Rooting problem - HTC One S

Hi folks,
There was this wonderful guide on how to root a phone. Well, I'm stupid. I admit it.
I have NO idea what flashing means or what ROMing does...
regardless, my sole aim & purpose here was to figure out a way HOW to get my phone in a state, where i can delete ANY APPLICATION tmobile puts on my bloody phone that i don't want or need. much like getting a new HP laptop...i buy my own OS and delete everything and start from scratch...
so first i got my unlock code from tmobile...so my phone is unlocked...but i still can't delete any app
so guy next to me who i know and writes apps for android says i should root my phone
well i think i'm rooted...but can't confirm...
regardless, going through this process of rooting...it cleared out phone contents...which i knew it would...you know SD data, sim card data...photos, etc etc...
lol...well now i forgot what gmail ID i used to store all my phone contacts that sucks for me...
So HOW do i get my phone to a state where i can delete anything i want on my phone?!! Thx

Unlock bootloader, flash recovery e.g twrp (v 2.3.3 recommended, higher versions have problems) flash super user then download system tuner and delete the bloat or stuff u don't want under system tab
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app

This guide makes it pretty easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24478083
Follow the steps to unlock bootloader, get a new recovery, and a custom Rom.
Customs Roms don't come with all that tmobile bloat. If you like Sense, try Viper One S.
Goodluck and enjoy the wonderful world of xda.

I don't know what a ROM is
But yes, I don't like ANY of the Tmobile bloated software...my INTENTION is to delete all the apps it puts on and just put my own on.
I also don't know what new recovery means.
I'm a guy that pretty much has used Win7 for ages & ages..this is my "realistically" first smartphone, because the "actual 1st" had a broken screen and didn't play with it much. All of this Android stuff is pretty new.
So yeah, I just like clean slates...I pretty much just want my phone to play the music I add on it, my Pandora & watch a few TV shows that I add to the phone via USB from my PC.
As a side question, is it OKAY to ask about "cracked" apps...meaning finding apps that are free but are normally billable..thanks.
Earlier this morning I did go to one of the threads here to start "rooting" but I don't know if I'm done or not...how do I know?

get to know xda, not just these threads--ck out the wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Main_Page
i read and searched everything when i started
you cannot discuss cracked apps as the are illegal
if you are rooted you can dl and use apps like titanium backup and root explorer from market
all this takes time but effort like everything else we do
enjoy the advantages of being rooted
and once you are make a backup (nandroid) asap and a copy of your sdcard. put both on pc also

[Q] Rooting Inspire Question, Just got the phone.

Greets All,
I am sorry that I have to ask a few questions, only cause I really dont want to mess anything up, I got the phone about a week ago, and I have been reading alot of the different sections about rooting, and I see the different types of ways, and there is good replies and bad replies so I am a bit on the fence. I even got a CWR of this: att-inspire-rooted-signed.zip but I cant for the life of me find where I got it from. But let me ask the questions:
1) I want to keep the phone completely as is, I dont want to install another rom or anything right now, all I want to be able to do, is, remove the att software, and root the phone so that I can install the apk's I have on my sdcard. Do I have to go thru the whole hack kit or one click root and all that? Or is there a simple root and stay with the stock rom?
2) The file I mentioned: att-inspire-rooted-signed.zip I renamed it to update.zip, and then went into the bootloader, then recovery, obviously I got the phone with the red triangle thing, but hitting the up volume and the power button give me a CWR menu, and one of them is to install update from sdcard, but when I choose that zip it says about e:\cant open command folder blah, and then when I click update it says invalid operation. is that cause the phone isnt rooted?
3) If I have to root the phone, then which one will root it, but leabe everything intact if any? I dont want to change my radio, or the rom.
I am sorry if I am asking too much, but the rom has no sim at the moment and just playing with it everything works beautifully, even the gps works instantly because its properly using agps.
Thanks for the answers.

If you want to remove the ATT bloatware you will have to root. You don't have to root to sideload. Just download the sideload wonder machine found in the dev section. As for rooting id suggest using the hack kit. Ive rooted 4 phones with it. First use the simple gold card maker. Then download the hack kit and follow the instructions in the read me file. Att1 has made it pretty simple. Then flash cleardroid stock rooted rom. All the bloatware is already removed. Its really stable. Good luck.

