[help] Yet another thread about GMS in P40 pro - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

Happy New Year everyone!
So I have a P40 pro with GMS installed since ver.121 but currently on EMUI 11 (.151).
After the EMUI11 the phone started acting a bit weird, so I suppose that something is not right with GMS.
Currently having gsf frozen and I am getting notifications normally ( I only unfreeze every now and then to update apps in playstore), but my BIG problem now is that google maps has stopped working as it should; whenever I input an address and press Start to commence navigation, it goes to the navigation screen and immediately goes back to route overview. This only happens in Gmaps, Waze works normally, however I am using google maps every day so i need that fixed. Tried to wipe cache but no dice.
If GSF is not frozen, whenever I try to open Gmaps it goes to its homescreen for a split second and then crashes.
My main question is, is there any way to try and "fix" GMS by doing only some of the steps in current methods, without having to start from scratch and factory reset my phone? I really cannot go this path again and considering that the above problem aside, it looks like the phone is still usable (google account in place), so are there any safe steps to follow without messing up GMS more than what it is? Could I follow let's say the last 2-3 steps of the guides out there, i.e. clearing cache and uninstalling/installing play services and gsf (without downgrading)??
Is downgrade a must only to enter your google account, or also for doing all the steps?
TIA,
Thanos

Thanks for the tip!
Will this work in EMUI11 as is, without any downgrade?

im on emui 11, i already had googlifyer installed pre the upgrade and that worked for me to fix the play protect messages - but he also mentions the google maps crash issue.

It does not let me install the play services apks of the link. Although I have play services uninstalled from the phone, i am getting "installation failed" and reason for failure "you already have a newer version of this app", but I dont have the app installed at the moment.

OK, so that's weird. I noticed that when I was getting the notifications suddenly I could see two play services apks the second one having the second SIM icon on the corner. So I uninstalled this one as well and it let me install the apk. Everything went OK, maps and playstore work BUT I keep getting the play not certified error in notifications bar for the second SIM play services, so for now I just silenced the notification.
Any way how to solve this? Never noticed before that I could get playstore error with a sim no.2 icon and the most weird thing is that now there is only one play services app in apps list, but sporadically I was seeing a second one, hence why it was not letting me install an older version, because even tho I uninstalled the normal one, a second one (same ver) was also somewhere hidden.

That could mean you have microg on or fake store services?

If you get the playstore error you have to repeat the fix process on the maps link, I had to do it a few times to fix it.
The other thing which fixes it is icebox freezing gsf but then maps doesn't work so good as it does access location well.
It seems a choice between notifications and no maps or maps and no notifications...

Uninstall and install Maps few times ... if Maps (last version) continues with errors, try version 10.49.3.

Is that for the crashing issue or the location issue?

When I had any problems with Maps (on P40 pro or Mate40 pro), crash or location, I used 10.49.3.
Later I tried the latest version a few times, until it worked (on both phones).

Initially I installed Gms with the method available back in September, no micro G involved. After that, I was just freezing gsf with multitool 8 via PC whenever I wanted to unfreeze them to update apps in playstore (I cannot stand aurora store, way too slow and too many clicks, I preferred to unfreeze gsf, reboot, update all apps and freeze with multitool).
Maps with frozen gsf were working just fine on me, even without Google location accuracy the GPS fix was immediate.

As described earlier, I was getting the play certified error by a play services app having a SIM 2 icon, similar to the bottom whatsapp app attached, however after I silenced the notification I only see one play services app in my app list and if I go to notifications settings the play services availability notifications are on, so it is like there is a duplicable play services app hidden somehow.

OK, there we go again.. A few minutes ago play services was updating in notification bar and after that I got attached notification for playstore with sim 2 blue icon (again.. ). When I clicked on the notification it got me to a playstore with sim 2 icon, but when I go to home screen and then go to app list there is no such thing as a sim 2 playstore.
Any ideas? What is going on, I have no idea..

