Looking for help on an archaic platform - General Questions and Answers

A long time ago, when PDAs were still around, there was a guy named Gattobus who cooked up several ROMs for the PXA310 driven devices like the IPAQ210. These roms would load everything from WM6.0, 6.1, even 6.5 on to such devices using a formatted SD card. I can still find the original links to these ROMS but the downloads are all broken.
Is there anybody out there who still has a copy on their machine of the optimized english 6.0 rom? This was the same OS as the one that comes native with the IPAQ 210 but it was cleaned up for more memory, better performance and some stuff was fixed which was broken initially. I used to have it but can no longer find it. Please if you have it, I would appreciate your kindness to share it so I can archive it for good.
Sorry for posting in the wrong forum but I couldn't find a suitable one and I remember XDA forums being active in these devices back when they were in use. Thank you.

Nobody knows? This is the original link but it doesn't work now:

It's Globalbus btw. Gattobus was a mistake.

That's certainly the right page but the English ROM just hangs when I click the link... I think the RapidShare file is missing or broken?

If you scroll further down, you'll see this where it says wm6.5.0.93-21905_V1.01.15-441-WWE English NEW!

I downloaded it successfully
Also, there is a link to the kitchen that was used to build these, if the sources are still available you might try building your own.

But that is WM6.5. What I am looking for is the enhanced 6.0 rom.

It doesn't look like it's available any more, you might have to settle for 6.5 or find the resources to use the kitchen to build your own.

Indeed. I just thought over all these years, somebody would have backed it up on their hard drive and would be able to post a copy. It's what I usually do with such files, although not this time unfortunately. Back in the day, WM6.0 was a popular enough platform that I'm sure many people who frequent these forums today would have downloaded it.

Once the hardware reaches the point where it's obsolete, so then does the software. Obsolete software isn't maintained and people that don't have or don't use the device anymore have long since deleted it because they didn't need it.
I'd be surprised if there were alot of those devices being used or even still functioning. Things break down, especially electronics and especially batteries. Replacement parts get hard to come by, especially batteries because they are the most commonly replaced part and probably discontinued so that limits the supply of how many are left.

I guess I'm weird then because my ipaq210 is in pristene condition and I still use it a ton. Also there were many devices that used that OS so the user base should be huge. Granted, as you said, most people just blew the files away and moved on but there are those like me who hoard stuff so I was banking on the numbers.

xda-developers ROM image archive will be taken down

Yes, it is true, read the annoucement on top of the threads.
This means, no more hosting for the ROMs (released ones of ones created by us) this is a BIG loss as it's always a pain in the neck to great any ROM and will push ROM creation into the illegal zone
I will make my prophet ROMs available somewhere else, details will follow later.
ps.
yes i'm back, hopefully with a new ROM soon, I had to deal with a lot of personal crap, but i'm back again.

Yeah wellcome back This is good news...
As for "Microsoft's choice".... hope they burn in hell lol well in my perspective they're just trying to finish off those dedicate persons like Jesterz that are working hard to correct Microsoft's software defects...
Hopefully we can all learn from this as I think M$ just reacted to Carrier induced pressure due to lots and lots of customer complaints of bricked devices due to failure to understand ROM upgrade procedures... So please if you are reading this and don't have a clue of how upgrade procedures work, either, don't complain and deal with your bricked device (in a worst case scenario) or don't upgrade at all.
It's a shame
These guys from Redmond shoul learn to respect the work of theyr customers.
We make it possible that they get theyr monthly payment.
I hope we find a way to share our roms and tools any other way.
Any ideas yet?
I'll pray for us.

Yeah.. it's pretty retarded... The only bloody reason I bought an HTC device is cause I knew I could flash the rom for newer AKUs and fixes and stuff... I should've just waited for the damn iPhone.. lol....

