A quick search did not reveal anything, I was wondering if anyone had tried the Incipio car dock with a more traditional ball mount. My car is huge and has an air conditioner for a cabin about 1/2 it's size, I REALLY do not want to block a vent...
I was thinking about using the arm from my Moto X's dock, but it would be good to know if the ball is close to the same size.

I'd love to know the answer to this also. I drive a Tundra, and live in Louisiana, so blocking that one vent does suck. I position it high, that does help, but if your solution works please post up. Thank you

If you can take yours off the vent and measure the diameter of the mounting ball, I might have a six-dollar solution for everybody.

I measure 0.614” or 15.6mm.
My solution was to design and print a new threaded mount then screw a RAM mount over it. It was a fairly expensive solution but it is clean and works with my current setup. I'll post pictures later.

I haven't measured but that sounds close as hell to the Window/Dash mount for the Moto X 2013 dock.

I've done most of that drive before, at least it's a nice drive.
I can tell you the ball is smaller than the Garmin ball/original Motorola ball. I am looking at options now. I had the same issue with the Droid MAXX dock, and found a solution for it. I live in Houston, and have not gone back since the hurricane hit. I'm heading back this weekend. Assuming my house is ok, I'll see if the solution I used for the Droid MAXX works for this as well.
RAM Mount solution?
Also researching this for the Moto Z2 Force.
I came across a reddit thread suggesting that the 0.56" RAM "A" ball mount can be made to work. RAM Part # RAM-A-238U ($10) and RAM Part # RAM-A-336U ($13) both have the "A" size ball mount.
NOTE: I'm unable to post external links (new user), but the thread is on the Moto Z subreddit and is titled "Attach your incipio Moto Z car dock to more than the air vents."
The RAM ball A is slightly too small. I used this same ball for the Droid MAXX car dock which is the same size as the Incipio dock. I had to fill in the gap to make it secure. I'd prefer not to do the same thing this time, but I might have to. I'm highly annoyed that they did not do any kind of research to see what ball size to use. If you go to gpscity.com you will find many mounting options. If you want a specific mount for your car, you can search "vehicle specific mount" with your car model. Look for something that has an AMPS plate, and then find a RAM A mount with an amps plate. The plates will mate together with screws. Because the AMPS plate is common, you can find options to mount to many things besides a car.
Remember, if you get the RAM A ball, it will be too small. You will have to fill in the gap with something to make it work. I used bits of a plastic bag, and also experimented with partially filling the mounting hole with epoxy. Both worked OK, but I cursed the people that made that mount, as I now curse the people that made this mount.
As I said above, I did this with the Griffin car dock for the Droid MAXX, which was the same size ball mount. I don't want to do the same with the Incipio dock, as I plan to keep it as long as they make phones that fit it. I am still looking for better solutions, and will revisit this thread if I find something that is a more professional solution.

As reference, the 15.6mm ball we are cursed with is the same as the TomTom ball, and there are very few options available for it. The 17mm ball that is used by Garmin, and many others was also used by Motorola when they made their own car docks. I had my Droid X and Droid RAZR car docks mounted wherever I wanted them to be. Thanks for firing those guys Google. . .
I cannot confirm that this will work, but I found this today. www DOT bracketron DOT com/products/tomtom-amps-plate Sorry, I can't post links yet.
This claims to be a TomTom compatible ball mount, which would indicate that it will work for us. Again, you will need to find an AMPs plate mount that works for you. There are many many options out there.
I have ordered two of the above, and also two 16mm metal ball mounts from another site that might work as well. I noticed some refer to the TomTom 15.6mm ball as a 16mm ball, so I took a chance. I will post results when I have them.
So what was the result? Did they fit?
Ask Incipio?

I did get my dock in today, and it fits perfectly on the Moto x 2013 stand. Firm fit too.
So whenever looking for alternatives a TomTom ball will do the trick . Thanks everyone for the research, now mine that travelled across the ocean can be put to use
I had my Incipio car dock break the other day - the part that holds the ball snapped off the mount and the bottom jaw of the vent clip broke. I was able to glue the ball holding part back on but the jaw would not set/fix.
I had an idea to convert to a windshield mount (like I had wanted in the first place anyway) and did the following
Took off the back piece that holds the ball so the only part was the car dock itself - file everything as flat as possible on the back.
I went to RAM mounts and purchased the following parts:
RAP-B-378U UNPD RAM FLEX ADHESIVE MNT SYST 1" BALL ($12.49)
RAP-B-104-224U-QU1 UNKP RAM SING SOCKET W/O 238 ($23.49)
The first part is an adhesive disk attachment for anything mostly flat that has a 1" ball mount. The second is a decently heavy duty suction cup mount with an articulating arm that looked to be long enough...they have enough choices at that point if you need longer I'd assume.
The round part that adheres is too large for the dock but with a little bit of trimming I was able to get it to fit nicely (trimmed at the bottom so it notched around the plugs and at the sides for the detach wings - did not have to touch the top)
I installed tonight and it's working great so far... I assume the adhesive is pretty heavy duty but I don't have a report on durability of that part yet - the suction cup seems like it will take the windshield with it if hit hard enough.....
Just one way to add a suction cup mount - unfortunately an extra $52 bucks shipped but worth it IMO...
Hi everyone! I thought I'd bring this topic back to life after a year and a half to share the solution I ended up with.
It's a knock-off Ram ball adapter sold under various brand names* and descriptions**. I have taken pictures of what one looks like on a green Ping-pong table, and how it can be attached to an Incipio car dock on one end and a Ram arm on the other, but I cannot post links***. The Incipio clamp can be tightened down on the flat part hard enough so that it doesn't move around too easily. The screw is inserted through the hole such that even if it does swivel, it doesn't come off. According to at least one review, the adapter is too flimsy to use on a motorcycle and the thin steel starts to vibrate, but in a car, it has been stable enough for me.
Ram makes a couple of products that are similar, but they look a little too thick to fit between Incipio's clamping jaws. I would be happy to be proven wrong on this, though.
I hope this helps someone! I'm certainly happy with the result, although it looks a bit more busy than I'd prefer. The upshot of having this longish contraption between the Ram arm and the Incipio car dock is that I was able to glue the Ram adhesive disk attachment referred to by acidlauncher to my car's steering column cover (so that when I adjust the wheel, my phone stays in the same position relative to it! I'm quite proud of that) and the whole thing is long enough to peek out from behind the wheel.
* brand names such as perfk, huiouer, fifimin, and small-chipinc
** descriptions such as "Stainless Steel 1 Inch Ball Arm Adapter for Motorcycle Rearview Mirror" and "360 Degree Ball Head Rotate Motorcycle Angled Base Z Type with 1 Inch Ball Head Adapter"

