WIFI Problem - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, so i have a problem with wi-fi where it either doesn't want to connect, just stays on saved, or it connects and the speed is very slow and it disconnects after a while. This started happening only a week ago i think. It's not my router because other devices work ok. And it wasn't my rom because i had the same rom for a long time, i also tried few other roms and it is the same. I've had baseband 3.0, now i'm on 4.0.1.c7. Can it be the antenna dying or something?

Unfortunately that's not it. As i've told it worked up until a certain point on the same firmware. Also i've tried flashing some today, it's the same.
Sometimes it can't connect, stuck on saved, sometimes it's Connected, no internet, sometimes it's connected and very slow internet.
3G works perfectly.

Then try clean flashing the ROM again...
It doesn't matter if it was working perfectly fine before,a clean flash can solve many issues.

I was on TugaPower, then hyperUnicorns, LineageOS nightly now back to TugaPower again.
For example at the moment i tried connecting, it was Connected-No internet, then disconnected after 5 secs.

Yes, since it started, it never worked normally, no matter what rom or firmware i use.
I'm guessing it's the hardware then.

Go to the preferred Wifi network showing on your mobile and change the IP Settings to 'Static'. Now go to the settings of your Wifi network provider (on a System) & check the IP address they are using. Insert the same IP address in your mobile & save the settings.
Let me know if this works.

Works few seconds, then disconnects, connects again, slow speed etc. Same as DHCP
As i was saying, everything worked perfectly up until a point. Idk if i dropped my phone or something.

Worked for a while, started disconnecting again, slow speed etc.
At this point i'm pretty sure it's the hardware
Edit: Seems to work after hitting the phone a few times. No further comment on this.

Did something work out ? Mine has been failing for over a week now... The only way to resolve the issue temporarily is to reboot the phone...
To specify the issue, I'd say :
1. Most of the time, my phone is wifi connected to my router, but either speed is slow as hell - or absent
2. Sometimes, the wifi status is "connected, no internet"
3. In short bursts, wifi disconnects, enabling LTE, then connects back to wifi, with issue 1 or 2.

i second this! happens mostly when i lock the phone (yes ive checked my settings and thats not the case), i dont believe its hardware because i remember it being on the COS13 bug list, maybe firmware. (After being on jgcaap and facing too many wifi issues i reverted back to stock yesterday, issue still here)

[Q] Wifi won't connect all the sudden?

Hi, so here is my setup:
Darky's v8.0
Setirons 1.5.6
And Ive tried different modems, jk4, jl2, jl3
All of the sudden the other day, my phone stopped connecting to wifi. It will detect the network, then try to connect to it, then just stop and say "disconnected" and my wireless network will say either "remembered" or sometimes "disabled". Ive tried installing all 3 of the modems above, and each has the same problem, making me think it's something else. I also tried forgetting the network, rebooting, deleting the cahce, turning wifi on/off, data network on/off, and airplane mode on/off, and nothing helps. It was a really sporadic event and I've searched far and wide for a solution. Anyone have ideas?
this is what it does: I click "connect", it says connecting-disconnected. Split second change. Then it scans for a second, connecting-disconnected, it only takes a split second to change to disconnected.

I get this problem occasionally. Only thing that can fix it is a reboot.
Interesting, I have tried that. Is there any special trick the the reboot? As in... should wifi be on/off? do you have to "forget" the network before the reboot?
See if your phone can connect to another wifi point. That way you can rule out router issues. I have had issues with my router and wireless phones in the past.

Well, I just tried to connect to a random secured network, threw in a random password, and it would sit on "obtaining IP address" then just switched to disconnected, scanning, and started the whole process over. I just moved, but the problem started before I moved, although I'm still using the same router now.

I had that problem with cognition 2.3b8, then I flashed to perception and the problem went away. May want to try reflashing the original rom and see if the problem goes away.

I planned on flashing a new rom later today, so I will check it out then. It just seems weird, this has happened to me before and it just fixed itself after a couple days... There must be something specific causing it.
Also, I can use MobileAP just fine. I think its weird that I can create a wifi network but can't connect to one.

