Anyone willing to try this 7.0 update? - AT&T LG V10

I have both the h901 and h900. I updated my 901 to Nougat, and in the same thread the Dev says it is possible to use on the 900. Anyone tried this or willing to try?? My wife uses the h900, sooooo, if I screw that up I'm sleeping on the couch..

Hi
I tried to use it, but I am unable to boot into any recovery and if I try "and reboot boot loader" the h900 just reboots back into MM.
I am currently on H90021w.

The instructions say to cd into directory /dev/block/bootdevice/... but you need to be root to cd into this directory.

Just for grins I tried to do some adb commands on mine, after adb reboot, I got the android with a red triangle and from that point couldn't issue adb commands..

My ATT H900 is still on lollipop and is rooted. Do you think this would work on my phone and if so, what steps do you think I should follow?

I can't really say. My H900 was rooted and on LP, but I upgraded it back in January. Now when I try to do anything with ADB, nothing works and my PC doesn't even recognize it. My plan was to follow the Dev's directions, only pushing system.img and boot.img.
I may try again later

Waiting for good news... ?

You may want to send a message to the Dev over in the H901 section. Here is what he told me just today. Sounds like you are at the right point according to him.

New OTA Update... Is this Lollipop?

After lunch, I was greeted with the following message on my G2.
I'm not in a position to where I can run this now. Has anyone else gotten this? Is it Lollipop?

Nope. Its D80120e-D80120g_update.
Is there any good updates, or is it just optimizing for T-mobile?
I semi bricked my d 801 had to flash the 20e kdz saw an update available and thought the same thing, is this lollipop? Took the ota realized it wasnt, try to reroot using towel root and install recovery with autorec and it was a no go had to use lg flash tool again to go back 20e just to root
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
Now I cannot get my phone to update to 20g it said 20e is up to date. Why?
So if you're STOCK but rooted with custom recovery and you take this update is it going to soft brick the device or will it just unroot you and be okay?
It will soft brick if you do OTA via phone with 3rd party recovery, it will unroot you if you do it via the pc lg suite
Software, from my past experiences.
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium HD app
If you bricked your phone trying to apply this, the fix is simple if you have TWRP or some recovery that gives you adb shell access.
Just run the following. It will clear out the OTA.
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
Please help
Hey, im definetly new to this but a couple months ago my friend convinced me to root my phone. I used towelroot and I got rooted.
I also got this update and I thought it would be fine to get it. It messed my root up. I factory reset my phone because I couldnt connect to a seperate gmail and play store
I really need help but I really dont know anything about TWRP and recovery stuff , all I had was towelroot, root checker, super su, and freedom. My friend obviously didnt tell me to get anything else.
I cant connect my gmail on startup or anything else, I tried to change a etc/hosts file but I need root which I dont have. If anyone can help please do. I dont have data and my phone is locked other than I can get on wifi and I WAS able to download apps from play store... :crying::crying::crying::crying:
I don't have a link but you can Google stump root, it worked for me to re-root.
Here's the info about the update

Help, H950 flash to stock for OTA Update?

EDIT: Looks like its not MM but some security update, so that sucks but I'd still like to know if anyone successfully got back to stock from rooted 5.1.1
Hi everyone.
I'm trying to find a way to restore my H950 to stock and completely remove any trace of root so that I can install an OTA update. I have tried installing the update with LG PC Suite and LGMobile Support Tool. Both of them say that I am on the latest software (5.1.1 H950v11?). It has been so long since I rooted it that I can't remember what method I used. If anyone has any idea how to flash it back to stock, I'd appreciate the help!
More Details:
I have an H950 (US AT&T) rooted on 5.1.1 and I just started getting an update yesterday saying that I have a system update available. When I tried to download and update, the phone I got an error while the update was still at 0%. When the phone restarted I got the "This phone is suspected in rooting..." Error.
I have tried following this thread [Guide] LG G Flex 2 Stock Firmware (Go Back to Stock) KDZ & TOT Method
but it didn't work. I got the flash utility to run but I still had SuperSU after it flashed my phone and the update still failed due to "Suspect in rooting."
I also tried following this thread [Tool] Easy Restore/Unroot Tool for LG G Flex 2 [09/15/15]!!
but I could not get it to work. The utility just hangs at "Working..."
Anyone successfully used either of these methods on an H950 with 5.1.1 to get back to stock?
Thanks in advance!

You chose cse flash and wiped correct? If you didn't that's why my guide removes everything 100% if you follow it correctly.

CSE flash? Sorry I didn't see that in your guide for the H950 on the AT&T network. I'm looking at your guide and not seeing the CSE Flash unless the LG Tool is the CSE FLash? I had the same problem with SuperSU left over and not able to update. I tried the default Upgrade method, then got a minios OS screen on the the Board method.

