NO ROOT REQUIRED - Volume Booster - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 General

This will be a short and simple thread. I have a Fire HD 8 and HD 7, with the 7 being rooted. In my opinion, they lack a few notches in the volume control. I have found it incredibly difficult to find an app or Xposed module that would actually boost the volume of the Fire tablets, with or without root...until today.
On my rooted HD 7, I have Xposed installed along with the Gravity Box module, which has a volume boosting option, however it doesn't work. I've tried many apps on both devices, to no avail. However I had recalled an app I used on my phone before I rooted it, and just remembered it today.
Introducing 'Volume Booster by GOODEV'. It's simple, easy and takes up virtually no space at all (less than 1MB). I just installed it so I can't speak for battery consumption as of yet. There are only a few settings, all of which are pretty self explained. It also forces a notification to remain in the statusbar so the system doesn't shut it down. This option can also be disabled or set to appear in the statusbar only when active. You can increase the volume as much as 40% above the maximum level. The app is 100% free, but does contain ads (images below have ads cropped out).
I've found it to echo a bit on the HD 7, but works perfectly on the HD 8 once you calibrate it. Setting it to above 8% will cause a bit of static for some sounds.
**Warning**: I am NOT responsible for any damage done to your device or your hearing. Use at your OWN risk. Please be very careful using this app. It can potentially cause hearing damage when using headphones, or even permanently damage your speakers. I recommend a setting no higher than 7 or 8% above maximum, but please test it at lower levels until you're satisfied.

The Speaker Boost app by Omega Centuri is essentially the same app as the Goodev one: it has exactly the same menu options which can't be a coincidence. I have tried both. However, this one does not ask for location and WiFi information and has no ads. For it to work properly notifications need to be switched on within the app, but if you go into Settings > Apps and Games > Manage All Applications and uncheck the notifications box under the app it works fine but without the notification box appearing.
I have it installed on the Fire 7 (both 5th and 7th gen) and the Fire HD8 (both 6th and 7th gen). I think the audio is slightly distorted at times on the HD8 (7th gen) even with low boost levels (<5%) but this may be a problem with my particular tablet.

Thanks for the info about notifications. I often forget about that toggle in settings. Very good to know. Though I am particular about my desktop, so I prefer it in the notifications for easy access. Nonetheless great info

Thanks for this. Bought a HD 10 this week and the low volume for notifications even when set to max was bugging me. Sorted now

I love this app. I use it with Viper4Android even on rooted devices as not even Viper can make up for the volume issues these tablets have. I own a Fire 7, HD 8 and a HD 8.9 and all three of them seem to have volume levels which are way too quiet even at maximum. This app fixes that perfectly. You can also decide how much above maximum it should boost the volume.
If you are annoyed my the notification, simply go to settings > apps > all apps > select GOODEV and uncheck the notifications box. This will remove the constant notification only visually. That way the system won't shut down the app.

Thank you Dragonfire. I received a fire hd 8 2017/18 & the volume was sorely lacking. This app dealt with that issue nicely.
So once again Thank you for posting it.I
Cheers,
Azri

Thank you for pointing this out and the tip about not going above 8%. I have the zip file if anyone isn't on the Google Play Store

How to do what this app does myself?
Advice please.
I DO NOT want to root. There is no need for rooting.
There exists third party software available in the Play Store such as Volume Booster GOODev and others that boost effectively Galaxy S7 (and S6 when had) volumes to reachable desired dB levels WITHOUT having to root.
Problem is these apps only work sporadically and sometimes not uniformly across all various volume options. For example, YouTube will play loud but notifications and keyboard taps are quite but when playing YouTube over one of my Bluetooth devices, the notification sound jumps to loud and I am able to hear the keyboard taps.
All I want is to make the very same non rooting modifications that these third party apps are doing myself without having to depend upon spotting performance from these apps.

Every device is different but as a general rule system (or kernel) level access is required to decisively control output levels. Apps that claim otherwise are simply modifying volume levels on your behalf and/or artificially modifying the audio stream to make it seem louder.

