If you want Android O speak out until it's too late! - Huawei P9 Guides, News, & Discussion

We know how shady Huawei can be about updates especially after they did not update P8 to newer version with some dumb excuse! We paid premium price for our phones! So if you want a chance to see the Android O on your device - speak out. Send them feedback mail from HiCare app. Tweet them. Post to their Facebook Page - HuaweiMobile! I will be very unhappy if my phone doesn't get the new version, especially since they didn't bother to push 7.1.1 where the shortcuts are available and some other improvements... I love this phone, but the day they announce it's not getting O I will put it for sale and NEVER EVER buy Huawei phone again.

That does nothing. The supporters on theire FB, twitter or whatever don't care about O or anything else. At the moment they prepare an emui 5.0.1 update that got leaked on Honor 8, that should arrive here soon.
Some medias say emui 5.1 arrives in november?
I dont know, but can only say, O will arrive through AOSP, means Lineage base will hit then and hope it does well then.

Most people like me are regular users and don't give a duck about custom roms. We just don't have the time and don't want to deal with it... So people like me should blast them all over the place, so we don't get only the EMUI updates, that pretty much is the same as the previous one... I don't give a duck about EMUI I can put another launcher and make my phone look the way I want... OS version is another things, always brings big improvements.
And "supporters" most of the time don't even know why they should get updates (android users) they just use what they give them.. But at least here "the more techy" ones should ask for what they have paid for... And for the price of P9 people deserve 2 OS versions, not ONE... Like other OEM are doing. Huawei is bragging how many phones they have sold, but why not take a look how many phones they sold are still supported... This OEM is complete trash, and if people remain silent, it will stay this way forever..

It useless without working stock camera app.

For what it's worth I asked on their FB page and this was the reply today:
"thank you very much for choosing HUAWEI. Currerntly no official information about a specific release date has been provided to us.
Feel free to ask further questions reg. technical issues.
Best wishes
Frank from HUAWEI Mobile"

Oreo is officially rolling out to Pixel! Now is the time to raise your voice and claim what you deserve - P9 running Oreo!

It's funny how you speak for everyone... I need the new version with the Icon shortcuts and no need to install another launcher to get them... I need Android O for all the new things... If you don't it's OK but don't speak for everyone else

Speak out?
To the author of the topic, with no offense but I have a strange feeling that you are not adult for long enough to know what are you expecting.
Speak out because you paid premium price? Well.. that has made my day.
Not that I am a person which will always obey whatever they say, but your speaking out through Facebook/Twitter and etc is a beatiful example of the generation which does believe, that it does make a difference.
Let's just check several things:
a) older models with were much more premium than P9 did not receive updates
b) Huawei never announced that they would even consider upgrading P9 to newest Android
c) Android/Google does not care, because they do provide clean pack to manufacturers and responsibility goes to the manufacturer
d) if you did receive phone by network provider, even if Huwaei would generate a stock update, they would provide it to the network operator and operator would decide if they would like to spend resources to upgrade "old customers"
e) Facebook/Twitter is not even operated directly by Huawei. Normally those are 3rd party companies which provides "PR/marketing online customer services" and you can even post 1000 times that you hate your phone and the only thing someone from a low level area of managers will see, will be a small .% on the excel report from 3rd party company which gives a heat map about the current overall score about Huawei compared to other brands
Good luck!
if you do like to have a newer firmware, you are in a right place. XDA. Custom ROMs or a new handset.
Welcome to 21st century for reasonable people which do think logically and don't have to post on Facebook that they have just had a burger in McDonalds.

Android 4.4 KitKat

Google announced today that the successor to the Android "Jelly Bean" OS will be named Android 4.4 "KitKat" instead of the highly anticipated and rumored Android 5.0 "Key Lime Pie" OS. As of the initial announcement today, no "real" information or details have been released to the public. Over the coming weeks, many rumors and supposed "leaks" will indeed pop up regarding Google's new "Kit Kat."

