This is for all those who are facing screen burn in in lg v20 display.( This tutorial has also worked for many other devices so if you're facing the same issue just give it a try to see whether it works for you or not)
This tutorial will also increase the color vibrance of display.
The only things You gonna need are
1 a custom kernel supporting Kcal
2 kernal auditor app or Simply Color control apk
3 apply these values and use your phone for around 10 to 20 mins and screen burn in Gone (in sha Allah)
Red 240
Green 240
Blue 240
Minimum 35
Saturation 50-65(depending upon your choice of color viberancy)
Value 130
Contrast 130
Hue 1520
*For more warmer and Super amoled like color, also Go to settings>Display> comfort view and set it to low* and you're good to go ?

Thanks for that fix. I had read another fix had to do with physically replacing the thermal past inside the screen. This was much easier, but I am curious as to why this works. And will there be any consequence? Will it use more power or anything like that? The only value that was far from default was Hue.

I actually looked into this and did it myself. Was quite easy as long as you're comfortable with tiny screws and parts. As far as phones go, there certainly isn't and probably never will be an easier phone to repair...
Took mine apart, saw a Reddit post about the thermal paste issue. It doesn't surprise me, these big companies always cheep out on thermal compound *cough Intel*. It's 21 screws, pop a few connectors, then the board comes out. Clean the old pink goo off, replace with good stuff (I use Arctic MX-4). So far seems ok, still noticed the retention but I'm hoping it will disappear.
Sounds like LCD displays are prone to getting hot which contributes to the image retention. I'm not an expert though, just what I read.

Yes definitely Root is required and also a custom kernal supporting KCAL
Because stock kernal doesn't support the Kcal

I did. So far nothing changed. I used MX-4 thermal paste which has never disappointed. I will give it a few days, see what happens.

May be Your paste has made this method useless for your phone because for most of the people it worked

Do you have a tutorial or couple of photos showing where exactly the CPU is? I see some silver plates on the circuit board but not sure if I need to remove any of those to reveal the chip undercover. I applied a similar fix to a V10 but this one looks different inside. I'd love to spare some of the heat too.
I did the settings suggested by OP and looks fine so far, so shokran ya habbibi!

I didn't take any pictures. What I found was on Reddit in the LGV20 subReddit and there was a good video showing disassembly. If I find it ill link it here.
It was really easy to get to and find. 21 screws to come out then gently take out a few components. It was pretty obvious when I found the copper heatsink. Clean, reapply, reassembly.
I did actually leave my phone off one night and checked it in the morning. I didnt have any image retention at that time. After some use it came back though.

Just a thought. See how thin of a foam sheet you can find and try to fit it between the screen and board. :\ Im having the same issue but, it start after staying on an image for a second. I literally test how long it takes. So I wonder really how big of a role heat plays in it .

Did you try the settings suggested above(if you're rooted)?
The settings @maxi65 posted defiantly work. I can say with confidence, the changing of the thermal paste didn't help me. There could be other cases where it does improve things, but mine didn't change.
My v20 was pretty bad, so bad the sizes of the screen even showed image retention. I am almost out of the 1 year warranty so I am sending mine in for repair. Very odd

Thanks. I will look into it later today. After watching several tear down videos I finally spotted the pink dot right below the camera lens as I flip over the circuit board, that's where I mostly feel hot to the touch in the first place when heavy using. Cooling it down sounds like a great idea indeed.
Edit: did it and I can't tell too much of a difference. Scored 94K in Antutu, far from the 147k the day I bought this unit.
Hope it will get better by the time. At least I don't face retention anymore.

Glad you dont have any retention. LG has actually already repaired & shipped mine, I sent it in on Monday. That is a bit faster than I expected. It is scheduled to be delivered Saturday.
What is weird is what they gave as the reason for repair. Has me a bit concerned because I basically voided the warranty 2 ways via root exploit and replacing the thermal paste. But it still says they repaired it rather than replacing it.
Just a heads up to others, since I bet a lot of you purchased it near release. I was very close to being out of the 1 year warranty, so if you have serious image retention/ghosting/whatever you might just bite the bullet and send it in now.

Retention is long gone now since I applied Kcal settings - the main reason to root my device for - using Werewolf kernel along with kernel auditor. The thermal paste is a tribute of appreciation to the CPU doing an amazing job by now and deserves such care from me. I'm glad you have yours repaired though I wouldn't send it in meaning I had to disband my phone for at least a couple days due to above situation.