I'm glad you asked this question because I want to do the same thing I want to keep my phone stock and just root so I to can delete ATT crap and to edit my build.prop file because ATT pissed me off today telling me my speeds are slower than my friends 3gs because his has more storage space. Wtf. We ran speedtest app on both Phones to the same server and every single time his ran double or more on download speeds. ATT told me its the device doing it. IPhone fan boys is all I can say.
Anyway is there a easy way. I rooted my old aria with the unrevoked root. Super easy. Does the inspire have a easy way.

No true one click. I find the hack kit to be the best for me.

I used bubby's one click method. Very simple, and there is a youtube video of it as well. Watch the entire video first so you have an idea of whats going on then go through the video while rooting. (not, downplaying the hack kit, i have never tried it) And for what its worth i too wanted a stock rom and chose Two pump chumps rom (Its a stock inspire rom -bloatware and improved a bit) and lee droids kernel, which gives a slight sound boost and smooths things a bit more imho. Good luck.
So if I do the root do you have to flash a Rom to delete bloatware? If I have to do a ROM the one posted above will it have sound issues etc? Thanks a ton.

should be receiving my Inspire tomorrow....coming from the captivate section, this is definitely a little different. I have a quick question though...
The hack kit is used to enable s-off, temp-root, flash a rom that allows use of an old exploit, then permaroot. Once permarooted and CWM recovery has been flashed, any rom from the dev section can be flashed which will keep the root.
My question is, this process only has to be done once, correct?? All future roms will be flashed via CWM recovery, and there won't be ANY need to return to the stock ATT Inspire, unrooted rom??
I ask because with the Galaxy S/Captivate/etc it is usually recommended to flash back to stock before flashing a different custom rom, which means you lose root. I usually didn't that, and never had a problem, but i'm just trying to get a grasp on how this process differs from the Captivate. I will be GLAD to have a phone that can simply be cleared and flashed via CWM for all rom purposes.
All i know is bubby's method, and with it, it gives you root but its just like when you bought it. Now i think you can use clockwork mod or something to manually delete the bloat from there, but for the trouble its easier to flash a new rom that has it already done for you, and get a few bonuses with it. The one i suggested has given me no problems and is a ton faster than it was stock, although your phone may be different.
My question is, this process only has to be done once, correct?? All future roms will be flashed via CWM recovery, and there won't be ANY need to return to the stock ATT Inspire, unrooted rom??

yes, the only need to go back is if you have to do a warranty return. Technically rooting voids the warranty, but if you undo it whos to know the difference

i actually meant to say "won't need to return to stock unless for warranty"...but yes i gotcha! thanks.
Like i said, although the Captivate seems more "open" or easier to root and such...in the end, this is going to be a MUCH better flashing technique compared to samsung phones. Everyone is always so worried about flashing to stock, doing this, doing that....
i guess i do have one last question....
it seems to be disputable at whether or not you need to do a factory reset/clear data within the CWM recovery during a new flash. When is it necessary and when can this be skipped?
Anytime your flashing a rom you need to do a full wipe, a benefit of CWM is it gives you the option when you start to flash anything to do one of 2 things A: being backup current rom, and B:full wipe.
So assuming you have a good backup already (if not do a backup before this step), just check the box for a full wipe and let it do the magic.
After getting the rom you want and you just want to flash a kernel, batterymod, etc then you only want to make a backup, you will not need to wipe at that point.
sounds good...thanks for all the help, Bamatide. Roll Tide!
I think i was just confused with the update process from within a rom, in which most dev's say it is ok to not wipe data in between updates. Flashing to a different rom requires the full wipe though everytime.
Just curious, but what happens if a full wipe is NOT done in between flashes? Is it just buggy or are there other problems?
The reason for a full wipe is because there could be conflicts between the two rom's where you could end up with just a bootloop and then you would need to do a wipe.
If you want there is a very simple way to do a full wipe, go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996383 and download the zip, this makes it very simple to do. I keep it on my sd card because I like to change rom's and this makes it very easy.
As for rooting I have tried both programs and found that Bubby's was the easy way to go, with the hack kit you have to be able to use the command prompt on the computer and with Bubby's it does it for you. I am not a whiz with command prompt that is why I did not use the hack kit.
I hope this helps especially the one click wipe, it work's great.
So with buddy's do you have to make the gold card what ever that is lol. I didn't have to do anything like that on my old aria and was curious. Also can someone make a sticky that explains what s-off is and what radio s-off etc. I didn't have any of that on my aria and I would like to know what they mean.
And to the op I'm sorry to thread jack but it was the exact same question I had. Hope you don't mind I'm asking on top of yours.

