My 1st HUAWEI - General Topics

Getting [root] access on a mobile device is like going to a rave (without a pass-out)...
I hope that this thread will become more understandable as it progresses.
The aims herein is to seek, gain and give knowledgeable experience in the procedures of gaining [root] access to an
alien' phone a.k.a the HUAWEI Y3(30??)
So, it begins;
A fascinating device/phone. This Huawei has very limited memory. 6gb, I think..
Ofcourse, I intend to serve up a micro SD. But, Until root is established I hardly see the merit!
It is running a HUD called EMO (sic). Which is pretty darn cool, thanks in volume to the rainbow light!
Yeah, a rainbow light... It can be triggered to do morse code, and has a kindve 'laser-light' function when you play mp3s.
The stock display (mines simplified) looks like Windows UNO. You know, the unnoficcial bastard of Microsoft and Mattel?
BastAD isn't a swear right? I mean this is science, aftrerall..
This is such an alien device!
Or atleast it is very unique in comparison to all others that I have had.
Just acquiring the build model has been a trial of translation. LUA-***. I can't remember the last, it seems uninportant however because it's actually a Y3.
So, a few programs have been added to the traSHTOP (pc) for HUAWEI interface. Though I have not yet had success in Hsuite as of yet. I'm alerted to a MTK something something xx driver issue which will be homework. I'll be starting, here/

Why do today what you can do tomorrow?
Is there a logical reason this device is not included in search sitemap?
What button do I press for techcopy in blitzball? Blessings of Uevon be upon you!:cyclops:

ZX Spectrum emulator on Raphael

I am interested in buying the Raphael.
As i enjoy playing the ZX Spectrum emulator for ppc
(Pocket Clive, Fuse for ppc), i would like to know if anyone has tried this emulator with the Raphael....
Is the Raphael's keyboard working with the emulator??
Is the lack of hardware keys causing problems???
Is the emulator slow???
Thank you in advance for every answer.....
It actually runs pretty well. You cant use the hardware keyboard though; sliding it out causes it to hang rather than flipping it into landscape. I guess it only supports portrait. Unless you want to do some programming in BASIC though, the onscreen keyboard is good enough to navigate menus etc. The only hardware buttons you need are UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT and FIRE, so the buttons on the front are good enough if a bit close together.
I've got 5,090 games so I'm gonna have some fun with this. I'd suggest you install to storage card as the only directory you can use for roms is in the path it creates itself in Program Files, so obviously better where you have more space.
So in answer to your questions:
1. No, the hardware keyboard does not work
2. No, the lack of hardware keys does not cause a huge problem
3. No, it runs 100%, not too slow (nor too fast, and sound emulation is spot on too)
For anyone else who wants to try it, it's HERE
I would share my roms too, but I think this would be deemed as warez as I payed for them from HMV years ago (£10....bargain!) and also there's always that stipulation that if you download the ROMs you must delete them after 24 hours unless you either own the original game or bought the ROMs, (and therefore the respective license(s)).
Your answer was quite enlighting....although quite dissapointing...
I was dreaming of playing again my Zenobi adventures without using the stylus...
Anyway, do you find the on screen keyboard any better or larger in VGA screen -that the Raphael supports- than any previous 320x240 ppc screen??
Thanks again...
P.S. Have you tried the scummvm???
Does the keyboard work?
Any problems regarding the lack of hardware keys in the front????