That would be https://photos.app.goo.gl/inNNnV7qMDZP41fV9, which looks amazing, but unfortunately looks like it requires the vent clip not to have already broken, and doesn't show what the RAM mount attaches to…
If you provide direct links to the parts, I could add them to this post.
Thanks for the feedback, and for sharing the link! I have updated the album with pictures of a car attached to the whole contraption. It's glued on with RAM Flex Adhesive Ball Base and it has worked out well thus far.
Yeah, it does rely on the vent clip, sad to hear yours is broken. How bad is it, perhaps you could still jerry-rig something together with the proper assortment of nuts, bolts and washers?
I ordered this, but it's not an exact fit: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034IV2NO
Its 16mm TomTom ball is sufficiently larger than the Incipio's 15.6mm (?) ball that it would not go through the retaining ring without being forced, and getting that ring screwed straight into place was VERY difficult and time-consuming, due to the lack of clearance and tiny difference in diameter. For the ability to detach it and possibly move it to another car, I attached it to this: https://www.proclipusa.com/variation/100502-locking-move-clip-kit-for-non-tilt-swivel-holders

Update 18Jan2011: I was not 100% happy with the way the dock looked, it did not looked well finished and was not very smooth. the plastic is actually very hard to sand, it would take some serious time doing it by hand and with a sander or dremel the plastic heats up to much and melts. The perfect solution is to add plaster, I had some in the garage and you probably do too. This was easy to do, just cake some plaster all around your dock, make sure that you only put a thin layer on the part where the phone will sit, you don't want to change the shape of that. after it dries take some sand paper to it and make it baby butt smooth. After getting it the way you want grab a damp paper towel and clean all the dust off, I also found that this does a good job getting rid of some hard to reach imperfections that sand paper could not. Once the dock is all clean its ready to be painted, don't forget to tape off the micro sd plug.
I am really satisfy with the way the dock looks now, here is a pic of it.
the only down side to this is that if you drop it, you will most likely chip off the plaster so keep it safe. If you guys have any ideas as to something better I could of used let me know because I will be making another dock for the second fascinate in the house.
After adding plaster

