[Q] Background processes killed since Lollipop update?

Hi there,
since the update to Android 5.1 and EMUI 3.1 some services like Whatsapp wont work properly.That means for me:
- Push notifications from Whatsapp and Snapchat will only arrive, when I open the app -> sometimes, when I close the app from the task manager or leave it over the night
- Whatsapp forgets the names of my contacts and only shows the numbers (some background service not running?) -> fixable by "updating" the contacts through Whatsapp. Happens at least 5 times a day, even when I'm not closing Whatsapp through the taskmanager.
Every permission I could find is activated, I guess it's some kind of automatic battery saving, which I'm unable to find.

I used to have that problem as well after updating my Honor 6 to EMUI 3.1 based on Lollipop 5.1.
Updating WhatsApp to version 2.12.278 (link in the FAQ section in the official website) seems to improve. However I still have another problem which could not be resolved, I could not change the notification sounds.

you need to set your apps to be protected at Settings -> Protected apps to prevent them to be closed automatically by the system

I have Honor 6 too, don't updated till now. And i have another phone with Android 5.1 with same problem. Is there any third party App like "protected Apps" from Huawei? I don't have any chance do get my backgroundservices running, that unbelievable :crying: who decided this? The Charwoman? I mean, android without backgroundservices = no mor messages in lock screen.
And when i leave app open, battery usage is 4x stronger then background service....

I have runkeeper protected and still after about 1h of usage it simply stops with no errors...
I'm on an early version of DEV (rom), I think I'm going the "stable" route next.

I have the exact same issue, came across this thread looking for answers. RunKeeper (and I assume any other app as well) is simply killed after about 1 hour. I usually use my phone during walks, to for example take pictures, answer chat messages and whatnot, so I thought the issue could be that I was out of memory and that is why it closed the app. To get to the botton of it, I tried the following steps:
- Reboot the device
- Clear everything from the multitask menu
- Make sure RunKeeper is set as a "protected app"
- Start RunKeeper, begin an activity
- Keep the app open, i e not going back to home screen or opening any other app
- Waking the screen every 5 minutes or so to make sure it doesn't go into some deep sleep mode
Result? After about 1 hour, when I pick up the phone and unlock it the RunKeeper process is simply gone, killed by the system. By the way, for me it's a Huawei Mate S device, but this seems to be an EMUI issue. I'm on EMUI 3.1 (B145 europe, official release). Just thought I'd chip in. This is annoying to the point of being a dealbreaker to ever getting another Huawei until I can confirm it's fixed.

I have this problem constantly. I installed an app called "pnf no root" but it also helps temporarely. I really like my honor 6 [ h60-L12] but this is a really annoying problem. I realize that huawei doing this save battery power, but this is ridiculous. What's the point of protecting the apps if it doesn't do anything in the first place ?

Hi, I have the same problem with my Honor6 [h60-L04C900B521]. I talked with technical support and they told me to install an application locking the GPS signal . Check if it works with Endomondo + GPS Connected app but this can only fix the endomondo problem I hope.

Unfortunately this application do nothing. Endomondo was kill after 1 hour running. Anyone have idea what to do with this?

Finally after update to marshmallow there is one option to keep endomondo while workout. Under battery in right-up corner there is settings icon and there is option "close excessively power intensive apps running in the background" this option actually works fine.

Permissions and default apps issues.

This device acts very, very odd. It seems that whenever an app is installed from the play store, its default move is to block every permission that app may have. It doesn't even prompt. So I have to go in to the permission manager every time I install a new app and "trust" it. Is there any way to just disable this permission software and go back to the way aosp marshmallow asks for permissions upon installing apps?
Also, I keep setting my default mms app to Google messenger, and literally every reboot it reverts back to the stock messages app.
Lastly, is there any way to have the hold home and swipe up function changed back to context search instead of this Chinese search app that is useless to my non Chinese speaking self?
Im sure ill have more to ask soon. Very odd acting phone indeed.

Have similar issues myself with this, even though I have driven apps permission they don't always work especially emails when the screen is off. I have been over and over the settings but just can't seem to get it fully right

How to prevent from stopping background processes

Hello, (sorry for my english ) I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 plus SM-G9550 and I would like to know how I can prevent the system from stopping important processes running in the background, since the widgets can not be used without manually activating the app to which the widget belongs. Don´t Synchronize the weather widgets for example, also applications widgets to record or play audio, only work a few minutes after application was manually opened and then stop working, also close streaming applications running in the background as "radiocut" . I already tried everything, even removing the apps from the energy saving settings, I put those applications in the list of apps without supervision of the power monitor and still do not work, only work for a few minutes and then the system stops the process, Could you help me solve this problem?

You can't really stop the S8 from killing processes. It has very bad memory management and constantly kills processes and running apps. It's very annoying.

I think you have to turn off the app from Battery Optimization. Try Settings; Apps; touch the three DOT menu on the right corner, select Special access; Optimize battery usage; on the top left select "All apps" by default it shows "Apps not optimized" and Turn off Battery Optimization from the app you want to keep running... Let see if it works...

I don't know is what that means.

In device manager under battery there is the ability to add apps to the whitelist so the device manager won't stop them.