Oh, that one again.. it's not true, you know.
Unless the game/application/product have been put in the public domain, made available as freeware, or is available as a demo/shareware/trial, or you own the license (as you mention) then downloading said product for any amount of time is technically piracy, regardless of if it is for 24 hours or not. The fact that it is "abandonware" does not mean it legal to download ROMs, even for "trial" purposes.
But isn't it OK to download and "try" ROMs for 24 hours? (MAME ROM FAQ)
I know you're not talking about MAME ROMs in this case, but the principles of copyright still holds. I also know you're not condoning piracy - just thought it worth mentioning this about the perceived legality of downloading copyrighted material for 24 hours.
So here I am coming to see what is new in "Raphael land 2008" and find someone is nearly as far back in personal computing as I was when I started. A ZX Spectrum Emulator!!!!
Hey - anyone got a ZX80 emulator?
If I can find the cassette tape backup - and if it still is readable - I have an old "Star Trek" game I wrote long time back. The stars twinkling outside the bridge of the Enterprise's view screen were my stellar achievement....
Mind I actually used to do statistical analysis in SOFOR (Southampton University's variant of Fortran IV) sitting in London at two in the morning because my computer budget lasted longer in the middle of the night. And I could actually get a console - instead of having to punchcard it and run it on a teletype terminal - that was an added bonus! Thirty years ago in 1978 to be precise.
I used scummvm with some success on my Wizard, Artemis & Tytn II, but as far as I am aware it doesn't support the hardware keyboard. I had to map the on-screen keyboard to a hardware button so I could use it while I was in game. Then again, that could have just been the Artemis as it has no hardware keyboard. Can't quite remember to be honest. Have to say I haven't tried it on the Touch Pro yet.
The Z80 keyboard in PocketClive is rather small too.
And one final thing about the legality of ownership of roms, as I said, I paid for my spectrum roms so I'm safe there. I do not condone illegal downloading of roms. Always believed you could 'legally' test them for 24 hours though. That's a new one on me.

GPS software with Speed Logging and Replay

I'm trying to find a gps app to run on my Raphael that is capable of recording/logging a trip including timestamps.
I want to be able to replay the trip precisely, preferably on the phone, but if absolutely necessary I'd be willing to replay it on a laptop computer (I have a macbook pro and am running windows vista in a virtual machine) and logically I can replay it from a website as well.
Specifically, I want to be able to replay this in a courtroom in front of a judge, but I don't need to make a grand show of it (thus the reason I prefer replaying from the phone rather than carrying in a laptop).
Any advice would be great. I've considered writing my own app for this, but I really need to be able to replay the trip with graphical maps visible, which makes it more difficult to do. I've got TomTom installed already (which doesn't have this feature built-in as far as I'm aware).
tracking
I have not found a software which does what you are expecting, so I have acquired a TRACKSTICK PRO which does all what you require including tracing the trip on google earth!!
Hope this help
Chris from snowy Chamonix (France)
A completely new device, especially one without it's own ability to navigate would just add to an already excessive bunch of cables and take up a valuable power plug.
I can't figure out where or how to purchase one. The "get it now" button just takes you to a form to submit for them to call you back...This and the fact that it claims to be a "low-cost" solution makes me think that they aren't very interested in dealing with single unit sales.
Thanks for the advice, it's just not what I had in mind.
TrackMe might be what you are looking for.

This looks pretty good I think. At least it's great for tracking and exporting, at least a little easier to work with than GpsGate which appears to only do NMEA sentences and a few file formats that nothing else reads. But this still leaves me trying to find the best way to present it.
I'd still like to be able to do sort of a playback of the trip rather than just data points on a map...and I'm still holding out hope for demonstrating the trip from my phone, but I'm starting to realize that none of the major GPS nav apps seem to have this feature, or at least I haven't found proof that they do. I think iGo might have a record/playback feature, but i haven't been able to verify.

[Q] REQ Darts App

Hey Folks,
I love playing darts but I´m really tired of counting the scores the whole time...
Does anyone of you know an app that can do this for me and my mates? It would be great if this app offers different gametypes such as 501, 301, cricket and so on.
Hmmm, it shouldn't be too hard to create an app that can do this (if you've got Visual Studio, maybe an express edition might be enough). After all isn't scoring in darts just multiple rounds of subtraction (with... a "logic" step at the end to prevent a negative score)?
Heh, correct me if I'm wrong since my only exposure to darts has been GTAIV
Although it'd be awesome if the background was an image of a blackboard and the numbers written in chalk (been playing too much GTAIV I spose).
EDIT: When you say "501, 301, cricket" do you mean different dart game types or different sports altogether since I know that cricket is a different sport but not what 501 and 301 are.
EDIT2: Nevermind, good old google revealed that 501, 301 and cricket are indeed all dart game types.
EDIT3: Heh, kinda forgot to answer your original question - there are actually quite a few however they are mostly paid apps and I'm not sure about compatability with WM6.5, but this is what I've found (I bascially just googled for "dart score WM"):
Someone said (http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/264953/darts-scorer-program/#entry0) that this one crashed (though its free): http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-the-count-v1-0.html but the link appears broken.
This seems to be an online scoring system: http://uniscore.unicorn-darts.com/
Another one here (paid): http://download.cnet.com/Dart-Scorekeeper/3000-2056_4-10955810.html
I'd like a app like this . I've got visual studio but not sure where to start . I'll give it ago .

