Screen overlay detected problem - HTC One X10 Questions & Answers

Setting up my new X10 is turning into a nightmare, as nearly every app needs to have specific permissions set before it works correctly, and then every time I try to set them, I get the 'Screen overlay detected' message - telling me to turn it off.
The problem is that there is no single setting to turn it off temporarily like there is on other devices (apparently), that I've been able to find, and the only way to set the right permissions for the app is to turn off all other apps 'Draw over other apps' permission. That works for the first app, but then all the other apps have to be reset. So, I end up going round and round in circles.
Does anyone know a way round this problem?

Permissions and default apps issues.

This device acts very, very odd. It seems that whenever an app is installed from the play store, its default move is to block every permission that app may have. It doesn't even prompt. So I have to go in to the permission manager every time I install a new app and "trust" it. Is there any way to just disable this permission software and go back to the way aosp marshmallow asks for permissions upon installing apps?
Also, I keep setting my default mms app to Google messenger, and literally every reboot it reverts back to the stock messages app.
Lastly, is there any way to have the hold home and swipe up function changed back to context search instead of this Chinese search app that is useless to my non Chinese speaking self?
Im sure ill have more to ask soon. Very odd acting phone indeed.
Have similar issues myself with this, even though I have driven apps permission they don't always work especially emails when the screen is off. I have been over and over the settings but just can't seem to get it fully right

Weird constant tapping bug

I've had this problem in the past with some app but I don't think I've ever fixed it.
As soon as the app loads, I get constant tapping at the center of my screen (I have enabled the 'dot' to show from developer settings) rendering it unusable. A regular desktop mouse cursor even momentarily blinks while this is happening. Prevents me from using the phone altogether, even the reset shortcut won't work. I have to lock the device and go to settings so I can switch apps and use my phone.
Anyone knows about this? Is it app specific or is there something I can do to fix it? I have disabled lots of settings on my device, disabled Xposed altogether, etc. Even tried safe mode but to my surprise you can't run apps in safe mode (how great is that?). Any suggestions?

Help App hijacking calls?

I was driving to my sister's house today and some app (I don't even know the name of it) popped up and I just xed out of it. Well turns out its one of those apps that put fake LED lights on your screen when someone calls ( and a lot of ads) I've looked through my phone and I can't find it! How do I fix this? I don't have allow apps from unknown sources on either.

I would factory reset and start from scratch.
Unfortunately, sometimes even Google play gets malware/adware. It's likely that the app that is causing it isn't one you'd suspect. I'd look at the permissions and see which apps have permission to draw over other apps. Start disabling them one by one until you find the culprit, and then uninstall it. You could also do the same with the phone call permission. If that doesn't work then you'll need a factory reset.

Pixel and Android 10 permissions question

So Android 10 is running great on my OG Pixel so far but I'm puzzled by the fact that I'm now getting random prompts that some random app that I haven't run in a long time has just requested location access. This might actually be more of an "how does android work" than a pixel question but I thought I'd ask here first. So apps that I haven't run in months will just get flagged for requesting location. An app like the TouchTunes app which uses location I understand but a network app like Fing? Why are these apps running at all? I know the phone has been rebooted since the last time I used these apps and I know for a fact that I've actively force stopped TouchTunes. Why are these apps waking up and requesting location?
PS: Love the fact that Android 10 is telling me about this as it's giving me an easy way to slowly work through permissions for all my apps!
Its all part of the new location privacy/permissions/security set up on 10 that flags up background location requests etc.
If you been into the main settings menu you will have probably seen the separate location tab with the new 3 level location settings, bit better than on or off lol.
Oh and those apps you force stopped have probably re started on reboot, if they have run at start perms a reboot will start them again when the system is fully booted.

So my dumb question then is there an easy way to go through all apps and turn on/off run at startup?

Not really mate, it's not a user facing permission that you can switch on and off in app settings like location etc.
I'm not even sure that would be possible nowadays even if your device is rooted?. All I can suggest is either disable it (if it allows) and open when needed or uninstall it.

Chrome gradually dims the screen

Hi,
after installing MIUI 12 on my Poco F2 Pro, I experience a weird problem with google chrome.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Switch off Auto Brightness (just to make sure, that the screen brightness stays constant) and manually set the brightness slider to a brighter setting and leave it there.
2. Disable Dark Mode (that's at least my setting)
3. Open chrome and go to e.g. google.com (or any other page with a bright background).
4. Wait a couple of seconds (scrolling and clicking is fine, but do not use the on-screen keyboard just for now) and observe the screen brightness. It's getting gradually dimmer and dimmer. It is not the screen time-out dimming (time-out is set to 2 min in my case).
5. Go to home screen and the screen suddenly gets brighter, i.e. it returns to it's normal brightness
6. Something similar can be achieved by opening the on-screen keyboard (google keyboard in my case) while in "chrome's dimmed state". The screen returns to it's normal brightness.
This problem seems to only exist with chrome. I googled and found a similar problem with huawei devices some years ago. But no working solution back then.
And strangely enough, I saw no post for Xiaomi or MIUI. Is it only my device or do you experience the same?
Do you have an idea what I should try in order to solve? I already did the usual stuff (delete cache/data, reinstall).
Thanks.
Nope. Does not do it for me
Thank you for trying it out. That's weird, though.
I will try ADB Fastboot Tools this weekend to delete the system app and reinstall as user app. Hope that makes a difference in my particular case.
Yes! I have the same problem. Really annoying, googled a bit for a fix but nothing worked. Ended up using Firefox browser for now. Hopefully there will be a fix in the future.
So, I deleted chrome (and some other apps and services that I do not need) via Szaki's ADB Fastboot Tools. After rebooting the phone, they were all gone, fine.
However, when I reinstall Chrome via Playstore, it reinstalls as system app (and shows the same dimming problem).
Is there any way to install Chrome as a User App (of course after deleting it via ADB Fastboot Tools)?
Closely related to screen dimming.. just a simple question: when screen dims just before the lock, can a tap be configured to just brighten the screen, and not actual tapping on something on the screen, like the button, or an option, or something that react to tapping? I just want to brighten the screen so it doesn't go off completely. Is that possible with MIUI itself, or by installing some 3rd party app, or xposed module, or whatever? Sorry for off topic. Thanks.
I have exactly the same problem, and as you stated, only with Chrome...any other app works fine. Thanks for starting this thread and trying to fix it...
I now use google chrome beta from play store. It does not show the dimming since it installs as user app. However, I would be very happy if this issue with the "original" chrome could be addressed soon by Xiaomi...