This doesn't work. The issue is with memory management on the device. It's pretty well documented in a few places on XDA already and is by no means a new problem for Samsung. It has gotten a lot worse since Samsung started moving to Nougat though.

Can you give a reproducible scenario?

The original post already mentioned that he already removed the apps at battery optimization.

Open 6-8 apps, in my case phone, messages, email, browser with 10 tabs, BBM, calendar, Nine Email, and Slack and watch the phone shut down apps on its own even if they are removed from all optimization features. It sometimes takes a few hours, other times it's quicker, but sooner or later the phone just shuts down apps on its own. Most of the time it kills the phone app and messages first. Then all the browser tabs go into refresh mode.

Nobody else responded to this, but it seems to work for me.

I am a j7 pro user, android 7. I have tried all the oprions mentioned here but those are of no use. problem is getting worse day by day. desperately need a solution.

It worked for me too.
I had an Galaxy S6 and used to sync FolderSync with an FTP account.
After migrating to Galaxy S8+ FolderSync doesn't work anymore.
It does sync once while the app is opened and after that it stops syncing, no matter if it is closed not.
Removing Battery management for FolderSync app makes syncing to stay running in background even with all apps closed.

Pie update problem

Hi all, I'm a very unhappy bunny right now, bought the P20 last year on Vodafone UK. All was fab, loved it. I received an OTA pie update and now many of my apps aggressively closer in the background if they're off focus. Particularity hard for browser pages with a login. The app reloads and I have to log in, again, and again. It has rendered it effectively unable to multi task. (Much like me really). Even as I type this I'm afraid of losing the screen as I received WhatsApp messages. What am I doing wrong? It must be met since I can find no other instances of my problem anywhere.

have the same problem. Multitasking on 8.1 worked like a charm, now with pie it sometimes closes my Spotify even if there are 2gigs of ram available

I changed the App-Starts to manuell and back to automatic and it seams to work for now...

That's simple. You can control your app activity simply by using Battery Optimizer and set permissions from automatic to manual. Also in System Settings type "ignore battery optimization" you will see a list of apps that are allowed to be ignored while the phone falls asleep or being optimized and you can add more apps if you need to and allow them to be ignored.

It works for a few hours than the systems ignors my stettings and kills the background apps again. In 8.1 everything worked fine

I'm think about rolling back to 8.1

Rolled back to 8.1 everythings fine now. Hopefully Huawei will fix this problem with pie

Well to tell you the truth guys I just have received an update to EMUI 9 and I don't face any issues at all, I have apps which I need to be running in the background and as I stated before I just moved the badges in App launch section from Automatic to Manual and it's all ok as on EMUI 8.

Question Permissions Issues

I like to stop background data and set battery use to restricted for most of my apps.
I spent about 10 minutes yesterday going through every app and turning off background data and setting the battery use to restricted, but after a reboot, everything is back to default, including apps I've previously enabled to install other apps (Google chrome, mixplorer, sai, etc)
Any ideas?

Here is something that I do to achieve a similar result. I use the app Ice Box to freeze many of my apps that I want to restrict. This temporarily disables them, but keeps their data. This cuts down on battery usage, background CPU/RAM usage, and notifications. Whenever you want to use one of those apps, you can just tap the icebox icon and it will show a panel of all of you frozen apps and you can just tap an app to open it. It does offer the ability to put shortcuts of the frozen apps in your launcher to make it easier to access them.
If you are rooted it is simple to set up. If you are not rooted, you can still use it with ADB permissions (works well with Shuzuku too), but you need to reissue the adb command anytime your phone it rebooted. Shizuku makes this step a bit easier.

Thanks @synesthete, but my use is different. I've used SDMaid and other apps to freeze apps for years, but that's not what I'm after.
For instance, I don't think Google Chrome needs to have background data when I'm not actively using it. I also think that there's no need for it to have "optimized" battery setting if I only want it running when I want to use it. There are a lot of apps that fall into this category that I'd like to be in control of.
So in short, I want to disable background data and set it's battery use to "restricted", which works right up until I restart my phone.
I hope this isn't some new "intended behavior", that'll suck.
Battery life is part of my concern - apps that are on the "restricted" list don't use as much battery, and I couldn't care less if I get notifications from most of them, but I still want to use them.
Background data is more privacy-concern. I don't think most of my apps need to call home and tell them what I've done in their app since last time it called home. My invoicing program for instance. I need that info synced, but when *I* choose for it to sync, not 14 times in the middle of the night when I'm not using the phone.

Yeah I understand your reasoning and I agree that many apps like that do not need background data or to even run run in the background. I suppose some people use web-apps/PWAs and push notifications in their browsers, but it seems that background data should be an opt-in setting for many apps.
It is very strange that those settings are resetting after reboot. I just tested it out with Chrome and Chrome Beta and the restricted setting survived a reboot.

Damn, ok, at least I know there's something wrong with specifically MY setup.
Hopefully someone will chime in with a reason and a fix.

I hate to double-post, but it's been a couple days and I was hoping that someone with experience in what my issues is would chime in.
tl;dr the initial post:
I set specific apps to restrict background data and set the battery use to restricted.
After a phone restart, the settings are back to default, including any 'disable over' and other permissions. My changes do not persist after a reboot.
