Please samsung change this in your UI - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I am an old HTC fan and user since the Nexus One 7 years in a row, I barely used another brand in all these years, one time it was the S2 and another it was the S6, both lasted 1 month with me as I hated the plastic build of the S2 and the horrible UI of the S6. This year I got the S8 instead of the U11 for multiple reasons, design, price(in my country), screen for VR, 3.5mm jack...I love the S8 (exynos) and for the first time I can say it's a keeper :good:
Though! there is something that is killing me in the User Interface, something extremely stup*d from samsung side, something that made me think there was a problem with the screen touch capability at first: You can't pick anything on a menu as long as the rolling animation is not 100% finished
I mean let's say you are in the setting menu and you are rolling up and down when you see the Apps tab and click on it, it won't open because the menu is still slightly rolling, this was not the case on any HTC I had, I could pick any tab while the menu was flying.
I don't know if our brave devs can do something to break this stup*id limit made by samsung, or else let's samsung know they have to let us pick any tab in a menu without us having to wait an extra seconds, I end up sometimes double even triple taping on a tab to let it open, it feels like the very first touch screen nokias

You can change Samsung's stock animation if you don't like it. Hell you can even pull HTC's animation and use that if you want to.

If you meant set animations to 0, I did that but it has no impact at all on the settings rolling/touch thingy

Samsung can't listen you here at xda
Contact Samsung support and provide feedback there

Is there an xposed module to replace samsung menu scrolling with an Android stock or HTC?

i think you should go back to HTC if this is bothering you  i don't fully understand what the problem is here, when you scroll you tap to stop the scroll and then choose your selection. this is to stop mistaken selections if you continue to scroll on a bigger selection.
maybe try lowering your DPI so less scrolling is involed? its less than half a second for me to scroll from top to bottom with one swipe :s

Completely agree. It's most noticeable on recent apps

Well if we can enhance samsung UI why not?
Stop scrolling with one tap then choosing with another one is like double tap

Strange I don't have that issue with recent apps
Maybe because I'm on custom rom

All I meant was I think it is like that on purpose.
I have never considered it to be an issue before, maybe because unlike you I have not had a HTC since the wildfire. I have had other devices .. sony/lg And many different Os with custom roms but never noticed it before. And even now I don't see it as an issue
You can flash a custom rom if you like but I don't think stock android will be any different for you also you will loose most things that make the s8 what it is including camera quality

I have used few HTC phones for some time and my last device was HTC 10, which I did like and know that Sense UI on HTC is much more smooth and fluid than on Samsung. The scrolling on S8 doesn't bother me and if I scroll, then see what I am looking for, I just tap to stop at that spot.

So how do you do it?

Here is a example. The rest you will have to do yourself/figure out yourself.

Go to SETTINGS > Accessibility > Dexterity and Interaction > "CLICK AFTER POINTER STOPS" switch to ON and you can adjust the slider if you want to.
This will make the scrolling and tapping more like you prefer on your HTC (I just got my S8 Active coming from an HTC One M9). However, it makes the scrolling animations VERY choppy when you hold your finger down and scroll slowly.
Hope this helps, I love the phone but am struggling with the software/UI.

Android big design problem.

hi guys...
since i started using an android phone i've been surprised of how the interface is poorly designed for the comfort of the user, one of the major issues for me is the "back button", and the problem is a lot worst with phones with screens over 4". everytime you need to go back you have to move your finger to the lower part of the phone where this button is located and if you dont have big hands it is very uncomfortable, it is even painful after a while,
i think that those buttons should be removed from android, now with ics and jellybean there is that software buttons that keep the same problem and also are a waste of space on the screen.
every app should have its own "back button" in some place that is easy to reach with your finger like the apps for the iphone ( dont kill me for using the iphone like an example in this particular aspect).
what do you guys think???

