Bixby Voice update - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

Has anyone else gotten it and tried it out?
It's actually pretty great. It's a lot more conversational style than Google assistant. I've used it quite a few times to send texts etc and it dictates very well!!
Haven't tested out the voice unlock, I use fingerprint too much...

Did mine too, been playing with it the past couple hours... Not sure if I'll keep using it, but I'll give it a week and see? I like Google Assistant better, so far, but I like being able to turn on bluetooth and wifi with just saying. But, Bixby won't use my 3rd party music player, email, or SMS (text) app....So, that's useless for me.
Like I said, I'll give it a week and see?? It also depends on the battery usage too.

Oh yeah, didn't think about 3rd party stuff. That sucks.
I like the rewards points for doing stuff with it. Now they're giving points as Samsung pay points

Voice recording app for Sensation

I'm looking for a good voice recorder solution for my Sensation that has been tried and known to work. I tried the Quick Record widget from HTC but it doesn't do much else other than provide an icon on my screen that does absolutely NOTHING.
All legalities aside, I have a rather combative employee at work and would like to be able to record some of the less than pleasant conversations he has with me when he comes into my office so I can play them back for HR so they don't think I'm full of crap the next time I tell them what was said.
It would need to be able to continue recording with the screen off.
FREE is preferred, but I am willing to spend a few bucks if needed.
Thanks much!
If you're in the US & have the Sensation 4G, the reason that widget doesn't work is because Tmobile took out the Voice Recorder app.

Voice Recorder from the market is free and works with the screen off. Been using it for a long time with my N1 and it works fine with the Sensation.

Yeah. My wife and I have used it for more than a year. She was able to record lectures with it pretty good. She says the most she ran it was 30 minutes at a time but it didn't drain her battery. It's pretty lightweight and has some decent features. I used it a handful of times.

Are there any reasons to update to 4.4.3 aside from it simply being newer?

Are there any specific reasons for 4.4.3?
Is the radio better?
Is the OS faster?
Are there fixed bugs?
Are there fewer new bugs?
Is it more stable?
Is it more power efficient?
Are any of the above also true for the HTC+Verizon version we are given, as opposed to pure Google?
I would like to know this also. The only bonus I can think of is EPS mode which isn't as good as I thought it'd be (since I use different e-mail and text apps). So the biggest deciding factor for me to get 4.4.3 is a wash unless someone points out a bigger bonus that I'm missing. Till then 4.4.2 w/ Weaksauce is where I stay.
Its up to you. As there is a lot of fixes. But depends on the person. And what ROM your running. If you have your phone setup perfect and everything running great. Leave it alone.

OK Google works on any screen or while using any app. Also when the screen is off (while charging). Handy if you are one that uses it.
A lot of bug fixes and some new minor issues bit not much of a change. EPS mode enabled but actually preferred the regular PS which can be enabled by changing the value to TRUE in the defaulf.XML file.
I'm sure you saw a ton of news about Heartbleed. I believe all of the openssl libraries were updated in this release.

These features are available in the ok google settings on 4.4.2.
The settings were there but they didn't work. Works only on 4.4.3. Or at least that's what I read while trying to find why it wouldn't work for me previously (was on 4.4.2). Since updating, it works great.

Weird I've been using those features since I found them probably a month ago. Unless cleanrom made them work. I just tried it with a dozen random apps and it works fine, plugged in screen off also works fine. I wish it worked without being plugged in and screen off though.

Why does it cause the GPS and BoomSound logo to pop up every 3 seconds or so
Edit: After a day of use that app is garbage, Only works half the time and drains the battery way faster than it should(yes I understand its listening all the time, its worse than that.) Plus its using gps all the time, cant think of a reason it needs my location when all it does is trigger google now to start.
Will updating remove my root??

I've had it for almost a year, and yes it does use its fair share of battery, but u have to program it right. Being that it was made BEFORE Google released the ability to have it listening on all screens , there's an option to have it run ONLY while the screen is off, and I'm not sure what u mean about the gps, because it doesn't use location for me at all. U also have the option to blacklist it during certain apps (donate version ) its most certainly not "garbage" as There's really no other apps out that enable the always listening functionality… and if you do the regular ok google command, that makes the boomsound icon appear as well. So if you're saying your constantly seeing it, that means u didn't set it up right, u had it running ON TOP OF Google's always listening as well… so of course its gonna drain your battery… If u program it to only listen while the screen is off, you'll only notice the boomsound icon for a split second when u turn the screen on, and then it shuts off and googles listening takes over…

Package Disabler Pro?

Has anyone tried using Package Disabler Pro on the S8 yet? Before I load it up and give it a shot, I want to make sure there haven't been any major issues. Most of this bloat can't be disabled unfortunately.
Why don't you try it out and let us know. =)
I've used it and it worked pretty well. You have to be careful what you disable though.
If you disable all the Bixby processes for example, the side button becomes a useless when you press it. I also learned that if you disabled the Samsung Contacts app it takes the dialer away with it as well.
Was a bunch of trial and error but it does work.

I used the 'Disable all Bloatware' option and so far no issues. But it has only been a couple of hours and I haven't tested everything of course. I did remap the Bixby button first, not sure if it matters.

Bixby is not as integrated into the phone as Samsung would like you to believe. It's pretty much 5 processes as far as I saw in Package Disabler. 3 Bixby processes and 2 voice processes; after if you disable pressing the Bixby button results in nothing happening.
Bixby is so half baked; if you turn off the Bixby Home page on the main screen and try using the button, it takes multiple presses before it does anything (It just launches into Bixby Home). Funny thing is that Bixby Home seems to be constantly killed by the RAM management on the S8+.

Uh... ok. Did I offend you somehow? If so, sorry. I'm really tone deaf when it comes to reading comments on the internet.
On a side note. If anyone has disabled Knox and its related processes; does it do anything to impact the daily usage of the phone? I was a bit hesitant to disable those.

Edit: Resolved - For over 10 years, I have been using the BACK button to close activities. All of them. When I want to return to the launcher, I just press BACK from withing the given app until I get 'back' to the launcher. Why wouldn't I do this? It's how you close an app. Well, I hit the HOME button instead of using BACK to exit the app gracefully like I do for all other apps I run.. and.. AOE works. I don't get it. I'm not much of an Android developer, and I hate everything Google has done to Android in the last 5 years, but what gives here? I assume (and I can see) that the backgroud service still runs after the activity closes, so why would I want to leave the activity open and return to the launcher without gracefully closing the current activity? Anyway.. if I leave the activity open, it seems to work as expected, but not if I close the activity. Go figure.

I am using Resurrection Remix 8.6.7 on OnePlus 7 Pro. I've tried Plus Beat, True Edge, and now Always On Edge. I can't get any of them to work. Plus Beat came the closest by repeatedly flashing the lock screen, but I really want to use AOE and I would like to see the edge 'horizon' lights. I've given AOE every permission and accessibility service I know how to, and it still does not work.
Is it possible to use AOE on One Plus 7 Pro with Resurrection Remix 8.6.7 (Android Q10 based, and goes on top of OOS 10.3.8)?

Pixel pulse was my go to alternative for AOD notifications but since it doesn't support 10 yet I just have to deal with missed notifications. First one plus device and probably my last. They make great devices if you SETTLE for less than what mid-range phones offer. I wish I had a Instagram and Twitter I'd call it the CEO. Tell him give us AOD if it takes up battery life that's our choice. It's ignorant honestly. Live and learn I guess. Back to LG or Samsung sadly next time I upgrade. 2 years probably
