Updating Rooted Xperia Z5 - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone! I have a rooted Xperia Z5 (E6653) running on stock 5.1.1, with just a few minor customizations. The phone is getting kinda slow now and giving me quite some problems, so I thought that maybe it would be good for me to delete everything and start from scratch, while updating it at the same time. On my old Xperia Z, I believe I could still apply Sony's OTA updates while preserving root (or at least that's how I remember it), but that does not seem possible with the Z5? Most of the guides I see around show how to root the phone but not how to update it once it is rooted.
Anyway, here are the details. I'm pretty new around here and only rooted my phone so I could do some customizations that would make my life more convenient, so do bear with my lack of technical knowledge!
I rooted my phone back in April 2016 following this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/general/guide-sony-xperia-z5-unlock-root-tweaks-t3298224
I used "Androplus Kernel Permissive v12" and "twrp 3.0.0-0-E6653-20160220".
I believe that following this process has caused me to lose my TA partition and DRM keys? I'm not sure what this affects but is there a workaround for this?
I am thinking of installing this as well: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/rom-slimx-optimized-rom-to-date-t3497907. Does that mean that I should only update to 6.0.0?
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I did a search and could not locate a thread that answered all my questions. If anyone could help me with a list of steps, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance.
P.S. Is there any guide out there regarding some of the terms and maybe some basic technical details of Android? I would like to know more than basically knowing how to flash stuff.

Just wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache and install that rom and that's it.

[Q] Need answers related to Moto G 2013 OTA updates

I am basically a noob when it comes to rooting, coding and other enthusiast level stuff !
But today I Unlocked the bootloader, installed CWM, Rooted(SuperSU) my Moto G(xt 1033) running 4.4.4 , My question is would I be able to get the Lollipop OTA ? If not what steps would I have to take to get it on my phone !
All help is appreciated , Thank you.
and this has been answered in about 3000 other threads already...
As @scott_doyland already said, this has been answered many times here. On the other hand, some of those answers are incorrect, so lets sum it up.
So far updating has worked with rooted phones as long as you had not touched any of the files that were going to be updated (like build.prop edits, new Adreno libraries or custom kernel and modules). However, you needed either stock recovery or PhilzCWM or TWRP. Stock CWM doesn´t work with OTA updates on Moto G.
With Lollipop it should be pretty much the same, but I have seen reports about TWRP and PhilzCWM not working this time. Not sure if was PEBKAC or there really is a problem, but stock recovery is always a safe way to go.
And one more thing. On Nexus 5 the update fails even if you just touch the system partition*. The update process doesn´t check for files anymore - it calculates a partition checksum and then updates it on filesystem level. We have not seen this yet on Motorola phones, but it may happen in the future. For now, rooted Moto phones are OK with OTA.
* Rooting installs su binary on the /system partition.

Unroot without losing data and custom kernel?

Hi at risk of been repetitive im going to ask something that might have already been answerd on the the forum but given the specific caracteristic of my device i hope someone can answer anyway
Thing is i have a rooted nexus five (6.0.1 Stock ROM) with Ek kernel and I was wondering if i could unroot through the SuperSu menu without losing any data and keeping the custom kernel just so i could install the lastest OTA update and encrypt my phone. It seems i would have to flash stock boot.img to encrypt but i dont know if this is enough to update and encrypt without losing custom kernel and data in the process as I pretend to inmediatly root after doing these two things. Also if anyone can recommend a good alternate kernel for perfomance/battery life just in case there is a better option although i have to say im very happy with this one.
Hope this particular question hasnt being answerd before and any help would be aprecciated
Thank you very much

Updating Rooted Xperia Z5?