What about brightness? And you are saying we should keep those settings for 20mi? On what screen -> dark or bright? Doesnt matter?

So, I've had my Nexus 5 since November 6th, and like most phones it gets warm when doing anything intensive. Now, I don't play very many games and really nothing too demanding. Perhaps the primary game I play which seems to warm my device up is the Simpsons Tapped Out game. All things aside, I never felt that my device got "too" warm. Battery temp never went above 100 F (37.7C) that I was able to determine, however there was most certainly a "spot" on the back located just below the camera and dead center of the device. This spot was mirrored onto the LCD area as well. Again, I never thought too much of it, however Friday night (November 16th) I noticed that when the screen was on, but showing a black or similarly dark background there was now a blue-ish circular / oval shape essentially "burned" into the screen. I don't know how else to describe it. This spot coincides directly with the location of the RAM / CPU combination on the internal board.
So, my question, has anyone else experienced distortion of their screen? Presently, while noticeable on dark screens, it's not overly damaging. However, I fear that continued normal use of the device may cause cumulative damage. I plan on contacting Google direct on Wednesday when I have some time due to work, but I'm also worried that due to the RAM / CPU placement, this may be a bigger issue than 1 unlucky phone. Perhaps improper heat shielding?
For the record, I am using the images from http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016 to make my assumptions and conclusions

My one got the same problem, just ordered replacement.
Maybe, the glue behind the glass had dried faster due to the higher temperature in that portion of the screen, causing a different light transmission just there, i think imho.

omg.. what a disaster of phone. If this is true then ALL of the screens will get like that if the user makes some decent use of the phone to play or so.

I highly doubt that there are different revisions of the glue behind the screen, so if one is bad, then all the nexus 5 until this was spotted will have it bad too..

Don't do that, if this starts happening to everyone, they WILL have to rma everyone's nexus 5 out there without asking.
This is by far the major problem of this phone. A true pain for google.

It seems definitely that the overheating of the cpu has modified the structure of the lower layer of the lcd panel and the backlight has a different effect in that part of the screen.

Are you 100% stock? i played Dead trigger 2 and TR2 yesterday for like 3 hours non stop the back of the phone was pretty warm but not blazing hot i check my screen using the app called LCD tester and i see no spots like on your device
if your 100% stock google added thermal limiting to the CPU witch could have prevented this.
I don't think it's the glue. It's probably just a bad CPU. Not all nexus 5 are created equal. Mine barely gets warm from playing 3d intensive games while on the charger so I'd just RMA yours.

Like my device. Gets warm but not hot. If your 100% stock Google added thermal limiting I think it was due to this and not burning out the CPU

Hello i just wanted to say that i also have this problem though i do not have the blue spot where the cpu and the ram are located but just above the icon bar. How is this possible? Does the battery also get that hot?

To find out if it is screen burn, try standard screen burn reversal techniques. If it doesn't reverse at all, it's not burn

I know this is a dinosaur post that Im digging up but I have a similar issue and couldnt find much info on it.
Basically my Nexus 5 took a really bad fall from someone elses hand and the screen was fine except for a bit of light bleed and colour distortion which went away in the next morning
Now if I use a 2A charger or if I play on it for too long, screen gets a pinkish hue and a spot like this appears and the phone goes a bit hot but it goes back to normal later
doesnt always appear under normal use or if I use a 1A charger
Is this an LCD problem, overheating issue of cpu, motherboard issue or display ribbon?

same thing happened to my Nexus 5 top right corner.. i Sold it and bought a new one. :good:
Now this really isn't an issue at all but it was pointed out by my friend. There may be other ways of noticing the same but here's how I do it.
Sit in a dark room, as dark as possible (best at night).
Increase the brightness to maximum.
Open any video on MX Player, pause it and zoom out (decrease video size) as much as possible.
Observe the corners around the chin of the device. You should see some light leaking through.
Now of course this isn't an issue you'd encounter normally but it just kinda freaked us out. Any idea what might be causing it? I have no technological knowledge about displays except for the fact that pixels are turned off for black areas in AMOLED displays. We don't have navigation keys backlight either.

There should be no light leak/bleed on an AMOLED screen phone, that is common for IPS screens.

Doubt it's possible to have "rogue" pixels but I will have to see for myself when mine arrives. But my friend who has it never complained about it, so I have a feeling only a certain batch of them might have this issue.
There also might be a chance it's related to software, so did you try using another rom?

