Can I permanently disable Google Assistant but keep "OK Google"? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I just suggested that a friend purchase a Pixel to replace his old iPhone.
While he likes the Pixel so far, his battery life is ridiculously horrible with almost no apps loaded yet.
I figure that the Assistant is a big battery drainer, constantly looking at location and other activities and always processing a bit of data in the background. He likes the "OK Google" feature, but he doesn't need the Google Assistant and will want to keep his data consumption down.
Is there a way to permanently disable the "Google Assistant" feature without having the Google Assistant pop-up nag every time he does a search? His phone isn't rooted (yet), though we probably will if he decides to keep it.
Thanks,
¿GJ?

Don't know, however Google Assistant is not the culprit there has to be something else.

I no expert but I think "Google Assistant" is "OK, Google." I believe you're talking about disabling "Google Now with it's cards and notifications. It's the program that you get when you swipe from the left on your home screen.
Well, I tried to post and the verification nonsense stopped me for awhile. Then I was told I couldn't post the link to the instructions on how to disable Google Now. How helpful.
Search "Disable Google Now" Now, I'm off to deal with the verification nonsense again.

Remove Google assistance completely
I am using moto xt1762 woods. I just deleted default system google apk and replaced it with playstore google apk. The following steps worked for me.Not sure for others. Now i am not getting even pop up of assistance.
1 Rooted mobile with magisk and gave root permissions to es file explorer
2 From es file explorer >device>system>private_apps> ,deleted Velvet.apk
3 Now installed google app from playstore and took backcup and renamed as Velvet.apk and moved to the system>private_apps
4 If it still appears after rebooting, just delete velvet.apk from system files and restart. Google apk wont be there
but still works fine.

Google Talk disappeared?

Well the other day my Google talk app stopped opening, no FC, but when I clicked the icon the screen would go blank for a split second, then back to my homescreen. So used TI to clear data, same thing, so I then uninstalled and rebooted. I went to the market to dl it again, but it's not there. I then went to android.com/market on my comp and was also unable to find it on there.
I'm sure I could located the latest GTalk.apk, but was curious if anyone else is experiencing behavior like this?
Google Talk has never been available through the market, Only Google Voice. I think, I remember looking for Google Talk when I first got my Sensation back in July and it didn't show up in the Market.

[Q] "OK Google" No Longer Working

The stats first,
HTC Rezound
Rooted
Infection 2.5
I last used Google Now on my way home from work on Tuesday. Normally, I would open Google Now. Then, when I say "OK Google" it would respond, and I could do what needed to be done. However, this morning, on the way into the office, no go. I can open Google Now, but the "OK Google" command does not work.
I checked the setting in Google Now, and Hot Word detection is set to On. Also, the microphone icon in the search bar on the Google Now screen is white. ( I learned this means that OK Google key word is active)
The only thing I have changed since then is updated applications as they become available. The only Google app I recall updating since Tuesday was Google+, but there might have been other Google apps, and I know I updated several other applications.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

"OK Google" Working on Nexus 4 With Screen Off (Glitch)

I'm not a dev, but I thought this might be interesting for devs to know. For a few weeks I had "OK Google" working on my Nexus 4 with the screen off. I had an old version of the Google app installed, then updated via a flashable zip through Team Blackouts app. The filename is BlackGoogleApp-4.2.16.87075793-KK.zip. I'm sure I can upload the actual zip if need be. The procedure I used was to delete the apk, reboot and flash the zip in recovery. Soon after I discovered by accident that "OK Google" now worked even when the screen was off. The screen actually was off, not just darkened. It didn't respond to touch, and I detected no light coming from it in a darkened room. Here are some things of note:
I'm running KitKat with Francos last kernel made for it.
"OK Google" everywhere didn't always work, whether the screen was on or off. In order to get it working again I'd have to bring up the list of recent apps and swipe away one or more instances of Google App.
As you might expect, battery life took a beating. I was charging 2-3 times a day.
I'm running stock 4.4.4 with Xposed Framework. I don't have any modules installed directly related to Google App.
I use AutoVoice, for what it's worth.
I didn't even think this was possible outside of Moto X, but I can assure you it was working on my phone. I updated Google App to 4.6.10.19 via Team Blackouts app, this time without deleting the old apk, and "OK Google" no longer works with the screen off, and my battery life has improved. I did perform a nandroid backup before I updated, however, so it would be possible to go back and test something when I have the time.
It was pretty nice having "OK Google" working with the screen off, but the hit on battery life made it impractical. Also, "OK Google" sometimes not working until I swiped away instances of Google App was a minor nuisance. If this could toggled on and off, however, and "OK Google" could always work consistently I'd go back to it in a heartbeat. Any questions, let me know.