What are your thoughts?
I think kitkat sucks for a name honestly.
Excited for the OS tho.
Everyone did a great job keeping the name secret. Pretty hard to keep things private these days.

This will "cheapen" Android to the point where I will go back to WinMo if the next version is not generic.

Good luck with that switch to an inferior OS with no app development. Let me know how that goes for you.
I don't think it'll cheapen the os. I think its gonna being in revenue for both of them. Selling out would be like giving the os to one OEM and doing like apple.

No money exchanged hands for this partnership, it's just 2 companies working together to help promote each other. I think it's great.

Yep, I thought it was a revenue-generating deal at first. Then I read a few articles and I learned otherwise. I think it's a great thing for both companies. I just think the name is a little "off," if you will...
Especially from a company named Google
SO??
Google is a marketing company, not a software company. That's all,
I would be so damn happy if this version of Android were to be released for our beloved GS3 (as in, Samsung making the all-mighty "hail mary pass," and skipping the previous versions up to this one), however seeing as how we have yet to even receive Android 4.2.2, a year old release might I add, I have a feeling we will be left out in the cold yet again. And of course this is just my luck; started into Android with the Droid 2 Global and got shafted in terms of updates, moved up the Droid Bionic and yet again got shafted with regards to updates, and here we are with Samsung.
Edit: After reading some more into KitKat and finding the motto of 4.4, "to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody," a little of my hope has been restored.

I guess its time to flush this mobile in toilet.
It was a nice sad story with Xiaomi and i wish this company will learn about valuable customers.
I still have faith in Xiaomi if they changed themselves.

That was expected. But still noone gives a valid explanation why same hardwarre, different screen size phone will get android 7 and not RN4 prime. The whole situation is a joke.

One possible explanation is that probably markw isn't actually a xiaomi's in-house product and they dumping it because ODM is failing to/not interested in/refusing to provide xiaomi with updated kernel/blobs. "It's too complex" explanation is too childish to be heard from technology corporation.

Not only childish but insulting too.You can't dump a phone you sell as prime/pro and people paid signifficant more money not only for better hardware but better support too. After mi2s and R4P i think i'm done with xiaomi. On top of that, it seems the new Redmi's have smaller batteries so i can't find a good reason to trust xiaomi for my next phone.

Yeah, their updated product line is pure disappointment. Bigger screens, smaller batteries, same SoCs. Meh.

Are they going to replace our markws with this at no price and will take legal obligations to provide base system updates for at least two major versions? No? Then thanks, but no, thanks. Personally, I'll keep using mine till noticeable battery degradation. Then I'll switch to other vendor.

Yeah 636, the new holy grail for two more years i guess. So basically 10-15% performance bump, unknown support policy, significant smaller battery and no medium size screen.Oh right...maybe they'll make a prime version with sd 660, after 6-8 months of the first R5 release, wich will come with android 7 and stay with 7 just a few months before the R6 release.Nope...

Xiaomi constantly ignores requests on their own forum, what makes you think this petition would be noticed? I would rather suggest mass recruitment requests for beta-testing Oreo (who needs Nougat, anyway?) in a (very little) hope these requests are processed by officials (unlike forum requests that are moderated by usual users, mods there aren't xiaomi employees, afaik) and there will be some kind of output.

Danish news media today cited a Huawei source saying that the P9 will be updated to Android Oreo 8.0: https://m.weibo.cn/status/FFJfa03uP
Looks more like chinese than danish. Not sure what to believe now.
I can't read chinese, but i really want Oreo on my P9, even if it's the last i get before buying a new phone.

