Firmware update without losing root & settings - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys,
I have seen that there is a new firmware update for the S8 and I was wondering if I can do that with my rooted S8 and how.
Will I lose root? What do I have to attend to?

Depends which root (sorry bad pun) you go down tbf. If you are rooted and have custom recovery then you can flash one of the updated roms which has the updated firmware as its base.
The other way to update would be to use odin to flash the official firmware, with this method though you will lose root.

I have just rooted the original firmware which was on the phone. Will I lose any data if I flash the newer firmware with odin?

with flashfire you could update the firmware without losing the man's data and root, but does not seem to work properly.

question about rooting and ota updates

im on my stock rom and stock everything just rooted... i do have clockwork recovery though. question is does this prevent me from getting ota updates or not? i have read various things saying that if you have a custom recovery installed it will prevent the install of the ota update but you still get the file ota.... Also, if it does work to install an ota update will i lose root? thanks
Its always recommended not to flash an OTA over a rooted ROM as it can bugger things up
you are able to receive the OTA, but it is strongly recomended not to
thanks guys , anyone know when 2.3.4 will be released for US version???

I highly doubt anyone does. We don't even know the date of the maintenance updates yet.

Use one of the update files from this post, if you have changed any files since you rooted you will have to probably restore those files first, if you are completely stock then just flash through CWM. Cheers.

Yes, you can update with root as long as you have stock recovery- did you really need to start ANOTHER thread asking this question though? It has been answered by me at least ten times since the update hit my tab at 6 am (that's 5 hours ago).

[Q] Is there a way to manually flash Android Marshmallow?

Hey,
sick of waiting for the OTA update already.
Does anyone have the rom files to manually flash marshmallow?
I mean the OTA update must be out there for some, so someoune should be able to provide that? Or am I wrong?
I'm using the international variant G920F.

You have costom roms from beta MM...check android development section

rooting, will I lose OTA Updates?

Hi Guys, just a quick question... if I root my Stock Marshmallow rom, will I lose OTA updates from Samsung even though the rom is still Stock?
Thanks guys.
Yes, knox will be tripped and no more updates, you'll have to flash the newer firmware manually.

Keep in mind, that if you determine that rooting / installing custom roms is a good option for you many custom roms offer OTA abilities. It's not as straight forward as stock OTA's however if you've determined root / custom roms are for you, you probably have decided simplicity and comfort come after the beneifits of customization & modification.

Galaxy Note Edge G variant;Update to MM when rooted help.

Hey guys,
I have a rooted note edge on 5.1.1
I am currently downloading the lateset firmware for my device, MM, and was wondering if I could flash with odin and keep my root and custom recovery.
If not, could you please lay out the plans to properly update to MM while getting a custom rom and root.
Thanks in advance guys!
No problem rooting with supersu or using twrp on 915g MM. Use the latest versions of both as usual after updating to MM

So my root would be void and null after the MM firmware update and I'll have to root again is what your saying?
Thanks for your help brother! Much appreciated!
Basically I am on 5.1.1. It's rooted and am pretty sure I also had to change the kernel during that root. Now I have massive performance issues, and would like to flash the latest firmware, and want to know the best way to go about doing it.
Do I have to revert back to stock and or remove current root and custom kernel before I flash MM firmware?
And should i flash thru odin?
Thanks for your help again!
Is there a way to root the 915T already updated to 6.0.1 dpj2 (October update)?
Just flash the stock firmware through Odin and you are back to stock everything (except Knox warranty bit which doesn't matter anyway).
Phone will no longer be rooted.
Just root again as usual.