Oh, thank you.
For at least two devices, Galaxy S6 and S7, these third party apps work.
Whatever these apps are doing, however they are doing, they work! Problem is not consistently.
All I want to I know how these apps are doing it so that I can do for myself so that the settings remain on consistently.

[APP & GUIDE]: Volume+ - Increasing your music gain & quality through your headset

[APP & GUIDE]: Volume+ - Increasing your music gain & quality through your headset
Hello guys and let us begin!
During my cohabitation with my beloved Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 , I had always one complain.
The bootloader was locked , battery life was awfull , there was no incall volume , camera gave too noisy pictures , the stock ROM was laggy , we didn't have fps uncaped...
...no seriously just one complain. I could never enjoy music being played on my headset using my mobile phone.
At this point many negative people may say that Android is not a music/multimedia platform and the hardware provided (headset etc.) is not of the best quality. Agreed! But I will answer we will have to work with what's being given.
So after using several custom ROMs equiped with DSP Manager I wasn't exactly getting the result I wanted. I had several undesired results such as:
The first few seconds of the song being played didn't actually play.
The bass was off the hook resulting in my headset playing a farty noise in my ears whenever there was a song that demanded deep bass.
I had generaly low volume resulting to not being able to listen to my favourite music while on my 3 hour bus travel every day to my university...
After some search around market and xda-developers forum I found the Volume+ application which is descent in it's free version BUT performs wonders as a paid version.
Now what I'm about to say onwards is about the paid version which in my humble opinion deserves its money.
AS THE DEVELOPER SAYS , I REPEAT TOO... THIS APP CAN GO -VERY- LOUD. I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF BY YOUR OWN MISTAKE YOU DAMAGE PERMANENTLY THE SPEAKER OF YOUR DEVICE.
First of we begin by setting any other equalizer stock or non stock to OFF. And if there is no disable option then we select the "FLAT" preset (that goes for stock Music player that can't disable its equalizer).
1.Then run Volume+ and chose Headset Settings.
2. Tick Speaker Modifications under Settings to Enable it.
Do not enable Virtual Room Effect. It's all about distortion imho.
3. Do -NOT- touch Basic Settings at all.
Basic Settings give some pre-made presets and none of them is good enough for x10. They all lack something and francly I've never been satisfied.
4. Tick Speaker Modifications under Advanced Settings.
That's for enabling the advanced equalizer to allow us to set each frequency channel independently.
5. Apply the following values.
Now these are the settings I use and I'm so much satisfied with them. They give me a rich overall volume , with correct frequencies.
At this point I want to say that if any other user has settings that believes are better than mine, feel free to post , share and explain!
Code:
Low: 100
Low/Mid: 120
Mid: 105
Mid/High: 100
High: 95
Volume Level: 7
Bass Boost: 8
Echo/Delay Level: 4
6. Although this application claims not to need a restart of device I strongly DISAGREE!
Reboot your device after you are done and under no reason should you kill the Volume+ service in case you are using a task killer/manager. Just add it to exceptions/white list.
So once you are done your settings must look exactly like this:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
How/Why:
In case you liked the result you can go on reading.
Those settings were not copied or found around the internet although I'm pretty sure anyone can Google and find something similar.
Those settings came from me and took quite a lot of my time since the whole process of "perfecting" them was listening to a bunch of different favourite songs (each song has its strengths and weaknesses) tweaking , restarting and again from the beggining. That's the best way to work with this application and needs quite a lot of patience but produces a neat result.
That being said , I want to say that my thing about music is that I'm a mainstream freak. So the songs I used to make my configuration are limited to certain kinds such as House , Electro , RnB/Hip-Hop , Pop , some slow Ballads. So for hardcore (Psy) Trance , (Death/Black) Metal , Opera listeners out there ... well guys , don't expect miracles!
Sample of songs used:
(Youtube quality has no relevance I just wanted a way to present them to you. I have those songs in full quality in my SDcard ofcourse.)
1. Claydee & Dimension-X - Call Me
(Pop with great vocals and hints of electro sounds and steady beat)
2. Alexunder Base ft. Mirela - Feelings (Club Version)
(Nice deep vocals and smooth bass. Also deep steady beat)
3. Fly Project - Goodbye
(Pop - High pitched tones during the reffrain natural and distorted guitar notes included)
4. Ela Rose ft. David Deejay - Lovely Words
(Nice deep bass , deep vocals , ambient sounds at the beginning)
5. MIMS - Move (If You Wanna)
(RnB - Very deep strong bass , human speech , harsh mid sounds like percussion)
...and about 20 others!
Regards!