Nope, right now gsf is not frozen, I was just keeping it this way to test the errors and functionality before freezing it

What's with the sim icons in Google apps though? Never seen them before until now

I haven't found a way to remove the play protect errors without freezing gsf unfortunately, I'm sure it can be done but it caused me loads of hassle and I ran through the process a ton of times but only a few times did I manged to have it working with no play errors. I think you have to strip it back clean everything out and start fresh but uninstall icebox too... My config is now with gsf frozen and bar the app store everything is working...

I don't have icebox installed. The method I am using to freeze gsf is multitool 8 in Windows.
FOR the time being there are no play protect errors, but will see till tmrw..

[Q] Play Store acting weird? (Not showing progress in Notification)

I've been having this problem with the Play Store where it's not displaying the Notifications correctly.
Or rather, that the persistent Notification while an app is being downloaded/updated is not showing any Details. It keeps showing that continuous horizontal scrolling bar thingy as if the download has yet to start, all the way through the actual downloading plus the installing part. No progress, no download size, doesnt even turn to "Installing" after the download is complete. It does show a proper "xy apps Updated" or "xy app Installed" at the end with the proper thumbnail, just nothing While it's downloading.
I can see the progress in the Play store page for the respective app, but the notification keeps on scrolling with no details.
It's most annoying while updating an app, as you know the notification actually shows the size of Just the update while play store just shows the download percentage out of the Whole app.
I can see in the settings page for Play Store that it's the latest version (4.9.13). The phone is Not rooted, I haven't messed with anything that should affect the Play store as far as I know. No third party app store, no proxy etc. It has been doing this since out of the box. (First time I saw this I thought the Play store might be updating first, as often happens after first setup, and that it'll get alright after a restart or something)
Is anyone else experiencing this? Has anyone experienced this some other time? Possible solutions?
Edit 2: Also, what I didn't notice till recently, is that while updating any app via the playstore, the phone downloads the Whole apk every single time. Normal behavior is to download only the updated part of apk, as happens with every other device I use, but since the notifications are not showing any progress, I didn't notice this before.
Strangest part is no one else seems to be reporting this problem, no other threads etc. My only hope is that the new update (Android 5.1) is just round the corner, and hopefully it'll be sorted then.
my one isnt even downloading giving error 489
yes
Yes this happening with me.. We have to give feedback then they will give update
Play store working like charm.. It happened for first time only.. maybe the playstore or its services might be getting updated.
Update: Problem Persists
It's still the same, with latest Play store 5.0.31, and Latest Play services. I believe it's not these apps at fault here. When an update is being downloaded, the download is actually handled by the stock Download Manager app and not the play store itself. This can be checked by long pressing the download notification and going to App Info. So That must be malfunctioning here.
My phone has "Download Manager version 4.4.4-1379542". Can someone who is not facing this problem please confirm what version his phone is using?
Also, clearing this download manager's Defaults doesn't resolve the issue.

Hey,
try installing the new playstore 5.0
first stop existing playstore app, clear data and cache, then remove your registered gmail accounts from settings, reboot and install new apk.
This should definitely solve all playstore related problems.,

Installs taking long time

Recently, as I install an app, I'm finding it to take a long time...several minutes.
I just selected Truecaller from the Play Store to install. It's a small app. It moved from the downloading stage to installing, maybe 5 minutes before I started this thread, and is still in installing mode now. Another interesting thing, it does NOT show it installing in the notifications bar.
I've had this happen with other apps as well.
Anyone else experiencing this?

Try clearing cache and data of the play store, in Settings - Apps. Sometimes it just 'hangs'. Canceling and Install again can fix it too.

Issue running Waze with Android Auto

Initially it was working fine for a while. Now when I hit the maps and navigation arrow on the home screen to select between waze or google maps all I get is a black screen temporarily and then it goes back to the blue Android Auto home screen. So it won't let me make a selection. If I uninstall then reinstall Auto Android and waze it will work until I shut down then the next startup I have the same problem. If I uninstall waze I am able to use google maps again. I have read in other forums that it may be a Huawei issue. Has any one else here experienced this?