Try to ensure that you are using the 2.4GHz channel for WiFi, if your router has that and 5GHz.
If you can pair with your router using the WPS button method instead of typing in the security key on your phone, I've found that was more foolproof in getting the phone properly authenticated with the router for network access.

Also, when you connect your phone via WiFi to this router:
1. There are no network problems downloading with a web browser or the Play store
but
2. the WiFi network does not seem to work when an app wants to download data?
The Play store is also an app, so that is why I am asking for clarification of the error symptoms.
Are you running the "stock" operating system, or have you rooted+unlocked the phone to run a custom ROM?

This "ghost wifi" issue as I call it is happening on some devices/roms. I was on synergy r73 for quite a while and would have this issue, fully connected, no data transfer. Toggling on then off would repair it temporarily, but sometimes when trying to toggle, the toggle would just hang for about 15 seconds before shutting it off. Others have reported this too, your not alone. I am currently running Jellybomb which is based off of vrlg7, where as Synergy r73 is based on vrlg1 and I am no longer having the issue. It is possible that this is an issue with the baseband and not the rom as originally thought. You could odin to stock, take the ota and then try the whole thing over again and see if that works, or just flash a rom based on a more current baseband, not just flashing a radio. Again, I have no idea what the issue is, myself and others that were discussing it a ways back never had a clear answer to the issue, but so far what I just explained has worked for me so far.

do you have wifi issues with 4.1.2?

Is anyone having wifi problems when connecting to a wifi network using 4.1.2?on 4.1.1 and below, wifi always worked perfectly. But it has been kinda broken with every 4.1.2 rom i have tried. Am i the only one?i see a lot of people complaining about wifi issues with 4.1.2 but i see no one mentioning this on our device.
what happens with me is that the phone stays in state "obtaining ip adress" for a long time and then proceeds to properly connect. The "avoid poor connections" option is not enabled. anyone know why this is happening? Also, the signal is worse than with previous android versions!

but i have the same router as before and it also happens with my university wifi(and it didnt happen on 4.1.1 and below)! Never had any issues(ever!) with GB, ICS and early JB=/. But for some reason this 4.1.2 messes my wifi.
here is a logcat i took. as you can see the wifi "stuff" begins and then stops. Only after 30 seconds or so it displays the message that the phone is now connected
This could be a rom specific problem or even simply a kernel issue.

not a rom specific problem and also not a kernel issue. Have tried several roms and many different kernels!
Had this issue. Sometimes it doesn't even detect my wifi. Had to reboot the router for it to work. I think this is android-specific on SOME routers.

i always detect wifi networks. rebooting router does not fix this. Also, it makes no sense that it is related to the router since it happens with both my home wifi and my university wifi (and with 4.1.1 and below it worked properly on both my home wifi and university).
Some change must have been made in 4.1.2 for the wifi to behave this way. Anyone can get anything from the logcat i provided?
Also, the wifi connects properly if i set static ip on my phone but i can only do that at home because i have acess to my router. Is there any way i can restore wifi files from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 to make it work properly without having to set static ip?
Same issue here

[Q] wifi and mobile network keeps disconnecting

Hi
i'm having some issues with the radio on my Nexus 5, it startet after i upgraded to 5.0.
I did this by first deleting all user data (i use stock fw, no root), then by flashing the factory images with fastboot.
What happens is that wifi keeps disconnecting very often, like every 2-3mins.
if i turn wifi off, the same dropout happens with the mobile network..
I thought this was just a bug that would be fixed in later releases, so i waited.
5.0.1 OTA popped in and did not fix my issue, so i did a factory reset (read that in 5.0.1 android resets more thoroughly).
Still it keeps disconnecting.
now when 5.1 was released i flashed that image (didn't edit the flash-all.bat file so there was another wipe), it still disconnects.
Can anyone help me diagnose this problem (i can try to do a logcat?) can i flash the old radio from 4.4 safely?
is there anyone having the same problem like me?
I don't have quite those symptoms, but I do have a Wi-Fi problem, ever since 5.0. My Wi-Fi connection drops at random times. You can see the drop outs on the battery page, and it just stops whatever network activity was happening at the time. If I'm using Chrome, I know it's going to fail when the progress bar goes to about a cm then stops. If I toggle Wi-Fi off and back on, or sometimes if I simply wait for about 30 seconds, it works again. With 5.0.1, I was using the 4.4.2 radio, which was a lot better, dropping the connection a lot less often. I hoped 5.1 would fix it, and it's better, but it still happens sometimes.