It's entirely possible that I am technologically inept, but I am having the exact same issue as the OP. I followed your guide (which was very helpful) for the TOT method, and there is no option to use CSE flash, or at least it's not discussed in the instructions.
I flashed my phone twice using your TOT guide -- pretty sure I followed it to the letter. It completed successfully, but when the phone rebooted, I still had root access. I'm not sure how to unroot this thing so I can receive OTA updates (and maybe sell later on down the road).
Thanks for the help!

Umm, so I found a possible solution on another thread in this forum. Maybe the answer was so simple that nobody thought to mention it. But apparently, you can just remove root access within the SuperUser app; just select "Full Unroot" or "Total Unroot" from settings. Then run this TOT flash, and you should be GTG. I am trying this now and will report as to whether I am successful.

Rooted or not you should be able to go back to stock. And CSE flash is for the kdz method of lg flash tool. Which I didn't realize what model they were needing help with. Also with the H950 LGUP should be used instead of normal flash tool to avoid any issues with the flash tool.

Hmm. Thanks for helping us out. So I am kind of confused. I reinstalled the Tot file using LGUP, and it completed successfully. I selected "REFURB" mode, and it completed successfully. But after it finished, my phone is still rooted. (I verified with root checker.) I just want to go back to stock so I can get OTA updates (and MM hopefully, when/if AT&T releases it). Now my phone won't get OTA updates because it says it's "suspected of rooting." I bought the phone used off of Swappa, so I'm not sure how exactly the original owner rooted it.

At this point you'd be better off waiting for a KDZ of MM when it comes out for the H950. (But remember, root will probably never be achieved for our devices on MM, if that's something you care about).
I remember buying TWO H950s. Both needed the OTA for the latest Lollipop. But despite several hours, several methods, and several hours at the ATT store, I was never able to get OTAs working on either of them. It was impossible.
And supposedly impossible for several other users on XDA, who couldn't get OTAs working for their ATT Flex 2's. So even if you manage to unroot, don't get your hopes high believing OTAs will work.
Did somebody ever able to go back to stock (H950) from rooted 5.1.1? Where did you get the TOT file?

Root 20l w/Dirty Cow

I had been reading up on the Dirty Cow exploit/root method, and it seemed to be compatible with all Android devices, so I took a little chance with my v10, and it worked perfectly! I was on the stock unrooted 20l update, and followed all the steps here: https://github.com/jcadduono/android_external_dirtycow#running
Notes:
-I put our TWRP image and SuperSu zip on the root of my sdcard
-For the very last command, replace 'twrp.img' with the name of your TWRP image file(or change the name of your TWRP fiile to twrp.img ).
-Like it says in the instructions, the phone did look like maybe it bricked at one point, with a strange backlighting on the Tmobile boot screen. It worked out tho!
-My boot loader was unlocked prior to doing these steps

No, it means it's unlockable, but you have to actively unlock it. There should be a thread here somewhere if you haven't done that yet, but it's just boot into bootloader and then 'fastboot oem unlock'
Edit: in case you need it there are great instructions in the v20 thread that I linked in the first post.

The cow method means copy on write...
This means as anything is written it is copied (or flashed or burned; whatever you want to call your desired definition)
You could in theory copy dummy files to a temp location and actually write to a permanent location...
Or am I thinking wrong about it?
If this is a viable option to ALL phones I don't think Google or manufactures could (or would for that matter) actually patch this kind of exploit as it would be super time consuming.
just confirming that Root 20l w/Dirty Cow does work.
Finally got my replacement V10 back, and all is a go again. Stock rooted,
Not sure the novice should try this, as its pretty nerve racking. If you follow the directions correctly it does work great.
Surprised they have closed this backdoor yet,
thanks for being the first to try this on a V10.

I think it's considered a very serious vulnerability that must and will be patched soon. They can't have root access so easily obtained on any device.

You're welcome, and thanks for confirming. That one step where the screen goes weirdly backlit with the Tmo splash screen is a bit nerve-wracking, and so is writing recovery this way, but I was comforted by the fact that you can just tell it to to write to the recovery partition rather than having to know the more technical name/location(not sure if this was possible a few years back?)
Anyway, if I did brick I was gonna go straight to the store and buy a ZTE Zmax Pro for $180 haha.
Which reminds me, does anyone know if there is a way to simply push su into /system once you have the root shell, instead of writing recovery to flash SuperSu? Just curious. I sorta wanted to do that but then I just went with TWRP.

