S8 port daily driver - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

Which s8 port can be used as a daily(best battery life,GPS,bt
) really I just want the slide on the side and the swipe tw

Some of them are Just OK for a few hours. But there are random reboots, Root can't be hidden without loosing AOD, GPS is funny. I've tried them all and I always end up on my own build with Edge panels. I just like the Grace UX. You can get the Edge Panels WITHOUT having to install a heavily modified ROM or S8 port. I'll share my mods in a few days when the latest build (DQG2) is available. IS NOT A COMPLETE CUSTOM ROM, just several mods to suit individual tastes.

Heh battery life isn't the greatest... Unless it's just my phone.. Or my battery

CM 11 vs Stock TW 4.3

I've been off stock TW for a while now, switched to Carbon until nightlies stopped and then jumped on the kit-kat bandwagon and ended up on CM11 official for the last month.
Today I decided to try out the 4.3 TW rom that is out.
For those who may be curious here is my very generic review.
I think the virtues of CM over stock are clear. CM is quick, light and full of customization's (especially with xposed)
But the drawbacks are the drivers. The RIL, camera wrapper, blue tooth. etc
I have pretty good 4g in my metro area, but where i live, i'm kind of on the edge. so I stay on wifi all of the time.
If i have to go off I get 2-4 bars of 3g and 1-2 bars of 4g.
With the CM 11 rom, I would barely get 1 bar of 4g, but it would most often switch to 1-2 bars of 3g.
I did a speed test and I got about .34 (that's 1/3 of a mb) /sec. so it was pretty slow.
When i loaded the 4.3 rom I was surprised that I held 2 bars of 4g almost the entire time I was off wifi.
I did a speed test and was getting 11mb down
Now, when i'm in a strong 4g area (as i drive towards the city) i get pretty good 4g on CM11, but at my house it's just not there.
So i spent a while wondering is switching to TW worth the signal gain that i would get. I was pretty happy on kit kat, it's quick and clean and i really enjoy how it feels. going "back" to TW 4.3 was hard, but with Wanam installed I was able to customize enough and freeze most of the bloat with TB.
Soo the main reason for posting this is due to the increased ability to hold on and utilize a 4g signal with stock.
If anybody was curious about the grass being greener on the other side, well it depends on your usage.
if your signal hungry and need your stuff to work consistently, go with 4.3 TW
If you live under a tower and want kit kat go with CM11
I'm on TW 4.3 as well after Beanstalk 4.4. I almost forgot how much better the camera looks on TW. Its like night and day versus anything based on CM.
My current setup is:
Greenified apps
Debloated/Froze as much as I wanted (I keep svoice for the camera control)
Winam
For the kernel I use trickster:
Raise voltages by +25 (even though my phone is a "fast" pvc)
2048/row
msm-dcvs
tcp congestion = yeah
zram = on
Now I'm debating whether or not to flash Crossbreeder..
Comparisons of roms generates arguments, users are encouraged to try them all and make their own determinations as to what works best for them.
Usage and experiences differ for everyone.

Any S6 user happy with their phone?

