Root guide? Which one to follow? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I am new to android and dont know much about them. I have the canadian version of the s7 (SM-G930W8). I am tired of all the bloat Samsung installed on my phone. I am trying to find the best guide to root and best rom to use. I want to have Samsung pay( I fine with android pay though) and I kinda like Samsung's Touchwiz, but I am open to try out other interfaces(I have nova installed for my launcher). Also what is the best way to backup all of my data? I just need to keep my contacts, photos, memos, wallpaper. Rest can go as I can just redownload and resync them. Thank you so much, please tell me if I am in the wrong section I am still new to this forum.

Hi
First of all READ, read , read before doing anything.....
Here is a guide to install the a custom recovery (TWRP) and rooting
On step 10 they show you how to root with SuperSU but if you wish to use Magisk , just use magisk zip instead
As I said......read and make sure you understand what are you doing before doing anything
I Just re read your post.
If you root samsung pay is gone, for good , no way back any more....so consider this if you want Samsung pay
Another option would be to flash an unbranded firmware ( un bloated) , check here and/or use a app like package disabler pro to get rid of what you do not want without the need to root
If you install a new firmware and use a different CSC than the one you have now you will factory reset your device

GS3DebugFSRoot Bloat Free?

My first post!!!
Anyway, I wanted to know if the GS3DebugFSRoot rooting method removes all the bloat on the phone? Should I just go with this method or should I go the Odin method?

First, Welcome to XDA!
Back to your question, I am pretty sure that the GS3DebugFSRoot rooting method does not remove all the bloat from the phone. I personally think that the rooting method is better than the odin method, because it is faster and is a smaller download (waaaay smaller). However, the root you get from GS3DebugFSRoot is as good as any other root (because of the way root works). You can use that root access to remove the bloat you do not want.
In addition, after using Noxious Ninja's root method, you can use the root you get to flash a recovery to your phone, which you can use from there to flash many roms/mods/hacks/themes/etc such as CyanogenMod
It doesn't remove anything, just adds root/SU.
Thanks mustbepbs and yosterwp.
yosterwp, you lost me there. Isn't here a major thread of bricking or some other damage to the phone if I start removing some of the bloat myself? If I root the phone how would I know what can be safely removed?
Here is a list of what I'm looking for:
I want to be able to install APKs
I don't want any of the bloat from Verizon or Samsung
I would like to us HotSpot tethering
I don't think I need any custom mods
I do would like the ability to set it back to stock (with no trace of it having been rooted if possible)
Whoops! I guess a went a bit ahead of myself in that post. I'll look into your list in the order the criteria is put.
1. Umm, I believe you can install any apk you want even without root access (Go to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources and check the box). Now if the application requires SU, that's a different story and need SU access.
2. [This answers one of your main concerns too] I forgot where I found this thread, but I bookmarked this spreadsheet on Google Docs. It is a table showing what is safe to remove, what's risky to remove, and what you should not remove. However, if you are rooting for the sake of flashing a custom ROM, then you should forget removing the bloat, as the custom rom should be devoid of bloat to start.
3. HotSpot Tethering should already be on your phone without root or anything... Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot.
3.5. If you are talking about not using that (because your plan prohibits it) --I'd rather not be the one who encourages violating contracts...
4. If you want to return to stock without a trace of being rooted, get ready for a HUGE download. Go to this thread and use your preferred downloading method. And remember to grab Odin from the link on the page. Thank the OP if you can. Then boot your phone into download mode. [(in computer with phone plugged in) adb reboot download] and then fire up Odin. In odin, hit PDA and then navigate to the large download. Finally just to make sure the flash counter appears to have not changed, go to this thread.
You should be good to go from there. I make no guarantee that my instructions will work for you, but it should point you in the right direction. And if you have any questions, let the forum know!
Wow! thanks for all the info.
One more question. What's your take on whether I need a Recovery tool?
I'm a software developer (web and Windows) and am planning on getting into coding on Android so I'm also looking for a crash course for that too. If you have a link for that I would greatly appreciate it.