Don't be sorry most of us would rather you search then start a new thread. As for which method to use, essentially they are the same except the "one click" does most of the dos commands for you. Both downgrade your rom and radio and use that as an exploit, to root and s-off the phone.
Now problems people run into, there still seems to be a problem with CWM and the one click. For this reason I will recommend the Hack Kit, its nothing against bubby but it is sad to see the same "cwm blank screen" thread resurrected everyday.
Essentially s-on is Security on meaning you cannot flash unsigned roms. Radio s-off essentially allows you to flash custom roms. To flash a stock rooted rom you will need s-off.
With both methods you will need a gold card.
S-off also does away with the Gold card, once you get S-off you can format the SD card be done with it.

Help a newbie please!?

Greetings all. I am new here, however am a member of many other types of forums. I am not a tech expert in any specific area, however I have some limited knowledge in many areas from the early days of PCs, video and audio, gaming, etc... I have had my hand in modding RAZR phones as I owned many. I am new to smartphones and again, super interested. I am on my second one now and I want to experiment with the one I have as a spare. It is an LG US740 Apex from US Cellular running Android v. 2.2.2, or so I believe. I have been searching for about a week now on the net for information on "modding" and have gained some info on the android platform, devices, etc... As I can gather so far; the device must be "rooted" in order to do anything with the file system. I have tried in vain to get this done. From what I understand it is fairly easy with most popular common devices but as usual, I seem to have gotten the "freak". My first try was the easiest, z4root. It does nothing but bog down the phone until I reboot it. Second try was the super_one_click. It seemed to be successful, however upon launching root explorer I still can't access the files and there is nothing in the superuser apps list. I have also tried to use Droid Explorer on my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium). I got it to show the files once but had to shutdown before I could try to do anything with them and now I get an "out of memory" error every time I launch the program. My final attempt before seeking help was Android Commander which is telling me that the device is not rooted. I have done a bit more reading but am finding a lot of mixed information. I have done a search on these forums and can't find much information specific to this particular device. I posted on an older thread but got no response as this is not a popular device. I realize this may be a lost cause as I see much more going on in here and most people aren't going to be too concerned with my story but it's all I have to play with at the moment as I don't want to risk bricking a new phone. I am very interested in the android platform, modding, development, and this "new"(to me) technology and I am hoping that my issues with this device won't discourage me. Any and all insightful advice is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance to anyone willing to take my case, so to speak.

Oh joy, two walls of text.
As far as I can see, you're trying to root your phone, yes?
Have you tried installing the ADB and start a shell on your phone?
Yes, trying to root. I want to delete some stock apps, learn the "hidden" file system, customization... etc. z4root did not work at all. Super_one_click got root explorer to "see" the folders, but they still appear empty.
I have not tried ADB, would like to know more about that.
Thanks.
Thanks for the input JBIRD, however z4root does nothing on my phone. I have done some research and it seems I have a hard phone to crack. I am interested in trying to load a different ROM on it but I'm going to need more than just the easy road to rooting this thing.
Also thanks sdkudrgn88. I have downloaded the ADB installer for Windows and am working on the various plug-ins and other software such as eclipse. it's going to take me a bit to figure it all out and see if I can get it working. I will keep at it and see what I can do. Any help is still wanted and much appreciated.
Cyanogen doesn't have a mod for my phone. I posted info in my first post here as to what i am working with, hence the lack of ability on my part to do anything with it. I apologise for the lengthy post, I was just attempting to share as much info on my issues as possible. It appears this device is not popular with the modding community and I can see why now. I guess I will just keep trying to plug away at it myself and if I get anywhere I will share anything I can figure out in case anyone else has similar issues. Thanks for the responses and happy modding.
Have you tried Gingerbreak?