[HOW TO] Make your Play the perfect in-car MP3 player!

Okay, so this thread may seem a bit odd, but there are people (myself included) who use their Xperia Play to blare music through their car stereos while driving. I've found that the best way to do this and not veer off the road (hey thanks SE for the really difficult to unlock phone.. ) is to do the following:
1) get root here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) download PowerAMP from the marketplace (just because I like poweramp... you can do this with the stock music player as well... blah.)
3) Download the free app "Change Shoulder Buttons" from the market
4) Go to the change shoulder app, click mode, then media.
5) Accept root permissions, do the Charleston, and rejoice!
The best way to change songs while on the road is to hit the home button (which lights up the screen) then hit the R shoulder button. It will change the song without you even having to unlock it!
I know this tutorial seems fairly obvious, or dumb, or common sense, but maybe I just saved someone out there from running over a cat because their stupid lock screen swipey thing wouldn't swipe, and they really didn't want to listen to That One Song.
Or you can get PlayerPro (which you should have anyway because it's the absolute best mobile media playing experience of any mobile operating system) and have a media player integrated right there in your lock screen :3

Ah, this looks great, but I made this thread on the idea of "eyes on the road, not on your phone" and although the lockscreen would be awesome for while I'm walking or something, I like having the ability to change songs without looking at my phone. Then again, for the life of me I cannot use my touch screen without looking, and I'm sure that most people here can do that. xP
Thank you for the find though! I will give it a try when I get home.

*scours settings* le woah! I originally didn't like this new Poweramp release, but it's starting to get better and better!
Just Shake app allows volume buttons to be used for previous/next track when the music player is playing or when the headphones are pluged in. Has many other features too like silencing the ring tone with the turn of the phone, answering/hanging up calls with a shake, or launchng apps with the shake when not phoning, and I believe does not require root. Also vibrates when the call ends. Give free trial a go, I purchased the app but do have a problem with it sometimes dying in the background - maybe converting it into system app if you have root fixes that - I will test.
I just use doubletwist for itunes syncing with my phone upside down in the car (since they put the lockscreen buttons on the bottom). Works well enough since I'm not dead or anything yet and it's free. It's just annoying that applications have a sucky/lack of support for creating dynamic playlists as compared to ipod touch/iphone.
CyanogenMod 7.1 uses the volume buttons to raise/lower volume and change songs with any music player.

increasing your Dalvik VM Heapsize may also help you with that problem
Depending on your car Bluetooth music is pretty nice. While the sound quality is a bit lower, I can connect to my phone without even taking it out of my pocket, and my steering wheel controls work to allow me to change tracks! Also on Pandora the controls move you to the next track. If I hit the source button on my steering wheel to go to the radio or something my phone pauses automatically as well. This is all built in I had no modifications made to the phone to do this.
My car is a 2010 Camaro SS, but I would imagine any GM car with BT music should do this. And any other brand for that matter.

I haven't gone Dalvik root yet, but was considering doing Link2SD to get more memory - what do you think about link2sd versus Dalvik cache please? By the way Just Shake has not failed since i made it a system app so far. I tried the same trick with "Skype on 3" but it still closes in background by itself - maybe this one does it when I lose internet or mobile connection in the tube etc.

