Hi all,
For those familiar with TGPT (http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/), I have written a small app that will check the site for updates and notify you of new prices. It also stores the prices in a DB so you can view the history.
At the moment it only works for Toronto-GTA because I live here and wrote this for me.
This is nothing fancy, it just works.
You can download it here.
Thanks.
cool, a small widget would make this even better
nice! thanks for sharing.

Originally I planned on making a widget. But then after I got the notification going I didn't think there was much point to a widget. Since I don't need it taking real estate on my screen when I already know the price from the notification. And once there is a new price, another notification will be generated.
I will try this out! Thanks!!
good stuffs! thanks!
Great start, just installed. Thanks!

This site you list is different than the one for Toronto. The Toronto site shows only a single price since almost all stations in the area are the same price. But your site shows prices for each location.
What exactly would you want to be notified of?
Damn, this kicks butt. This will serve me well when I forget to check the site before leaving work and shut down my computer. THANKS!

I think an extension for the Navigation app that show's the gas prices based on your location. It's rare, but sometimes you can find cheaper gas in different parts of a city
awesome, now just hook the rest of us canadians up please. This would be great in montreal.

This is not something I would use. So if I did it I would probably put it on the market for 99c

Might be a problem with lock 2.0? Can you try uninstall lock 2.0 and see if the screen still wakes?
Also, TGPT doesn't do anything every couple minutes. Unless you have the debug to always notify and force update every 5 seconds. Even then I don't purposely wake the screen other than creating a notification and toast.
Yeah if go to origional lock it doesnot wakeup but see tgpt running in task manager which should not the case. I check price, kill the app, it starts again in a min also i get error when restart phone for force close tgpt app
I'm using version.1 is there new version which i can download?

crimsondr, I gotta say that I've been using this app close to since you released it, and it has been working great for me being a fellow Ontarian. I did come across one MINOR issue/bug that I never have before, only because the stars (and time) aligned it as such.
I had my Desire connected to my PC in Disk Drive mode, thereby disabling access to the SD card. TGPT tried to fire a scheduled update (once every 12 hours, which is great btw), but couldn't read it's DB from the SDcard, and threw up a Force Close error.
While it's not a huge issue because you have to have your phone in Disk Drive mode when TGPT performs an update, I just think it might be better to have the .db file on the Internal Memory of the device, especially as seeing how mine is currently 4kb in size. This should get around the exception when the SD card cannot be accessed, thereby keeping TGPT from throwing FCs.
Just thought you'd like to know since it's something that doesn't happen very often, but still does cause an issue!
Thanks again for your work and effort in dev'ing this quick, informative app!

Make sure you have Force update disabled in the settings. Other than that I don't know what is causing it and I do not have an x10a to test.
What's the state of GPS on this phone in todays date ? Did it ever get fixed to be as accurate as other phones ?
Update 9/30/10: I was pretty hopeless about the GPS after reading all of your comments. Today I met a dude on campus with a captivate. We were sitting inside a building, so I decided to test out his captivate against my Eris. I turned GPS on on both devices, and started google maps. The captivate got a lock withing 10 seconds as did my Eris. My eris had an accuracy of 40m, while the captivate had 60m. Not bad, considering what I have been reading here.

The update did nothing for the GPS. The GPS is still junk on these phones. Samsung is one of the most disorganised companies there are.
My gps works fine. But then again I don't sit around waiting for the manufacturer... I sit around waiting for devs.

Even with the tweaks that people put out on here it's still worthless. I don't know if it's an issue with the drivers that control the GPS or what but it's not normal for it to be this bad. I sent my phone back to Wirefly and if they send me a new one I know the GPS is still going to be junk on it so I may sell it and buy a different phone that runs on at&t.

Actually my gps sucked balls before the update and now works extremely well. The update may not have contained a gps fix but mine has been much improved since the update. Before the update I would be lucky to lock onto 1 sat. Now I am able to lock onto 7-9 sats in under 20 seconds and pretty much stay locked.
Are you using the GPS Test app to get these locks? Or is there something else that shows how many satellites you're receiving info from? Because I can get 10 satellites 'locked' no problem using the GPS test app, but Google Maps or the Navigation app both still take forever to show my location, and track my movement, most of which is completely wrong (for ex it will have me driving in fields instead of on roads).
For me I can now lock indoors, which I could never do before. This is in the Gmaps app
Also I can actually get a lock in an urban setting (apts and buildings everywhere) and not have to stand out in a field somewhere for five minutes
There has to be some kind of tweak in the latest update, there just has to

I use gps test to see how many locks I'll get. But, I can fire up google maps or google navigation without warming up with gps test and still be up and running within 20 seconds.
Gathering anecdotal reports on whether the GPS is fixed is worthless.
Some people get a lock indoors and think it is fixed, while others do serious Google Navigation and My Tracks testing and find it is not fixed.
I do not think the GPS is fixed to be as accurate as other phones. Yes, it has improved since stock, but stock was garbage -- now it is just poor.

Thank You! Locking on Satellites DOES NOT mean the GPS works - Hell you can just use location to find out where you are - GPS is for MOVEMENT and how WELL it keeps up with MOVEMENT. If People keep saying that it works it's improved after the update - Samsung nor At&t will do anything to fix it (don't believe me just call them and they will get angry telling you how the update fix ALL that was wrong with the phone). PLEASE stop posting it's FIXED or IT WORKS because it can see and lock on satellites. Drive/Walk with this phone and then ANY other phone - Trust it will make you want to SLAP someone at Samsung & At&t.