I've also read online that many Huawei devices have issues with Android Auto. It might very well be a Huawei problem. But then again Waze for Android Auto was just released and is known to be buggy on other popular devices like the Galaxy S8 and S7.

My one do exactly the same, on top it play no music with google music, song start to play but no audio from the car.
Seems there are big issue with android auto at the moment :crying::crying:
Just an hint, is enoth to remove and reistall android auto, no need to remove waze to make it work again.......
Looks like the latest Android Auto update may have actually fixed the problem. Waze has been working like it's suppose to since the update
I have the same problem. A few days after Waze installation i only get a blank screen. Google maps works perfectly....
The issue can be seen also with an OnePlus 5 on a Mercedes HU.
It is clearly an Waze issue! Freezing Waze (from Titanium Backup) solves the issue. But if you unfreeze Waze and select it again in Android Auto you'll only have a black screen instead of any navigation app in Android Auto.

I had the same problem with the audio got it fixed by downloading an 3rd party App called "Equalizer". Someone said it is related to the system equalizer so its a Huawei/Honor specific issue.

Hi,
I am experiencing exactly the same issue with my Huawei p9
Latest EMUI 5.0.1, Android Auto 3.1.581054-release
Any solution for this beside reinstalling Android Auto or erasing all its data ?
Thanks

No, unfortunately I've never found a solution aside from erasing it's data whenever it happens. I keep hoping that one of the updates will solve the problem but no luck so far.

Google Lens App & Google Assistant App Madness - Please help...

All this nonsense started this morning: I tried to install the Lens stand alone app on my S8, it downloaded and installed. I tried it and it forced close. Then I tried to use Lens in Google Assistant (last time I used it was like a week ago and was working great) but when I clicked the lens icon GA stopped and force closed. I tried again but after another tentative it was not showing anymore the Google Assistant just the sad pop-up "Google keeps closing".
I uninstalled Lens app. This didn't solve the problem.
Then I cleared cache and data of Google App. This didn't solve the problem.
Then I uninstalled Google app and reinstalled it. The first time didn't solve anything, then I did it again (I think I did exactly the same process) and lens was working in Google Assistant. BUT after like 5 minutes I tried to use it (Lens) again and... it forced close Google Assistant!
I had installed the Google Camera App (found in this forum ) that I was using, since I even supposed that could lead to some conflict.
Now I am in this crazy loop . Can anybody suggest some solution?
I am having the same problem. I have tried to find a fix and have had no luck.
My wife has an S8 and she doesn't have this problem! I really really don't want to reset the phone to try to fix this....
I had this problem too.
I fixed it by exit from google beta and restoring the stable release on the play store.
Have you tried to download the latest Google services from Aptoide or something?

Orientation sensor frozen

I'm using a Pixel, still on Android 9, and my orientation sensor (and accelerometer) have suddenly stopped working. However, it appears that it's a software issue as the auto-rotation still works when in Safe Mode. I've uninstalled every app that's been updated in the past two days (roughly when I think this problem began) but it's still a no-go. I've also installed a sensor test app and I find the sensors do work initially on boot, but freeze after 5 seconds or so.
Any ideas of how I might fix this?
Clear system cache.
You update, install or uninstall any apps recently?
I tried clearing the cache but it didn't change anything. I also uninstalled all the apps that had recently updated, restarting the phone each time, but the sensor is still frozen unfortunately.

Factory reset time...
I have the same problem also with Pixel 1 and it happened on the same day (Oct 20)! The difference is I'm on Android 10.
After factory reset and backup restore it works.
After updating all apps, it still works.
After restart once all apps are updated... No work.

Roll back to factory settings, one by one and find the culprit(s). Sounds like a rogue 3rd party app.
Once I have a device running well I almost never update anything. I'll run on the factory loaded versions for years many times. Result, no issues.