HAHAHA!, I wasn't going to say it cuz I'm new here and I know not to be "rude" in a new forum, but damn! I totally agree!
MaBlo, I haven't tried that, not sure it's within my realm with this yet. Still reading and referencing. To be honest, I wouldn't even know where to start with that yet as far as how to use it. Also have alot of apps on my phone that have saved info, including some stuff I have paid money for so I would also need a way to back all that up before I try anything like that. I do have a spare sd card to work with but am worried about saved data on the phone memory. guess there's much more to this than I thought there would be so I'm just going to keep doing my homework until I'm more comfortable with this unless you have clear instructions on both backing up my apps and using the exploits. Thank you for the direction though, it is very interesting.
Thanks
Thanks for replies, just wanted to say that I finally rooted the phone using Gingerbreak. Also have Titanium Backup and Root Explorer can now see all the files on the phone. Now it's time to play!

[Q] Need Noob Help Samsung Galaxy S2 skyrocket Android ATT

I am a noob I don't even know what to call my phone shezz. Alright I am going to keep this simple. I am very very new to this smart phone thing. I have never had one. I know computers very well and have lots of exp with them but none with a smart phone. I have had a lot of trouble getting the right info on my phone. I have read a bit about everything but some things apply to my phone some to others some don't make sense. So some basic stuff.
I tried to flash my phone using odin. I did it right but it didn't seem to work. I installed super user, and I clockwork. My questions are this.
Is it possible I changed system systems on my phone when I flashed it. I put superuser on it, and box system and clockwork and I tried using odin (I might have) im not sure. I don't know if I changed the rom.
Why changed the rom? Like... my phone has all the programs on it I want and it looks and feels how I want. I have changed it a lot before I rooted it. So whats the point of a new rom which im not sure if I have or not? What else can I change with flashing? I tried installing some stuff I just don't know if I did.
I can change the rom for sure I Know but what else? Kernal? The built?
At this point should I clean the phone wipe it? Then reinstall my apps? I heard when flashing the rom you wipe the storage so do I need to do this?
Also I am using 1.2gigs of system memory then there is usb storage then sd storage then external sd storage. This confuses me? Did I break my phone arr.
I don't get how moving apps to the SD card helps? I tried but the Sd card is still blank. Am I confusing the things? I do have a extra sd card in it.
OK. What I want is speed better wifi these things. So Should I flash my rom? is there a good stable rom for my phone? What else is worth changing? I don't mind doing it I just need make sure I can get all my apps back and that I do it right.
OK last questions. If I change my mind and don't want a rooted phone can I put it back easy? I have read how to unroot but can't I just reinstall factory defaults or is that not a option to unroot it? I have backed up deleted back up deleted and so forth I really just want to stream line everything get the best programs for rooting, rom, backup, accces, yada yada. I tried looking in forums but I get such mixed info and random posts I don't understand.
So again.
Please feel free to link good threads or forums with the info I need. I am so lost right now.
I don't mind rooting my phone but I want to do it right for the best results. Please help me do that.
I want to make sure if I don't decide to flash it with new rom or whatever that I can just undo everything go back to the orignal phone and just take more care installing my apps again to not get to much crap that I know is slowing it down.
I also want info on getting rid of bloatware I don't need.
PLEASE HELP GOD!! I just want to do this right I feel like I overclocked my cpu but I have to low of ram and its overheating. I feel just like I have this great possible thing in front of me and im messing it up.
Thank you. Basic info.
Want to clean flash it get it going kick ass. Help me!