Link2sd is better. To change the dalvik vm heapsize all you have to do is pull your build.prop open in wordpad, find the line that says dalvik vm heapsize =. And change the number to 48m. This will allow background apps a little more memory before system closes them

Better volume control needed on Android

I often listen to music on my Nexus 7 using Spotify.
At the same time I enjoy playing certain games, which inevitably have sound on them.
A lot of the time the sound on the game overpowers my music, and so when I go to turn the volume down, it turns down everything, including my music, so the game still overpowers the music.
When turning down the volume, and pressing the settings button that appears next to the volume bar (that displays the volume of media, notifications, ringer, etc.) it would be useful if the apps currently displaying sound would appear so you can change the volume of individual apps. So I could turn down the volume of my game however leave Spotify at full volume.
(Pretty sure this isn't possible right now?)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
So what you're saying is you want to change volumes of individual apps, through the Android system.
Bro, my Windows computer can do that, and I don't think my Mac can (correct me if I'm wrong). It can probably be done, but I don't think it would be easy to manage an interface for the volume of every app. When you go into settings-sound-volumes, it currently gives you all the adjustable sounds. Now imagine having a slider for EVERY app. It could amount to hundreds of different sliders!
Anyhow, it's up to the app developers to add a setting for volume of the game. Most do, just look around for it
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Basically, I'll explain with screenshots.
So when you change the volume, you click the settings button to the right of it.

Then the screen comes up with all the volume sliders.
In addition to what is already there, the apps CURRENTLY playing sound on the device (for example, temple run and spotify) would also appear and you could drag their individual sliders.
Make sense? Very much like the windows volume mixer

This would take the app developers changing how the volume is controled as well as Android adding the ability in. I really dont see this happening as most developers want everything built into the app so it is compatible with more android versions.

The app developer shouldn't need to do anything, the system should be able to control the volume of each app, as this would be a new Android feature, and doesn't need anything in the apps themselves updated.
Like the Windows Volume Mixer, apps don't need to change anything to work with it, Windows controls them itself.

This is not windows. Linux is a whole another story. The way the OS is made The app developers will need to hook into an options for the system to control the volume. It is a security feature built into linux to prevent apps or the system from interfering.

[Q] Has Android gone backwards in some areas?

Hi all,
I have just gone from a Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus running Gingerbread 2.3.6 to a new Moto G running Android 4.3 JellyBean.
I am disappointed with some of the features that I have lost from Gingerbread but I am not sure how much of this was Samsung TouchWiz features or general Android? Examples:
1: Swipe to call
- Samsung (Gingerbread) behaviour: Tapping once on a contact goes into contact details, swiping right on a contact calls them, swiping left messages them
- Moto G (ICS) behaviour: Tapping once on a contact calls them instantly, swiping left/right does nothing and changes screen area
Comments: I find the Moto G annoying as I am accidentally calling people when I tap on a contact to reset my finger position on the screen, rather than it simply go into the contact.
2: Volume / Sound Control
- Samsung (Gingerbread) behaviour: There are 4 volume sliders for:
Incoming Call
Media
System
Notification
- Moto G (ICS) behaviour: There are 3 volume sliders for:
Music, video, games & other media
Ringtone and notifications
Alarms
Comments: This is a big backward step to me. The notifications and ringtone volume are now linked so we can not set these individually. Why? Also, are system sounds the same as alarms?
3: Default email app
- Samsung (Gingerbread) behaviour: One can select the FROM field to be from any email account setup so you can reply to mail in one account but said the from field to be from your other account.
- Moto G (ICS) behaviour: This is not possible on the default email app I do not think.
4: Out of the box toggle switches
*I may not be calling this the right thing*
- Samsung (Gingerbread) behaviour: Has the options for wifi, bluetooth, gps, silent mode, auto rotation
- Moto G (ICS) behaviour: Has options for wifi and bluetooth. Other options have to be access via long press on power button and GPS I think is not able to be explicitly controlled anymore?
Comments: I think the app "power toggles" is powerful and can have options for various things to fix this.
Any thoughts?

Gravitybox has settings that let you unlink ringtone and notification sounds.
In order to get gravitybox you need to be rooted and have the xposed framework installed. Then once you're inside the xposed app you can find gravitybox under the downloads section.
Then once you're in the gravitybox app you simply go to media tweaks and check the "unlink ringtone and notification sounds" box.

Edit: Gravitybox also let's you customise power toggles in the status bar.