Hello everyone, I will attempt to give a step by step instruction on how to make your own custom dock. It does not matter if you have a case (any) or an extended battery this method will work for you.
This is not the cheapest method, or the easiest or the fastest or the safest and the dock wont look as good as the OEM dock, but at the end you will have a dock that fits your phone perfectly and that is what really counts.
Materials
1- AMACO Friendly Plastic Pellets, the 4.4 oz bottle prob has enough for this project but its $12.5 and you will need to pay for shipping (on amazon). I think the best deal out there is the 28 oz bottle, it has a lot more than your going to need but after you realize what you can do with this stuff you will be glad you got the bigger bottle. here is the link Amazon.com: AMACO Friendly Plastic Pellets, 28-Ounce, Ivory: Kitchen & Dining
2- Plastic wrap. You will need to wrap your phone and case to protect it against hot plastic and water.
3- Pot, stove, water.
4- Small chopping board or something else thats flat, to flatten the soft plastic.
5- Cooking thermometer, to measure the temp of the water.
6- Micro usb cable, if you will not be using the OEM usb cable make sure that your computer recognizes the phone, some usb cables don't work for some reason. I made the mistake of not checking and the cable i bought on ebay does not work with my laptop, not a prob for me because dock will be in bedroom.
7- Cold water in a bowl.
8- Dremel tool with sanding attachment to sand plastic. If you don’t have the dremel or something similar its going to be a challenge to put details on your mold.
9- Spray paint of desired color (optional)
Guide
1- Read the instructions on how to use the plastic pellets. I am not responsible for any damage you do to yourself or your phone. You will be dealing with hot water, you can burn yourself or get your phone wet if you’re not careful.
2- Fill the pot with water and bring to a temp between 140 F and 150 F.
3- Get your phone ready, turn off your phone and take the battery out. You will need to protect your phone form hot plastic and a little bit of water. I suggest you wrap your phone with plastic wrap (look in the kitchen) then put the case on and wrap it again. Don't over wrap because this would add bulk to your phone and it will change its size.
4- Plug in the micro usb cable to your phone.
5- By now the water should be hot enough, check the temp and drop some plastic pellets in, enough for plastic to cover the micro usb cable plug to the phone. The pellets should turn clear when they are ready to be molded. I did not have a thermometer so I just had the water below the boiling point. the water should hot but not enough to burn you if you were to dip your finger for a sec or 2.
6- Take a spoon and scoop out the plastic, start molding the plastic around the usb connection, make sure to press in plastic in between the plug and the case, this would make a sort of key so when you slide your phone in it will only fit one way, this will prevent any damage to the usb during normal use.
7- Let the plastic cool, you will notice that it will start to turn white again. It should take about 10 mins for it to be stable enough for you to unplug it and put it under cold water. It is very important to make the usb part of the dock first, if you try to make the rest of the dock first in my opinion is harder to get the usb part later.
8- Drop some more pellets in the hot water, enough to make the cradle part of the mold like in the picture bellow.
Once the pellets are ready take them out and roll them into a ball, grab the chopping board and press the ball to flatten it. Make sure to put plastic wrap in between to prevent the soft plastic to stick.
9- Plug in the micro usb and make sure the molded plastic fits. place your phone the on top of the flat soft plastic. This step is one of the hardest. You need to mold the plastic around the left side of the phone by the volume rocker. This is important because it will create a sort of track for you to slide you phone in. Also keep in mind that you will want the 3.5mm audio jack and the cameras uncover. Keep molding it around the back of the phone and on to the plastic of the usb plug. Don’t worry if there is a lot of extra plastic you will be able to but the excess with some scissors but try to and smooth as possible this will make it look nicer at the end.
10- Let the plastic cool on your phone, this will guarantee and exact fit, don’t try to get it off your phone or you might end up bending or twisting the plastic. After about 10 mins it should be cool enough to get off your phone without bending. Run in though cold water to finish cooling it off. You should end up with something similar to the picture above but with a lot of excess plastic, start cutting all the extra until you have the basic shape you will want, again remember that you might want the audio jack or camera uncovered.
11- Start sanding all the sharp edges and making the mold look the way you want it, I rounded all the corners and made it a curvy look. It’s up to you. Also make it look smooth, focus on the front of the mold and not the back as that will probably be covered. A good technique is to dip in the mold in hot water for a few seconds. the mold should be tacky but not soft. Start rubbing your hand trying to buff out all the imperfections. Make sure the mold still fits on your phone, is very easy to mess it up.
12- Once your happy with the way your cradle looks is time to find what is going to stand on. There are many things you can use, you can even mold yourself a stand. I wanted it to be heavy that way there was no chance of the phone tipping over or sliding around easily on my nightstand. I could not find anything around the house that was the right weigh or size. I ended up finding a rock on my back yard that had the right characteristics, it had 2 flat sides to I knew I could work with it.
13- I used the rock as the stand. I molded plastic all around the rock making the flat sides flatter and made sure it would not wobble. Again make it look nice, and smooth.
14- Once your happy with the way the cradle and the stand look is time to put them together. Melt some plastic, enough to cover the parts of the cradle and stand that will be touching, you will use it as glue. Dip the stand and the cradle to make them tacky. Put the melted plastic on the stand where it will be connected to the cradle. Press the pieces together and hold it for a min or two, then run it through cold water. Your almost done!
15- Make the newly added plastic smooth and put some finishing touches to the dock, your prepping it for painting.
16- Paint the dock your desire color. Make sure not to paint the usb connection you might clog it.
You’re DONE!!!!
ENJOY YOUR NEW DOCK!!

I didn't read through it yet, but from the looks of it looks very nice. I dont have a use for it. However, i know many will.
Good job.
thanks, I do love it so far very functional.
Very novel idea, and good use of moldable plastic, very nicely written tutorial! Props!
I could see this being a nice way to have an Audio AND charging dock for a car though. Build in an audio cable as well, and buy a universal phone mount that has a removable phone holder (many do, check out semsons.com ) - mold your "dock" to the mount without the phone holder, and voila, instant car dock with audio and charging capabilities. I might give this a go sometime.
However, I would suggest that just getting the Verizon / OEM kickstand case, as a viable/easier alternative for a desk cradle - having the kickstand is like having a dock built into the phone - and IMHO it's also the best case around for our devices (and one of the best kickstand cases for any devices ever). You can get Samsung/OEM charging cords, just like stock with the funky connector, off ebay in 4' and 6' lengths for just a few $'s. I have one plugged into every one of my PC's and cars.
So does it go into the dock app automatically?

I thought about that before, I decided to build the dock because I wanted to stop messing with wires. the dock just sits there ready to go, all I have to do is slide my phone. best example, the other night I realized I forgot to dock my phone, it was one of those times where you were about to fall sleep and you realize you forgot something, normally you will have to fing the cord and try to plug it in to your phone, in the dark is not the easiest thing to do specially if all you want to do is go back to sleep, with out even looking I reached over grabbed my phone and docked it, that simple. I really like not having to grab the usb cord and plug it to my phone. to me that is worth the effort.
I do agree with you that the case with the kickstand is one of the best, too bad I already spend 20 on my seidio case.

there's several people trying to figure this out... I remember one was even going to buy a dock and tear it apart, never heard anything else about that...
Someone tried magnets, but said that didn't work..
So it looks like it's probably something built into the actual dock..
Guess you may could get someone to write an app that makes the desk app auto open when your phone is plugged in and tilted in an angle???? (prob only work if rooted though) I'm talking about stuff way over my head, so..
The official dock probably has one of the pins on the usb connector shorted out or connected to the 5v power to tell the phone that it's docked...