Thanks for the help! How do I do this?
The return to factory settings is in the app under settings.
You can try uninstalling it otherwise.
I don't see that option all the time and you may have to hit uninstall for it to appear.
A forced stop might be enough for troubleshooting.
Typically I use my package disabler for things like this.
So I've done a factory reset with no restore (to keep it clean). Updated every app individually and restarted the device each time.
Updated GOOGLE MAPS. Rebooted.
Presto! All sensors are now locking up and battery starts burning away.
Disabled Google Maps, cleared cache + data, and rebooted. Problem did NOT go away. Now I'm doing one more (hopefully last) restore and will disable Google Maps right away.
Wow... did not expect it to be Maps...

I'm not, Gmaps updates are a back street abortion.
So it was the update that trashed it?
I always keep gmail and maps on the factory load version. Invariably updates make them less user friendly on a Samsung
I set Playstore settings for auto updates by wifi only.
I always keep wifi disabled, effectively preventing any auto updating. I also firewall block and disable Playstore unless I need it. It's a background pocket hog.
Updates generally cause more harm than good if the app is already running well...
I have the same issue, and after guessing which app was causing the problem I found out it's the Google app. I disabled it and all the sensors started working back and also automatic brightness. Also I tried leaving the beta updates of the Google app and whenever the Google app is active the sensors stops working. Probably Google trying to kill the pixel 1 or a new function conflicting with the sensors
Oh my god! I have the same issue! Stock Android 10.
Sensors work fine on Safe Mode, but on normal mode they sometimes don't work.
Same problem here, since a couple of days ago, some sensors (gyro, light, accelerometer, compas) stop working after a couple of seconds after reboot. I factory reset my pixel, I tried uninstalling GMaps, I tried deactivating Wifi and Bluetooth,... but nothing is working.
Proximity sensor still work though.

Have you tried disabling Google app as mentioned by cristejeda33 above?
I have the same issues, it happens when one or more apps get updated, don't now which one is causing it exactly, but the issue goes away after the next update, and comes back at the next update and so on ..., features like, adaptive brightness, tap to wake, lift to wake, display rotation os and in camera, youtube video rotation....... stopped working and the battery is draining a lot faster. thinking of getting rid of the good old pixel ..

Try disabling Google play Services... just a wild guess.
It's a dependency or a parent app of Google App that's maybe causing the trouble. These can be hard to ferret out... play with it.
You could just go shotgun and revert all Google apps to factory load version -if- it wasn't a system wide firmware update that triggered it.
I've experienced this too many times, updates break things.
On my N10+ I lock down all updates, especially firmware. I'm rarely updated anything because it causes trouble. Result is a very fast and stable operating platform with minimum maintenance required. When there is an issue it's much easier to track down as the system is a known and familiar quantity. My current load is over a year and a half old... still running strong.
Wife and I are using OG Pixels and a couple of weeks ago we both noticed massive battery degradation. Then we both realized that auto rotate is extremely slow as are a bunch of sensors. Skymap doesn't track anymore. Both our phones also get extremely hot.
Google brought us here and we see that stopping the Google app makes the sensors work normally again. Lots of issues being reported in the playstore for this app also. Would love to hear if anyone has made any headway working around this or are we screwed until an update comes out?
What's the best way we can report this to Google publicly? And put the link here
All accelerometer, compass, gyroscope and proximity sensors turned off a few days ago on my og pixel and after disabling the google app all the sensors are working again.
I had a look on the play store and the last update for the google app was on the 21st October, which is exactly when it broke.
I disabled google maps first, then the google app, then sensors worked, so i re-enabled the maps app, I then cleared the cache on the google app and re-enabled that too, and all is still working.
Thank you very, very much for finding the cause of this, I was about to factory reset the phone and then have to reload everything which may or may not have worked anyway. Your efforts are much appreciated, long may your technology function correctly.
