Heat - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Real Life Review

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy S9+ stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Only two days in, but this is one thing I'm really loving compared to the Moto X Pure I came from. Lots of time with maps/gps/screen on time and some gaming plus picture taking yesterday, NEVER felt any heat coming from the phone like I did on past few devices.

during charging yes!
Warm as hell when plugged in after only a few minutes. But during normal usage and playing games, I don't feel much at all... except for the warmth my hand eventually creates.

if i use 4g and play spotify while driving it gets warm but not really that hot that you cannot hold it long

Heat up while using mobile data (2g/3g/4g)
well it's been 5days sincei am using Samsung Galaxy S9+ i digged most of it's feature and also performance and found while using Mobile Datamy phone got warmed els i played Asphalt8, Assassin's Creed, Need For Speed it stayed cool but if you are playing high graphics game while charging you can feel little heat over all it's awesome

Mine overheats bad. I have the Exynos model which seems to be plagued with issues though.

I also have Exynos version and no overheating unless I charge it or use the camera for a long period, which is considered normal.

Mines hitting around 34-37 degrees now on normal usage is that ok?

Exynos here. Terrible battery life. Always warm to the touch. It stays warm even when I use it in power saving mode. No social media apps nothing. Really pissed off.

My s9+ never heats up unless I use it in direct sunlight with full brightness. Even then it isn't as warm as my previous phones. It doesn't heat up when I'm charging though granted I never use it during that time. Exynos version.

Stays warm even with the slightest casual phone usage.
No game playing, no video watching, no social media browsing, though have a few installed.Exynos variant, S9 plus.

Mine heats up too. For no reason

Haven't noticed any heating or even warmth except with heavy use like active GPS navigation or gaming. Even gaming feels cooler than previous S7. I suspect those having heating issues also have relatively poor battery life - something not right with their device perhaps.

I think all with 9810 chips have these iseues. The issues are random and not constant.

Used the SM-G965F for 1 month off ebay to have better custom rom support and all and then switched to the SM-G9650 available locally. Hands down G-9650 is every bit better especially battery and no heating.

I believe It's due to the poorly optimized scheduler triggering the smaller a55 cores which are bigger than last generations a53s producing more heat and killing batterylife. It's not constant, doesn't happen everytime but at the same time - unpredictable.

Does the second one support LTE band 3(1800) and band 40(2300)? Any idea?

Does the device get hot?

Does it get hot under normal usage? How much degree celcius are you getting while doing basic task and watching video?
No no heat problems on mine. I believe Sony has introduced new technology for the heat problem.

Nope no signs of phone getting warmer. Played perfectly fine.
My XZ or XZs didn't get hot or even slightly warm, exactly the same deal with this, I would say it runs even cooler!
That link only offers me a max of 1080/60 not 4k

The phone is runs cool and somehow has what's turning out to be quite a long battery life

Well, I have been testing my XZP for two now. It is getting warm - definitely. If you put it under extreme load, it´s getting warm, even that warm your palms get a little sweaty - but not uncompfy warm. My LG G4 in comparison got that hot you´d barely wanna touch it.
Look for an app on Google play called "epic citadel" and run it.
Left it going for about 30 minutes and walked around a bit. Phone got Luke warm. Used 8% of the battery.
Not so much hot to me

Any and all computer(s) CPU's will get warm to hot depending on the load. This is the nature of the beast. But mine does not get warm at all the way I use it. My battery life is phenomenal!
Gets warm if you play games for a long period, but nowhere near hot. Also I noticed that, compared to my old phone, the warmth is pretty much the same on the entire back. It's not just hot where the chipset is. All in all, the phone is awesome regarding heath control.
The phone does get hot after a while.
It's cool most of the time, and even if it gets hot, it has great cooling so leaving it alone cools it off in minutes.
As for the temperature, i was doing a stress test the other day (3D) and the phone seems to have capped at 38-39 Celsius degrees (that is slightly higher than body temperature so you can definitely feel it). I didn't check temperature after that though.
It also gets warmer while both watching and shooting at 4K, or high speed (even 1080p though).
However trust me, if you had the Z3 Compact like I did, that phone was a freaking furnace. My battery was affected by it. If want to use my Z3C as a gps in my car, i have to shove it in front of the AC to keep it cool otherwise I'm afraid it's going to evolve into a Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
So this phone is a big big improvement. Though I'd like a phone someday that definitely doesn't get hot. But maybe that's too much to ask.
As I'm typing this, after about 30 minutes of active use, my battery is 35 celsius degrees. From normal use.
A cell phone is just too small to dissipate heat in a very efficient manner. That is why super fast, and powerful, gaming desktop PC's have several fans installed in them along with huge heat sinks sitting right on top of the CPU. The heat sinks are larger than this entire phone! I am an IT Systems Engineer and if you've ever had the opportunity to go to a large data center where servers are housed you will quickly notice the high volume of moving air in the entire area. It can even get quite cold in some data centers all for the same reason... Computers can get very hot! So the fact that OEM's can keep these things as cool as they do, with the CPU housed in such a small, airtight space, is really a marvel of engineering.
Hello , the phone doesn't get hot like my z2 is used to be , I've managed twice to get the phone (on purpose) , but with normal usage 4K video / gaming etc it won't get hot unless you spam many task at hight speed

No only on Galaxy 8 but most of the models get heated while extended use. It is better to keep it from using it prolonged hours. I have not heard any incident of blast but it is good to be safe.
It is not about particular brand but it happens with almost all of the brand. If you use any mobile devices for prolonged hours it will get heated and sometimes may be exploded.