Heh, was supposed to give it a go myself but I've become a bit too busy recently.
Anyways what you'll have to do is to install the Windows Mobile 6.5 SDK then you'll be able to build applications for it. Ummm, not sure where I found the instructions I used but this should do: http://www.smartmobiledevice.co.uk/HowTo/DeployToWM65
I assume you know how to use Visual Studio to make VB.net/C# applications. Its pretty much the same process, except you'll have to be smart about how much space you use (mobile phones have small screens )
You'll need to have VS2008 or VS2005 since VS2010 apparently doesn't support anything other than WP OS 7 (when it comes to mobile OS development, AFAIK).
I actually wanted to try making a nice "graphical" app, say use an image of a blackboard and have the letters drawn on with chalk (just like in GTA4). But from googling around it doesn't seem possible to do (at least not without building to WP7 since you can use silverlight/expression blend there to make all sorts of pretty things).
EDIT: Finally decided to give it a good bash. Still have to work out how I'm going to code the 'meat' of it i.e. the game scoring bit. Probably going to use a loop to constantly subtract - not sure if this will work for the cricket game type.
I must say feature creep is a big problem. At first I was not going to bother having customisable "names" but for some reason I went ahead and coded it (and it sure was a pain to do so).
Now I'm thinking of having a save/load feature so that you can save a game halfway through or load a previously completed game... but I really don't think I will, so make sure you finish your games (I might add a "custom starting score" feature so that if you remember who had what score, you could resume).
Ok, decided to make a new post (bump!) since I've got something reasonably stable to release.
So here it is, along with a screenshot. I've removed the options screen from the previous version since it really wasn't doing that much. Oh and I haven't programmed the "Cricket" game type yet since it seems alot more complicated than simply substracting scores.
I've also gone and changed the application icon from the previous version.
Heres some other things which I've picked up during my testing:
Known Issue 05: If you press the Windows button while running 'Dart A Score', it will take you out of the app. Press the "X" to return/bring Dart A Score back into focus.
Known Issue 06: If you press the Home or Back buttons while running 'Dart A Score' it will take you out of the app. Use task manager to "swtich" back.
Known Issue 09: If you close 'Dart A Score' via the task manager, you may not be able to relaunch it. Softreset your phone [not sure why, anyone?]
Known Issue 11: After selecting who starts the game, you cannot easily go back since the game asks you to enter the score for the first turn immediatley. Either enter a turn or enter nothing (get an error) to see Form 3/Main game and then press the "Back" softkey. Done by design. [may reimplement the options screen with a toggle for this]
Known Issue 12: The game does not detect a winner immediatey (score of 0). When a player reaches the score of 0 you press the "Next turn" button for the game to detect it. [will have to fix this in a later version, maybe]
Known Issue 13: The buttons on the dialouge box, that pops up after the game has detected a winner, do nothing. These controls are yet to be programmed. Press "OK" or "Cancel" on the dialouge box then press the "Back" softkey to start a new game. [yep, gonna have to implement this too]
Known Issue X: The keyboard does not automatically switch to numeric mode when the user is asked to input a score. [don't think I can fix this as it requires the use of "native code" (I think)]
Possible future features:
00: Implement a check so that only valid dart scores are possible. Probably not.
00: Implement custom names with persistant storage (i.e. write out/read in from a text file). [Going to be alot of work]

[Q] Help me pick a phone. Please.