Have you ever flashed a rom? Or overclocked before?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
you didnt keep that simple AT ALL.
why do you think you need to do anything at all if you have no idea what it is you are even talking about?
leave it stock. keep reading. dont do anything to change your phone/rom until you UNDERSTAND that you are not playing with a childs toy.
if you dont know what anything is called, and you dont know if you actually rooted or not, or flashed a rom or not, PROVES you have no business doing anything yet.
SLOW DOWN AND READ. LEARN and stop trying to jump into whatever video or tutorial you find on the internet.
I have overclocked my computers before ,water cooled, flashed bios. yad yada..
First smart phone. ever. My last phone was 20 bucks and I tossed it when I was done. that was 5 years ago. I am just getting into smart phones.
Really what I want is this.
I want a streamlined phone minus the stuff I don't need. To increase my bat. life. increase my productivity, increase my wifi if possible in crease my speed. More bank for my buck. But not knowing much about smart phones I would rather just do as little as possible and then not touch it again. Like flash it (whatever that entails) with a new rom then push the optimize button then be happy. Get what I mean? I Don't mind overclocking but I want this thing stable. I would rather it be last fast then have to tweak it every few days ok? Is there a rom with tweaks already installed? Do I have to format my phone first?
I have clockwork, busybox, superuser.
For sure I rooted my phone for sure I have clockwork installed. I rooted it.
Now what? I like messing with programs and such and themes and stuff but I don't want to tweak it a lot. I want it to be tweaked. get it?
Any info by great. A website with a stable tweaked rom. a link to a how to on how to install that rom. and just be kind. I don't know smart phones. Thank you so much for any help. Sorry I know it wasn't simple. Because I want only a basic thing. A faster phone. But I have tons of questions. Thanks.
Also be nice to know what I did to it already? I mean could I of changed to rom on accident? I used odin? I don't know what that is but I follwed the directions but it didn't root after I followed the instuctions so I turned to clockwork and then it worked. I was following rooting websites one made me think I have a new rom. But i never flashed it. thanks for the info.
If you did anything your on stock rooted rom. You would know if you flashd a rom u cant accidently or unknowingly flash a rom. Cwm is for flashing roms you download a rom put the zip on your sd card boot into cwm wipe data and cache and install zip from sd card. If u download a rom not intended for your phone say goodbye to your phone. You sound in a big hurry to flash flash flash. But i do not think u realize how very easy it is to break you phone doing this. Read read read read read read trust everyone telling you this read what rooting is what roms are what kernel's are and read how too root how to install roms and the differencrs op's have in there roms as to which wil best suit your needs. Do yourself a big favor dont flash or attempt to until u have done a good deal of reading up. If u dont think this is the case browse around on xda and look how many please help? Brickd my phone? Please help tried to root and...... threads you find

Its how to reaturn to stock and fix a soft brick. I would bookmark this link because it can solve almost all problems you may possibly have aside from a physical hardware failure
This is why i don't root other people phones anymore. If you dont know what it is and what its for then you don't need it. I no longer root friends because it turns me into there own personal tech support. READ SOME FREAKEN FORUMS FOR GOD SAKES!
Amen to that. I have rooted 3 of my girlfriends phones and my old roomates and i had to constantly fix there phones for them after they soft brickd them
your right after reading a lot more Im not ready to flash. I got some questions readings are not answering for me.
I have the firmware gingerbread I believe. and its uckj2 ver kernil 2.6.35.11
does the gingerbread uckj2 mean anything? I don't get the updating you don't have to format. Because I hate the idea of getting my apps back unless I can just use TIT recover once I get my new rom.
I know im going to do this but one more question. When they release a new system on my phone how do I update? Or do I not.
I just.. want to get this right. I know your right. I just... don't get how I find the right rom for my phone. right ver. right kernl. right firmware.
I also don't get why I have to clean my phone first. And how to make sure I can just get my apps right back.
What about all my settings? and my programs to GO launcher and stuff. I got my phone all nifty and pretty but I Really really really want to start with a fresh rom I would feel better. I want to do this . thanks

