As you might have noticed, Android 8.0 codename Oreo has been officially released today.
Let's discuss all news, speculations, development, and opinions on Android Oreo, especially for our Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices.
not much to discuss - S8 still on Android 7.0 when even Nokia is on 7.1
Id say - expect it on Galaxy S9 - next year in March
If im wrong - i ll buy you a beer
The S8 does literally everything that's highlighted as a new feature in Oreo

I just wish the MMS bug was fixed. 7.0 has the issue, 7.1 doesn't and it's super annoying.
I think that there is a lot to discuss, mostly about design , UI
As every new major os update samsung ui is completely different. Remember Kitkat then lollipop on galaxy s6 , then marshmallow on galaxy s7 and nougat on s6 7 8 is one of the biggest changes. So did you expect or want (or not) ui changes both in system interface and icons , or getting closer to aosp look? I personally love the s8 ui and icons but I think I could be nice to have in apps instead of pure white , a white that is just a little little bit tinted with app accent color, I mean in the dialer app for example, instead of white background, a white that is a little bit tinted with a very light and pastel green . I could bring a little bit of color and uniqueness to all of the apps

Android O has already been confirmed for the s8/s8+.
The reason Samsung hasn't updated to 7.1 is because it's not really needed since the s8/s8+ already does everything 7.1 has to offer.
It's speculated that Android O will be released for the s8/s8+ in January.

There are tons of changes under the hood and bugfixes to Android you know?

Wondering if Touchwiz will be updated on the S8 when it gets Oreo. Or would it just be what we have now (8.1) with Oreo underneath. I got the S8 purely for the hardware, never been a fan of touchwiz.
What Android O features is Samsung going to replace or just not implement? That's an interesting question.
Was rocking an iPhone 7 for a while, but when ios11 got announced and offered literally nothing of value I said "F this" and came back to Android.
I miss the Play Edition phones.

on android 8 on galaxy s8, Samsung experience is expected to jump from actual 8.1 to 8.5
Haha Android Oreo. Samsung won't release anything for maybe 9 months. Your better off wishing for a bootloader unlock then installing a custom rom which modi likely won't happen for maybe 6 months.
Android O has copied / borrowed a lot from the Samsung Experience UI. It's notable in terms of functionality and also in certain UI-design, such as the revamped settings menu. It looks nearly identical to the one on the S8.
Except for a few under-the-hood optimizations Android O has NOTHING to offer to an Galaxy S6 or newer Samsung device. We already have ALL features of the Android O feature list. There is no need to getting Android O in my opinion. It's nice that those new features are borrowed from Samsung and integrated into vanilla Android but that's all there is to it. I don't need Android Oreo but I do appreciate the security updates. Keep in mind that Nougat on the S8 has a lot more features and built-in features than Vanilla Nougat! Oreo simply narrows the gap between Vanilla and the current flagship leader, Samsung in terms of usable functionality that is genuine handy with day-to-day usage.

If I am not mistaken note 8 is at 7.1 and it's a same hardware like s8 cpu wise so I think that we will get 7.1 very fast

Yea I wouldn't go that far.
Everyone wants to have Android O on their S8. If all we get from this day forward is nothing but security updates. You'll be in the very small minority and everyone else would cause a scene and either abandon their 8 or beg Samsung for it.
Samsung has been doing a good job at keeping the S8 updated so far. Hopefully they do a good timely update to Oreo. Having treble should make updates easier for them to push out.

Yes i get that - but its still android 7.0
Coming from the s6, i saw the exact same train of thought i see here, so im going to say its always going to be a samsung "thing". When i had my s6 and it was on MM, people were in such an uproar about nougat and even when they got it they still were. I was happy with MM, people moreso say oh what about the security updates, i was an a 7 month old rom and never had any issues and only moved to nougat roms when the one i was one stopped updating.
Now i have the s8+, had it 3 weeks now and im not even thinking about the Oreo update right now, im happy with what i have, and when Oreo does come out for the phone i'll see how people find it 1st rather than jump in head first and then regret it.
I know Samsungs update policy so im not going to get in a huff about the update, people not so aware may not share my feelings.