that's exactly what I thought but with one having the OEM dock its hard to tell, if someone that owns a dock and has a multimeter could they check continuity between pins and give us the info we might be able to figure it out.
This is awesome, and congrats! You've been picked up by xda and your idea/thread announced on their twitter feed!
I don't have a sammy phone but have tossed around similar ideas for a while know. I made a car dock for my G1 out of kydex some time back. I was able to form it around my phone for a secure fit and ease of removing it by pressing a tab, but had to plug the usb in after it was mounted. Ofcourse the other problem I had was not being able to slide up the physical keyboard.
I toyed with the idea of using a piece of thin but strong spring steel to have sticking out from the tab are to fit between the keyboard and display. This never went any farther than an idea.
However, you have reknewed my interest! I could make a mold similar to yours, although flipped 180 degrees. Have the front of the mold make a J shape under my send, home, trackball, back, and end key, and have the part under the send key wrap to the left and up. Like a J. The base could be formed to follow the shape of the sdcard cover and then folow forward to just before the volume key cutout. Do basicly yhe same to the top area, shaping out the camera button.
This should form a contoures socket for the phone to slip into. The shape and fit should prevent it from vibrating loose in travel, and would permit me to flip up the screen for physical keys access! This could also work on the droid 1 and 2, lg ally, and about any other phone with a keyboard.
Awesome post, thread and idea. I tip my hat to you sir!!!

Thanks, I cant believe it was picked up by xda, now with all the views surely we can get someone that has the OEM dock for the fascinate to figure out how it knows when is docked so we can auto launch the dock app.
@ jsp254 looking forward to see your car dock, that's actually my next project so if you have any tips let me know.
I will also like for anyone that attempts this to post their tips and if they added any new ideas.

I don't mind constructive criticism, but don't make those kind of comments here, it doesn't add any value to the thread. I also stated on the guide that you won't end up with a dock of OEM quality.

I think it's pretty cool, a lot of work and I don't think I'm going to try it but's it's a very good DIY. How about showing us something better...
The problem I see with the car dock, even in Chicago it gets pretty hot in the summer, and inside a car it could get to 110-120 degrees, would that melt the plastic, or at least deform it enough to have to redo it? If not, then I will definitely try it, as I got an extended battery for my EVO and don't have a car holder anymore.
Great tutorial though, I might have to try it anyways.

That's a good point, have not tried it in hot weather (its cold here in mass) however it should not deform until it reaches a temp of at least 140f°.

it doesn't get that hot outside in chicago, but greenhouse affect is a killer.
I know it is workable at 140f, but will it deform at 110 under slight pressure, like holding the phone? It doesn't have to melt to be a problem, just sag a little bit or change so the phone doesn't fit.

I think I am gonna set my oven to 110° and leave a piece of the plastic there for 10 or 15 min, I'll let you guys know what happens
Update: It seems like I can't set my oven to a temp lower that 170* so I cant actually test this my self, maybe someone else can.
I know there are a few threads on this, but they are cluttered with talk about non-windshield mounting docks/mounts and what apps launch.
My mission is to find the best windshield mounting car dock/cradle/whatever for the HTC Sensation. It has to be tight, so no "goosenecks." No universal junk either.
Options so far:
1) OEM HTC Car dock
The problem with this one seems to be that the "arm" of the mount isn't long enough and may not fit in portrait mode if your windshield is too "raked" (angled). It will hit the windshield in some cases.

The arm was long enough to allow the phone to swivel to any postition without hitting the windshield and it also came up far away from the windshield close to my fingers. Just for reference, I drive a 1994 BMW 325i (E36).
Check out the Arkon Series Mounts. I had the S514 for my DZ, which is a little small for the Sensation but will be ordering Deluxe Mini Mount. At $15, they are great quality products and a good value. Highly recommend.

Interesting, looks like the deluxe has more movement than the regular mini. I say that because it looks like it has an extra joint. Why is it cheaper than the regular Arkon mini mount? Any idea if it has a magnet so that the phone knows it is "docked"? On my motorola with CM7 this would (at the very least, with Car Home uninstalled), keep the screen on without dimming.

I know the OP doesn't like the "crappy universal" mounts, but the universal one I use is the Arkon MG115. And I can say it's beyond crappy universal lol. It's well made. I assume that the OP meant the universal no-name brand with bad build quality.
The reason I opted for the universal one is because I use different cases depending on where I am using the phone. If I am on vacation, I will bring this to use with my Seidio Active case. Otherwise I use an Aprolink hybrid case, which is a bit thinner.
The mini mount I use can be mounted on the dash with the disk you see there and also can be mounted on the windshield of course. But users may vary. Some may not like it and some like other "styles". I posted some personal pics a while back if anyone wants to take a gander let me know, I'll dig em up.
And on a related note, I have been using various docks from craigsdocks.com and they recently released a specific swivel dock made for the Senny and can be adjusted for cases or extended batteries like the Mugen batteries.

Yes, I just meant something of quality. The Arkon MG115 is the Arkon Mobile Grip Mini on their site. I'll probably go either with this or MG114, the "deluxe." Are the little arms padded? Phone doesn't slowly slide down from vibrations? Do the little arms come over the front of the screen once mounted?
I forgot to mention it should allow the camera to see through the mount.
Keep em coming. If someone has pictures of the OEM car dock mounted on a windshield, please post them
I chose the M115 only because I know myself, I would continue to adjust the middle joint to the point of breaking lol. So I opted for the shorty that couldn't be adjusted in the mid arm. I can still swivel pretty well with the dock. And I use this mount with Waze navigation all thetime and take pics to report accidents, traffic conditions, etc.
I had one of these (link to dealextreme) for my X10i and it was a perfect fit. Currently my wife uses one on her HD7 and it's terrific. And you can't really beat the price.
The only dig I have with the oem dock is that it's too easy to pop out the phone. But I loved having the plug in the base.
edit: aaah, i checked out those ebay links. It looks the same except for the different suction holder. Well, the phone cradles on those, in my experience, have all been perfect.
So you have the OEM dock? Can you put the phone into portrait without hitting the windshield?
Do you have pictures of the dealextreme mount? Saw those on ebay as well...