(long post warning...I'm placing the summary first for those who don't care to read the whole thing)
***
In summary, I want a mobile platform that I can tweak until I get it exactly as I like it; that will sync with Windows desktop and server platforms (this is a strong preference, not a "must"; upon which I own things and don't have to worry about them being stolen or broken; that doesn't tell everyone and their mother where I go and what I'm doing; and on which I can listen to Sirius radio; and to which I can transfer data back and forth via USB without any permission based cloud interface. It must also be compatible with Slingplayer software and I have a strong, strong, preference for a slideout QWERTY keyboard, but I'd sacrifice that if I have to for the above functionalities. I'm currently on ATT, but it doesn't have to be that way
***
I am thinking about purchasing a new phone. But the market is a bit more complicated than when I purchased my current phone (HTC Diamond), so I hope that you guys can give me some advice.
I have been a Windows Mobile user since 5.0. What I loved about WM is that I could come here and read about the various hacks, mods, and custom roms and generally find something to address any problems I had, or find a way to modify the phone to meet my preferences.
I love the mobile version of Office and I use it constantly for work purposes. I especially like being able to sync outlook contacts on both phone and device, and that I can make presentations from the phone, and can open and manipulate Word and Excel.
I was also using SiriusXM 6 by tcbush over on Geekstoolbox to listen to satellite radio. Unfortunately, Sirius has taken down their legacy servers that streamed content to third party providers. So it does not appear that I can listen to satellite radio any longer via my mobile device.
It is this turn of events (Sirius radio) that is my main motivator for seeking a new phone. I could listen to Sirius via the web, but that requires a Flash player and I can't find a version of flash for WM 6.1. I have both Opera Mini and IE. So, if any of you know a way for a WM 6.1 device to listen to Sirius, you will have solved my immediate problem and saved me some money. I would really appreciate that.
But on the larger scale, I know that one day I will have to replace my beloved Diamond. Her slideout QWERTY is starting to jiggle, there are a few scratches on her beautiful face even though she hasn't gone a moment without a case and screen protector. Every now and again her D-Pad loses its way, and I have to reboot. Alas, I fear the end is near. *sigh*
So, in looking over the current landscape, I see three options: iphone, Android, and WM7.
Apple products to me are out for personal preference reasons.
That leaves Android and WM7.
Problem 1:
I enjoyed my prior experience of owning a WM phone supported by a network of generous, friendly developers who found ways that we could modify our phones to our hearts' content. I also like the fact that I own my phone and all its content. Once I install or tweak something, then that's it unless I decide to change it.
But the current market seems to be based on a top-down control model. From what I've read, owning a phone with the current tech is like owning a home on leasehold property or in a HOA: You pay full price for ownership but you do not enjoy the rights of control normally associated with that ownership. It seems that the devices are locked, difficult to unlock, find ways to re-lock, and that a Nanny-server may at times uninstall or disable software that it doesn't like.
I just don't get it. Has the culture embraced a model where a user pays a provider only to be told by that provider what he can and cannot do with the property he has purchased?
Of course, my perception of these issues could be incorrect. I recently went back to school and have unplugged from most external things. I haven't been following the "insider info" on xda for nearly two years. If I'm wrong, please tell me.
Problem 2:
User tracking. Sounds Orwellian.
I get it that the cell provider can locate you. I understand the technology reasonably well for regular Joe, and I understand that the network needs to know where you are. But until recently, the cell provider could not release those records without a warrant or some emergency confirmed by law enforcement like a lost person, etc. I actually worked with Sprint in conjunction with the police to attempt to track a stolen phone. However, it now appears that the manufacturers themselves and many app developers are bypassing the law by tracking users without their consent. Am I right on this?