Hmm you got 3 posts.... I don't think im going to take any of your advise. I bet you don't root your friends phone because you have know friends. Just my guess. What was the point of posting that? I clearly posted that I am reading forums. I just am having trouble getting to the info I need to read in the 100's of phone forums out there. Its confusing me with ver. kernal. Operating system, apps, firmware, built, just little words that I don't know where they fit in on the smart phone. There are a lot of abbreviation.
Anyways. Thanks for the helpful posts. Like I said I know a lot about computers im good with them but I have never had anything like a smart phone in my life. Its so new. Even though I have caught on very fast and already managed to root my phone in about 15min of searching. Im just confused about really the words. I don't understand a lot of the short hand im seeing in these forums. So its hard understand 100percent whats being said. Anyways.. Again thanks for trying to help.
that was uncalled for, saying he had no friends. however rude you think it was, its called brutal honesty.
you seem so hellbent on 'making your phone cool' (which by the way, is NOT the intent of this website), that you seem to be foregoing the basic rule of LEARNING. i understand that all this is new terminology to you, so i implore you, to STOP. stick to XDA forums and go through the basics of LEARNING what everything is.
we all started out as noobs, and we all had to go through the paces of LEARNING what everything meant. Nobody here came to the website already knowing everything there is to know, and all the info you need is already in the forums. stop asking for a handholding session and teach yourself something worthwhile. if you dont have time for it, then you have no business hacking on your phone.
heres some basics for you:

stick to the galaxy s2 skyrocket forums mostly and you will find a lot of the info you need regarding YOUR phone. dont go wandering off looking at roms for another phone, even if its the regular galaxy s2.
EDIT:
i think this post sums up XDA in a nutshell:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Ok for starters here is the easiest way to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=13407
Next i would suggest go on android market and download the app.called.rom manager
Install rom manager
Open rom manager and grant it super user permission choose to install cwm recovery for the tmobile galaxy s2 ( yes you have an att phone but just do that it works its the same phone)
Now u have a rooted stock rom with cwm recovery.
For now i woukd just run that until developer support picks up and more roms are developed
Download an app on the android market called titanium back up
Open it grant super user permission.. click menu then batch then find back up all user apps. Now u have all your apps backd up. When u find a rom u like . Download it place it on you sd card. Open rom manager choose install rom from sd card. Check wipe data and wipe cache.
It will reboot into cwm and install the rom for you. When finished choose reboot system now. The volume up and volume down keys is how u change your selection in cwm. The power key is like enter/select.
After your rebooted on the new rom get on the android market download titanium back up and open it click menu batch restore your apps.
This is just suming up alot of what u need to know to flash roms and restore apps. Which u will learn by reading
Once you understand those basics then its time to start flashing and make sure u have odin and the .tar file u need handy. Because restoring apps with system data can cause force closes. I just restore apps not data. And you will at some point soft brick your phone or have a failure that u need odin to save u. Its happend to all of us
You can also make a backup in cwm incase of a bad flash its called a nandroid back up.
I have all the basic programs needed including odin. I understand the risks for sure. A soft brick is? hmm. I backed up my files already however I dons't know if there on the exSD card. I see USB memory, Sd memory, and ex Sd memory and that in its self is confusing me. I will be upset if I backed up my files with Titanium back up and it put it on the part of the phone that will be flashed clean lol.
Guess im not nice *shrug* I don't need sarcastic answers. I asked for help. I admit I am a noob at this. I expect a little slack if im acting anxious to get into this. I tend to like to understand things right away and to get things perfect. I don't like my phone being clumsy. Like I said to make it clear I want to control my phone and stream line it to the way I will be using it. Sorry if I sounded noob in how I worded this at first.
Some good info and good links. I am reading. I guess I was hoping for some basic info so I would understand what im reading a bit better. The terminology is confusing me. Thank you for the help.
I am taking my time, I am reading as much as I can. Its just ..... taking me awhile to get everything strait. Need cliff notes or something for this.
Im not rushing to brick my phone. I have burnt cpus before overclocking and understand the need to know what your doing. I just am impatient.
Thanks again for the +helpful posts. I appreciate it.
I think the problem is that you've come here looking for the easy way out, the 'quick fix' and there isn't one. These people aren't telling you to read the forums just because they don't feel like helping you. They are telling you to read because they can't help you until you do. While your questions in your opening post may seem simple to you, they would likely require half a book to explain if you have no foundation to work from.
If you're having trouble with terminology, google terms you don't understand. The best piece of advice I can give you is DON'T RUSH. It's the surest way to screw up your phone and likely turn you off of android altogether.
thank you. I understand
THANK YOU. There is a galaxy s2 and a galaxy skyrocket s2
DOH! I thought s2 was skyrocket2 no wonder Im having issues. Im reading info on two phones. Dang. That helps so muchhhhhh.
Thank you lol I do need to do some research.
I should of read your links before I posted my question. (sorry)
I will do my best to understand what im even asking next time.
Thank you.
See you later when I have done a bit more research.
Must clean the noob off *scrubs*
Sorry for any rudeness