What the panic is all about?
I don't get it why you all surrender to this Redmond threats.
Usenets have been around for decades. I am a regular user of Usenets from '95 and I can tell you that their strong arm didn't and probably won't reach there.
Why not simply post your valuable stuff there and leave our cherrished forum clean of any files whatsoever?
Just post to alt.binaries.warez.pocketpc and by the way the kind of stuff we find there is really lacking the quality we got here so the newsgroup might just improve that way.
What do you think?
It's so sad to see how MS is dealing with this situation. I have owned PPC's for some time know, and not until I started having problems first with my universal and recently with my prophet that I got into this community. This web site is the best thing that has happened to MS and HTC. I have singed Jester's petition to MS. I know that if this happens I shall go to PALM o iPhone. THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is sad indeed...
At least the good news is that you're back... so welcome back Jesterz
History teaches us nothing.
It is not by taking the ROM archive dowm that MS can stop ROMs from going around!
Why don't they simply try to release ROMs that WOULD NOT require any interventions from the final user instead.
Looks like the "prohibitionism" has taught these guys nothing at all.
i suggest we can use http://www.mydatabus.com host to share our roms. (up to 5 G space pro person and stable).
Rapidshare, megaupload, uploading...etc are not good solutions for us to download and exchange file. Because it will be deleted in limited times.

Upgrade issues

When upgrading my OS to WM6, do I have to flash the Radio and other ROMs too? If yes, which ROMs would you recommend as being the most stable and functional?
Also, I downloaded a release from torrent, "Microsoft.Windows.Mobile.v6.0-OTG". Is there any way to tell whether this is Classic, Pro, or Standard without trying to install it?
Thanks in advance!
The worst thing you can do, is start messing with ROM images, unless you actually know what you have, and what to do with them.
Please read the stickies on this forum, there are the known latest ROM images, and links to the wiki for help.
Please read those first, as it will answer your questions.
As for the image you have downloaded, it's not simply an issue of pro, standard etc, it's what device it's intended for. The only version that will work on a Universal, is an image made for a Universal, and that will always be pro.
Basic common sense, when you are flashing an expensive piece of hardware, understand what you are doing, and don't mess with things of an unknown source.

i've tried most of the roms on this forum and the best release so far I have found is o2 xda exec version 02.02.02. As the most stable, i've taken a few cabs from other release to include in this. the only real problem with this release is the fact that there is a small memory leak but not a big one and a soft reset restores memory. (I only have to reset once a day and that seems to be good considering some of the reports from other roms. all programs work. However, if you want to use the new office you will need to extract the program files from the /windows directory and update this rom. (doe's have office but does not have support for new format .docx but by pasting the updated files in solves this. Other roms have problems recieing calls as i've experienced.
Best thing to do is flash several versions and then go back to the one you personally liked best and just take parts of each rom to make your own master rom.
Happy searching and good testing.

This would be the first installation that is not being done through ActiveSync for me!
"Basic common sense, when you are flashing an expensive piece of hardware, understand what you are doing, and don't mess with things of an unknown source." <- Damn Right! That's why I'm asking around rather than charge headfisrt into the fray, then charge back out 'cause something went very wrong...
I gathered what I have to do from other posts, I downloaded this WM6 package, which I would be happy to share through the FTP server, but I don't know if it is the right one, since it said nothing about the type of devices it was intended for.
As for making dissecting ROMs and assembling myself a "Master ROM", I don't eve know what a ROM-image looks like, let alone how to assemble one...

I can say with 99.9% certainty, that the ROM images you find here, on this forum will be more reliable, and from as close to original sources as you can get.
A file downloaded from torrent, that you don't know the source of, that you have no idea about is not going to be something any sane person would use.
Delete it, and use the images you find here.

I totally agree, roms from here are more reliable. Not had one fail whilst flashing. Had a few with obvious bugs but these are getting solved all the time by our moderators and senior members. And then getting reposted for our consumption and input (plus contribution where we can)

Waiting to convert your Uni to Linux?
Stupid question: What is the difference between a T-Mobile ROM and eg. Commander Ivan's ROM, besides the themes? If I flash Ivan's ROM, I'll still be able to use T-mobile carriers without any ill effects, right?
And where can I find a tutorial that will help me in cooking my own ROMs? I've been searching everywhere, and still haven't found one(maybe just trying the wrong strings... ), and it's very frustrating to see a lot of cabs, and not knowing what each of them does, or even if I inject a new cab, how to get it to install, and where to get cabs, and stuff like that... .
If I flash WM6, do I need to flash Radio ROM as well? Or is it incorporated into the cooked package with which I update my Univ?
I know I'm a noob, but please help...This is my first time, and I hope I won't damage my device. And I really want to try a WM6 that has Office and Messenger incorporated...

best wm6 ROM

has anyone out there tried multiple ROMs for WM6? I'm looking to move to something different, i've been having a lot of trouble w/ the faria one that i'm running. Just glitches here and there, looking for something more reliable.
Anybody know what is the closest to the real mccoy release of wm6 that cingular offers?

