistant which I think most models are these days. One thing is not having IP certification but you don't need that to make rudimentary rubber seals.
Of course it'll be difficult to do especially with how much of it is exposed. It's definitely easier for the 7 Pro because pretty much all of it is internal.

We all have to wait for a proper teardown of zenfone 6.
But I am sure the liquid cool metal stepper motors are quite durable.
Company claims 28 selfies everyday for 5 years.
We'll have to wait a little until we get to know how reliable is the flip camera. But it feels reliable and strong from what I've seen so far

my camera motor failed in 6 weeks. Sent it in for repair and looks like they are waiting on parts...
As far durability is there but problem is dust accumulation and hinge is getting loose (not getting fully retract).
I was skeptical about the durability but so far camera is sturdy.

After almost seven months of operation, I see absolutely no difference from how it worked the first day.
I got my phone on 5July 2019 and till date it's working flawlessly. Even it once fell into road side drain and was fully sunk in water for about 8-10sec but it runs buttery smooth and thus the camera.
IMO this phone is just superb and much more better than Chinese ****s like Vivo, OP, Oppo, Xiaomi etc