Another negative person.... you know everything i assume??? Do you have a source spying on the company im working for??? Dear Negative person. Now I am allowed to say that i already have in my hands an unpublished Pre-beta test Oreo version on my phone since i have a part i develop for the firmware in the country i live for. For a better and stable support for the mobile companies here and customize few things.
Dear negative person this forum was the beginning for many of us recognized or not developers to find a hobby that potentially could lead in a job. I am a good example my self. So i personally demand a bit of respect from users who are interested on customizing their mobile devices, but they do not have enough of knowledge or and experience. All these years (and that's my 3rd newest active account because i like to keep my developing clean so i can manage my requests) until i expand my knowledge i was reading and asking. Lots of questions, lots of annoyance towards other devs. I would suggest you to do the same if you are interested on developing so you will not have to wait for any Huawei to give you the experience you want on your device. Internet is a free exchange of ideas in the end of the day and that idea me and all of my generation fought so you will enjoy your right to share your opinions throughout the web.....but... Idea is not spreading inaccurate misinformation. Thats literally a crime and its punishable. I am telling you off for many reasons and because i am concerned especially with P9 since i am leading a dev project. P9 is an essential device with great characteristics that can compete all the devices in the market right now you like it or not, you admit it or not. Its underdeveloped yes. I agree! Like the rest of the mobile phones out there. The main reason is that you can not be a pioneer with the same speed as 15 years ago, since the technology moved fast and forward the last 15 years with no space for new ideas and pioneering. And then... financially crisis hits all over the world... Android is not an Iphone. Its not Apple. Android is FREE and once you have a free thing you have to pay for laws to be able to give it for free like the companies who dont give their operating systems for free. No android mobile company earns $$ from the operating system. Its is against the law to do it. All of the companies i worked in my past like Nokia, Sony, Google, etc etc are making their profits from the devices. in other words RETAIL SALES.
So now you can stop spreading your hate because you are disappointed from your device and rethink. Every action have a reaction. Thats the basic rule of engineering i learned in school. And its true that this law applies to real life.
Now back to the subject and to answer clearly your stupid comment so you will not mislead opinions.
You can not have Emui 8 without Oreo and vice versa. Its not just an APK based app. its a new customized framework which needs environment and code for Oreo to work. For an example you can not install Emui camera from any version to a google vanilla firmware and make it work without changing and codding things and support through kernel and OS the application. If the application needs Oreo based system simply it will crash and it will not work as it should. Thats all i have to say.
I hope you enjoy my way of talking.
PS: Its a phone and not a rocket yes? It does what they promised you it will do. Be glad and wait or move on to a "better supported device".
If you have demands of buying a new phone because the market is trying to grab more money out of your pockets by providing a new OS...then guess what.... you are a retail sales victim.

You can not call me an insider. I met through this forum many people and many devs who was working in much more famous mobile companies. Hell yes we even had official programmers for Microsoft, Sony, Samsung. XDA gave loads of knowledge to this industry. As for the beta test i will say Soon i assume the first version you could try in few weeks is the Chinese one since most of the complete parts are coming for porting and translating here. Which means whenever permissions will be allowed and made for public beta test. Unfortunately as for now is strictly for internal development purposes. I will repeat Its not "insiders". It is a part of our job to provide the best experience for our country. Finland is famous for many companies like Nokia (clearly Finnish company that creates from tires for cars, to space engineering technologies, lasers and back in time even mattresses ), Huawei EU departments (responsible for development and marketing around EU and passing to other companies for additional changes), Rovio (Angry birds ) etc etc and many other companies in general.

Hi, and what about rollback from Oreo to Nougat? It would be logical if rollback will be released earlier than Oreo-beta ?you agree with me?

Well obviously if not released at the same time. It will be i assume the same way when Nougat beta started.