Well, iPhone has the back button embedded in the app and many are saying they need to implement dedicated back key in their phones. So its all about personal choice bro.
And I don't think Android needs to remove the back key and if you've used an iPhone you would know the hassle using it without a back button. Many iOS apps have back key located at various areas in their UI. So a normal user, who don't have much experience in using smartphones would get confused easily. But if dedicated back key is there, it makes all easy.
EDIT: Regarding the ICS/JB soft-keys option, if the manufactures think its a waste of space, they can simply disable it by modifying a line in one of the xml files. And if they decide they need not have to give their phones any hardware/capacitive buttons, they'll enable it. So google have given this feature as optional, and why would anyone think of removing that handy feature.

i think the back button is useful, but this is an ergonomic problem.. i think having a back button in the app it is a better solution, the waste of space on the screen also sucks, and i doubt that some pepole could be confused by a button with a back-arrow icon on it

After all, everyone gets a User-Manual with their phones. And every people that have paid for their new shiny phone would die to boot up fast and they'll look around, and by looking around they can easily know, the arrow stands for the Back key. :silly:

The main problem of the iphones back button is, is that sometimes it had different words, its in different places within the app, and its not simply a back button sometimes.
For example, when I use the keyboard on iOS, I have to tap on an area in the screen to close the keyboard, whereas on android its just a simple tap of the back button. Its just extremely consistent and I found myself tapping the empty area next to the home button on an ipod touch more than a few times expecting there to be a back button.
Although I have never used something as big as the One X, I imagine it would be hard (as you said) to reach the button without risking dropping the phone. But then I guess you buy a phone that fits your hand size, not something too big that you know will be a hassle

If you use your left hand to hold the phone, why can't u use your little finger of your left hand to press the back button (it's convenient to me)
If u use the right hand, u can use the thumb of the right hand to press back.
Just my advice, no offence

this is not an iphone vs android discussion.. i do not say the back button is not useful the thing is that the location of the button is very uncomfortable in devices with a big screen if you dont have huge hands.
i like 4,3" and 4,7" screens thats why i have a 4,3 screen.. but with the back button down there, atleast for my hand size, it is very annoying to use.
really nobody else noticed this issue?? i mean your finger is most of the time at the middle of the screen and from there you move it like a compass to the upper and lowwer part of the screen, now take a phone with a 4,3 (or bigger) display and try to do that, you have to use your other hand or you have to somehow move the phone so the bottom (where the back button is located) is reachable for your finger and in that process you can drop the phone or end up with tendinitis after a long time of use.

sorry but what you say does not make any sense, your "little finger" might be ridiculously large and flexible to do that.

do you know what is constructive criticism?? i like android, i like my phone i just wish they can improve the back button thing.. is that too much for you?
Personal preference. I like the dedicated back and menu buttons.
Never had a problem with them, makes switching or going through apps much faster than having to locate the back button on each app (which is not always obvious where they put it)
I'm asian. My fingers are relatively smaller than you guys but for me the buttons are very convenient to use. Mine is the S2.
Navigation bar is not a waste of the screen. Why? Because it's not just back key. There are recent apps and home too. For a futuristic full touch phone without any buttons, what do you expect for the alternatives of those 2 other keys? Gestures? That will be hard to be used.

It's really is a personal choice.
I personally love the back button, have no problems using it with one hand, nor do with GF with her small hands and Optimus 4X HD, which is a larger phone than my Galaxy S2. Both of us cite the back button as a large factor contributing to the usability of Android.
If you don't like the back button, you can always switch to the iPhone. This is such a rare complain that I must say that you, OP, are in the sheer minority.
To add on, the fact that Windows Phone implements a back button as well shows that this is a feature that is beneficial rather than detrimental as you believe.

i repeat, im not saying the back button is not useful!! all im saying is that the button is not well placed it is just an ergonomic problem.
for example, it would be a lot more easy to reach if they move to button to the side of the phone (contrary to the volume buttons), i know it sounds like weird place to put it, but if you take your phone you will notice that is a place where you always could easy reach the button without using your other hand or move the phone.
I like the back button too. As I don't need to rely on app developer to setup a back button