I'm really hoping Samsung will skip 4.4.4 and just get on with Android L. That would probably mean a faster roll-out(I think?). Anyone still don't have news about a new UI? I know it's highly improbably though

Have anyone saw if we're getting update for the androod O?
The only sure thing is "updates for 2 years" we just dont know how many there will be.
I think we will be lucky if we see 7.1.X updates or EMUI 5.1 ...
After all if they give you Android 8 on Honor 8, how will they convince you to buy a new mobile in 1.5-2 years ? Its a market thing...
Same happened with OneplusX , you like it? you want more? buy a new model.
I do not believe we get the update on Android O.
Samsung keep their promise and gave android 5.1 for my old Galaxy s4.
If I couldn't receive 2 years update, I will erase the Huawei from list and Me, nor some one near me will never buy Huawei again. It's simple like that. We call it "trust". And miss using trust is a "one time" mistake.
I think we could receive it.
I personally don't it. We went five months without a simple security update. A full OS overhaul seems unlikely to me.

Not entirely irrelevant. Nougat brought native replies within notifications, that wasn't possible on Marshmallow (without Xposed). If Huawei's customizations bring the same or comparable features to an older version, I can live with that, but they don't always.

Agreed, though their target market in China prefers devices that behave similarly to iOS. Thankfully EMUI5 / Nougat is much closer to AOSP than EMUI4 / Marshmallow.

I wish it will happen in EMUI 6
Personally i hope but i think not. They don't even want to update to 7.1. Think about this, they made P8 (flagship version not Lite one) with a good hardware to support android 7.0 and even 7.1 and guess what? They killed it in favor of P8 lite 2017 that comes with Nougat and the hardware is just slightly different. The P8 just receives security patch updates (at least this phone receive it, we not), nothing more. I agree with those who say is a marketing thing. Talking about our phone, i think it's capable to get 7.1 and even O but probably it will die after the "Big" update with some EMUI 5.1 features on our EMUI 5.0. If we're lucky we'll get by time some security patch updates but nothing more. I wish they can keep their promises about 2 year updates, but actually i'm pretty diffident. Hope they can show me that i'm wrong
I think Honor 8 will receive another major update.
The fact they won't update Honor 7 (Yes, compatibility issues, but still...) disappointed lots of buyers. Making the same mistake with Honor 8 would destroy the reliability of the brand. I hope they're not so stupid.

Yeah, I agree; from what I read, it didn't sound like Oreo changes much for someone on S8+ Nougat. Nougat is a good version of Android; Samsung polishes that and it's hard to substantially improve what's already working rather well.

Yeah, the phone expeerience won't see many significant changes over the 7.1.1 build expected this/next month. Apart from the cleaner adaptive icons UI to make icons look more inline with one another (in supported apps) without the ugly white background with the normal icon on top.
But DeX mode will see big advantages! i.e. mouse capture will enable you to play first person shooter games just like you would on a PC!, better multi-display technology will enable you to run a dual monitor setup in DeX!, Picture in picture mode will enable you to watch a video in a more clean UI (no titlebar showing) in the corner of your screen while you run other apps along-side in fullscreen.
And thats just a few of the improvements that could come to the PC/DeX experience! :fingers-crossed::victory:
Why does everyone wait for changes in the UI, forgetting about the changes in the kernel of the system? Personally, I'm much more interested in improving security in 8.0, autofill API and stuff.
And with fear I'm waiting for the gluttony of the new version)

Also the new driver model, making it easier to upgrade to future Android versions even after the devices end of life and keeping the GPU drivers upto date via the Play store can help to boost performance and security more frequently, without the need to upgrade the devices firmware!
Just adding to the last two posts: I am missing app shortcuts a lot. Samsung is somehow lazy (as in the past) with updates, they are usually 1 year behind, even for their flagship devices, not to mention their "second row".
7.1.1 build next month??? Meh....it should be 7.1.2....again: Typical for Samsung.