Yup, I have the Sensation OEM car dock. I'm not sure on the windshield, I keep mine behind the gear lever (easier to swipe to change songs, car already has navi). I'll try on the windshield tomorrow and let you know.

Yes, take pictures of both please! I used to keep my Droid mounted up near the mirror with the phone coming within reach of my fingers just off the steering wheel. This way if I did need to look at the phone, the road and traffic is still in the line of sight.

OEM for the win
I went with OEM after trying a Universal T-Mobile car mount they have at the store for $30 bucks, but my Sensation went flying off the windshield after the first tight turn I took together with that universal mount, so it didn't work for me. OEM works well so far, but after trying it mounted on the windshield (which worked well) I ended up putting it on the dash so it doesn't block the windshield at all while being within reach.
May I ask why you're only set on mounting it on the windshield?
Homemade Mount
I actually made my own. I picked up a Garmin Nuvi mount off eBay. I dremeled the clips/tabs off to give a flat surface. Then I used industrial double sided tape to attach a cheap version of a Case Mate barely there cover. The setup works pretty good. I've never had the phone fall out or the mount come off.
I'll post some pics of it when I get the chance.

Its not shaky at all for me. Plus it comes with the vent add on so you dont have to use the neck with the windshield if you dont want. Also my phone is held in place by the sides so I can prop it up higher and use the camera if you like also. There are many options with this mount and can be used with many different devices and later on when you get another phone it will work that also. I used to use it for my desire and now I use it for my sensation. Ive also used it with a garmin and ipod touch. Not trying to tell sell it lol. Just saying you should check it out and give a proper run first before dismissing it.

Here it is in portrait. Here it is in the regular spot next to the deal extreme type of stand (for the HD7, similar size but it won't fit the sensation). Here it is horizontal.
In all the photos, the usb plug is on the bottom. The angle is a little steep, I think if I had rotated it and then adjusted it, it would have been ok. Adjusting it is pretty stiff so I don't like changing too much, lol.

Awesome, thanks for the pics man. Looks like it's not too bad with hitting the windshield. It'd be nice if it came out a little further though. I wonder how the dealextreme one goes on the windshield. That long neck doesn't bend right?

The silver neck on the OEM dock is extendable to get it further away from the glass if needed. Also, T-Mobile had our docks on sale as of a week or so ago in their stores for 39.99... Worth checking it out, they have a great return policy if it doesn't work for you.
Mobile Fun sent this to me today, so a mini review of it below
http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1089397-cover-mate-desktop-cradle/
Once again, thanks to Mobile-Fun for providing me with the Cover-Mate desktop cradle for the HTC One S to review.
They have a huge range of desktop cradles for a whole lot of mobiles, so be sure to have a look to see if there is a nice cradle/desk stand for your mobile
Their customer service is top quality, especially delivery times, dispatched yesterday around 16:00 via Royal Mail First Class and received this morning around 10:30, every other etailer using the same shipping method always takes at least 2 days to get here.
Packaging:
The dock arrived in a standard see through rectangular plastic box. Be very careful when opening the package and removing the card board box containing the cradle though, as I managed to cut my finger on the relatively sharp corners of the plastic box
Within the box, we are supplied with the following:
User Manual
Cradle
USB Cable

A Look at the Cover-Mate Desktop Cradle:
Lets take a look at the features first:
Syncs and charges your device at the same time
Allows horizontal viewing media
Stylish black finish
Net Weight: 90g
Dimension: 140 x 50 x 30 mm
Input: DC 5V 500mA
Output: DC 5V 500mA
Removable Insert to allow mobiles with a case attached to be docked as well
One of the features stated on Mobile-Fun's product description page is the following:
LED light indicator
However, there is no LED light indicator on the cradle. Not that it is needed for the One S as it already has a notification LED, which is orange when charging.
The dock is very well built, it feels solid and not cheaply made/put together unlike a lot of other cradles. It has a glossy finish on the front, where as on the back it is just your standard/plain plastic with no glossy finish, I personally would have preferred it to be the exact same on the front as well, however, all in all it looks nice anyway, just a bit more on the "cheap" side, in terms of looks for the front. All the edges are nicely rounded and smooth to touch.
One particular feature of this cradle is to support mobiles even with a case attached, in order to do this you have to remove the "removable insert" which increases the size of the docking area (will look at this later on to see how handy this is , if you aren't using a case and keep your mobile "naked" then simply "plug" the "removable insert" back in.
The cradle has a nice weight to it, it isn't too heavy and not too light (90g), it is a decent size as well (140 x 50 x 30 mm), obviously it is wider than most cradles as the One S micrco USB port is on the side as opposed to the more common place, the bottom of the mobile.
The USB cable that is supplied with the cradle is long enough for average sized desks, would have liked it to have been a bit longer. A bit of force is required in order to remove the Micro USB from the cradle.
On the bottom of the cradle you have four rubber mounts, this is to provide some grip when sat on the desk and to stop the cradle from scratching your desk. They feel like they are strongly glued on and won't come off with ease any time soon.
Cradle In Action:
Plugging the mobile in and removing it is easy enough, a bit of force is required to remove the One S, so you will need to hold the dock down whilst removing the device.
The mobile sits at a slight angle, there is no way to adjust the angle yourself.
With the "removable insert" removed, the One S with the Case-Mate Tough attached, fitted perfectly well , as well as the TPU gel case. I imagine that this will work with the majority of cases, maybe a few exceptions i.e. some of the Otterbox cases. I honestly was not expecting the One S to fit with the Tough case attached.
Case Mate Tough attached to the S and placed in the Cradle:
TPU Gel Case attached to the S and placed in the cradle:
The One S "naked" and placed in the Cradle:
I know for some other cradles, cases attached are a big problem, some only work with the thin hard plastic cases attached.
I was a bit disappointed in some ways when I found out that the One S micro USB port was on the side as I really wanted a cradle that would keep the device vertical whilst charging at the same time (you can get cradles like this for the S etc. however, it isn't as convenient as simply just plug in and remove, you have to place the device in the cradle and then plug in a USB cable thus a bit more hassle is involved then). However, in some ways it is actually better that the USB port is on the side regarding cradles as it now means that you can watch TV via TV catchup app, watch a film/TV episode or play a N64 game using a PS3/X360 controller WHILST charging at the same time and in landscape mode, so I have no complaints about the USB port on the side
Conclusion:
I am very impressed with this desktop cradle overall, I knew that I would like it before I even got it today going by the pics etc. however, having used it now, I am even more impressed.
The only thing, which I would have liked is for there to be no gloss finish at all as generally glossy plastic is rather cheap looking IMO and the cradle most certainly does not feel cheaply made.
It does exactly what is required but goes one step further in regards to the "removable insert", which allows me to use the cradle even when I have the Case Mate Tough attached to the S.
It is maybe a bit on the expensive side (£17.95), however, looking at what else there is on Mobile Fun and other sites, there doesn't appear to be anything that competes with this cradle when it comes to the looks/build and most importantly allowing mobiles with cases attached to be docked, whilst being able to charge at the same time.
The only "real" con of the entire "package" was the packaging itself Just need to be a little bit more careful.
Pros:
Stylish Look
Perfect fit even with a thick case attached to the S
Good Build Quality
Cons:
Packaging has sharp corners/edges
Glossy Finish on the front
Thanks for reading and I hope this review has been helpful and as always any questions, ask away