Cingular doesn't offer WM6 for the Wizard. Your best bet is to just try a few out and see what you like best. Asking which one is the best is very subjective and has been asked about 100 times already with about 1000 different answers.
Good luck!
ok...let me try to rephrase, would u happen to know of any WM6 roms for the wizard that are as close to the wm6 for the 8525 as possible. Without a ton of addons or anything. I want to have something that runs as smooth as possible. Something that is as close to the "stock" 8525 if you will...
you should try wrcx1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322404)
As usual...READ READ READ! And deliberate what fits your needs...

If you think "a ton of addons or anything" makes a rom slow, you are mistaken. I think you will find most of the custom roms here faster than stock Wizard (8125) roms and they have lots more functionality. Having addons does not take away from your phone's storage space or memory. Only if you turn on the addons will it take away from your phone memory (but just like it would if you installed it yourself). Remember that the ROM has a dedicated area of around 60MB of space. If you put a 40MB rom in that space, you don't gain the 20MB, its just lost on the Wizard. So personally, I pack my roms to fill that space and give the most options built in for people to use.
But there can be a price with having a packed rom. Some have seen slower boot times and slower access to the \Windows folder when you try to use a file manager. But I've never seen it impact overall phone performance itself.
Just had to point that out, as it seems to be a common misconception that people have.

thanks for trying to be a jackass about the whole thing, you're attempt to help is dualy noted...
but to set everything straight, i have searched. Faria is by far the best working ROM that i've used thus far, and i've spent hours searching for ROMs and i'm already on my 5th one. So just because i have a newbie title on this forum doesn't that i dont know how to use forums, because i've been using them for the better part of the last decade. So please dont past judgement like that, it just shows your ignorance not mine.
One a more sunny note, ammarr thank you for that link, i haven't come across that one yet, and this will be my 7th try on a wm6 rom. Who knows maybe my phone is defective, but it runs the cingular wm5 rom just fine. hope i dont have to go back to that....
ammarr thanks for that link, i've added a few things to it like registry editor and such, but i really like the layout of this one. On top of that, its working well...phone not freezing, not dropping signal etc. Thank again.
well here's my 2 cents, if you liked whiterats rom, try bhoydegets "octavio 4" its an improvement and comes in different pagepools, try it for your self, here's the link

hey,
how would you say its an improvement? I'd like the touch scrolling and today plugin but dont want to mess up my wcrx1 which is working great. Page pools is not an issue since you can change them over activesync. I'm already running wrcx1 with 8mb pp.

I'm glad I can be a jackass and of some assistance.
You stated you're on your 5th flash.....there's over 70 Roms out there and new ones coming every week. You've done nothing! Faria's Rom was released about 3.5 months ago or longer. There has been alot of changes since then....but if you did some real research....you'd know this.
If you feel Faria's Rom is the best....stick with it, modify it & make it your own.
P.S: This is a developer's forum...not a user's forum.
It's not my job to police this forum; people are happy to assist with specific questions or issues as they arise.

1. I agree with dwny. This is a developers forum. This is not a forum for developers to help nubes flash new ROMS. I'm pretty tired of the "If I flash this ROM, will I lose my programs?" questions. I must see that at least a few times in every new ROM announcement thread. Most of the dumb questions come from people who don't contribute anything but "Works great. But can you add [insert freeware software request here] in the next one?"
2. If you're going to be a wise-ass, please spell all of your words correctly and use the correct context. It may not help you be more correct, but it will at least save you the humiliation of not knowing and understanding your native language. The correct phrase is "Duly Noted." And as a sidenote, dualy isn't even an actual word.

Head to head comparisons/review of major cooked ROMs - anyone done one?