I've read a number of articles on the Apple and Android tracking problems - generic apps tracking you and reporting your movements to Apple, Google, etc. Apps turning on the mic or camera at intervals and tracking your surroundings or conversations. Route these concerns through the awfulness of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Patriot Act, and the fact that both the post-digital presidential administrations (Bush II and Obama) seem intent on eroding what remains of our privacy, and it makes me uncomfortable. To make it worse, Google and Zuckerburg are both in bed with the Obama administration, and stories of their privacy infractions are epidemic.
Yet none of the progs I use on my WM 6.1 device use tracking (that I know of). So, in a very short time, it appears that the culture of mobile communications has gone from an ownership model with Constitutional protections to a free-for-all where you essentially pay big brother to track you.
I have heard many of my younger friends who have grown up in the big-government era use the default: "If you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to worry about." But that's exactly backward. The law presumes your privacy and allows infractions only after due process. The current culture seems to presume lack of privacy, and treat privacy-seekers as an anomaly. And the tech seems to reflect the culture rather than the law.
Am I crazy? Even if I am crazy, is there a way to block this tracking? And, if so, does Android or WM7 better lend itself to blocking this tracking?
Problem 3:
USB data transfer.
WM7 doesn't support smart cards. But, the devices seem to have adequate on-board storage for my needs. However, from what I've read, I'll need to use Zune (on WM7, don't know about Android) to move data back and forth. Is that correct?
I currently use Windows Mobile Device Center to transfer files back and forth via USB or Bluetooth, and I really want to keep that functionality.
Thank you if you have read this far. And, given those criteria, what are my best options?
Droid X2. Get it.
Droid X2
Droid X2. Get it.
+1
Thanks for the responses. I've done a bit of research on the phone you recommended, and some research in general. I really need to spool back up
It looks like there are apps out there like WhisperMonitor that will help with my privacy concerns. Actually, it looks like there are Android Apps to address most of my concerns.
I'll keep researching that to determine how much functionality I'll have to sacrifice. And I appreciate the responses. Love the dual core structure of this phone. From what I've read, the benchmarks don't differ too much from single core phones, but it looks like the dual core really helps with load distribution and multi-tasking.
It will be hard to leave Windows...been with it since it was Pocket PC 2000. But atm, it appears that Android may work best for me.
I agree Droid X2, although VZW is expensive, its the best network
Off the basis of wanting a slide out QWERTY and Windows Phone 7, I would go with the HTC Arrive for Sprint. You still have Windows Phone, you can get Sling Player from the Marketplace, and it has a slide out QWERTY that when it slides out, angles the screen for better typing the way I look at it.
samsung galaxy s2
or atrix
If you QWERTY I'd wait till my4g slide if it launches with s-off. I don't imagine you'd be keeping the os in tact.
The g2 is also a beautiful phone. Amazing specs for the good hardware.
T-Mobile is also cheapest, I find, of the four carriers.
The epic 4g seemed nice. Hummingbird (Samsung 1ghz processor) is very nice and has a great gpu.
If you're looking to use google talk video chat, avoid nvidia tegra 2 chips.
Google's suite of software is pretty sweet. Google docs works nice, and there's an app for that.
As long as you download from android market you're good from malware. (If you do get it from market, google does pull the app from the store AND your phone, that's the only time I heard them doing this, and that was once instance.)
Besides... Supporting your developers is a great thing.
Did I miss anything?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
IMO almost any of the android phones would work for what you have in mind. As you pointed out in your follow up post there are apps out there for your privacy concerns. I've had a Moto Droid and now the HTC Thunderbolt. Both have been synced with my works exchange servers with no issues, google apps work great with Office docs, and the available roms and other customizations are almost endless.
Also, don't get hung up on a QWERTY keyboard. I swore I would never have a phone without one, but now that I do I actually don't really miss it.
Edit:
USB data transfer - very simple to do with android. Install a driver for the phone and then connect to your pc with a USB cable. Your pc will recognize the sdcard as removeable storage. Just select it in My Computer and drag and drop anything you want to move like you would for moving any file around in Windows.

