Hey Guys,
i'm using the newest Matr1x Kernel, v11.0, CFS
and NSCollab 1.0.60 with my Nexus S.
CPU govenor is Lazy, i/o sheduler is deadline. Deep Idle is on.
Min CPU is 100 MHz, Max is 800 MHz, standard voltage.
13 h of usage, 8 % battery left. How can i improve?
I wouldn't consider my usage of the phone as heavy, screen is off quite often, especially at work. At work i'm writing some texts, browse a little bit on facebook, write some **** on whatsapp. Phone ist mostly off, i mostly respond to messages i get.
After work i browse some, play some games (Zenonia at the moment ), download something on wifi etc. Not too much in my opinion. Still battery quite sucks.
So my questions are:
1. Why is my battery life that bad? Phone is 1 week old, so battery shouldnt be broken...
2. I would like to know, if anyone can tell me about voltages? I would like to reduce voltages, but i'm a nooby and don't want to "test" it, cause i don't want to break the phone
Can anyone tell me, how much i can reduce arm voltage/int voltage? I'm speaking of my 100 MHz/800Mhz setting, it's still quite fast and i want better battery life, i think reducing voltages could help.
I'm open to any suggestion about getting a better battery life at best i would like the nexus to live 2 day without charges, with medium usage, if that is even possible.
cheers
All you can do is TEST there is NO one size fits all
but generally you can go about -25 across the board .. someone with more knowledge than me can correct me if i'm wrong =]
i get +26 hours easily on moderate to heavy use but my roms don't last for more than 10 hours
Thanks for your answer.
Does anyone else have any idea about the quite bad battery life?
I forgot to mention that i use Go Launcher Ex with a Touchwiz 4 Theme and the Go Keyboard, but i don't think they suck up all the energy :/
pisses me off quite a bit, 26h+ with moderate to heavy usage would be a dream!
Like it's now i need to charge it every day, and on weekend twice, once before i go, and over night (well while i sleep, doesnt need to be night

come on , be happy with what you have
i even have to use 2 batteries if in heave use !
try set display on auto-change or medium brilliantness
peronally , i think display is taking away more juice besides CPU...
kill GPS BT 2G/3G WIFI when you don't need them , specially GPS
and if you are not in hurry , use 2G data connection instead of 3G, because 3G took double even trouble juice then 2G
also , maybe some applications running at high CPU usage background , but i think this is highly unlikely
forgot to mention , also kill NFC

Hey, Thanks for you answer.
I forgot to mention.
Wifi and GPS are off, only turning it on if i need it(and that's rare). NFC is always off, i don't need it. Brightness is off auto-change and instead on the lowest value i can chose in the settings (still bright enough)
I'm checking RAM and CPU usage from time to time, so there shouldn't be the problem. Well i have 3g on all the time, but still, even then shouldn't i be able to get 20h+ or so?
What i also forgot to mention, i've the SLCD, the i9023 version. I know it has higher battery usage because of the display, but well, i think 13h is a bit low.
@polobunny: thanks, i will look into it

When i got my phone, the battery sucked. But after a week or so after some battery cycles it got better. So i advice you just to wait.
I don't use auto brightness, No auto sync but i have data always tuned on. I am able to get 10-20 hours with moderate usage.

no really ,my phone is i9023 as well , by the way , it's Super Clear LCD , SLCD is other thing of SONY.
SA screen only saves power when it is on dark color such as black , grey etc, when it is on white color , it takes juices same as(even more ? don't know for sure) Super Clear LCD , this has no different ,also you may noticed that default wall paper of Nexus S is dark color , that's why
back the time when i was using stock , i could easy hang on a day , but ever since i change to MIUI and brought second battery ... i have to use second battery on MIUI if my usage is same as the time i was using stock

about 3G ,
i have some power saver like applications , which have function of estimated work time
it shows , at this moment , 59% battery = 3G internet 1 hour and 39 minutes ,
other one shows 2 hours and 12 minutes
there may be some variants but ... you know , 59% power only last about 2 hours of 3G ...
---------- Post added at 04:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:25 PM ----------
you should have try stock first , because in my opinion , stock has longest battery life
i haven't used NSCollab , so i can't say anything about it ...