My problem has, though it is worse on some networks. It's worse on my own home router, for example, which is an Asus RT-N66U running Merlin firmware. It happens less often here at work, but it has happened here. Both of these networks are 2.4GHz only. It happens just infrequently enough that I can live with it, but it's annoying.

Well, i only use wifi at home so i'm not sure.
I've been testing with wifi off at home to rule out wifi, but it keeps disconnecting on mobile network as well.
It doesnt happen during calls, just while browsing etc, using mobile data.
It also keep switching between LTE (with low signal -117dB) and Hsdpa (better signal, -117) so i tried locking it to use only GSM/CDMA, that didn't help either.
Now i tried setting up my old router to try anoteher wifi network, no luck..
Guess i must try kitkat radio, see if that works any better
edit: that didnt work either

I've been trying to isolate this problem forever, and I'm starting to think it is something about my router, after all. Could you possibly post the settings from your Wireless General and Professional tabs in the Merlin firmware?
I now have a perfectly stable phone. Nexus 5 with 5.1.1, rooted, TWRP recovery, Xposed alpha, otherwise stock. I found the source of my Wi-Fi disconnect problems: it was my Belkin WeMo switches! I unplugged them, and I haven't had a disconnect in over a week. I haven't experienced a single other problem with this setup. (knock wood)

I've noticed WiFi problem in my moto g 2015.
My home WiFi is not connecting, it reacts like gone through infinite loop. My home WiFi is having WPA2 protected access.

It would help if we had much more details. A link to a video would be perfect. Does this happen with any other Wi-Fi networks?

Did you manage to resolve your wifi problem?
I bought the Moto G (2015) 2GB RAM / 16GB ROM for my wife and she's having problems with the home wifi. It often says there is a "connection error" and loops to try to connect again and then fails. Her work wifi seems to function ok.
Having read about similar problems with older moto gs, people recommended (1) turning on and off airplane mode. (2) changing channel number of router.
Both sometimes work and sometimes don't. But it's not really a permanent solution. I'm a bit reluctant to do a factory reset and reinstall everything if it won't resolve the problem. The device came with the latest firmware already installed (5.1.1) and I haven't rooted or unlocked bootloader so should be a pretty clean install.
Anyway, would like to hear that factory reseting could resolve this issue or not before trying.
Thanks for any advice!
Mine does it every now and then. I just unplug my router, wait a minute, plug it back in, and then it connects.

Yes. It works for me too. But what happens if you're on a public or work wifi where you can't reset the router? It doesn't really seem like a long term solution.
Is this a standard problem with this phone? Anyone else have a similar problem or preferably a solution?

Yeah resetting other than home router is not the answer. It's an Android issue as all my phones do it from time to time. I haven't been able to figure it out. The other "fix" if you can't reset the router is try going into the Wi-Fi settings, and forget the network/name, and then add it back as new. It takes longer, but it could work for you. That's how I get around it when connecting to work when it won't auto connect.
Hi, I had also faced the same problem with a open wifi network which is free for 15 mins ..
Other than that one ..i had every router connected to my phone..
I was thinking the problem is not in your phone.. It's in router which might be old
Because old routers will have 802 a or something which are in compatible to some phones..
Or the router is not allowing your phone to get connected.. As your phone is latest and it has advanced protocols inscribed in it..
Do one thing.. Shed some light on this now :
1) router model (if known to you)
2) phone models which got connected to that router and it's operating system version (like 5.1.1)
And there is also one more point.. I found our phone might find problems connecting to 5ghz band router ..while it works fine for smaller routers like 2.4ghz
We can decide when you dig some info about the questions I mentioned...
We will get answers
Just turn off wifi and then turn it on it will fix the problem