Does the phone go into dock mode when plugging it in?
Is it easy to insert or do you have to fiddle with getting the port aligned with the connector? (scratching phone, etc)
Thx

Nope, the phone doesn't go into dock mode.
It is pretty tricky the first few times, but you get use to it and it is no longer a problem then Easy placing the mobile in and to remove it, you have to use one hand to hold the dock down when removing the phone.
No scratches around the USB area, only on the edges of the inside.
Thanks for the reply
Trying to find a phone that is as convenient as my N1 when it comes to docking and cradles. It's just hard to beat phones with POGO pins. Wife and I have a bunch of docks; alarm clocks, work charging and music stations - never need to mess with a USB unless debugging.

Maybe the one X or galaxy nexus would be better choices then?
what rubber case is that you're using? great review btw.
I posted the names of the two cases in the review....
Case Mate Tough and TPU gel case.
Although I recommend the TPU diztronic matte case over those two
Thanks
sorry for overlooking that detail. i'm digging the casemate tough with the textured grip and increased protection. i've used the diztronic case for last few months and while it's thin as well, it also lacks grip and i've been close to dropping my phone so many times.
No problem
Yeah, the diztronic matte case isn't great for grip at all really
I think the tough case is the best when it comes to protection as it looks good, feels great and whilst it might not be as good as the ballistic, otterbox etc. for pure protection, it should handle most drops perfectly well.
The rock quicksand case is very highly rated, suppose to have great grip, however, it doesn't protect the phone as well as the others and there is no protection for the top or bottom.
Has anyone tried this case with a HTC One S with the Seidio ACTIVE® with Metal Kickstand??

Anyone found a car mount that works well for the V10? I don't care for the suction ones. I prefer ones that attach to the consol instead. Thanks.
mine looks like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Car-CD-Slot-Mount-Bracket-Holder-for-iPhone-Cell-Phone-GPS-Rotatable-/311212169712?hash=item4875b0d9f0:g:S0QAAOSwiCRUicp~ But i have a F150 and don't really have a standard clip for the vent like in my wife's car.
Mountek Snap2 is probably the best all- around unless you need the cd player.

I put mine inside the cover and it's fine. Most cases are really thick in the back and the magnet doesn't work very well. It actually works really well without a case. If you do get a case make sure it's a thin case otherwise the magnet won't stick.
Magnetic mount
I've been using a magnetic mount I purchased at best buy. It came with a large and small plate. I currently have the large plate under the battery covert right on the battery and the bulge is minimal if not non existent. Fits perfectly and sticks to my holder without issue. Magnetic is the way to go lately with all the different size phones, plug layouts are different between manufacturer and the ability to go landscape or portrait at will is a must now.
I bought a cheap TPU case for $1.29 that I keep in my car just for mounting. I place the magnet between the phone and the case.
I like the mountek snap mounts, but I don't have a cd-player slot. Well, I do, but it's behind a 7" display. Does anyone know of a good magnetic mount that doesn't mount with suction cup, cd player, or vent? I'm hesitant to use the ones that mount on the vent, as I'm worried it may break off part of the vent, not sure if this really would be a problem though, just seems like it could.
Xtremeguard has a couple car mounts and right now running a 90% off code "GIANT90" sitewide free shipping. I have the smaller suction cup one, it shakes with big phones. I might try the vent and longer neck versions.

I put magnet inside behind cover Work perfect
I just grabbed the braketron si magnetic mount from best buy. I like it because it has an adjustable stand below the magnet to help keep the phone steady. It's a suction mount, but it's the soft sticky kind of suction. I used a damp cloth on a sloped part of my dash and it hasn't moved since I mounted it. The larger plate fits inside the back cover perfectly and the mount holds the phone very securely. I even tested it on some really rough roads locally and the phone never moved.