I agree with the Power Toggles app - it is awesome and allows for so much customisation. I wish I had discovered this three years ago! Instead I discovered it just last night
I also noticed that the default email app on Moto G lacks the ability to pinch to zoom. My messages are being formatted in a way that it seems they are slightly too zoomed in. On my old mobile I used to be able to just pinch zoom together a little to make this ok but this Moto G you cannot do this. I downloaded and tried K9 mail client and this is better and seems to allow zooming and formats message better. But...K9 notifications do not work on this phone. I just want to get it to a level where my basic stuff is working as it did before.
On android 4.4 the email client should be updated to which it can do all the things that are able to be done on the gmail app from the play store and hopefully this should bring some additional features. You might want to try the play store for a third party one if you require it.

Notification volume

Ringtones- fine
Notifications are really really weak tho, any way to boost them since there's no x-loud this time

I found a bug: setting the S-Force Front Surround option in the audio menu, phone does not ring when I receive whatsapp notifications.
I can't believe more people aren't mentioning this. I can barely hear notifications when the phone is in my pocket.
When you select the notification the volume is fine. Surely there's got to be some way of increasing it...
It really is ridiculously quiet.

I agree too - I'd like separate Notification/Ringtone volume adjustments. I never hear when I get e-mails of messages etc.
Can you better investigate this bug? It's an hw or sw problem?
Every people can confirm this? With all volumes at the highest level , notifications are like at the minimum in every app.
When you choose the sound....it is loud and clear..... then it become very very low...
Which fw have you?
It's the same on the Z2. Really can't see how Sony haven't sorted it yet (that's assuming they think it is a bug). Have tried different firmwares, the only thing that can sort it (on the Z2) is flashing a 3rd party fix which you really shouldn't have to do on a £500 phone!!
So, is there no way to boost up notification volume? I just live with it with vibrat functions, but i not like vibrating...
Guys... please go to Sony support forums and bash it out on them!

Not a single reply from them

I just found this issue. How the heck are we supposed to know when we get messages except constantly checking the phone...

Haha, I have gear live which works a treat, but seriously; the volume in general is very loud on full, but notification volume sucks
This worked for me but for right now am i having difficulties repeating the success.
1. Go to settings - sound - system notification sound: select no sound. Do the same with whatsapp settings.
2. Install lightflow. Go to lightflow notification settings, set an mp3 file other than the ones found preinstalled in your phone as individual notification sounds for whatsapp, whatsapp groups, gmail, messages etc.
3. Go to lightflow volume settings, activate individual lightflow notification sounds and adjust their volume to the max ( louder than phone ringing tones ).
I am using "nextel" sound that i downloaded from zedge ages ago. It now plays as loud as in my previoud phone LG G2. I am using it with whatsapp and am very happy.
I did try to replicate this procedure and cut a small piece of a moby song and set it as gmail notification sound. Not as loud as my whatsapp sound. The piece that i cut from the song wasn´t so loud to begin with. I´ll try again with a louder piece of song or a new zedge - tune when i have time.
Nice experiments but I do think we need to get Sony to recognise it as a proper issue. At least it is only software and should be easy to fix...right?
This problem comes from the Z2, if SONY wanted to fix it already would have.
I think we'll have to keep quiet Android L
The notification sound volume from Z2 is better than Z3. Now I rely on the vibration which I not like it.
I have the same problem with my Z3 Ringtones fine but all notifications are ridiculously low.
Can't even hear the "plop" when I send a message in WhatsApp and hear a incoming message notification.
Coming from the HTC Ones I'm very disappointing. On the One I had full control of all sounds, is it like so hard to make a drawer to control sounds the same way? Can't even root the phone to get a solution cause of the damn bootloader.

You just have to use normalized mp3s and there's no problem. Load your mp3s into Audacity or some other (free) sample editor, normalise them (it increases the volume uniformly, peaking at 100% usually), save them, copy them to your phone. Loud!

Still not normal that on a 600€ phone you need to do such things
I tried some notifications from Zedge but they are too loud now as you cannot change just notification volume without lowering ringtone..