Hi guys, I'm going straight to the point: are you happy with your phone (in general, I know every phone has some minor annoyances)? I keep reading on the internet people that keep on lamenting about it (bad battery, laggy, awful RAM management, ect.), that's why I've opened this thread. I don't have the phone and I plan on buying it (it or the s6 edge or edge+, still have to decide - unfortunately the note 5 isn't coming to Europe anytime soon -), but all the reports are making me scared of buying it.
I'm happy with it. But you enjoy it more with root. Custom kernel fixes the ram issue, keeps the system speedy, custom roms add more features and debtor for better performance and ram management. So I'm basically enjoying it because of root
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Like osmosizzz above I can say that I am very happy with this phone. Once you root it and remove the bloatware this thing flies. Using a custom ROM and kernel I have better battery life, endless customization options and a speedy UI experience.
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I'd like not to have to root, I'm just tired of it (coming from a nexus 4), but I guess I might consider it if I buy the S6
You really dont have to have root as the phone is still plenty fast and with each update that comes out they are improving the software of the phone.
It's the best phone I ever had, my only gripes are aggressive memory management and the placement of the speaker (I usually end up covering it when holding it ), lag and battery are a lot better since the 2nd 511 update, the first update from 501 was rather laggy
I have 2 of this phone. here are my opinions:
1st phone (rooted and on XstrestoLite ROM)
I have great battery life, responses and everything seems fine except for the current bug with BOGG firmwares, which resulted in the keyboard lag when coming for lockscreen (Keyboard open delay about 3-6 seconds) check out my battery life here and here
2nd phone (stock and not rooted ever)
I find that the battery life on this phone not as great as my 1st phone, but however, everything is pretty smooth and great to me. But for a short time i had problems with GPS not being able to lock properly on Waze and Google Maps, however, not sure what happened (i didn't update the phone or anything) but it was back to normal again. and never happened again ever since.
Verdict: i love both my phones, i'll have them only until the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes out.
I owned this phone for over 4 months now. It never lag and blazing fast, the fastest android phone I've ever seen and the most amazing design I've ever seen too. It is just how the poor memory management kills apps at the background when you doing heavy multi-tasking, I've heard the 2nd 5.1.1 OTA fixed it. If multi-tasking is your concern, you should consider S6 Edge Plus comes with 4GB ram.
The battery performance is above average, imagine when you got this ultra smooth speed plus 2K screen and with only a 2550mAh capacity, I'll say it has done the job pretty well on battery life and enough to use a full day for any light to medium usage user. Heavy user will need a 2nd charge but it supports QC2.0(just get a QC2.0 powerbank) or wireless charging.
https://shopmeenova.appspot.com/st/p/mrg2.html
External storage can be overcome easily with this cute staff.
Since I'm a one-hand lover and the S6 size is the max. acceptable limit to me. I'm thinking to swap to Sony Z5 Compact later but that's s810 cpu overheating issue scared me away, I may just stick with S6 until S8 out, still not decided yet atm.
Its pretty good, but the RAM management and the occasional battery freakout (background drain) are irritating. If 5.1.1 fixes these 2 issues, I'm gold.
Before anyone tells me I can custom, its a work phone, I need full stock unrooted/knox intact otherwise I can't hook into my work's MDM systems (yes, its really nazi security).
But even without root, debloating via package disabler pro/debloater makes a noticeable difference to battery, which is a poor indictment of Samsung (6th generation Galaxy and still not learnt their lesson?).
The camera is out of this world and you get REALLY used to having a reliable fingerprint reader, I just rest my thumb stupidly on the home button on other people's phones (and if there isn't a physical home button I just stare stupidly at the screen for ~2 seconds lol).
I've never actually used the 'swap battery' feature so don't miss it, work phone so I got the storage bumped but if I paid for it myself I'd probably be irritated at the cost
One happy user here.
Battery life, my only gripe. Otherwise a perfect phone for me. Won't be rooting, just changed the launcher (Nova prime) and Skinomi case. Happy S6 user here!
apart from the camera I don't like any thing about this phone.
Best phone i,ve ever had, fantastic camera/screen/battery lasts me a full day no problems at all
Unhappy user here; bad battery life, laggy software, agressive memory resulting to bad multi tasking; will definitely change the phone.

I'm quite pleased with it, and I didn't even root mine. I'm especially impressed with the GearVR.
Count me with the happy owners!
I will root soon anyway to get more flexibility and customization.
Since updating to the EVR firmware (for network specific settings) I love it, super fast and great performance even with intensive games. My one issue is battery life; although it lasts the day with ordinary use it does drain after a while of continuous use, but then again with fast charging I just plug it in for a few minutes and all is good.
Is there any fix for the memory management?

Only thing I dislike about this phone is the battery, but as other have said. Root->custom rom + kernel (and MAYBE soon Xposed) and this phone is at least average in battery life.
If you don't root (and is a power user, the phone is not for you). With root + custom rom + few tweaks I can go around 3-6 hours SOT on data (depending on brightness) and 6+ on wifi. Without I barely hit 3.
Phones like the Xperia Z3 compact can hit 6 hours SOT without root. So yeah, if rooting this phone is great, if not it sucks from a power user perspective.