I used stock for the first week, it wasn't better imho, atleast that's what my feeling says didn't look at the actual times i lasts with stock :O
but feels better with nscollab
About the display, thought SLCD was short for Super Clear LCD, well atleast you got what i meant
I thought about power saving apps too, wouldn't be bad if phone does only 2g if the screen is off etc, but first i wanted to get a good rom/kernel and settings
i think i will try ICS stock rom if its out, look if that gets me a better battery life, or then flash around till i'm satisfied
Hello. I'm new with the account here, but been reading this forum for years.
I'm creating this thread because my new Nexus 5 (which I have for 20 days now) is overheating more than a normal mobile device should.
When i bought it, it had 4.4.4 Kit kat android, and I had that one for about 5 days, and in that time, I didn't notice any overheating, or maybe didn't pay attention, can't remember really.
But after installing official Lollipop 5.0.1, the device is heating pretty good even when browsing internet for 5 minutes, at about 30-40% brightness.
**** Please tell me if some of your devices are acting the same, and is it worth a try to install back an older android to try if it will stop overheating, or my device may be faulty and should I take it back for another one (or maybe switch to LG G2) ?
Because I'm still unable to post image links, i will write it down:
- Ambient temperature: 23 degrees Celsius
- The temperature sensor is taped on the back side, at the side of camera, this is where it overheats most. (even if not using camera)
- Phone temp after staying on standby with screen off: 28 C (it's not warm but it is warmer than desk which it is sitting on)
- After staying idle on home screen with screen on for 10 minutes (50% brightness): 30.5 C
- After chatting on Messenger for 10 minutes: 34.3 C (feels warm)
- After recording video for 4 minutes: 41 Celsius!!! (almost uncomfortably hot in the whole upper half of the phone, both the back side and the screen)
- After 15 minutes letting it cool down, with screen off of course, it is 38 C (still hot to touch), and it stays like that untill I reboot the phone, then it cools down.
The test took about 50 minutes, and after that, battery was drained for about 25%.
-While charging, the phone does not overheat, just gets a little warm which is OK. (haven't tried wireless charging)
P.S. I don't play games on the phone...
Please act quick in case I should return the phone...
the only time my phone gets hot is when im intensively doing a lot of things..
for example.. im playing ingress, have tether ON, and my two sons are using their tablets connected to my phone playing ingress too..
but if i turn off the game and turn off tether, it cools down..
to me it sounds u have something intesively using your CPU and perhaps GPS and other radios.
hold power button.. when PWR OFF shows, long press it and reboot into SAFE MODE...
use the phone for a bit and see if it gets warm... this should tell you if its apps installed.
I only used wifi, no tethering, no GPS, 3G, NFC or any other radios, cell signal is good so phone is not searching for it.
- In safe mode, it still gets warm when using camera. When browsing internet and watching images in google search, also but just mild warm..
- But after sitting and thinking, I've found a problem! After recording with camera and leaving it to cool down, it didn't cool down because it had to make an effort to upload that 5 min video on Google drive via Auto backup!
After turning the Auto-backup off, it is now much cooler!
I will post tomorrow with the results, if something changes...
Anyway, thank you!
First of all, "warm" doesn't mean anything.
Battery temperature does not mean much either, as the CPU is what generates the most heat.
There is a battery temperature throttle that reduces the CPU frequency, but it is almost entirely pointless as the CPU will always reach it's own throttle temperatures MUCH, MUCH earlier than the battery will. The CPU starts throttling at 65C CPU temp (NOT battery temp), and shuts itself down at about 105C CPU temp. Unless your battery somehow reaches a batterytemp of 70C+ (nearly impossible because the CPU will always hit it's throttle first), then I would never even take it into any sort of consideration unless you have a physical battery defect.
Using the camera generates heat since it's CPU and power intensive.
Using the phone in general will generate heat.
Keep in mind that mobile devices are passively cooled, not actively cooled with a fan/liquid.
Not sure what you're so worried about.
Lower your brightness
Lethargy, thank you for a short physics lesson. I'm already into physics and cooling systems so all is clear. I was just worried a bit because all of my previous phones weren't getting this warm (hot), but also never had a multi-core processor in phone eather, maybe that's the reason why I never experienced this before.
Battery temp (measured with app) gets up to 40-42 degrees Celsius, while the phone case gets up to 41 when recording video. Of course that temp won't damage the device, I'm not worried about the processor, but that temp is degrading battery life, in long term.
And about the brightness, phone is not meant to be used at lowest brightness all the time, so that shouldn't be an excuse for high temps. Just sayin'...

The only thing that sounded odd was how it wasn't cooling down until you rebooted, but it sounds like you figured that out with the automatic upload setting.
41-42c battery temp can be normal after prolonged usage, though personally I usually see that after a short gaming session. My brightness is around 40% and high brightness will cause extra heat.
Otherwise the phone is very thin so you can feel the stacked SoC and RAM heat up through the skin fairly easily, right around the camera area as you mentioned.
I think each device and CPU is slightly different and can vary by a few degrees under load as well.

Your temperatures are fine and you shouldn't worry about it. It's average for a Nexus 5, and there are throttles/shutdown temps anyways, for both the battery and CPU. I've had mine for a year and there hasn't been any sort of issue, normal usage should be negligible to the condition of the battery.
Ok, everything seems to be ok then. Now I can go to sleep without worrying Thanks guys!