I have a magnetic one. It keeps things clean. It goes into the air vent, and you can put magnet (included) on your case or something and the phone snaps in. It has been convenient with any phone. V10 or note 5. I'd highly recommend it.

There's a warning on the manual that says not to use the product with any phones that use flip cases that can cause the device to go to sleep like the G3, M8, and a few others.
I know you can probably turn off the case detection in the settings, but makes me kinda iffy on it.

If I place the phone on the mount off centered to the right it does lock the screen, but if I center it, I have no issues with the magnet turning the screen off. I just turned off the setting until lg comes out with the quick window case.
I use this one because it's much less of an eyesore than the others.

Koomus CD-Air CD Slot Smartphone Car Mount Holder Cradle
I've tried many brands and styles of Smartphone Car Mounts and have settled on a new favorite the Koomus CD-Air CD Slot Smartphone Car Mount Holder Cradle. If you don't mind using your CD Slot for mounting your smartphone it's a great choice and available on Amazon for $19.99.
It's the small things that really make this mount a pleasure to use compared to other similar mounts. The mount is very secure and extremely easy to use. You insert the end of the mount into your cd slot and you can use the included attachable clips to adjust the thickness of the end for a perfect fit. Its not a one size fits all affair like some of the other mounts I had tried.
The stretchable holder expands from 2.16" to 3.42 to accommodate most phones without a problem it holds my LG V10 and Nexus 6 without a problem. The holder has a rubber bumper on the jaws of the holder to protect the phone from scratching while inserted into the mount. The holder uses a ball joint that allows for 360 degree of movement so you can mount the phone securely in both horizontal or vertical orientation.
Since I use polarized sun glasses I have to mount the LG V10 vertically in order to see the screen with my sunglasses on and I haven't had to worry about the phone falling out of the mount even though the V10 is a very tall phone. The holder jaws have sufficient tension and with the addition of the rubber padding it's made for a slip free installation.
I've saved the best for last the one touch easy mount lever that fits flush with the body of the mount! On other mounts I had tried the mounting hardware hung underneath the mount which partially obstructed the view screen of the head unit mounted in my vehicle. The flush mounted lever on the Koomus doesn't interfere with the on-screen controls of the head unit or the view of the backup camera when operating the vehicle a huge plus.
I don't have any photos of my installation but I'm including a couple provided by the manufacturer. I'm very happy with the Koomus

Thanks for the recommendation, gheymann. I also have polarized lenses on one of my pair of shades but I haven't had to wear them since I got the V10. I was wondering though, is the screen on this phone made of polarized glass - can it not be viewed from certain angles if one is also wearing polarized lenses?
I bought the $60 aluminum/adjustable Craigsdock many years ago for my Galaxy Note 3 and have used that same dock all these years with like six other phones. Best $$ I ever spent.
It's fully height/width/depth adjustable for use with any 5" to 6+" phone.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-s5-note-2-3-4
I got rid of the window mount base years ago and currently use it with a ProClip custom dashboard base:
http://www.proclipusa.com/dashboard-mounts/car-dash-mounts.aspx
:good:
EDIT:
I did forget to mention another thing that makes this dock future proof.
The Micro USB cable is quickly removable/replaceable.
I've used USB 2.0 and USB OTG and Quick Charge 2.0 cables and will now install a USB C cable.
EDIT 2:
Another point to consider is the volume rocker on the Pixel is more towards the middle of the phone, which makes some car docks useless. The Craigsdock car dock grabs the phone by the lower portion, so there is no volume rocker interference to worry about.
wrong plug. that's a micro-usb plug
Right. Nice that he likes the product so much, and supports it, but it won't work with this phone.... So....

lol, the plug is not hard wired. It's removable. Takes two seconds to replace the cable.
I've used a dozen different cables in my dock.
You just remove this one and use a USB C cable instead.
Or even a USB OTG USB C adapter.

I finally bought a Proclip mount for my truck. Should have done that a long time ago instead of using a kind of floppy vent mount for so long. I contacted Proclip about a holder for the Pixel XL when I bought the mount (as the OP knows, you buy the mount for your car and the holder for the phone separately). They said they would have something a few weeks after the Pixel came out. The Craigsdocks looks like an interesting alternative especially with the ability to switch out the cable/USB connector. Other Proclip holders have a USB C connector and cable built-in, but if that cable went bad (as they often do) I think it would be a pain to replace the cable/connector. I am going to take more of a look at that Craigsdock.
Thanks for the tip.
On a side note, Craig makes the best vape mod (oi mod) I have ever used. I have 2. Quality stuff from Craig.
I watched some of the Craigsdocks videos of him making the docks (he is quite an artisan) and contacted him about buying a car dock for my Pixel XL. He said he is machining up a cable/connector holder specific for USB-C. It seems like the holder meant for micro-USB would work fine (just loosen the set screw, slide out the cable/connector, insert a USB-C cable/connector, and then retighten the set screw), but I guess he wanted to make a USB-C specific version of the clamp. I am definitely ordering one when he is ready.
Op, can you post a picture, or explain the set up you are using. I currently have the ProClip adjustable for an iPhone 6s plus, with a lightning to type C module for my Nexus 6p and my Pixel XL ... It works but I'm always changing phones and this interest my. I am specifically interested in how you connected the ProClip base to the CraigDock. I appreciate your post. Thanks.
Don't have the Craigsdocks yet although I noticed the Craigsdocks website now has Pixel XL listed in the menu (although following the link doesn't give more information). When Craig e-mailed me back about working on a USB-C specific cable/connector holder, he said this about mounting it to my Proclip flat dashmount "so basically all you would need is one 1/4" hole drilled through it and put a 1/4" wide course thread bolt from the back into the ball mount, its female threading is 1/4" - 20 tpi". The ball mount is an option if you want to tilt the phone towards you. The phone holder comes with a 1/4" bolt also, but only allows rotating and not tilting. He has a bunch of videos on Youtube showing him making and using the mounts.