Are you sure this is a GPS problem and not crap code for navigation app?
I searched through the Q&A about the S3 GPS, and I couldn't find a similar case to this. Hopefully it's out there.
My job involves a lot of driving, and I use my GPS for literally everything because most of the places are pretty far out there. I've used a Motorola Droid X and an HTC Incredible perfectly for this. The GPS would lock and maintain a signal, and get me there with no problem.
On my Verizon S3, I have an odd issue. It'll take much longer to lock in, and when it finally does, it seems to just freeze up after a few minutes. It'll be stuck on the same remaining time, the cursor will be on the same point in the road despite having passed it, and the distance to the next turn won't update. A little bit afterwards, it'll say signal lost and try searching for the GPS again.
I tried turning power saver off, checking the location services on and off, and yes, I turned it off and back on.
I thought it was an issue due to a preemptive rooting of my phone, so I came home early today and reinstalled the stock ROM. I tried the GPS again, and it had the same exact issue despite not being rooted this time.
Is there any fixes out there, or tutorials, or something that could be causing this? Thanks. Will click the thanks button the video beat over my head.
If it is doing it consistently take it back and do an exchange. I have sold two Galaxy S 3s on Sprint and was able to get a lock in a building pretty quick. I have the Galaxy S 2 and my first one had similar GPS issues. I just did a warrenty replacement for it not charging and GPS on this new Galaxy S 2 is great.

Alright, I appreciate the quick help. My dad is currently remaining vigilant in his demand to go through tech support first, so he's working on that. If that fails, I'll definitely try getting another Galaxy. Hopefully I can actually find one.
Maybe they WILL fix it, who knows! Probably not, though.
Question is still open if anyone has any ideas.

Oh christ. Dad just finished with the tech support. They literally just told him to check the location settings to see if everything was checked(which it was when the problem was occurring). Even took it for another test drive and the same problem.
This really does suck sort of, I love the phone but GPS is essential. I hope I can just replace it.
If they give you a hard time return it and go somewhere else to buy it. You have 14 days to return it without breaking contract. Go into the store and see how their display model works.

I had similar problem and just went to Verizon store today for it. The "technical specialist" had ZERO clue. He didn't even know where the location settings are. Anyway, after I showed him the problem in the store he ordered a replacement for me. Didn't even challenge me about trying to use it indoor, or having the WiFi turned off etc. I also tried the demo units they had in store and they all locked instantaneously.
It was pretty easy and I'm glad it's over. I've spent hours trying to figure out whether I'm crazy or the phone is crazy.
Good luck.

In my case I'm sure it's not a user error. I spent hours trying all kinds of things, all possible combination of settings and different locations.

At one point of my testing I turned on VZW location service in location setting and it locked immediately. I was out in the open. I then tried toggling it multiple time, before and after rebooting the phone. It never helped again. I'm guessing in a normal situation it could help locking but it does fix my defective GPS.

Did not disable VZNav and didn't even install any app. I still had the same GPS problem. So I guess in my case I did disable/enable the VZNav app and it didn't seem to be the cause.

( sim card replaced twice) Needless to say the phone is four days old. I'm taking it in the afternoon to be replaced. I have a few questions.
1. What serial number/numbers have the "fix"?
2. Should I honestly just select another device all together? If yes, any suggestions?
Thanks in Advance
This seems like a manufacture defect and not a reason to reject the phone all together

I have had the issue you are having with other Android devices. Sometimes it isn't a hardware issue and could be a software one. Closing apps, restarting them and factory resetting the device could either temporarily address the problems you are having or fix them entirely. I'm returning my One X because of the problems I have had with it.
I am waiting for my 4th HTC one x from att in 2 months. 1st had random reboots second had grey blotches on the screen. 3rd was a refurb that came with a dead pixel. I wonder what the fourth will bring. When I contacted att about they grey blotches the warranty rep told me they weren't that bad and to just live with it. If I was still in my return period I would have gotten something else.

Gps never comes on for what, Google maps? To save battery life I always leave gps off and yes maps will not automatically turn it on. For that I use switchpro widget which allows me to have a set of toggles in the notification pull down with all of my favorite switches like wifi, gps, blue tooth, silent mode and settings shortcut. Whenever I load up maps I will just pull the notification bar down and turn gps on manually, it takes just a few seconds to do it and it is well worth the savings in battery life to manage the various wireless capabilities of the phone this way.
The reason gps icon probably doesn't appear for you when you launch maps is likely that you dismissed the location services screen upon first start of maps. If you clear cache and data for the maps app and then enable gps on the location services screen at first launch of maps it should fix your issue.

Hi all,
In the past location reporting has been known to drain a considerable amount of battery. However with the recent release of Google Play Services 4.1, it is suppose to resolve that issue.
I've had location reporting disabled up until the update. Google Now is also active & has been working just fine without it.
So the question:
Are there any benefits in having location reporting enabled? (Apart from the obvious, sending data to Google).
In terms of Google Now, Maps, extra functionality?
Also has anyone noticed any increase in battery drain?
I actually leave it set at stock settings with my usage.
I'm seeing normal battery times on my phone too, no overheats or sudden drops from using like that I've witnessed.
Give it a try full on for a couple days and check if your losing extra juice and or getting same volume of info from now.