You could use this app (requires root though) :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey
It provides on screen functionality for navigation keys, which could be placed anywhere on the screen of your choice.
rodmc123, may I aks what device you are using? I believe it's also a manner of the ergonomics of the device itself. Many flagship devices have large screens and while design is nice, ergonomics may lose. I use the HTC One S momentarily (planning to rid it when new Nexus phones appeal), which is 2.56 by 5.15 inch, with a (screen) diagonal of 4.3 inch. That's too large for me to handle with one hand. Even though I'm not having much trouble using both hands most of the time, I do find it inconvinient I have to.
And indeed, there's the software button vs hardware button discussion. I believe it is simply mostly due to the ergonomics of the device itself, and depending on the OEM, software overlays creating additional bugs. Again, I'm a HTC user, got quite a bit of these stupid design flaws myself.
I can see the OP's point here, I started of with an HTC Hero which had quite a unique design with it's angled "chin" It was just the right size for one-handed operation. I upgraded to an HTC Sensation, being left handed, I run into trouble reaching the home button with my thumb. In fact using all the Hardware buttons at the bottom of the device does require shifting upwards in my palm.
It's got me wondering, would the hardware buttons be better off at the top? This being Android of course we don't need to wonder, we can try it out! Cyanogenmod for example allows full 360 rotation, although I might have to hack the Launcher a little bit to move the static app bar, I'm sure there was a setting for that pre-cm9, No matter it's just a case of editing the source or the layout xml. I'll just have to get used the upside down symbols.

i have a motorola atrix 2.. anyway i dont think its the ergonomics of this particular device, i think any phone with a big screen would have the same issue with the back button placed at the bottom.
like i said, at the opposite side of the volume buttons would be the best place if you think of the position of your hand and your fingers when you are holding the phone.

[Q] Nexus 5, G2, HTC One and S4 in terms of one handed usage?

I used to have an SII, and then jumped on the large screen bandwagon (after using it in a store) thinking it wouldn't affect me much. Fast forward one year after my Note II's purchase, if there is one thing I want in my next phone, it is to be able to use it with one hand easily.
One handed usage - Reach all points on a phone, including all the navigational buttons without shuffling or moving the phone in your hands.
Now I have already tried the S4, and I couldn't use it with one hand (Mind you, I have average sized hands, it's just not easy to do it).
My questions are for those of you who have used these devices:
1. How does one handed usage compare between the Nexus 5 and S4? Is it a huge difference?
2. How does one handed usage compare between the Nexus 5 and HTC One? Is it a huge difference?
3. How does one handed usage compare between the Nexus 5 and G2? Is it a huge difference?
P.S. I will try the Nexus 5 in stores, though it's going to be some time before it comes in stores here.
UPDATE: I tried out the HTC One and it is possible for me to use it. But even a bit bigger would be impossible. I am more concerned about how the sharp edges of the Nexus 5 make it harder to use.

I know you didn't list it, but I previously used an HTC One (similarly sized to the S4), and I have large hands. I can use the N5/One with one hand, but I wouldn't call it "comfortable," in fact I'd call it precarious, as in order for me to reach the notification drawer with my thumb, I have to rest the phone on the remaining four fingers and reach upward with my thumb. I never use the phone one handed when not sitting down or stable.

The main one for me is to be able to use it with one hand in bed while looking at the ceiling. I think that is possible with the HTC One if I install navigational buttons (I don't care for real estate, one handed use is much more important to me).
I think the Nexus 5 is great to use one handed, the bottom bezel actually provides a nice area to hold, and the phone is easy to balance.
The HTC One has a slightly smaller screen than the S4, I think. Both are comfortable to reach the whole screen, but the One is more comfortable to hold in general due to its curved shape and tapered edges.
The G2/N5 are built on very smilar specs. I would guess they use the exact same screen panel. A 5 inch screen is a bit too big for my tastes. I could use them with my hands- average size but with longer versatle fingers that are good for manipulating devices- but it wouldn't be preferable. Plus, fitting such a large phone in my pocked would be a pain.
Of the choices you list, I would suggest the S4. I own the One, and recommend that above the S4. HTC really picked up their game since the old EVO days...