I'll try to post up pics after I install the dock again.
I'm still deciding how I want to hard-wire the charger in my car.
But basically, I bought the vehicle specific mounting platform from ProClip/Brodit.
Then superglued that mounting platform to the Craigsdock. I did use a clamp to pressure the two parts together overnight when I glued it.
It's been rock solid for the last year.
But my Craigsdock is the original one, not the one he currently sells.
So my method may or may not work as well for you.
I'd love to have his new dock. Craig, if you're out there... discount one for me and I'll pimp it out for you.
Where and how I bought my vehicle specific ProClip:
http://www.brodit.com/proclip.html
Installation of the ProClip:
ProClip glued to my Craigsdock dock. The dock is the left side and the ProClip is the right side:
Rear view of the dock/mount:
A pic of the mount in my old car, angled for landscape instead of portrait.
You can kinda see how the MicroUSB cable gets installed in the dock.
Ahh, yeah how cool is that. Craig does indeed appear to be working on a Pixel dock.

Thanks for the heads up.
I'll keep checking that link for when he finishes the dock and adds pics & pricing to that page.
I've had mine for like five years maybe?
Wouldn't mind putting it on my motorcycle and getting a new dock for the car.
And yes, the adjustability (for how tight a fit you want) and durability make this dock a good choice for motorcycles.
I don't get it. What makes this dock so good?
I appreciate the thorough post, I will be looking into the Dock, thanks
I ordered mine yesterday and it is on its way to me today (USPS priority). I'll post some pictures of the complete setup when I have everything together.

That depends, what are you looking for in a dock?
Upgradeability?
Flexibility?
Durability?
Well... check, check and check.
Please let me know if I've missed something.

Did you order the S3 dock or the one he's designing for the Pixel?
Very interested in pics, thanks.
I like the old design and am interested in how nice the new one looks.
I wonder if he's willing to sell the old design still.
He's responsive to emails so I could probably just ask.

I ordered the dock for the Pixel. He changed the web page briefly so it showed available and I could order it. He designed the USB-C connector holder around the Monoprice "select Series" cables. It can likely accommodate other C connectors, but since it will fit the Select Series like a glove I ordered a C-C Select from Monoprice. I believe he will ship a Select A-C cable with most orders, but since I have a Belkin USB-C PD charger with the C connector on it I decided to order the C-C cable from Monoprice. Once I get it and try it out, I'll post links to the cable(s).
He is very responsive to e-mails.
She arrived yesterday. Here are a few pictures of it by itself, with naked Pixel XL, and with a RhinoShield bumper. I'll post some pictures when I get it mounted in vehicle.
As it arrives with the optional swivel ball mount. It would normally have a USB A-C cable, but I wanted to use a C-C cable.

Closeup of the mount. The felt on the front surface is a nice touch.
The swivel ball mount
Pixel in the mount. No cable attached yet.
View of the arm and the lower volume button. I originally e-mailed Craig the dimensions of the Pixel XL from bottom to volume button. He said I should have about 1mm clearance. Sure enough. You can also bias up the USB-C connector in the connector clamp so the phone doesn't rest on the bottom of the dock if you wanted more clearance.
Same shot, but with the RhinoShield bumper on.
Back shot with the RhinoShield bumper on.
All done. FYI CZ Eddie, I think if you contact Craig he might be able to sell you a cable/connector clamp made for the C connector that would replace your micro USB clamp. That would probably make things a lot easier and more clean.
You can tell Craig designed the cable/connector clamp around the Monoprice C connector. The stock Google C connector fit in the clamp OK (a little extra room so it wobbles a bit before you tighten it down), but the Monoprice cable fit like a glove. I used this Select Series cable http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13034 Craig would normally ship the Monoprice Select series A-C USB cable with the dock. I wanted C-C so I ordered my own.
The Proclip mount I already had in my truck. You could of course use the mount and sticky tape Craig provides. The Proclip is very sturdy and puts the phone up high where I like it so I stuck with it.
I ran the USB cable through my air vent so I wouldn't have cables draping down my dash. I used a zip tie to hold the cable back at an angle near the bottom of the dock. It is a fairly tight angle, but the strain relief keep the bend spread out fairly evenly.
View from the side showing the optional swivel mount. It doesn't stick out too far from the dash which I think is good.
Vertical position
Horizontal position
EDIT: I had info in here about the cable/connector clamp not going low enough and that put a small gap between the phone and dock only near the bottom of the phone. This morning I was looking at my phone and it hit me...... the Pixels are thinner at the bottom than they are at the top.
@mtucker that looks so good. Nice job!
I finally got my USB C cable and installed the dock.
My Craigsdock is several years old, a first generation product and probably needs a little bit of black touch-up paint.
I'll be routing the cable behind the dash like mtucker did. But I'm holding off till I replace my car stereo with an Ordoid XU4 Android PC and 8" LCD screen. The dash is a PITA to take apart, so I'm waiting till I'm ready to do everything in one shot.
Pics.
Right-angle USB-C connector shaved just a bit to fit in the Craigsdock port.
It's clean.
It's super stable.
It's not going anywhere, no matter how hard I tap on that screen.
Yes, I prefer portrait over landscape.