Hello all,
Having recently upgraded my Hermes to a Kaiser (well actually a AT & T Tilt) and re-flashing it with Schaps 4.30 Rom i have since noticed a sharp decline in performance (compared with my Hermes).
This lead me to look around for something 'better' coming across Duttys cooked ROM and has prompted me to initiate this thread.
Has anyone done a 'review' of the major cooked ROM's out there or even better, put them head to head?

Be aware that it will be your full-time job as new ROMs come out almost every 2-3 days.
well lets put it this way. im sure many of you have tried several different roms on your devices.
can anyone shed some light our input into the major rom players?
answer this question and you will get it
Do you like apple or orange ?
They are both fruit but you cannot head to head compare them.
Beside that newer rom is likely but not necessarily to be better. Try around with different Rom and radio to get your favorite one. Well, It takes about 15 mins to flash so you can pretty much try all the Rom in here in few days. In the end, if you are not happy , do some extensive research so you can brew your own.
Dutty Rom is popular and pretty suitable to start up.

i like both !! so that still doesnt answer my question.
unfortunately, i currently have a pretty hectic schedule so i cant really afford to flash and re-flash my unit all the time. in addition it would take quite a while as i have quite a few additional programs on there.
i am under the impression that Dutty and Schap and the two major players here?
things i need to consider:
- speed of operating system
- ease of use
- stability
- usefull applications

Sleuth would also be considered a major player here...
In regards to what you want in a ROM, all signs are pointing to Dutty's except for the useful applications. Just add em yourself though...
His is the fastest ROM I have ever used for any device, including the Hermes...
However, opinions are like assholes....

oh please give me a break !!!!
the point of this thread is two fold. yes, i want to do as little as possible
however, i would like to ENCOURAGE the discussion of the different ROMs that are available so that WE as users can talk about what we like in the different roms we encouter with their good points and bad points.
and please, dont tell me you dont scour the internet looking for reviews ?

No, I dont look for reviews of roms. I flash them and if I dont like them I flash a different one. I have literally tried every single rom (that is in English unlike ATW who even tries foriegn languages) to try and find the one that works best for me. I suggest you do the same and quit asking for someone to do the work for you. The reason I say this is that I can't tell you how many times this same question has been asked. You are definitely not the first nor will you be the last. It seems as though it comes up at least once a week. So, read the first post of the rom, if you dont like what you read or see then move on to the next. Either that or do as most of us do and flash it.

We don't need to scour the internet looking for reviews. We just read the threads in the forum and test ourselves. All the information you will ever need is found in these forums.

Yup... with this guy... it's very easy to use PIM backup and your storage card to backup your vitals before flashing. Sure it's tedious, but that's how this all works. People will review different ROMS on different criteria and it's up to you to find what makes you happy.

Smart man , you want to pay the least to get the most .
1st fold
You want to do as little as possible, so we have to do more to cover your work ? > Fail
2nd fold
There is no "we" and "as users" , should be " I " " as a lazy leecher"
And there is also no point in promoting ROMs discussion. We can talk all day without coming up with any thing good but potential conflict.
> fail, again
I dont know about your schedule but my is also packed too ( ask a pre-med, senior Bio student) . And most of peeps here also get a thing call "life" . If I can do it , you can too. Flashing a Rom is not rocket science that would take a life time to do.
How about this, consider flashing your piece of device a relaxing activity for your break . I would be less pain and more joy. If you dont find flashing , trying and using Rom fun , why bother asking here.
p/s for the amount of time finish 2 posts , you could have already flashed a cool Rom lol.
I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I'm afraid the only way to work out the best ROM for you is to test them all. If a ROM is unstable, you'll be able to tell pretty quickly from scanning the thread and what is one man's "useful applications" is another man's "bloatware".
The best analogy I've seen is with cars - to some people the perfect car is a sports car, to others it's a people-carrier, everyone's needs and uses are different. Also, as most of the ROMs are built on the same two or three OS builds, you're comparing the cars with virtually identical engines, so differences will be minor*.
My suggestion is make a list of what you use on your phone, then decide if you want a fast ROM (in which case flash a lite ROM and add the bits you want via cabs) or an easy ROM (in which case flash a ROM that's got the most of the things on your list).
You will never get everyone to agree on the "best" ROM simply because there isn't one that is head and shoulders above the others*, just optimised by and for different chefs.
*No offence intended to the great chefs on this forum! I know how much work you must put into your ROMs and I'm not trying to belittle that, just get the point across.
Also, it doesn't hurt to take the little bit of time that is required to make an SDConfig.txt file for the User Customization that most of the ROMs utilize now. That in and of itself is a huge timesaver. Take advantage of that, and someone else also posted PIM Backup, which can also help aid in moving from one ROM to another.
Use one ROM for a week, see how you like it then move on if you want to. That's more or less what I've done. And I've found what I've liked.
JUst another case of someone wanting to be fed.
Was it Karhu who would do benchmarks of all the ROM's in the Hermes forum? Talk about intensive... but again, strictly numbers, meant as an informative comparison of different things.
I think I got your thoughts...
I wanna a ROM table for comparisons... I can say its very difficult to make
1) ROMs change every day... its a rough job to keep it update
2) ROMs are like taste. You like a XYZ ROM because its faster but a friend may like a BCD ROM because it runs that app faster.
3) There ia a lot of apps within those ROMs that make they different. Comparing works if all ROMs carried the same stuff.
4) There are no tops ROM... there are populars ROM
I'm looking to flash my kaiser too but I allways got confused too with different cooked ROMs.
I suggest you to read all of your interest, ask them for any detailed spec. Install the HardSPL for Godsake and try it.