I would like the app shortcuts as well, but it's not just Samsung that is lazy on that bit, and for the 7.1.2, Isn't that mainly for the Pixel phones? 7.1.1 is what all accept Pixel is using and have used for the last months.
But I think that the S8/S8+ should have come with 7.1.1 out of the box, but glad to see that we get the latest security patches each month.

Yeah, I hope that Samsung gives us the adaptive icons, I love the stock Samsung launcher, but it looks so bad when most of the icons doesn't match the rest of the UI, and not to talk about if you try to use some custom icons from the theme store, that sh*t gets ugly fast.
With regards to app shortcuts, I believe that requires Android 7.1.1/SDK 25 to work correctly...

I agree, kernel changes are important too. It would be great take source code for Oreo S8/S8+ kernel (i.e., when published), add support for various useful stuff, then compile your own modified kernel. International S8/S8+ people are lucky, but US Snapdragon S8/S8+ owners are screwed until bootloader unlock....

Really !!! Why do people buy Samsung Devices ?
Yes I own a Galaxy S7 and yes I know what board this is but
The phone provided to me by work and I am stuck with it
This is a work phone I can not debloat, root, do custom ROMs
So what do I have,
I have a device that will never see Android 8.1, hell even the S 9 is at 8.0 "You know the S 9 may get Android 9.0 in the summer of 2019 if they are lucky.
I will not hold my breath for even 8.0
Every second day it seems Samsung pushes on my device some "Samsung" bloat they think I want, I which I can never uninstall and if I try to disable it, it will turn back on.
They feel they have a great, interface..... Without Nova Launcher I will be lost.
Thank you for not having Bixby..... maybe Samsung will decide to push that piece of junk to the S7 but for now I am free
Really I hate the S7, the bloat, being locked down, the lack of updates but people still buy them ?
Why ?
Maybe a major market is Corporations that like locked down devices.
Yes the company says here is your S7 ..... enjoy.
I hate the Samsung S9 so much I may actually buy my own device for work "The Pixel", think I will wait for the Pixel 3 but then ..... to Samsung so long and thanks for the Bloat.
Because they are good at making commercials so they lie people. And people are stupid and buying every year the new Samsung. They don't give a damn about android, they just want the latest model from Samsung.
@andrei1412
Not really... Samsung is simply the best hardware manufacturer, best amoled display (always the brightest every year), best camera (yes other manufacurer are building nice ones too), really good build quality overall, Samsung theme store (to establish android vanilla look, who else is featureing this?). You don't need to debloat since you don't neeed to use the samsung apps. Debloating can lead to increased battery drain.
As they said above, usually the best hardware for droid phones at that point in time and the Samsung hype makes it same league as iPhone so anyone who dislikes Apple usually go Samsung if they don't go HTC, or moto. For me I have owned the majority of every galaxy s and these phones with custom roms always seemed to be the best droid phone on the market in terms of battery life and performance.

Probably not worth it if you use those features, I think some of the roms can be ran with no root cause there based on stock and still use that stuff but I'm not sure about Knox. I've only had this s7 flat for a week and tried, bobcat rom, slim stable 2.0, and I'm on ultimate nougat now. I'm really liking ultimate nougats look with the theme, battery life so far, and the debloat.
These 3 seem stable but there's a ton of roms to choose from so you would have to test for yourself to determine your best and read/ sift through the threads and see what people are saying about the rom.
You can disable all bloat using a package disabler, which works without root. Android 8.0 is coming in 2 weeks, and I don't know why you even want 8.1 because there are almost no changes to talk about. Even 8.0's most notable feature PIP has been available in Samsung devices for a long time.
Your problems about rooting and custom ROMs are only because it's a work phone.
It looks like you didn't research any of your problems before coming to rant here :/

