Which USB-C cable works with MI4C?

Hi,
I ordered an additional USB-C cable off Amazon: Anker Usb-C to Usb3.0 to have a spare charging / data cable.
So, the first cable that arrived fit into the phone but slipped out at the slightest touch. Additionally, my PC did not recognize the MI4C in any useful way (no MTP, no MI PC Suite) - both work instantly with the original cable.
After contacting Anker support, they said the cable is faulty and immediately sent me a replacement.
The second cable fit into the phone much nicer. It sort of snaps into the socket like it should.
However, my PC still does not recognize it..
Charging seems to work with both cables.. .at least the phone detects that it gets power.
I'm puzzled now.. what is wrong with the phone and/or the cable?
Is the MI4C using some special standard that the cable doesn't support?
Which cables work?

Hey Jo, i use the Anker USB C to USB 3.0 and it works fine withe the Mi-4c and the PC, no problems at all...

After reading all his reviews I bought the official Google USB C... I guess they got me...

Does anyone know about a good micro-usb to usb-c converter with an 56k ohm resistor?

Any USB Typ c "compliant to the Norm" cable will be OK. So i would say yes. But its not a issue if you use a non compliant cable only with mi4c. This will work because our phone throttles the current when being charged with 5V. But if you use it with other equipment later a non compliant cable may damage USB hubs, Laptops USB ports or PSUs. I will Not take this risk and would buy a compliant cable.

Sorry, but I think I need it once more
The cable we that came with our MI4c phone can only be used with the MI4c phone - and might damage chargers, laptops etc. if we try to charge a "normal" USB-C compatible device (like the Nexus 5X phone) with this cable. Right?
However, using a standard, normal USB-C cable, like the Anker one mentioned earlier in this thread with work with MI4c phones and any other "normal" USB-C compatible device. Right?
I just want to be clear, and not fry anything that doesn't need to be fried, if you understand...

As I understand it, its only when 'Charging' devices that the cables you are using becomes important.
Real Type-C devices are USB 3.0 and can draw a lot more power than USB 2.0 devices.. So their cables need a higher rated resistor to protect your devices.
The Mi4C is a USB 2.0 Device with a Type-C connector, hence any cable should be fine as USB 3.0 is backward compatible. But if you use the Mi4C Type-C cable to try and charge a Nexus 6, Lumia 950, Pixel or Mac Book it could fail and damage your device.

I guess that explains why it would barely charge when left connected to my laptop.

About quick charge

i see that its charge my xiaomi mi4c a little bit faster then the original one but theres not big diffrence
i tried on my girlfriend lg g4 and the charging is really fast
i think that xiaomi has built in limit for the charging
any idea what to do to skip that limit?

Until xiaomi releases kernel source code and a custom kernel is developed, nothing can be done about the charging limits (which is true and tested). I used the same charger to charge my HTC M8 and it has quick charge compared to the M8 original charger.

From what I have understood, the original cable that came with the MI4c is a modified Micro-USB type B cable, and not a "real" USB-C cable. So your (and my) MI4c phone draws a maximum of 5V~2A from the original charger and the standard USB-C cable, whereas the LG G4 draws a maximum of 20V~5A from the USB-C cable. This means that the LG get more power, faster from the USB-C cable you bought, and therefore gets charged faster - and you will not notice a big difference when using the USB-C cable, as your phone only draws the mentioned 5V~2A.
Do yourself a big favor, and throw away your original cable from Xiaomi, as it might potentially break your charger, laptop etc. if you use it in your girlfriends phone!

G4 does not have USB Type c cable.

Good to know... I just assumed there was USB-C type cable to the G4 as OP apparently were able to charge the phone with a USB-C type cable.
OP must have mixed up the model name of the phone, then.

Hi, I tried an Anker and Aukey quickcharge wall charger with some issues...I used till now the original battery charger with its usb cable. I usually charge the phone turning it off... When it gets to 100% I unplug the phone and then turn on .. that's normal ok... But I noticed that using another compatible charger that uses Qualcoom 2.0 quick charge technology.. once the phone gets 100% and I unplugg the charger my phone boots by itself.. Why does it happen with this charger and not with the original one???

Any way for USB-C charger and CC cable to get approved?

I'm looking for a USB-C plug for my Nexus 6P. There are so few on the market and I would like to try one.

Anybody tried this charger and cc cable? Reviews say it works pretty well, but is there any tool like CheckR to test and approve the usb-c plug and cable? This might be important to note, due to the whole fiasco with the cables which would damage the phone/charger due to incorrect build. Benson Leung only tests AC cables as far as I know.

While there is the potential for a USB C charger and cable to not be powerful enough to meet the 3amp charging spec, a type C to C cable is unlikely to fail to be compliant in the same way as the A to C cables are.
The A to C cables were mostly non compliant as they were being identified as being compatible with the USB C spec and thus being able to supply 3amps of power, whereas in reality cables/chargers with type A connectors max out at 2.4 amps or in most cases a lot less.

A-C cables required a 56K resistor, but most companies initially used a 10K one which was the issue. C-C cables don't need a resistor the way that the A-C ones do,so they should all be compliant from what I understand.