Wait, what?!
I can tell you this - much harder to do than my N4, about the same as a Galaxy S3.
It is however manageable, and the curved back helps.
Once I stick it in my Spigen Slim Armor, it becomes a challenge for me, no way I can reach all points on screen one handed.
I do use my N5 with one hand on my way home from work. It is possible. But I need to move the phone in my hands in order to reach the top (e.g. address bar of browser) and the bottom (navigation keys) of the screen. This is dangerous because you can drop the phone if your are not very careful.
The width of the phone is not a problem for me.
I do not want to miss the large screen of the N5. But I am now 100% certain that I do not want an even larger phone.

Getting to the top isn't easy even with big hands. Which is why I HAVE NO IDEA why so many devs put their bars AT THE TOP OF APPS.
Anyway, might go back and try out Nova launcher so i can swipe down for notficiation bar as Google refuses to implement gestures.

I don't have problems with the width. I have problems with the height.
I tell you its much easier to wield one handed then my previous Note 2. I was getting tired of hearing "what is that?" "it's so big" and it's even worse hearing people remark about my phone. So I wanted to downsize my handset and its a great size. I can one hand it for the most part but a little stretch for the top and bottom areas...

Almost, the top and bottom are a slight stretch but my thumb can reach the other side again. So i can use swype one handed which was an issue with my note 2.

I jumped directly from S2 two nexus 5..most of the time I can reach all parts of the screen with one hand(thumb).. perfect size, not too big like note 3 or too small like iPhone 5s..

At what times are you not able to reach all parts of the screen?
Say I'm using left hand and trying to reach setting in notification bar.. I won't be able to do that.. But don't find it an issue since I'm right handed

Setting is actually a big button on stock android.. When using right handed, can you reach the new tab button on chrome at the top left? Can you also reach the profile picture in the notification tray (the button next to brightness)?

Anybody waiting for this over the Note 4?

Hey all
I for one will be waiting for this over the Note 4 (when it finally arrives in the UK) The curved screen technology really appeals, the slightly reduced battery capacity really does not bother me that much, for me its a small price for such an intriguing new feature. As the rest of the specs are pretty much identical to the Note 4, its down to who feels this new design is worthy of the wait.
Who's in? and how do other members feel about the extra screen real estate?:good:

I think I'm in your camp too. The only thing is, I have read some obscure articles claiming that this might not actually come to market for some time due to production issues and the curved glass. My contract renews in November, so hopefully we'll hear some more news before then.

My contact is up in October, but will move over to a SIM only contract until available. I can live with my faithful note 3 a little longer:highfive:
Lets hope the rumors are untrue, first time in a while I've been truly excited about an upgrade. :good:
Yep waiting on this one.... The note 4 is too close to my note 3 to be interested in it.
Waiting ... :highfive:

I'm on Verizon, living in the Greater Manchester Metroplex (actually, a little rural town but it sounds good). The odds of our corporate store having the Edge - even ONE - are dismal. So I'm going to have to order it online at 12:00:01 AM the day of release... or pre-order, whichever comes first.
I'm really hoping I can get the Edge, although one part of me is hesitant: the MODDER part of me.
How much development will there be for the Edge? Will there be sufficient quantities of stock to satisfy the demand on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon? Or will each U.S. carrier have maybe 50 of these things? Will developers even bother with it? Or will there be enough of a supply that developers will embrace it, root it, bootstrap it and create custom ROMs?
That is my question...
I'm waiting on this as well. At first, when I saw the details on the Note 4 when Samsung had their introduction, I was relieved because I knew I would save money since there was really nothing(in my opinion) worth upgrading from a Note 3 for.
But once I saw the info on the Note Edge, I was excited because I knew that I wanted to get it(and slightly disappointed because I thought I would be saving money on a phone upgrade this year.).
From what I've seen on the net, the Note 4 should launch in the United States sometime in October. Hopefully this means the Note Edge will launch in November.
The thing I really like about the Edge is that it will be very useful in multitasking since the access to app shortcuts will be on the Edge display. This will really increase productivity in my opnion. Even with the smaller sized battery, it should be fine since we can use the Edge display to check on notifications, etc. without waking the main screen.
I am still on my good 'ol Note 2. I wanted to original upgrade to the Note 4 until I saw the Note edge. Just wish they would give out some info
I have a GFlex now and impatiently waiting for the Edge!!!!
If the Note Edge is <$1000, I will definitely get it regardless of custom Roms, support, or reduced battery issue, simply because I want to do my part as to motivate Samsung in trying something new to smartphone world. Samsung took pioneer steps that no one else has taken for the good of the whole, instead of most company out there who only goes after their profit.
Only 1 question I still have regarding the Edge, and this is after watching all videos, articles of it. If we can turn on the curve screen for notification and such without turn on the main screen, then how do we plan to do so? I mean, should I press the power button? or a home button? Or whatever button? Wouldn't pressing those physical buttons turn on the main screen as well? Please someone tell me...

Hmmmm, wouldn't it burning battery, like Swipe-to-Wake? Since it's always detecting gesture, kinda defeat the "saving juice by not turning on main screen" idea.

The g3 has a similar kernel that stays awake at all times, and it doesn't really impact battery life

It cosume same battery as led watch.....
The swipe detection is fully baked by company....not by thirdparty which drain battery...so not to worry about much battery draining

Yea I think that the edge would be a swipe like the note 3.
if i reach for my phone the screen lights up and tells me the time and miss calls, email etc...
so I can seen samsung making a setting for picking which screen to be active for swipe.
also I believe the power button would be map for the full screen on. And they will probably have swipe over just for the side screen. It means sense to me but let's see of they do it.
I'm thinking of getting the Note 4 when it drops since the Edge doesn't look like it'll be for sale until early next year. I'm on T-Mobile so technically I could "JUMP" after 6 months (April). Whatever phone I get, strong development support is a huge factor.

I was at the UK Samsung Experience. store at Stratford and was told the Edge is not coming to the UK as an official device release.
i'm waiting for Edge. I think if Australia release is 5th Nov, US would be before that. All carriers still have this as "coming soon". I wish Samsung was as aggressive as Apple in marketing and releases.
Just heard this will be a very limited release. Not for the UK or US.

[Q] Sooo laggy...

:crying:
Love the look and feel of the phone. But, its really really slow and lags ALOT. I've factory reset three times now and no difference. Really frustrating because I wanna love this phone. No one seems to mention this in any reviews. I have the t-mobile version btw. Any ideas?

I find it has a little more lag than the S5 I had, not enough to return it. Maybe Lollipop might fix, or a small update from Samsung.

I guess maybe root will make it better. Or wait for OTA update. Early review do mention the lag and wish official launch module can be better. Seems not the case here.

So you root the phone and disable lots of staff, does it lag still?
Honestly the only lag i see is when clicking on recents button. It takes a sec or 2 to show. I am rooted, xposed, using Wanam, Gravity Box, and Blurred System Ui modules. Couple of my own mods and i removed all apks i do not use, froze sfinder in tibu.
Make sure you unlock development options by tapping on build# a few times in settings about, then lower all 3 animation values to .5 and make sure gpu rendering os UNCHECKED. Then go into svoice and click settings. In svoice settings UNCHECK open svoice via home key. Those 2 things should def help you a bit, and is pretty much as far as you can go without root. Also dl Greenify and hibernate all iser apps only. GL hope it gets better for you. If you need help with anything pm me.

Weord.
I don't get any lag. It's faster note 3 and just flows smoothly.
I did disable s voice, flipbook, lookout, and all tmobil crap tho.
I notice a bit of lag when in Facebook/Messenger and when I type really fast on the stock Samsung keyboard it seems to lag a bit and tries to catch up, resulting in typos.
How do you disable Flipboard?
T-mobile note 4 here, had a white note 4 about a week ago and in comparison, just as smooth if not smoother. Also sidenote, build quality is so much better, perfect screen and bezel levels, note 4 was uneven all the way around.