Hi team, This is Sudip here, I have oneplus 1 64 gig variant, it seems to be over heating, normally when the phone is kept idle the CPU temp is hovering around 40-50 degree C (kept idle for long time the CPU comes down to 35-39 degree C), while browsing and normal usage it is between 50-60 degree C and while gaming like modern combat 4 or 5 it reaches around 65-67 degree C, but it cools down quite fast, I have tried 2 different app "cpu temp.." by mooncake and "temp monitor" by dustinmj , both of those shows quite same, the Battery temp never exceeds 41 degree. I already got one replaced by amazon.in..this is happening with the replaced one.. is there anything to worry about? or is it absolutely normal? the weather is cold in India right now, don't know what would happen in summer.
I will really be very grateful if anyone helps me to be clear about the temperature standards of the devices, I don't have much technical knowledge regarding these so I am really requesting you experts to help me with your knowledge. (I have 5-6 days left with this replacement product to get this replaced if needed as well )..please someone share some knowledge...
Thank you.

cpu by itself is unlikely to run hot. you'll have to figure out which app is stressing the cpu.. use an elimination approach to narrow down the problem.. good luck!
---------- Post added at 01:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:25 PM ----------
also try turning off location and mobile radio.. try to use only wifi to figure out if issue happens..

Just yesterday.. i had my phone running a little hotter than usual.. figured out Facebook messenger was asking for permission to access location almost every few seconds.. in addition to that due to mobile radio active bug..my apps were keeping the radio active constantly leading to issue. you can use privacy guard in the settings to block access to apps as desired.. this should help as well.
Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy S9+ stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Only two days in, but this is one thing I'm really loving compared to the Moto X Pure I came from. Lots of time with maps/gps/screen on time and some gaming plus picture taking yesterday, NEVER felt any heat coming from the phone like I did on past few devices.
during charging yes!
Warm as hell when plugged in after only a few minutes. But during normal usage and playing games, I don't feel much at all... except for the warmth my hand eventually creates.
if i use 4g and play spotify while driving it gets warm but not really that hot that you cannot hold it long
Heat up while using mobile data (2g/3g/4g)
well it's been 5days sincei am using Samsung Galaxy S9+ i digged most of it's feature and also performance and found while using Mobile Datamy phone got warmed els i played Asphalt8, Assassin's Creed, Need For Speed it stayed cool but if you are playing high graphics game while charging you can feel little heat over all it's awesome

I also have Exynos version and no overheating unless I charge it or use the camera for a long period, which is considered normal.
Mines hitting around 34-37 degrees now on normal usage is that ok?
Exynos here. Terrible battery life. Always warm to the touch. It stays warm even when I use it in power saving mode. No social media apps nothing. Really pissed off.
My s9+ never heats up unless I use it in direct sunlight with full brightness. Even then it isn't as warm as my previous phones. It doesn't heat up when I'm charging though granted I never use it during that time. Exynos version.
Stays warm even with the slightest casual phone usage.
No game playing, no video watching, no social media browsing, though have a few installed.Exynos variant, S9 plus.
Mine heats up too. For no reason
Haven't noticed any heating or even warmth except with heavy use like active GPS navigation or gaming. Even gaming feels cooler than previous S7. I suspect those having heating issues also have relatively poor battery life - something not right with their device perhaps.
I think all with 9810 chips have these iseues. The issues are random and not constant.

Used the SM-G965F for 1 month off ebay to have better custom rom support and all and then switched to the SM-G9650 available locally. Hands down G-9650 is every bit better especially battery and no heating.

I believe It's due to the poorly optimized scheduler triggering the smaller a55 cores which are bigger than last generations a53s producing more heat and killing batterylife. It's not constant, doesn't happen everytime but at the same time - unpredictable.

Friends there is some logic related to screen brightness and phone temperature. If the phone temperature is above 40°C, the creen in direct sunlight becomes dim even in full brightness and difficult to read. My iphone 11 screen remains bright in same conditions. The issue also existed for my earlied Note10+ handset. Does anybody face same issue in high temperature countries like India?
Not a good idea to view in direct sunlight for very long.
The phone dissipates heat through the screen... it can't when the screen is baking in the sun!
104 F is well within tolerance levels but is more stressful for the battery.
What you might not be seeing are other temp read outs from other temp sensors (there's about a dozen or more) on the phone which might be being pushed to their critical levels.
>When you see a phone doing this best practice is to turn off the screen and leave cool down. Phones that aren't optimized correctly can heat up rapidly even with no foreground apks running.
>If turning off the screen doesn't seem to be helping, power down the phone and allow to cool before using!
Wrapping a damp rag around backside of the phone can also be used to bring down the temp especially in dry climates
Same here but not really hot phone
Yes i got the same problem. But my phone is not very warm at all and it dimms by sunlight.. i think phone outside is max 40°c. I wonder why they do this, they put a display with 1600nits in and then it cant bring all because its too "warm" got this on none of other phones. Only samsung problems. And this **** cost 1200. I really dont understand what theyre doing

I tested this. My n20u warms so rapidly up even if i doing nothing or shut it down. And i was only for 3-5mins outside at sun. Outside temp was like 25-27°c.
My phone was not very hot not even really warm, but display dimmed very hard so i cant see anything outside.