New Note Edge user: Low App resolution

Hey guys, just got my Note Edge. I do like it for the most part.
However I have realized that some apps just don't look right. Facebook for example just looks like it was designed for a lower res screen which makes it kinda blocky and big.
I tried reducing font size but that didnt help anything.
Also my Edge came with Lollipop. I have noticed its kinda laggy (despite all the horsepower). Is this normal for the phone or is it a 5.0.1 problem. For those of you on KitKat, should I downgrade? I don't know what the Edge acts like on 4.4.4
Are there any features you lost by going from 4.4.4 to 5.0 I only know of the camera button being on the window instead of edge screen.
Also the low light camera still sucks lol. My Note 2 took better low light pics. And can you only have 4 edge panels in order for music apps to use the edge panel? When i add more panels, Power amp stops showing up.
And yes I did do factory reset
Good thing to do a reset if there are problems.
I'm on 5.0.1 and had kitkat some days ago. IMO lollipop is faster and smoother than kitkat. And new fresh design if you like it. Battery seems pretty much the same for me.
Haven't had any problems yet of any kind.
My note 3 on 5.0 is another story though..

Have you noticed the low app resolution problems? And is there a way to keep facebook notifications just to the EDge screen. It shows up on both Edge screen and above my apps. Distracting imo. I have an Edge screen, keep your bullcrap to the edge and out of my way
On facebook I noticed some wrong resolution on a like button, but that's all I've seen.
Regarding notifications I'm now trying to turn on notifications at top only in: Settings, Sound and Notifications, App notifications. In there I can press each app and decide how I want the notification. Will report back if it works.

Yes that did the trick! Now notifications only comes on the edge and on the top of the notification bar as it did on kitkat.

Must add that notifications still comes on the lock screen. Not bothering me.

Hmm to me it just seems like facebook text and overall UI is too big for such a high res screen.
And I didn't know you could only keep facebook notifications just on the Edge screen. Mines, showed up on both Edge and up top blocking a little bit of my view. I just want it on the Edge and in notifications (hidden) like 4.4.4.
I went back to 4.4.4 but I do miss the look of 5.0.1. It definitely looked better than 4.4.4 but it seems that the Edge Screen works better in 4.4.4 mode. How has your Lollipop experience been. I do like that UI just not how it butchers the Edge Screen. I may go back but I don't like having to reinstall all my apps and redoing my settings. I would use Google auto restore but it tends to reinstall all the apps I ever downloaded for android and I feel like that makes my phone slower? Is there a program that will let me back up my apps and settings and restore than without more lag on a different flavor of Android?
Staying with stock T Mobile Rom for now till Winter when I'll have more time to tweak. Also any battery life tips would help
I'm one of those few that are 99 % satisfied with lollipop actually. Definitely snappier and smoother. I also like the UI better than kitkat. Android really got a facelift this time, and I guess it will be even better as the bug fixes show up like they always do.
I haven't been bothered with notifications on the main screen while I'm in other apps after I tweaked app settings a little, at least not yet. Very satisfied with 5.0.1 on my edge.
It's a little different story on my Note 3 though. It runs 5.0 and I had to flash it twice in order to get WiFi to remember passwords and autoconnect. It also occasionally won't boot past the splash screen. Must reboot it otherwise it just hangs there forever.
Regarding battery life I have no issues at all. Pretty much the same on lollipop as it was on kitkat. Now I'm on 43 % left with phone running for 15 hrs and screen on time is more than 3 hrs. I usually get around 6 hrs screen on time and phone on around 18-20 hrs on one charge.
My note 3 is a beast with lollipop as far as battery goes. 2 hrs screen on time and phone been running for ca 20 hrs with 85 % left. I have absolutely no clue how it can be like this. I'm completely stunned! It has a brand new battery, but still.. I've noticed that the battery drains almost nothing when not in use. But there was one night it lost almost 20 % with Google play services eating most of it. It happened once, and stopped when I rebooted it.
So any advise on battery must be to check what's eating it, and from my experience a reboot often reduces some of the processes running. It can be a bug when that sort of things happen. I would really think so, and that it hopefully will be fixed with a update. It usually does.
I remember 4.2.2. It was extremely battery friendly with draining my i9305 only 0.5 % per hour. Then 4.3 came and turned things upside down..
Sent fra min SM-N915FY via Tapatalk
What app can I use to check the battery usage. I get a little above 3 hours of screen time with stock ROM and power saver active. But this doesn't include playing games. I'd imagine my phone would drain even faster. I really don't think the phone has solid battery performance especially when I still barely get above 3 hours of screen time with mid bright setting and power saver.
And yeah I may go back to Lollipop because of the face lift but the Edge functionality on 4.4.4 is really really good.
Better battery stats is the best I think. But most of its functions requires root. It let's you monitor cpu stats without root.
Otherwise I think the inbuilt battery information let's you see a great deal of what's going on.
3 hrs screen on time wasn't much, is that one days use? You should at least expect 5 hrs I believe. How is your WiFi and mobile signal? Is it strong? Otherwise it will eat battery.