Prey ahahaha
Nuh the beta goes for devs who know how to make an assessment, report etc etc. I wouldn't touch a beta if I wasn't sure of what I'm doing. Also its rare to release such files that will caused bootloop. Crashing yeap i get it very often but its too early to tell you anything more. With the files i have i dont get bootloop. There are issues with battery and overheating but thats all so far. But yeap to clarify... so far no issues of rolling back as well since I'm doing it daily

With love and respect

I'm not talking about myself, I can perfectly rebranding and flash any firmware, but nevertheless thanks for the answer, and ... welcome Oreo.
Cool stuff, i hope they take their time and release a bug free version. So glad i bought this device nearly two years ago and its still a very good smartphone that can even compete with more recent ones.

Having a moan at Huawei

Just spotted this article on xda and it just made me feel numb about this phone.
https://www.xda-developers.com/andr...-g-2015-sony-xperia-z3-compact-htc-10-one-m8/
The HTC M8 and HTC 10 just got Android 10!!
I've bought bogey phones before that I didn't like, the z1, note 4, Evo 3D, and I made do with what was available which want a lot, but the p20 pro takes top prize for the saga that is the bootloader codes and the anti Dev scene that is there p20 pro section of xda.
I got my bootloader unlock code day one, then I didn't write it down (my mistake) then I flashed a service firmware and it relocked, Huawei won't give me my original code. They didn't understand that they had already given me it?? Just needed to resend the same one lol. So crap.
Being used to HTC, OnePlus and Nexus devices, even Sammy, they all had thriving communities, and even though the pro is a beast with all the right hardware and components to develop for, Huawei just makes everything hard, borderline impossible in certain circumstances.
They've now made their own file system and compiler.
Compilers called ark I think, not sure what this will mean for after market development but it probably won't be good.
After hearing of a sort of partnership between xda and Huawei, I kind of committed with that in mind and the reviews I'd read about the camera (all I wanted was OIS really)
Camera is brilliant, just didn't expect the crap that happened afterwards.
Sorry for the moan, I am getting old
Would you buy another Huawei knowing how impossible it'll be to root and install your favourite custom ROM?
Personally I wouldn't, the ads are unblockable pretty much, removing device bloat is a ballache and updates are so splintered between the plethora of models Huawei decided to make some people are still on Oreo?
Such a shame, the device has a tonne of potential, ruined by a company that doesn't understand the essence of Android.
Ah well, OnePlus from here on in.
Blame Trump for putting pressure with the Android crap. Google is slowly removing safetynet on many huawei phones so pretty much we can't do anything.
P20 pro is a great device but bad managed by the software itself. I never had ads on my phone and, i agree, it's sad to see that Huawei had to lock almost everything just to prove that they are not a insecure company.
**** Trump, period.

You have ads on websites though, no avoiding that besides the likes of adclear which uses a VPN and murders the battery.
Trump just wanted to tap them for some money.
The bootloader codes were before him banning them.

I mean, the ads can be removed by using Brave browser, since it is the same as Chrome but has adblocking.
The bootloader code fiasco happened because of 2 reasons :
1.Huawei was getting smack because of the xda noobs bricking their phones and then complaining how their phones are crap
2.Trump because he kept putting pressure on Huawei after the mate 10 fiasco.

I think the bootloader is much deeper rooted than that..
The volume of broken phones is just not high enough.. I think they hit a target of expected sales and then decided it was enough to take the hit..
Neither of us could be 100% it's speculation.
Either way, it's a sh*tshow and they can whistle if they think they'll get a penny from me again.
HTC have been doing the same thing for years with one blip when they had the one X.
@dladz
For me it's not HUAWEI's fault if you were stupid for not noticing your code.

Don't be a cry-baby. if you want customization, go for OnePlus. I bought P20 Pro because of the Leica Optics, and I enjoyed the camera a lot. And I don't mind having Android 10 early or late. Pie is still decent and recent enough to use as daily driver.