It certainly is weird. I mean that light bleed doesn't exactly appear to be "rogue" pixels either. Plus it's rather too dim to be noticed unless you're sitting in an absolutely dark room with your brightness maxed out and about 75% of the screen totally black (which would rarely ever happen). I believe it could be possible that every unit has this but never really has been noticed by anyone.
The issue isn't that great for me to switch to another ROM and test it. Just wanted to bring this to everyone's notice. I'm on OOS 5.1.11 (rooted)

I did not send them back because of this tho, however i also recognized that both of them had really bad uniformity issues and it looked like the edges were bleeding. I observed that on a white background. I am living in germany and ordered from amazon, the second one got dust in it's front camera lense, when it arrived and the first one was emitting a loud static noise, like coil whine. It's insane, I just want a proper working phone. Not sure, whether I should order a 3rd one.

Wow that's a really big let down on Amazon's part to send defective units, and that too twice! However, I checked my screen for any such uniformity issues both on black and white but didn't find any such except for this one. And I repeat again, this is barely noticeable and is visible only when you're in absolute dark, with maximum brightness on black screen.
Although such a thing is ignorable but it's something which isn't really expected from OnePlus.

I ordered from Amazon, because I heard the OnePlus support is really unprofessional sometimes and certain things take ages.

But I ask: Is it a wise idea to replace the thermal paste on the copper plate? And if so any brand recommendations or are there any incompatible thermal pastes out there to be avoided because of their composition? I notice the back of the tablet gets quite warm at times.
As for the touchscreen: I can see the screen is badly marked after close to 7 years of use. The letter "i" on the virtual keyboard is dead, and I can no longer swipe properly in twrp recovery. Swiping the wipe page will cause other partitions to be selected. Fortunately the swipe never succeeds in launching the flush or format.
Could this be a symptom of another more serious hardware issue -- the fact that the touchcreen is totally useless in twrp but only a little broken in user mode?

Yeah thanks. I have seen these youtube offerings , and others. Do you have any advice about redoing the thermal paste for the processor? The tablet can get pretty warm at times.....I do not want to bork the tablet with the wrong type of thermal paste.

Please note, you don't need any clue because the thin copper heat sink, shown in step 1 of the video, is self-adhesive. Take off the heatsink carefully by a light spin. Some glue fixes it on the CPU. On the left and on the right site are black or grey tapes. Remove the tapes carefully. Keep all together safe during the repair.
As you can see on the video the last step will be to put the thin copper heat sink back again with a light press down. It will stick again like before.
Did you meanwhile get the touchscreen of your device replaced successfully?
Have a Note 9 which I'm keeping, just got the Ultra and the display is a disappointment.
Side by side with the 9, colors are not as vibrant, contrast is so-so, sharpness is off. Fine details, icon edges, etc. are fuzzy.
Now, I'm anal about this kinda stuff. If I never saw the 9's screen, I'd never know and think it's fine, and to most, it would be. But this is me you're talkin' to. ?
I don't know whether to return it or pray for a Samsung fix. I'm not a gambling man. I've gone through every display setting and resolution there is, including dev options. I'm pretty experienced.
Maybe it's Nova launcher, but it's just not as nice as the 9's screen. Exact same home screen, icon theme, everything identical.
Your thoughts/opinions/gut feelings? Got till next week to return to Best Buy.

You're 100% right, my N20U has a yellowish dirty white look to it when compared to my N10+
I doubt Samsung sees this as a defect until all of us report it as a defect so they can fix it with a software update.
Using vivid mode with green slider turned to lower setting helps but that's about it...