Press and hold on the home screen
Then click home screen settings
There will be an option to remove it from home screen.
Also you can go into development options and make the animation shorts.

I haven't noticed any lag to point of where it is annoying. You should just return the phone, and get something else. There are a lot of other phones to choose from, but none of them are like the Note Edge.
I am hating the metal. Same as my wife's Note 4. So much more prone to hairline scratches than the plastic used in previous Note 3!! WTF! I knew that going metal would suck except to satisfy the 'OMFG I NEED METAL" fans. ARGH!

The build quality is not flaw. The metal is there to add strength to design of the edge. I had a Note 3 and the Edge is better than it in every way.
I am liking the edge as well but too can attest to the lag after root. I have to mod if i can. But still worth it. Thanks CHAIN

Stock, non rooted. It's weird any browser I use just lags. Slow response to any touches. My stock non rooted note 3 runs much smother side by side on all major browsers. Might try to maybe call up t-mobile for a replacement. Already disabled all unnecessary apps too.

Homescreen icons

I have a S8+, and one thing that really annoys me is how there is about an inch or so at the top of the homescreen that can't be used for icons or widgets. Normally I would put the Google search bar there, but the highest it can go is about an inch off the notification bar at the top. *Really* annoying to have that space and not use it...
I don't really want to replace the launcher (at least not within 2 days of a brand new phone), so is there a way around it? Or do we have to wait until Samsung realises that the screen aspect ratio is slightly longer that a normal phone, and fixes the issue...
While I'm at it, is there a way to change the icon for a folder to use a specific icon (eg. first app in folder), rather than the usual bad looking (to my eyes at least) tiny apps inside the folder look? Otherwise I'm back to using Folder Organizer I guess... I know Nova probably sorts this all out, but it never 100% agreed with me for whatever reason and I always reverted eventually.
Finally, is there a way to get the AOD screen to appear on a clear flip case? Obviously it's being clever by turning off the display when the flip case is closed (magnet thingy embedded in the case), but as the case is clear(ish) then it defeats the point. Nice if there was a switch in options to keep the AOD screen active even if a case is closed on it, but I cannot find it...
Cheers
I never noticed it left that much spaceā€¦ . now it bugs me lol.
Yeah, it leaves a lot of space. Not sure why. You could fit another row of icons easily, but no go currently.

Fair enough. Thought as much. I'll give it a month, see if I reach unheard levels of OCD, and then install Nova if Samsung don't update. Will be about by 10th Nova install, but I always revert eventually. Always something that annoys me with it...
Stupid really, especially as it seems pretty obvious that it's about the right amount of space you gain from the extra length of the S8. Would bet the farm that Samsung forgot the new aspect ratio when it came to this. Honestly, there must be months of testing, and it's hard to believe it was missed.... Unless of course everyone at Samsung just installed Nova... Wouldn't be too surprised...
That AOD issue with the clear flip screen is well annoying though.... Really is a massive pain, especially when you can see right through the case, and even still use the touch screen (useful for answering calls without opening the case). Samsung does an amazing job on the screen, and then their own case has a compatibility issue....
Hmm, just noticed something... First day using while working, and a couple of times while wirelessly charging it has lost the wifi signal. Never (really really rarely) did that with my old Nexus 5. Don't like that considering I clicked on a notification icon on the AOD and it then tells me my network connection isn't available (and then connects before removing the notification so I don't know what it is). That's annoying... Sleep mode or something for wifi? Think I remember something similar years ago... Anyone?
Cheers
Use Nova Launcher and problem solved
@Crivensie, sounds like you're a bit like me. Nothing wrong with high expectations. About Samsung's testing though...I am not sure how thoroughly they test things because I found many bugs on the phone so far and I wasn't even trying. I'm not surprised at all at the issues you're having.

can we do that here in Samsung