[Q] Need app to backup game data

Hello. I have been searching and searching for an app to backup my woman's game saves and data. She is on a stock Nexus S 4G and we want to root and try some roms and themes. Problem is she is so into this game ( Tap Fish) she does not want to lose her fish tanks lol.. I know titanium backup only works on rooted phones. So i am looking for some help on how to accomplish this.
Basically: I want to unlock and root Nexus S 4G.
Need an app to backup game data (Tap Fish)
If i lose her game data i will be in the doghouse
Please help me!
What version of Android is on the phone?
Woops forgot that detail.. it is on stock 4.0.4
Sent from my CM9 ICS Epic, with a twist of Blue Mist boyyyy..
There is a thread on the galaxy nexus forums where this exact problem is solved, I'll come back when I get to a computer to post a link if you've not found it.
Edit

I would test this before using it on your SO's phone

Use this website to unlock bootloader, root your phone and save your data. Oh btw get rom manager aswell. Make sure you create a backup of your system, sd....etc using an application in rom manager. Once you have rooted your phone, install your custom roms kernels, themes.. etc. If you know how to use command prompt, it should be within 10 minutes to finish rooting your phone. If not, just google up how to use command prompt and there are good websites to tell you how to. Goodluck!

Accidentally hit thanks above (oops ). None of these options will work, there's no access to the /data partition. They all need root to work which, clearly, is not an option. At the moment there is no publicized way to root 4.0.4 without unlocking the bootloader, mainly because the phones running 4.0.4 are few and far between (and part of the Nexus line). Might be out of luck, for now at least.
Its alright

Well looks like she's gonna have to run stock for now. Thanks for all the help everyone.

[Q] Removing unistallable apps from stock ROM?

Hi
My Verizon S3 (SCH-i535) has been off contract for a few months now. I'm considering buying a new phone, but I think the S3 is still a pretty good phone. However, I would really like to customize it a little if I'm going to keep it.
It has the latest OTA update (4.4.2), so I understand I can't load custom ROM's. But I can root it if I'm not mistaken. If that's right what I would like to do it remove some of the apps that I don't want or have no need for, but aren't uninstallable.
So, my questions are, does root let me do this? If so, is it fairly straight forward to do? And, how do I find out what is safe to remove and what will break my phone?
I'm at the point where if I can't 'make it my own' (short of a custom ROM) I'm going to by an unlocked phone. Which hopefully will give me more control than this one .
Thanks,
Jon
Yes, you can remove "unremovable" apps with root. Use Titanium Backup or a file explorer with root access. You just need to be careful that you don't remove something critical for the phone to operate. I would highly recommend installing the unofficial Safestrap for our bootloader locked phones and make a backup of the rom before you remove anything.

Thanks. I had been planning on putting a few examples in the original post as examples. But when I went in the settings and looked at all the apps again (haven't poked around in there in a while) there were dozens. I couldn't decide which to list . So I guess I will have to be careful I don't go overboard.
I'm still trying to understand what Safestrap is, or does (although I did read some of the description). It sounds like even though we can't unlock the bootloader, and therefor replace the factory ROM, we can get the device to boot an alternate ROM stored on the SD card. I keep wondering if I have this right, it sounds a little odd. Or maybe not, I can't decide.

Yeah, safestrap will let you run another rom, but it has to be based off of the stock 4.4.2 rom. I think there are 2 or 3. And the second rom will use the internal phone storage. So if you have the 16gb phone like I do, 2 roms don't leave much space. I just use safestrap as a custom recovery to make backups in case I screw something up and to flash a few things. I just use the stock rom and don't put a second one on. As far as what is safe to remove, if you find one you aren't sure of just Google it and you should be able to find out. There are several lists floating around. I usually disable them with titanium backup and leave them there, although a did remove a few so I could add some other apps to the system. They can't run when disabled so they aren't using ram or battery. If it has the android guy beside it, it is probably important! I think I have all the Samsung stuff and most of the Verizon disabled.