I posted in another thread that I got an app - Screen Balance - from the play store. With that I was able to get rid of more green as it has several adjustments for white balance. Use various adjustments judiciously. I like things cool. Seems *all* amoleds look green to me anyway.
Lest anyone thinks I'm spamming the app, since I mentioned it in another thread, I am not. Just a much happier user. ?
Doesn't solve the aforementioned problems though.
My gripe is temporary image retention. Using dark mode and gray screens, sometimes, the outline of the keyboard will remain on the screen for 5-10 seconds. I notice that if one uses the phone in light mode, it seems perfect, but once in dark mode, it has some minor flaws.
It's funny to see so many of these posts popping up. I made a post about this before as well that the screen has an overall yellowish greenish overtone to it. In fact, mine got worse. Now I have screen burn in. It's crazy since I don't have my phone at high brightness. It's somewhere in the middle. This is the first time I have to have a screen replaced. I miss my note 9 so much. If the note 9 had an ultra wide camera, I would so have kept it. This is likely the most problematic note I've owned. I had 3 note ultra in the past and they are all the same in terms of display. There's no escaping it. If you call the Samsung costumer service, they aren't allowed to admit issues with the device that Samsung hasn't cleared for them to admit, so they'll deny any screen issues at this time. I was going to trade this in for the Oneplus 8 pro, but they aren't taking Note 20 ultras as a trade in device, so may still sell or try to hold on till S21 ultra and pray by then Samsung corrects this new line of Amoled screens.
This is the screen burn in that I have unfortunately. Going to get the screen replaced, hopefully this weekend.

Burn-in does not show in screenshots, It will only be visible on your device as it is the physical screen with the damage

Then it's a mystery what that anomaly is. I am not the only one as a member in another forum posted similar. Image retention maybe? I don't know. But whatever it is, it's not going away and the Samsung phone techs agree I need to change the screen. Hopefully the new one doesn't do this.

Oh geezzzz...that:s not encouraging.. looks like I'm holding on hoping for a soft/firmware update. A replacement would probly have the same or worse issue. No burn in here so far.
Definitely keeping my note 9!

Your screenshot looks clear to me on my PC, so if you are seeing burn-in then it will be on your screen and will need a replacement, what I was saying is you cannot send someone a SS to show them the burn-in, they would need to look at your screen with their eyes

I've never had such screen anomalies before. Still can't understand how it got there since I don't keep my phone at max brightness. Guess I got unlucky this time around.

Same image on the screen for extended periods can cause it too, so if you're always in WhatsApp chat or Facebook app and the same thing is always on the screen you'll be more likely to see it then too

Yeah i used to worry a lot about this as i know there are batches of screens that have this problem. Initially i thought the green yellow tint problem was also in some batches esp when Display mate gave this screen such high rating, which means they are all who have sold their souls for money and not honest, so thought mine was a bad batch but it seems everyone has this tint issue. Its sad that you have burn in but its more common than you think. Many people got it with the Samsung View case too.

Yeah, pretty unfortunate. I did see the issues with the Samsung cases causing the burn in as well. What's funny is that if you speak to a supervisor at the Samsung customer service number and tell them about the screen issues and you have someone else with a Samsung phone call them back hours or a day later and get the same supervisor, they'll tell you that they never had one complaint about the screen. Unless Samsung instructs them it's an issue they can fix, they will not admit it. Still hoping Samsung can correct the yellowish greenish overtone of the general display.

The punch-hole's circumference is noticeably jagged. Please zoom in on the image attached. You'll see that the boundary of the punch-hole circle is not smooth. Apologies if the image does not convey my point. You may check you own device's punch-hole on full brightness, on a white background to get the idea.
I'd like to know if this is the case with every unit of Pixel 6a or if this is normal.
There's also some very tiny amount of green-tint/rainbow-ish effect around some part of the circumference of the punch-hole, although it is barely visible and is probably just my eyes' fault.

Are you talking about the pixels themselves on the display?
Pixels are square. The punch hole is a circle, so it's going to look like that if you zoom in enough.

Mine looks fine and so does yours. Yeah if blow up your macro shot to 3x can see maybe not laser perfect but the circle is also cutting over pixels, so that's to be expected. I don't notice any rainbowing on mine

Thanks for the reply. I was referring to the boundary/border/circumference of the black punch-hole. I suppose I was being too critical. From a normal distance it all seems fine.

Run Screen Test to determine the color integrity of the pixels around the hole. Colors should be uniform. I always test the display on a new phone and as it ages.
Thanks for the response. I might run a screen test, although the screen seems perfectly fine as it is from average working distances. I was probably being way too ocd about the whole issue.

An interesting thread. The flashing proximity sensor threads were common a while back. One or two flashing pixels on phone calls drove some Samsung users mad. Never even notice it before
Always a good idea to run Screen Test to help spot display issues especially on a new device or one that's under warranty.
I test my 3yo N10+ every month or two. It's bright so don't linger too long when doing it.
Any display pixel anomalies are easy to spot.
Any wrong color pixels at the hole would confirm you suspicions. With 20/10 vision and no magnification though the hole should seem smooth, at least on a N10+.