Google Play Services Issues (Google Pixel 2)

I set up my Pixel 2 yesterday and noticed that whenever I try to access a search within "Settings" I get a "Google Play Services has stopped working." Nothing seems to fix it. I've tried 1) uninstalling updates to restore back to factor installed version but get a "Uninstall unsuccessful" message and 2) Trying to uninstall Google Play Services in hopes of reinstalling. It takes me to Play store with instructions that I need to "deactivate" before uninstalling but the deactivate button doesn't work. I also tried emptying the cache but that did nothing too. Is this a known issue with Play Services and is there something else to try?
You could try a factory reset. If that doesn't work, call google support.
I did a factory reset and now it works most of the time. It seems like it may also be affected when "developer options" is enabled...I like to disable animations to make Android feel snappier.

[help] Yet another thread about GMS in P40 pro

Happy New Year everyone!
So I have a P40 pro with GMS installed since ver.121 but currently on EMUI 11 (.151).
After the EMUI11 the phone started acting a bit weird, so I suppose that something is not right with GMS.
Currently having gsf frozen and I am getting notifications normally ( I only unfreeze every now and then to update apps in playstore), but my BIG problem now is that google maps has stopped working as it should; whenever I input an address and press Start to commence navigation, it goes to the navigation screen and immediately goes back to route overview. This only happens in Gmaps, Waze works normally, however I am using google maps every day so i need that fixed. Tried to wipe cache but no dice.
If GSF is not frozen, whenever I try to open Gmaps it goes to its homescreen for a split second and then crashes.
My main question is, is there any way to try and "fix" GMS by doing only some of the steps in current methods, without having to start from scratch and factory reset my phone? I really cannot go this path again and considering that the above problem aside, it looks like the phone is still usable (google account in place), so are there any safe steps to follow without messing up GMS more than what it is? Could I follow let's say the last 2-3 steps of the guides out there, i.e. clearing cache and uninstalling/installing play services and gsf (without downgrading)??
Is downgrade a must only to enter your google account, or also for doing all the steps?
TIA,
Thanos

im on emui 11, i already had googlifyer installed pre the upgrade and that worked for me to fix the play protect messages - but he also mentions the google maps crash issue.
It does not let me install the play services apks of the link. Although I have play services uninstalled from the phone, i am getting "installation failed" and reason for failure "you already have a newer version of this app", but I dont have the app installed at the moment.
OK, so that's weird. I noticed that when I was getting the notifications suddenly I could see two play services apks the second one having the second SIM icon on the corner. So I uninstalled this one as well and it let me install the apk. Everything went OK, maps and playstore work BUT I keep getting the play not certified error in notifications bar for the second SIM play services, so for now I just silenced the notification.
Any way how to solve this? Never noticed before that I could get playstore error with a sim no.2 icon and the most weird thing is that now there is only one play services app in apps list, but sporadically I was seeing a second one, hence why it was not letting me install an older version, because even tho I uninstalled the normal one, a second one (same ver) was also somewhere hidden.

That could mean you have microg on or fake store services?

If you get the playstore error you have to repeat the fix process on the maps link, I had to do it a few times to fix it.
The other thing which fixes it is icebox freezing gsf but then maps doesn't work so good as it does access location well.
It seems a choice between notifications and no maps or maps and no notifications...
Uninstall and install Maps few times ... if Maps (last version) continues with errors, try version 10.49.3.

Is that for the crashing issue or the location issue?
When I had any problems with Maps (on P40 pro or Mate40 pro), crash or location, I used 10.49.3.
Later I tried the latest version a few times, until it worked (on both phones).

Initially I installed Gms with the method available back in September, no micro G involved. After that, I was just freezing gsf with multitool 8 via PC whenever I wanted to unfreeze them to update apps in playstore (I cannot stand aurora store, way too slow and too many clicks, I preferred to unfreeze gsf, reboot, update all apps and freeze with multitool).
Maps with frozen gsf were working just fine on me, even without Google location accuracy the GPS fix was immediate.

As described earlier, I was getting the play certified error by a play services app having a SIM 2 icon, similar to the bottom whatsapp app attached, however after I silenced the notification I only see one play services app in my app list and if I go to notifications settings the play services availability notifications are on, so it is like there is a duplicable play services app hidden somehow.
OK, there we go again.. A few minutes ago play services was updating in notification bar and after that I got attached notification for playstore with sim 2 blue icon (again.. ). When I clicked on the notification it got me to a playstore with sim 2 icon, but when I go to home screen and then go to app list there is no such thing as a sim 2 playstore.
Any ideas? What is going on, I have no idea..

Nope, right now gsf is not frozen, I was just keeping it this way to test the errors and functionality before freezing it
What's with the sim icons in Google apps though? Never seen them before until now
I haven't found a way to remove the play protect errors without freezing gsf unfortunately, I'm sure it can be done but it caused me loads of hassle and I ran through the process a ton of times but only a few times did I manged to have it working with no play errors. I think you have to strip it back clean everything out and start fresh but uninstall icebox too... My config is now with gsf frozen and bar the app store everything is working...

I don't have icebox installed. The method I am using to freeze gsf is multitool 8 in Windows.
FOR the time being there are no play protect errors, but will see till tmrw..