Just have Odin installed and on hand. While the easy root solution is nice, it's still a good idea to be familiar with Odin as you're going to NEED it if you get yourself in a pickle or want to go back to fully stock.

If by recovery tool, you mean Odin, then i definitely would suggest getting Odin and the stock images for your phone. Hopefully you will never need it, but it is always good to have on hand. Familiarize yourself with it, especially if you are rooted.
If you are talking about a recovery partition, that is a definite must have when rooted! You can make complete backups of your phone in case something goes wrong as well. And it can do much more.
Now for the android crash course
If you are talking about developing apps, there is a user on YouTube, mybringback, who does excellent videos on developing apps on android for absolute beginners like me. I am not the greatest Dev (in C++ and Java), but his videos gave me a good foot into Java.
If you are talking about developing for the actual android system, then honestly, I have no clue. Many places will tell you how to download and build the source, but not much else... I am still trying to find a site that explains the source...
Hope that helps

Rooting problem

Hi folks,
There was this wonderful guide on how to root a phone. Well, I'm stupid. I admit it.
I have NO idea what flashing means or what ROMing does...
regardless, my sole aim & purpose here was to figure out a way HOW to get my phone in a state, where i can delete ANY APPLICATION tmobile puts on my bloody phone that i don't want or need. much like getting a new HP laptop...i buy my own OS and delete everything and start from scratch...
so first i got my unlock code from tmobile...so my phone is unlocked...but i still can't delete any app
so guy next to me who i know and writes apps for android says i should root my phone
well i think i'm rooted...but can't confirm...
regardless, going through this process of rooting...it cleared out phone contents...which i knew it would...you know SD data, sim card data...photos, etc etc...
lol...well now i forgot what gmail ID i used to store all my phone contacts that sucks for me...
So HOW do i get my phone to a state where i can delete anything i want on my phone?!! Thx
Unlock bootloader, flash recovery e.g twrp (v 2.3.3 recommended, higher versions have problems) flash super user then download system tuner and delete the bloat or stuff u don't want under system tab

This guide makes it pretty easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24478083
Follow the steps to unlock bootloader, get a new recovery, and a custom Rom.
Customs Roms don't come with all that tmobile bloat. If you like Sense, try Viper One S.
Goodluck and enjoy the wonderful world of xda.

I don't know what a ROM is
But yes, I don't like ANY of the Tmobile bloated software...my INTENTION is to delete all the apps it puts on and just put my own on.
I also don't know what new recovery means.
I'm a guy that pretty much has used Win7 for ages & ages..this is my "realistically" first smartphone, because the "actual 1st" had a broken screen and didn't play with it much. All of this Android stuff is pretty new.
So yeah, I just like clean slates...I pretty much just want my phone to play the music I add on it, my Pandora & watch a few TV shows that I add to the phone via USB from my PC.
As a side question, is it OKAY to ask about "cracked" apps...meaning finding apps that are free but are normally billable..thanks.
Earlier this morning I did go to one of the threads here to start "rooting" but I don't know if I'm done or not...how do I know?
get to know xda, not just these threads--ck out the wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Main_Page
i read and searched everything when i started
you cannot discuss cracked apps as the are illegal
if you are rooted you can dl and use apps like titanium backup and root explorer from market
all this takes time but effort like everything else we do
enjoy the advantages of being rooted
and once you are make a backup (nandroid) asap and a copy of your sdcard. put both on pc also

Stripped Down 6.0.1 SM-G900P

Looking for stripped down rom for 6.0.1 without any of that bloatware installed stuff like that, im using SM-G900P.
Anyone point me in the right direction.
Nothing stocked based that i know of. Your best bet is to request a debloat list, and freeze or uninstall system apps with titanium backup.