I have been looking at the end chotech charger on amazon for 2 days now trying to figure out if it's OK or not since it's not on the Benson list of approved chargers.
Are you saying that if you get a charger like the one in the original posters link that has a USB c port you'll be fine because there is no USB A cable in the equation?

It should be fine as long as it only supports 5V/3(like the Choetech does) and not a different quick charging method like QC 2.0/3.0.

Even if it supports Qualcomm's QuickCharge, isn't part of the QC spec that there's a chip inside the charger to identify QC-capable devices and otherwise act as a 'normal' charger?
I would think so long as it supports 5V/3A you would be fine no matter what other standard it supports.

I don't see an issue, but keep in mine that longer cables could have a current drop due to increased resistance over the length. It shouldn't be a huge amount so I wouldn't worry about it. I use the Google 6ft C-C cable and get the full 3A when my battery is below 40%.

That's correct, but I don't want to fully recommend something that could cause an issue. I have a charger with QC 3.0 over the Type-C port and I have 0 issues using it. It still violates the USB standard to have QC 2.0/3.0 over a Type-C port, but that doesn't mean it won't work. It works, but could potentially cause an issue at some point. I can link you the post by Benson Leung along with the appropriate USB standard if you need it.

I haven't tested that charger, but I do have the exact same model with 2 Type-A ports instead of 1 A and 1 C. Maybe Tronsmart will send me one to test out You can see a review of the version I have in my signature (last link that's says Tronsmart Titan). I have their car charger which also has the same voltages over the Type-C port and it charges my 6P just fine even though its technically not in spec.

Yeah saw that when you first posted it. I've had other Tronsmart chargers and cables before. I also bought the Titan when it first came out too and they haven't failed or anything yet. I'm just a little cautious since type-C is new. Hopefully Tronsmart sends you the wall charger to test. I won't get mine for a few weeks due to international shipping and everything.

I've got the Choetech C to C charger and cable. Would recommend it without any hesitation. Build quality is on par with the stock charger, but nothing more. It's not braided or anything, so it's a normal cable with a normal charger

I guess we will see what happens. The Titan is a beast, but I can't use the full potential is has with 2 phones. The wall charger should work fine if it's anything like their car charger.

3.0 Quick Chargers

Has someone gathered some experience with Mi5 compatible chargers supporting Quick Charge 3.0?
The original chinese charger that came with the 128GB Mi5 version actually has a QC 3 symbol on the back - while I read it supports just 2.0.
My 'dream' charger should have easy switchable power plugs so it can be easily adjusted to the country's power sockets you're staying in. I remember my old HTC phone once came with 3 different, interchangeable plugs out of the box!

Well, lets say the stock charger isn't the best build quality if you ask me, or at least it does'nt look very "trustworthy".
I wouldn't use it without fear about fire... so i never used it

I'm using the AuKey Quick Charge 3.0 with 2 Ports and a "good" USB A 3.0 highspeed cable with 56k resistor.
If the display is off and you wake it up while its on charger, on the bottom you can see a notice if its quick or slow charging.

I guess am using the same charger you mentioned (w/ 2 orange usb type a ports) in combination with the stock usb type a to c cable which was shipped with my MI5. The cable the charger came with was of little use as it is was not a type c cable :/
this notification you are talking of however.. how does it look like? atm I have no clue what I should be looking for to be honest
(I also tried an Anker QC 3.0 charger - performance-wise it was a lot worse than the Aukey charger and therefore went right back to Amazon)

I went for the Tronsmart qc3 for both car and regular. Good quality, just make sure you buy a decent cable along.

I think the stock charger isn't a QC 3.0 charger. (And neither is the cable IMO.)
But I am not sure, and not bothered to test. :cyclops:

To those who replied here with tronsmart or aukey QC3 chargers, does it come with a USB type C cable? I cannot find any info about this in google alone. TIA, cheers.

My aukey QC3 charger from amazon Germany came without any cable. I am therefore currently using the stock USB type C cable. I am however not sure whether that cable is 100% compliant and to be honest quite annoyed by all that controversy around the type C standard and QC3 and the incompatibility between both -.-

The "anker qc3" charger I tried was definitely charging slower than the stock charger + travel adapter : )

I was eyeing on Tronsmart's QC3 1port wall charger, but I found out that it only has the micro-usb cable, and not the Type-C for Mi5.

An Aukey is on the way to me with the cable included.
I earlier suggested the BlitzWolf, but BlitzWolf is not really certified for QC3.

Question about "charging rapidly"

The usb C to C cable that came with my phone is getting a bit battered with use. If I get a new one, will I still be able to get a rapid charge?
In other words, will any usb c to usb c cable fast charge my phone as long as the brick part of the charger is used?

Choetech charger on amazon is what I bought and its worked fine. They have them on amazon.

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on my original post. Since the charger part works fine, I was wondering if I could just buy a usb c cable instead. If so, will any usb c to c cable, along with the original charger (the part that plugs to the outlet), be able to "rapidly charge" my 6p, or do I need to find a cable with x or y characteristics?

Please google Benson Leung and his work on testing and approving USB C cables for Google phones. Then you'll know more about the cables and what to buy.
But to answer your question, yes any USB C-C cable can work for rapid charging with the stock charger provided they meet the proper USB C specs.