I got about 4 and half screen time on Kit Kat with little wifi use today. I also didn't play any games. I have Metro PCS riding on T Mobile. I tend to have LTE at all times in Dallas...except for when I am in some buildings.
4.5 is ok, but still you should be able to squeeze out more of it. Are your phone going into deep sleep? Better battery stats let's you check that.

Rooted or non rooted? And is rooting hard/risky for this phone? It seems Samsung with each note, cracks down on customizable ROMs
I'm rooted on my note 3, but not on this one. There is cf auto root for kitkat but not lollipop as far as I see.
I don't see a big point rooting this phone other than installing ad away. Many of the reasons I've rooted older phones doesn't exist on the note edge imo. Maybe so I can skip tracks with volume buttons.
Yank kernel with touchwake would have been nice, too bad he has given up Samsung..

Wait why dont you see a need to root Note Edge, and are you on a custom ROM?
I think as we all know Nova Launcher just doesn't play well with the Edge screen. I like having my Edge screen available to me at all times. Its why i bought the phone but with Nova, it blacks it out.
Is there any app that will let me have a scrollable background?

Back in the old days I found myself rooting so I could overclock the cpu and maybe the gpu. With a two core cpu spinning at maximum 1.2 ghz it was my main reason too root. And to install ad away and remap my buttons. But overclocking was my nr. 1 reason.
With this device there is no need to overclock imo. It really is superb as it is.
I can understand your thoughts regarding nova launcher. It disables some of the edge function. But I am used to Mac on the computer side, and with nova my edge acts like the dock on my Mac in hide mode. It is there when I need it.
So for me, nova works as I would like it to. Therefore I use nova not touchwiz home.
Don't know of a launcher that will keep your edge screen like it is in touchwiz, but I'll keep my eyes open.
I'm by the way non rooted on stock everything. Nothing custom on my edge.

Yeah for me, I only rooted to get smoother peformance or better battery life. I have a lot to learn in terms of squeezing more out of my edge. Between life, work, school got not time for now.
I did find an app called landscape wall paper. It does let me have scrollable background which really was the only reason I ever used Nova. I like TW at 4.4.4 because of how it takes advantage of everything EDge related. The whole reason why I bought the phone. So problems done for now. Just need to find ways to get more life out of my battery on stock 4.4.4 ROM. I am slowly getting used to not having the 5.0 face lift.
I do think its dumb and asinine why Samsung has not allowed TW to be put in landscape mode. Or integrate scrollable backrounds. Power users get shafted everyway because of casuals

Galaxy s7 (Exynos Dual sim - 930fd) root and rom recommendation

I switched from a Lenovo z2 plus to a galaxy s7. The switch has been a mixed bag till now.. i enjoy the camera to the core and the amoled screen..wow.. the main thing that is bugging me is the battery life i does not even last a full day and im not even using it heavily. the z2 plus used to give me a 1.5 days life on medium usage(official lineageos 16).
Could someone point me to the best rom out there(i dont mind the version) in terms of battery life.. i dont mind taking a hit on the performance.
I'm happy with the battery life and the overall experience on unofficial LOS16, but you lose all the stock Samsung apps and camera. The thread seems to be a rather mixed bag of issues and bugs, but it's largely been flawless for me.