[Q] SM-P900 'Red Underline' Spell Check?

IMPORTANT UPDATE: I HAVE RESOLVED THIS ISSUE BY DOING THE FOLLOWING:
1) Root the SM-P900 using ODIN. (it's a breeze to do - just follow the directions!)
2) Install TWRP recovery and then do a full TWRP backup of your device.
3) Download & Install the new "Hyperdrive Note Pro 12.2 KK RLS1.1" ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-pro-12/development/rom-hyperdrive-kk-rls1-tab-s-t2986949
Follow the directions for installing this ROM very closely. As recommended, FULLY WIPE your device - everything except the external SD card - BEFORE installing the new ROM.
4) Download the AOSP "MAIL" APK and "Exchange Services" APK from here: *SEE NOTES BELOW
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/exchange-services/exchange-services-6-2-1158763-apk/
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/email/email-6-3-1218562-apk/
These are "Exchange Services 6.2-1158763" and "Email 6.3-1218562", respectively. (These are the last stock, Android versions before the forced upgrade/merge to Gmail)
5) Install (side-load) the Exchange Services APK and then Email APK - from whatever folder you downloaded the files to.
* NOTES:
A) Side-loading is necessary because the Play Store will recognize that you have an SM-P900 and won't allow the install. It has nothing to do with compatibility, but rather agreements made between Samsung and Google (and likely Apple, as well), to prevent you from doing this.
B) Replacing the Samsung Email with AOSP Email is required for a complete fix because the Samsung app seems to side-step the re-enabling of the red-underline spell-check. In other words, your new, working spell check will work nearly everywhere - except inside the stock Samsung Email app!
C) These are NOT the most recent versions of Exchange and Mail, but they are the last ones before GMAIL swallowed MAIL - and I prefer the stock AOSP MAIL. If you install a higher version, you will be forced to 'upgrade' to the GMAIL app during installation. It's up to you, of course.
I'M SURE YOU WILL BE AS HAPPY AS I AM - FINALLY!
PLEASE DONATE TO THE DEVELOPER, sbreen94 - HE'S DONE SOMETHING REALLY GOOD AND INVESTED A LOT OF TIME FOR A VERY ESOTERIC DEVICE - THE P900 - WITH A SMALL USER-BASE.
THE ROM PROVIDES MUCH, MUCH MORE THAN A SPELLING-CORRECTION FIX - THAT'S JUST MY THING. OUT-OF-THE-BOX, THIS ROM IS STOCK TOUCHWIZ - EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE USED TO, INCLUDING FULL S-PEN SUPPORT AND ALL THE SAMSUNG APPS (OR WHICHEVER ONES YOU WANT - YOU CAN CHOISE DURUNG JNSTALL).
HOWEVER, IT 'UNLOCKS' TW AND ALLOWS YOU TO TWEAK MANY VISUAL AND FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS, TO YOUR LIKING. AS THE DEVELOPER SAYS ABOUT THE ROM...
"Touchwiz how I think it should be: The latest Samsung Tab S Software features as well as a Fully Customizable User Interface on the fly as well as excellent performance and battery life."
LASTLY, BE AWARE THAT THIS ROM IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE SM-P900 NOTE PRO 12.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm desperate! I can type faster and with fewer mistakes on my puny, 5-year-old iPhone 3GS than I can on my HUGE Note Pro 12.2 horizontal keyboard. Predictive text is retarded. I'm tired of fighting with auto-replace. All I want is a little red line under each of my misspelled words, like in the old days - before Samsung crippled Android. I've tried Anysoft, Hacker's, Google,... as Gordon Gecko once said, "different dog, same fleas".
I've stock-rooted the tablet with CF. What next? I'll install any mod or keyboard that does this simple thing. I don't care about the warranty, or if the UI ends up looking like Windows 1.0 and sharp pins jump out at every virtual key-press, puncturing my fingertips as I type - just show me the misspelled words before I click 'Send'!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Pretty sure that apps handle misspelled words like MS Word does using Windows. So you need to find a android word processor that handles spell checking. Maybe someone here has a recommendation for you.
Thank you for your timely reply. In the context of a Windows PC, for example, I would wholly agree with you - that spell check is provided by the host application; however, it seems that in the mobile world, a different approach was taken, with the 'keyboard' providing a unified spelling correction that behaved identically within all applications. This is very evident in iOS, and is well documented as a mysteriously disappearing keyboard option ("Underline Misspelled Words") in fairly recent Samsung distributions of Android. KitKat seems to be where the trouble really started, and some claim that this was among the casualties of the Apple-Samsung patent wars. Placing a red line under an unrecognized word, after the spacebar is pressed or navigating away from it, seems well within the means of a keyboard app. That simple red line is all I'm looking for.
Other (non-Samsung) Kitkat devices appear to still have it....
...Owners of HTC devices, running KitKat, claim to still have the 'Underline misspelled words' option in their keyboard options.
No underlines for you!
I've always understood that if I failed to ‘fix' this deficiency, I would have to find an email client with its own spelling correction, "like MS Word does using Windows", either utilizing its own dictionary or one of the two already installed in the tablet - stock Samsung or Anysoft.