We (as a household) have a rather large number of Samsung devices - the S7 is, in fact, the first one that was NOT purchased deliberately (I got it as a gift) and replaced the far-older Galaxy Nexus (which I got from my mother). We also have two Galaxy tablets and four Samsung HDTVs (and two Samsung optical drives). Why all the Samsung hardware? Three words - bang for buck. Look at ALL the areas in which Samsung makes hardware (from Android to PC to appliances they have (and rather consistently) offered top-ten bang-for-buck - and not just in the US; if you do that, your products will sell. Are they perfect? No; however, who is? Even the folks that have DINGED Samsung admit that it is often due to issues with a specific Samsung product or a specific lack (in the case of the S7, it's about the locked bootloader). Still, is an unlocked bootloader that big a plus on the devices that compete with the S7 and up? How many of those devices have issues WORSE than those of the S7 and above - even with the locked bootloader (such as the Pixel and Pixel2)?

8.0 Not in Canada and I do not know if Rogers ever plans on it. "Think I seen somewhere Summer 2018, oh sure"
BK Package Manager only disables and freezes, nothing that you can not do without buy it. "Can not uninstall and with only 5Gig left it would be good to get rid of some bloat"

Ah, if a phone ain't got the latest and greatest government tracking software I don't want it. So I'm gonna go to xda and post a "why do people buy" but talk about samdung bloat over all mighty Google. I hate I hate I hate. People should just buy Google devices cause I like them!!!! They push the only thing I care about, the .1's, and oh, you need to see what they do when they jump a full .0 again. Oh man
What 8.0/8.1 feature are you desperate for?
What other sub 5.3" phone has best amoled screen, top camera, large battery, top procecessor, wireless charging, ip68? Please tell me of this other phone

I'm also in Canada and usually we get updates without delay after their release from Samsung. From what I've seen (on their OS upgrade schedule), they only announce the release dates for updates a couple of days before we actually get them. My source is another phone carrier in another country: http://www.guncelmiyiz.com/akilli-telefon .
For the bloatware, you can uninstall all updates and keep the stubs (which will remove most of the app), and then freeze the app using AdHell or SABS. Although there isn't much bloatware to start with on phones in Canada.

This is one of the most imbecile rant I read on XDA so far: the real question is why your company is giving you a phone you don't like and you should ask your company.

most imbecile rant I do not call people names maybe you should look in a mirror.
You know what I find imbecilic is Samsung fanboys, you claim you like Android yet you sign up with a company that does not give you a pure Android Experience.
You are so blind to Samsung you do not realize their hardware is not significantly better than from other manufacturers.
Amoled unless if you are and anal idiot, displays are subjective
Top Camera this is a S7 while the camera is good "it is not the best"
Large battery do you suppose other phone have significantly worse better live ?
Top processor many phones have newer generation processors, but like the "best" display the processor even on a 2 year old device runs everything fine.
Wireless Charging is at times convenient but not a deal maker you do know Wireless chargers are slower and not as efficient as chargers that some people have a hard time with figuring out. "Do some research look it up"
IP68 once again, you know out of the several dozen Android devices I purchased ....... not one ever got water damaged.
Out of all of these ......
I rather have Android as it is meet to be from the inventors non modified and non skinned
Hardware be damned
And yes I know what Google introduced in 8.1 https://www.xda-developers.com/android-8-1-oreo-developer-preview-features/
The Essential phone skipped Android 8.0 and when directly to 8.1
Samsung S9 and S9+ released with 8.0
Rogers at the time only had the Samsung S7, no other devices.
Flaming is not tolerated on XDA and any escalation in this thread will result in action against the users at fault and/or the thread being closed.
Hopefully this discussion can be a civil exchange of opinions from both Samsung haters and lovers alike. We must all accept that as human beings, each one of us is entitled to our opinion and/or preferences, regardless of whether they're seen as logical or not by others.
Keep it cool, dudes.