No. The shell has limited access...it has just enough permissions to write recovery and access some things on boot...you need to get it a recovery where you can then flash a zip to install superuser.
Thanks so much for this info, I was actually about to post a new thread to see if root for 20L had been achieved.
But a few questions:
Is there a KDZ/TOT available for 20L? Or is it delivered in update.zip format via OTA?
Is there a way to root 20L without touching system partition? Like, you know, systemless root? I was thinking that maybe it might be possible to flash Magisk from TWRP then install systemless phh Superuser or (less preferable for me) SuperSU. This way I can still take the official Nougat OTA when it hits, without losing root. But the catch is, TWRP needs to be accessible first.
Well, time to sleep for now, it's been a long 3 days, subsisting on Monster and cigs. I'll tackle this when I eventually wake up.
Like the last guy, I've got a million questions on this. I need to find the changelog on 20L to begin with, because if they didn't fix the VoLTE silence on calling, then it's useless to me. I wonder where the OP was with his existing V10.. because I'm currently on 20J rooted with twrp. Seems with the instructions posted, I would have to use LG bridge to go back to 100% stock, then upgrade to 20L then hope this works. Again, the radios are probably modified so there's probably some kind of anti-rollback involved as well.
Great post though! Great work discovering this! Definitely in the right direction!

The Volte silence bug is fixed in 20l, as many have reported. I had updated officially to 20l and was stock unrooted prior to this. But for people who are rooted on 20j or earlier, I believe Eliminator has released a pre-rooted update, so maybe you'd wanna do that instead.

New Verizon updated being pushed VS99513A

just received a new update notification to VS99513A so if you are planing to root , I would hold off taking update until confirmed that the exploit will still work. Just a heads up
We do need to know if this breaks the exploit..... I don't want to accidentally install this update and dash the hopes of root/unlock

and when you rooted your phone did the 2nd bootup after starting step3 before the adb reboot recovery command take a really long time or stay in the verizon logo. If so how did you fix it

So I can do boot2 even before I flash SuperSU?
Does this update prevent you from KDZ'ing back to 11A using Uppercut + LG UP?
If not, then in theory, if you were to purchase or replace your V20 that had 13A pre-installed then you could KDZ back to 11A and then use dirtysanta from there.

I don't think it's possible for it to stop the uppercut restore method unless you manage to delete your bootloader or something like that

It is possible. If 13A has ARB enabled then you will be unable to install 11A KDZ. Since this update most likely breaks dirtycow then I would not be even remotely surprised if they have ARB enabled.(ARB is AntiRollBack)

I don't think ARB is enabled because I was able to flash 11A after the 13A update when I wanted to reattempt root
Since I needed MobileIron for work, I can never root or unlock bootloader. It's actually kind of relaxing. You just use the phone and let it be. Nothing I really miss.

It has been a few days since the last post to this thread so I felt inclined to ask if anyone and any updated information on this.
Is the update unavoidable and what does that mean for my fiances LG V20?
Anyone try to downgrade from 13a yet in order to root?

Yes. possible.
You don't need to downgrade to root. If you're on 13a you can still do the exploit successfully.

@me2151 is this true? Or do we need to downgrade?
You can try to root on 13A but there have been reports of it not working. It is downgradable to 12A and rootable for a fact though

what did you flash because I flashed the kdz and went to stock 10p which you cant root as of yet one thing you could do it flash 10j kdz and then reroot your phone though not sure if all you data will be there but thats your best chance.

I wouldn't tell ppl to try and down grade to another lower kdz because it will brick their devices. Please don't tell ppl to do things that will cause them to brick their phones.

First of no need to be rude and second I asked him what he flashed because if he was still on 10j he could reflash and start all over and if you try to downgrade from 10p to 10j it would not brick your device because it wont flash because of the rollback version change and I have tried on my person device to confirm so before you put out accusations I would do my research and I never told him to flash it I told him he could try and either way if he flashed a 10p rom and has no os he would be forced to flash the 10p kdz to fix the issue because the 10j would not work and I have tested the kdz on my own device and works flawlessly so.... I am not telling anyone to brick their devices I have tested all of this before I even responded and then again it is your own responsibility and your own device you do what you want just because someone said something doesn't mean you have to follow it. All I did was give him a suggestion and it was on him to do what he wanted to his device from there.
ps. I have downgraded for 10k to 10j many times already and never bricked my device so do a bit of research before saying anything

Seriously I didn't think anything I said to you there was being rude. He said he tried upgrading to the 10p and it failed and he lost root and had to continue upgrading and finishing it without root. Then you told him to try to downgrade and he can't do that because he will brick his device I was just trying to give him advice not to try what you told him to try only because he was on 10p. Man ppl are touchy these days about everything.

sorry bro didn't mean to get on you like that I see where your coming from but you accused me of telling people of wrong information causing people to brick there device which is incorrect if you try to downgrade it wont brick your device it simply wont flash I have tried it a couple of times. I didnt see the part where he was already on 10p and I have flash 10p and tried going to 10j again but it wont let you and it wont brick your devices even if you tried it and then again sorry if I offended you in any way
Anti rollback 1
See the attached pic.