Last night, I did some research and landed on ‘MailDroid', having a true spell checker among its many other impessive features. So, I installed the ad-paid version to test it out, fully prepared to fork over $22 for the ‘Pro' version. Email is my main concern, so I was getting excited! Installation was a breeze and within 2 or 3 minutes I was up and running with 2 accounts. And, yes, misspelled words were immediately underlined in red!!! Yipppeeeee!!!! Such a feature-rich, $22 app surely comes with its own dictionary, right?
So, just for fun, I disabled WIFI and tried to compose an email, offline. Then I felt something happening around my feet. I looked down and saw a Google API flopping around on the carpet, gasping for air. It was tring to say something, so I got closer and I could hear it muttering "feed me, feed me".
When I bought this tablet 6 months ago, I just expected it to work at least as well as my 5-year-old Apple 3GS. For a couple of months, I just figured that I wasn't understanding something, that I just needed to find that one setting - it was just hiding somewhere in unfamiliar Android territory. Some folks would say things like "No, it's not like that. Just play with the auto-replace and word prediction settings, or try another keyboard." Well, I did all of that and I'm sorry - Apple does a way better job with automatic correction - even identifying and separating words that are both misspelled and conjoined with errantly typed letters from the bottom row! And the few mistakes that do get past this magic are UNDERLINED IN RED! All applications that require text entry enjoy this unified writing tool... and all of it works even in ‘Airplane Mode' - offline!
There are two installed, accessible, LOCAL dictionaries on my tablet - including stock Samsung... Asking why an email client ]needs to go online for a dictionary is entirely rhetorical - especially when Google is involved.
One of the reasons I bought an Android tablet (and ultimately rooted it) - as well as being a protest vote against Apple's authoritarian control over what I do with MY mobile device - was to gain at least some control over unnecessary permissions, personal data leakage and data mining...
But, it feels like there's a trap - or a beaten-down conformist holding a sign that says "That's just the way it is" - everywhere I step. :crying:
WOW! You did a great job explaining this android dictionary stuff to me. I suspect the app 'Maildroid' didn't have a dictionary installed because of memory concerns. Dictionaries take up lots of space in memory. But, Hey, Word had one for XP in the days when we had very little memory on our machines 10 years ago. So that is really no excuse. A major fault for android devices in my book.
swiftkey keyboard app
I'm desperate! I can type faster and with fewer mistakes on my puny, 5-year-old iPhone 3GS than I can on my HUGE Note Pro 12.2 horizontal keyboard. Predictive text is retarded. I'm tired of fighting with auto-replace. All I want is a little red line under each of my misspelled words, like in the old days - before Samsung crippled Android. I've tried Anysoft, Hacker's, Google,... as Gordon Gecko once said, "different dog, same fleas".
I've stock-rooted the tablet with CF. What next? I'll install any mod or keyboard that does this simple thing. I don't care about the warranty, or if the UI ends up looking like Windows 1.0 and sharp pins jump out at every virtual key-press, puncturing my fingertips as I type - just show me the misspelled words before I click 'Send'!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Swiftkey key board app allows you to use a physical bluetooth key board and still have spell check for the win. AWSOME!!! Get the app at play store for free.
Swiftkey? Are you serious?
Swiftkey? You think i haven't already tried that? And adding a physical keyboard - defeating the purpose of having a physically-simple, stand-alone communication device - to this [email protected]!%& top-of-the-line, most-expensive-Android-tablet-in the-world - that I paid over $800 for with a memory card? Really?
I have a better idea: Invest not one more penny in this mistake, cut my losses, and get a different kind of keyboard - one that comes with a screen and does what it was designed to do, correctly.... and I will not have to patch it up with goofy solutions because it will also have Windows or Ubuntu built-in- at no extra cost! Wait a second... I already own one - this isn't going to cost me a cent!
BTW, since I first posted on this topic, I bought - directly from China, a new Android Kitkat phone - made by Foxconn. I had it in 5 days and Including shipping, it cost me less than $200, has a lovely 5" 300ppi screen, quad-core Snapdragon, all of the sensors known to mankind, a decent camera (front and back), and a real FM radio! Oh, and you know what else it has?!? Oh, c'mon... you know what's coming.... AN INTEGRATED, UNIVERSAL, ANDROID SPELLING CHECKER WITH RED LINES UNDER EVERY SPELLING MISTAKE! I don't need to get a keyboard or pay for more software because it already does what it's supposed to do! I can type an error-free paragraph, with confidence, more than twice as fast on that little phone than I can on this overpriced piece of TouchWiz.
And that is the problem - TouchWiz. Samsung lost a lawsuit and quietly crippled the OS with Touchwiz. Sadly, since this tablet is so overpriced to begin with, not many people bought it, not many accessories have been made for it, and more importantly, no front-end, TouchWiz-replacements have been developed for / ported to it as has been done for nearly every other Samsung device.
Like I said in an earlier post... it feels like there's a trap - or a beaten-down conformist holding a sign that says "That's just the way it is" - everywhere I step.
Problem FIXED!!!