My router is a netgear CG3100Dv3 (using WPA2-PSK [AES] encryption) and uses 2.4 GHz. I don't think it's the router's fault though because I've had many friends connect with a variety of phones and none of them have had the problem before. I currently have a Oneplus One (android 5.0.2) and have used a Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy S (1) on this router without problems. Maybe it's a problem with android 5.1.1 as I guess not many of my friends have it yet. I've written to motorola support but they still havent got back to me.

Strange. I've never had a problem before with wifi. Maybe I've been lucky until now. Yep - have tried forgetting and reconnecting to wifi signal. Again, a temporary solution that will quickly become irritating when there shouldn't really be a problem for such a simple operation.

Just turn off wifi and then turn it on it will fix the problem

It's a temporary solution but a pain in the arse if you have to reset the router every few hours. And as I said before, what happens when you can't connect to a router which you can't reset? (i.e. public, work)
Change the router's channel, then refresh the wifi in the phone.

Firstly i agree that our Moto G has some kind of issue with some routers.. but there will be solutions for them from the ROUTERS POINT OF SIDE to make it work
i have read about your router .. Things i suggest (if you have already done them then let me know )
1) your router has option to change MODE to get speeds more than 150mbps.. try changing that 802.11 MODE , restart your Phone and Router and also keep CHANNEL to AUTO , try changing the security WPA to others also..
2) your Wifi of your phone will have a MAC address , copy that and paste in your Router to allow this device..
i am still finding info on your problem..
the reason why i think your Router can solve the problem is : i had once read about 802.11 b/g/n/ac types.. i am getting a doubt that they are the ones causing the problem.. if you are aware of it
have a look at this bro once : http://www.smartmobilephonesolutions.com/content/cant-connect-to-wifi-on-android-smartphone
in this he said that Wifi fix apps can solve the easy problems..:highfive: , hope you find solution

Hmm. That doesn't sound promising. Will they sort it out with the next firmware update? Are motorola even aware there is this problem?

Ok. Will change channel to auto mode. It was already on "up to 300 Mbps". Will also put MAC addresss in the router.
However this still relies on having access to the router. What happens when you don't have access. If this is going to happen on many routers then I prefer to return the phone and buy one which never has this problem.

I'll give a wifi fix app a go to. But they just seem to automatically delete known wifi SSIDs and passwords.
Another option would be to root and install new ROM and radio, but would prefer not to.
It seems like a lot of Nexus 5 users on 5.1.1 are having wifi problems too:

Anyway, thanks for you advice!
Just a quick update if there is anyone else reading this thread with a similar problem.
I changed the channel mode to auto and that has seemed to fix the problem. The moto g seems to connect without problems now. I didn't enter the MAC address nor used a "wifi fix" app so far.
Fingers crossed...
I have the same problem. Wifi just stops working and had a ! Symbol beside the wifi icon. I have probably had a 100 phones and devices connected to this router without a problem. I have changed a bunch of settings the router and it didn't help.
Disabling wifi off then on works, but that is no solution. I will try anther Rom or kernel. I am on resurrection 5.1.1

My problem was slightly different in that the phone wouldn't even connect to the wifi signal. It would cycle continuously between "connecting" and "authentication error".
Does it work with other routers?

Thanks for your help! I'm still a little wary that the phone will have problems in the future on other routers, but it's a good enough fix for now. Hopefully a later firmware update will sort it out.
Unfortunately, my wife took the moto g on a business trip last week and could not connect to any wifi signals (her colleagues did not have a problem).
Not sure what to do now. I'm in contact with motorola support but they don't have any suggestions yet (apart from blaming the router - which has never had a problem with any other devices!)