is there any rom that allows me to keep the camera performance intact but get battery ?
imo the GCam ports quality is on par with stock, but they're rather unstable and tend to freeze and crash.
Otherwise I haven't used any Samsung based ROMs since Nougat, so I can't say myself which are best for battery.
There are many other ROMs to choose from just check the development section of the Samsung S7 thread.

Could someone please point me to a custom kernel for exynos dual sim s7 running on stock oreo..
And also how to install that kernel..

Rooting 3a - Doesn't seem worth it

Owned a OnePlus X - I rooted that phone because the manufacturer stopped making updates for it.
Owned a Pixel 1 - I rooted that one, and a while it was nice, it was annoying having to manually update once a month.
Does anyone else think it's not worth rooting just because it's of how much support Google already gives on its lineup of phones? I also checked the ROMs section of XDA, and there doesn't appear to be very many ROMs for this device anyway.
What do you guys think? I'm a big advocate for rooting, but only when the good outweighs the bad. Right? What do you personally use root access for?
You don't need to root to have a custom rom running. You just need a unlock bootloader and TWRP to flash roms, root is optional.

This is true, but you still don't get OTA updates. Doesn't change anything I wrote above. But what you said is accurate, and I'm glad you pointed it out. Because some people may not know the difference between rooting and simply unlocking your bootloader.
I use J4N's Pixel edge mod. Now when I squeeze my phone, the flashlight comes on instead of the default action. I also use smali patcher to keep my location private to all apps. Don't need permanent root, but I use ElementalX app and flash the kernel Flar2 makes for our device also.
Due to rooting, I don't take updates immediately. I usually take them when big changes or fixes are done, like the recent updates to Vulkan on our phone.
For example, I ran Sept update until mid Dec when I flashed Dec update and the recent ElementalX 3.11 kernel. (Sept was A11 launch and either Nov or Dec had some Vulkan API updates)

This is actually really good to know. Seems like a lot of the OT updates that Google pushes out are just simple security or patches.
Question about ElementalX. I installed a custom kernel on an older phone of mine, a lot of people raved about how great it was. From my experiences, however, it seemed like just a placebo effect. Do you actually notice anything with ElementalX? Hope that doesn't come off rude or anything.

I understand the weariness. I use EX due to the wakelock blocker and the minor fixes to optimize the kernel does make a slight difference in idle battery life. Overnight I only lose 1% battery on EX compared to 5-6% on stock. I don't notice any battery savings during use though compared to stock.
Edit: with EXKM app and EX kernel, you can get sensor readings also. I always have my CPU temp in my notification panel for quick access to it. I beta test a game and give feedback on how much their optimizations have improved. Like last iteration of the beta, my phone was reaching 52°C compared to the live app nearly overheating my phone at 67°C. All with a quick pull down of my notification tray.
Obviously that is a very minor and unique use case.
Edit 2: one other magisk module I forgot to say I use is AccA. Which is a battery charging module. I have it set to stop charging my phone at 81% and shut off my phone at 30% if discharging. I keep my battery at those levels to help prolong it's life as usually over 80% drastically shortens the battery life of your phone. Whether that's proven with this phone is yet to be seen. I personally haven't seen battery degradation in the 18 months I've had the phone so far.

It seems like you've paid a lot of attention to it, and it sounds like having a custom kernel is effective enhancing the battery. I'm not sure if the average person would notice it though unless they were really paying attention to it. As someone who doesn't care that much about kernels, I don't see much of a benefit to rooting other than maybe AdAway and that Pixel Edge mod (that does se pretty cool).
The only thing I have ever used root for has been for Substratum. Now that some ROMs have custom theming options, I find root itself to be an added headache not worth the hassle. I would really love to test out ElementalX, but there is no straight boot.img install option, and I can't justify rooting just to install it.