They may not have significantly better hardware now, but it was still the best of its time. The camera was the best until the Pixel came out half a year later. There were no compromises with this phone, and as much as you try make hardware features not seem not as important, they make a difference when choosing between something like a iPhone 6s/7 and another device.
And now I ask, how is anything of what you've said detract from the Android experience? Samsung may add features to Android, but they don't ever take away. I can also fully reskin Touchwiz to look like stock with any theme I like using Substratum and Nova Launcher. I also don't know why Android 8.1 is so important to you, as everything is just a UI change.
You probably shouldn't have bought a 2 year old non-Google phone if you wanted to jerk off to having the latest UI from Google. Also, you should realize that many people don't care about simple UI changes or optical differences. Maybe if we were iOS users, we would care, but this is a forum for Android enthusiasts.
Don't call others fanboys or other silly names just because they have different expectations when they buy a device.

I guess we will see in 2 weeks. Again, when is the last time Samsung announced the specific date for an update well before it releases?
I did not start the name calling but when "coradux" called me an imbecile, who would not take it personally.
I own a S7 now, will likely be buying a Pixel XL 3 "or whatever it is called in October"
Some people like me want quick updates and pure Android, others do not care.
I really did not know what I hoped to prove from this post. I think it should be closed.
Hi,
My previously smartphone is a galaxy note 8 and I liked one UI interface , status bar, and nav bar, application drawer.
And I would like to know if it is possible to integrate one UI in my OnePlus 7 pro ?
Thank you in advance
Cordially,
I highly doubt it BUT you could probably theme it with substratum if you wanted
No. And prob wont happen, OneUI is a lagfest and wont be a thing developers Will even think about.
Tbh id you liked OneUi u shouldve picked a Samsung for your new device. Oneplus is all about speed, stable + features that doesnt make your phone lag.

It's possible.
You just have to make it.
OneUI has made a LOT of improvements over its previous TouchWiz versions, but OOS is pretty awesome as-is. If you want a OneUI devide, get a Galaxy S10
I've had both, but prefer OnePlus device with OOS ecosystem!
I absolutely agree, I had an S9+ before and after switching to 7 Pro, I couldn't be any happier.
The development support on Galaxies just sucks, manufacturers have made it in a way that people can't but run only stock rom to their satisfaction.
And once you've tripped Knox, that's it, can never use SPay, Health, etc. ever. At least there should be an option to lock bootloader back again. Samsungs just suck big time.

Nothing is impossible, it can happen just like the op6
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/development/rom-samsung-oneui-t3898627/page14
I had an s9+ for 3 weeks I really tried to like it, gave up and got the 6t then when the S10+ came out I bought it really tried to like it kept it for 2 months got really tied of the fingerprint frustrations and gave it up and got three 7 pro. I liked the S10+ but always missed the 6T. Battery and snappyness. Came to 7 pro and I was like f**k Samsung.
They use older processors, they give you crappy interface. Well I do miss 1 hand operations+. Root sucks on Sammy. Op all the way.
Guys please, he's not asking for a rant about OneUI, hes just asking if a port is possible.
To answer the question, yes it is most likely possible to port OneUI for our phone just like it was done with the MIUI, but it will be the full Samsung System then and no more OxygenOS. Apart from that I doubt that anyone is willing to take the enormous effort that is needed to take such a project
You can install GSI, but I doubt fingerprint, front camera, quick charge,... would work
I am a fan of OneUI but since using Oneplus 7 pro everything has changed .... I vote for Oneplus UI.
do not need One UI ROM, I have ordered the note 10+

Yea, sammy phones are bloated, but actually some features are really nice. If anyone would be able to port the weather widget, or the game launcher, that would be nice.