No signal network operators :(

so i just loaded froyo 2.2 and the A853_Telus_Upgrade_SHOLS_U2_03.11.0_USASHLSMR2TLSB1B2B506D.0R_Service1FF.sbf for the boot load, everythin works, but i have no signal. help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Tonka, no offense intended, but why do we need four new threads from you, all pretty much relating to the same issue?
furthermore, if you had read the guide posted with the ROM, you would've known to back up your radio files BEFORE flashing...
after flashing and restoring them, if it's still not working, there are posts in the ROM's thread that include links to the radio files to various popular carriers, almost all of which work.
I got my radio files from someone on the forum here, you can too.
btw, RTFM. honestly.
im sorry, its jus i kept encountering other problems along the way, but would u please give me the link to these radio files, an tell me where id have to place them. thanks

thanks for the compliment.
to be totally frank, I had many of the same issues you did. From this forum alone, I'm up and running full time on the MotoFrenzy 2.2 build.
I only got working because there's plenty of other people who have had the same problem who have ALREADY documented the fixes.
If you look hard enough, I bet you'll find them too.
-- edit --
this reminds me of the old addage about teaching a man to fish... just in this case, it's about teaching a man to search.
well it would save me a lot of time if you could just help me, like i just have one question,i got the working radio files from system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/
an copied:
File_Audio
File_Audio2
File_GSM
File_Seem_Flex_Tables
generic_pds_init
now i jus dont know how to replace them witht eh froyo 2.2 ones. could u help me?
I really can't. I already spent a significant amount of time searching for answers in the loins of this forum for myself... I don't have time to do it for you too.
To be honest its quite the selfish request you're making there... hmmm... and you call me an asshole then expect me to help. Ha. No thanks.

just check out the first couple of pages of dexter's post, it's all in there
not to interfere with the debate,
but an honest answer is also, if you cannot understand the steps explained, i would not recommend trying to install any mods for openrecovery and messing with the files in the system..
you can easily corrupt the image, and you will spend even more time on trying to figure out why A is not working , while B,C,D problem suddenly occur causing A not to function..
I know HTC made it easy for all modders to make custom firmwares using almost identical radio's and only in some cases, it goes really bad for some regions, but in our case Motrola decided to make the baseband a huge part of the drivers and way to resolve communication and even make it provider locked or complex in a way i cannot even explain. (preferred providers over others as example, custom mobile services as another)
many HTC mods, includes support for like 12-15 countries in one image, looking at "locale" supported, where motorola pushes 12 different firmwares out..i personally only mess with a UK as it worked fine for me, trying to make the other 11 work, would require much more support and engagement in the technical aspects of the mod..we are lucky a few document and write feedback on how they accomplished to make it work (telus as example)
I couldn't agree more.