Thank you!
I went ahead and went with the CM13
So to piggy back off of this thread with out hijacking it, just wanted to say I just got a brand new sprint Samsung Galaxy s5...yay! (Replaced my Sprint Samsung Galaxy s2)... The phone already downloaded and installed 6.0.1 and so far surpringly I really like it.
But as noted above it just has too much bloatware.
I haven't seen a thread on rooting with Marshmellow, so is it safe to assume that I can use the normal method via Odin, root it, then push CWM recovery on it? Or, should I just root the actual phone? (I've always rooted the phone but changed to a different rom, where this time I actually like the stock rom, but just want to be able to get rid of junk, disable camera shutter noise, and be able to back up the phone, then with a later possibilities of flashing a new rom ..etc.)
Thanks,
-Nigel

If you find the thread for the stock 6.0.1 tar through Odin it has all your answers. And it's a threat perfectly okay to hijack. :good:

You should check out this ROM. It's marshmallow, and it has option for de-bloater.
I used the extreme debloat and it took 95% of the stuff i would've removed.

Can you help me?

Hello,
I have a Samsung A8 2018. I like how this phone works, but I don't like the software. I want to install clean android without Samsung's bloatware (I don't care what version of Android). I've never changed phone's firmware. Can somebody help me with this?
you have to wait, there are still no pure android rom ... twrp is already available it will not be difficult to install it ...
In the meantime, you can still debloat it. I posted a tutorial on this forum...
Rooting, installing TWRP, or installing installing a custom ROM will trip the knox counter and may be used as an excuse to deny warranty service.

My warranty is already void by a stupid insurer but nevermind. Is there a way to (instead of installing custom rom) root my phone?
There are a few guides to root the A8 but they are for different models.
Confirm your model # in download mode and post it.
It's SM-A530F
There's a rooting guide on the "Guide" section of this forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...de-root-install-twrp-samsung-january-t3760975
I never tried it myself but, it's easy enough if you take the time to read before doing it.
Also, you could use the adb method to remove unneeded/unwanted bloatware instead of rooting the phone. Again, a tutorial is available if you decide to use this method.

Thank you
I broke my phone.
It booted to Android Recovery mode and it doesn't respond
:crying:
I wish this phone had removable battery...
edit2: The phone rebooted. Can someone explain everything? I'm really new to editing phone's firmware. I don't want the clean android only for no bloatware, but also for Google's design. Tell me. What is easier? Rooting or installing a custom rom?

You can't really have the real pure Android Google design on this phone. You'd need to install LineageOS rom but this ROM isn't available yet for the Galaxy A8. For now, we can only use a Samsung based ROM on this phone as there are no alternatives yet. In the meantime, you could install an alternative launcher to get closer to Google design. Lawnchair Launcher is great and it's based on the Pixel phone launcher.
Otherwise, I can't really give any detailed step by step tutorial as I never rooted my Galaxy A8. All I can tell you is: read, read, read before trying anything. It's alway risky to root a phone so it's better to get as much informations as possible before trying it.
In my case, I decided to not root my phone because I was able to simply uninstall any apps I didn't want, using an ADB shell command with the phone connected to my PC. I also installed Lawnchair Launcher with this icon pack to get the Look of a Google phone.

Did it block with an Android icon and the message "no command"? This happen often on many phone, you simply have to press up or down button once or twice, it will get you to the Recovery mode menu after a while.

S7 T-Mobile help regarding Root & Rom

Hi,
I want to root my device and install a stock Android Rom if
there is such a Rom available Need guide, otherwise I'd just want to debloat my phone! Currently running T mobile 7.0 So can i flash 8.0 g930u Rom on it or I need to go T mobile 8.0 first
Thx
first off, do yourself a favor if you are going to play, take a backup of your system and download the exact firmware you have, just look at last 4 digits of build and add a t for tmobile, as for flashing a stock rom, that isnt what youre wanting i dont believe, just root your phone as it is without the u firmware, use an app such as titanium backup and either freeze unwanted apps or delete them, again, be sure you are familiar because deleting some apps will harm system, if this is too much, go on and flash the u firmware and be done, your choice,,at this time I havent seen a custom rom or even a port, so stock is about it
If you need assistance in rooting, msg me or google it and read through the lines, theres alot of useless info out there, good luck