Hi guys,
I have a Xperia Z5 running on Android 5.1.1, rooted but completely stock otherwise. The phone has been pestering me about the software update for a while now, but I've been putting it off.
I assume I cannot just use the OTA update to update a rooted phone, while keeping root, is that correct? If this is the case, how do I go about getting a newer version of Android on plus rooted? Is there any special steps I need to take to do this coming from a rooted phone as a base?
What about the DRM keys, there seems to be some new method of dealing with that while keeping X-reality and camera improvements, can I still do that even though I used the earlier workaround for the loss of DRM keys when flashing? (it was sometime like Dec. 2015 I rooted it, my memory on the process is rusty)
Finally, did anyone ever get Xposed working on this model of phone, coming from my Galaxy the one thing I really miss was the Youtube Adblocker module for Xposed, if I could get that back I'd love it!
I did have a search around for information on this, but most of the threads assume you're starting from a stock phone as a base, not a rooted phone, and I was not sure if the new DRM workaround was compatible with the other one... I'd like to not do something I shouldn't have and end up bricking the thing!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
flash latest marshmallow 32.2.A.5.11 and flash patched stock and flash supersu sr5 2.78 in twrp and you are good to go
Thanks mate, nothing to worry about then really?

nothing to worry about, plus patched kernel has all drm fixes so xreality, etc.. works

Rooting and Roms ?

Hello,
Basically I'm trying to root my XZ(F8331) and trying to install a rom, but I've got a bit of an issue and need a complete backup of the entire phone before I proceed to root and rom the phone (as from my understanding it will wipe everything on my phone). So how would I go about doing so ? I'm on 7.1.1 and honestly cannot tolerate how slow my phone has become, also rom suggestions are welcome(looking for a stable, fast rom with a working camera). If there are other similar posts please link me them and I'll close this thread.
Thank you

Do you really need the latest security patch? and other thoughts for newbies et al

By all means, read @Neffy27 's FAQ if you are starting out. even as a refresher for stuff you may have forgotten.
-But do think a bit about what you are doing:
-Do not modify your phone unless you are willing to toss it into the trash, as that could well be the result, no matter how well planned.
-Always have a spare on hand. I used my old Moto G3 when my MZP died suddenly. Worked just fine. You know, things really haven't changed all that much since Gingerbread...
-If you are going to be getting the latest OTA stuff by doing a full flash you might want to reflect on just how much, or little, you would gain. We all like to think that if we have the latest security patch we are somehow more safe, though I don't believe I have ever heard of a phone being affected by something just because it is not on the latest patch. I was running my old Moto z play on an aug '18 (if I remember correctly) patch with no problems up until a few weeks ago when it was done in by an expanding battery envelope which cracked the display. Consider, also, that many of the custom roms that are available are not updated at all - it takes a ton of work to try to get/keep a custom ROM current, AND working! Yet you never hear of viruses or the like.
- Be aware that if you modify ANYTHING on your phone, even as little as a new boot logo to cover up the unlocked bootloader message, you will prevent your phone from taking any further OTA updates. Some mods, like adding TWRP, may still allow it to try to download and install an OTA, but when it reboots to finish that install, it will fail since it needs to re-boot through stock recovery to complete. And it will continue offering you that update.
- There is a difference between the partition structure in our phones on 8.x, and those on 9. 9 is not full Treble, only a "partial" Treble, and really only the addition of a second set of partitions which OTA updates can use to update the system - instead of modifying the single partition set, it modifies the other (a or b) set and boots to that on update completion. If it fails it can always boot the other set. Theoretically! Makes it safer than the old way of doing OTA updates, but this may cause problems if you try to flash a 2 partition set phone with a single partition set ROM. I don't believe anyone has run any experiments on this, so YOU, when you flash things without thinking about the situation, may get an unusable phone. I do not know the answer here. If you read these forums which detail other's problems, you may trod a bit more hesitantly!
-The idea here is to have fun, and sometimes to experiment with new things. To a newbie, losing the use of a $200 phone can be a tough life lesson. Let's help them out by helping them to be cautious!
Agreed. I've been running stock with January 2018 patch, TWRP installed and Magisk for root and successful safety net bypass.
I'm looking to see if running Lineage will help streamline any update processes. It looks like they have their own recovery too.
Maintaining root has become a pain in my ass the past few years.

I would be careful about lineage as folks don't seem to be able to get back to stock from it.
I agree about maintaining root. I will likely just stay on stock with this one.