Not enough
Enter the private DNS section in the phone settings and add "dns.adguard.com" and you're ad-free. No app needed with Android 9.
Slow updates is and will always be an issue, but as long as we get our security patches, we should be fine. I was a heavy modification user back then too, but switching to Huawei I did not even tried to unlock my bootloader. Sure you miss some freedom and control over your device, for which you paid hundreds of euros, but for the future it's the user's choice, which phone to select when buying a new phone. Google Pixel oder OnePlus is much more user friendly I guess and should be considered over Huawei, if you want to modificate your device. With the latest disagreements with Trumps China politics, maybe Huawei will create an open source alternative with more control for the user.
Id just love regular updates. I know EE are to blame too but it took from January to June for the .168 update.
We've now had nothing for 2 months.
My first and last Huawei.

I agree with most of what you said, even those dooshes approx 1k miles to the east of China have in place an option to bootloader unlock( none of the code bull****) unless one buys an American version of their devices (Samsoog ).
WhyWowee emui is pretty ****e., Now with their global locked bootloader policy one is limited to their weak app gallery or theme store for customisation since development is now dead on here. Even the Huawei forums on here are a ghost town.
In regards to ads, I don't get ads using Samsung browser and adblock. Maybe you should try that.

Blame the annoying orange for going full crybaby and blame Huawei for the security risks that weren't proven yet. They locked their bootloader for security purposes and yet they are still blocked. Thanks US!

Android 10 got cancelled?

Hello,
today morning I saw this on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/com...e_to/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I don't know if it's true or not, but I wanted to share it ?
I posted this also in the Global Telegram group, but I got banned I don't know why, but it doesn't matter ?
Edt: Here's the direct link to MiCommunity: https://c.mi.com/thread-2830599-1-0.html?utm_source=share&utm_medium=twitter
The phone launched with Oreo (and it's an Android one phone)
They must update to Android 10 like the A2 (must get at least 3 years of security updates) the A2 lite launched the same day as the A2
U can be calm about it and don't believe the chat support?
I personally dont care what call center says. But if its true Xiaomi will lose our and Google's respect. That means they will join Huawei ban caravan. Another reason for Xiaomi ban. Xiaomi doesnt want ban, arent you Xiaomi?
Usual clueless support staff. I'm sure we'll get the update... probably after A3, so march (...?)
If you look at the screenshot, "Xiaomi support dude" is saying that Mi A2 will get Android 10 within this week (written at 22 Jan 2020). I might be mistaken but, considering that Mi A2 got the update about two weeks ago, we can conclude that Xiaomi support dudes know nothing at all lol.
Time to go custom rom if this is true.
C'mon guys. I know we're all tired of waiting but we all should know by now that Xiaomi support has no more information than we have.
We will get the 10 update either way we don't know when
The guy is clearly clueless. Speaking to Xiaomi reps on chat is like trying to measure both position and speed of a subatomic particle: The indetermination principle forbids you from gathering all the relevant information at once .
The A2 Android 10 update got pulled out last week, since it was less than half baked, and it was causing a plethora of different issues. It should be resuming now. This obviously impacts us, since the small number of developers Xiaomi devotes to the A1 program can barely deal with the issues of cooking a ROM for one device at the time. On top of that, most of the Xiaomi guys on chat don't even have a clue of the difference between MIUI and Android One.
So let's all calm down here, and wait until they consider the A2 issues solved. I for one know I won't be Guinea pigging for Xiaomi, and will surely wait a couple of weeks after they release the A10 OTA to update my device.

No, it's actually really good that someone is writing about it. If nothing, it will get some views and might grab attention of some bigger media causing bigger impact. It's a shame that you can get Q up and running from community members that don't get anything from it and do it in their free time but the manufacturer fails to do so. Community ROMs might not be perfect, but stock is neither.

In theory, yes, but Google also agreed it's up to the manufacturers, so, if they behave like they did with other devices in the past, they might not bring an update to Android 10, only giving security patches.

Not in a theory. Xiaomi signed agreement.
Xiaomi have no excuse!
The agreement is to provide monthly updates for at least 3 years.
Can't find anywhere that they are obligated to upgrade two Android versions.