Lol....3 posts and you can came to spot this nonsense?!
Using TomTom app for over an hour yesterday and my S8 really contributed to global warming. No it wasn't charging at the same time and not attached to the windshield nor in direct sun-light.
On the other hand I experienced this same effect with previous smartphones ?
You wouldn't expect to use a PC/Laptop for an hour or more and it not get hot. The same goes for a phone which is essentially a small PC!
max Temp with mine under load is 43°c (Aida64). Battery is a bit lower.
Anyways most if not all of the modern SoCs are getting warmer then odler Models (Which is normal) . I think thats why many Devices have a Heartpipe build in now.
The only SoC where i was worried was the Snapdragon 810 in the HTC M9.
I found this device (G950F just to be more precise) to be a bit cooler than the previous iterations (and I've used all it's predecessors), probably the large footprint has an influence here as well.
Mine gets a little warm, but I haven't gotten it uncomfortably so, regardless of what I've thrown at it so far. Seems to top out in that "noticeably warm but not uncomfortably so" range, which is nice
Had my phone for only 24H no heat yet! but the same happened with my s7 edge for some reason even after re flashing the stock rom with ODIN it started heating like crazy! also I haven't taken it outside yet, my s7 edge's battery goes up to 37 outside! even up to 38!
Had mine for 2 months now. It warms up after prolonged use but what do you expect? It's normal! Nothing unusual

Much better than the s6, s7, s8 heat machine on which you can fry eggs .
Heck, even when installing apps, update firmware or while charging the phone, it doesn't get insupportable to touch like other flagships.
Definitely the coolest phone I ever owned!! Especially comparing to my old phone Xiaomi Mi Note Pro with the Snapdragon 810 that was known to run hot lol
For me has been the reverse of some people here. My One plus 5 is heating a little bit more than my S8 Plus and my Xiaomi Mi Mix. But it's not heating up to the point that it's uncomfortable I said it's in the normal range.

I came from a vintage phone from LG G Pro with a snapdragon 600, and i can say this is alot hotter comparing to the op5. When i play clash of clans for a few mins, it heats up to 77 degrees celsius which can be a bother to battery and other components.
Here at op5 i can play the same game and cpu is just 30 degrees celsius! Measured with cooltool.
Compared to my Nexus 6p, this phone is cool as ice, my Nexus would sometimes get so hot that you couldn't touch it.
To be fair, my last phone was the LG G4. About an hour after plugging that in to my Chevy Volt's infotainment center (with Android Auto), I could pretty much cook an egg on that phone. Even with the back off, the LG G4 would overheat and report that it's recharging was temporarily halted. There's nothing like that going on, with the OnePlus 5.
My 8/128gb is overheating, especially the zone right in between the camera and the 1+ logo.
The CPU temperature is constantly around 40°c in light use over wi-fi. Is it normal? What is the right range of temperatures? Anybody experiencing this overheating in the rear zone?

Ok but the back becomes so hot that is difficult to hold it.
i have played asphalt xtreme, injustice 2, marvel future fight, close to about 30-40 mins, and frequently switching between games, and no sign of any overheating at all.
I used to own a zenfone 2, and it got real hot, not even warm.
Fantastic device for gaming, OP5!!
This is the coldest phone i ever had.
2 weeks and I have not had any heat issues my previous 6P use to get very very warm.

This is a big improvement I have seen over my Nexus 6P. The ole Snapdragon 810 would get pretty warm in my hands on heavy use. The new one feels cool at all times. This has also helped tremendously in the battery life department too.

Same. My 6p got warm too fast and throttled after 5 mibs of normal use. The Pixel 2 is just perfect, it gets a little bit warm in heavy usage like it should.
I play pubg constantly and I never feel worried about heat. Even while charging and playing it feels safe.
Two minute queries-
1. Is the top speaker about 20 percent-ish lower in volume than the bottom one?
2. Recording a video for about 9-10 mins got the temp of the battery to 40.7°C when the ambient temperature outside is 24 °C.
Although it has fallen down very quickly after that but is it normal?
Thanks.

2. 9-10 minutes of continuous video recording is a lot. I never record more than 1-1:30 minute segments. Anything longer gets boring or would get trimmed anyway. Even with multiple bursts in a row, it does get warm but I've never measured.

Exynos version heats up a lot when pushed to max not as efficient as sd 835 845 devices that were still maintaining cool temps. Thankfully using the "Medium Power Saving" mode with cpu at 70% is a decent solution for a cold device, and still getting performance similar to exynos9810/sd845 and zero stutters. Exynos team seem to make the cpu a bit too powerful to be thermally decent every year, this performance should have been last year's device so they could underclock and get colder thermals. But last year's device temps were a lot higher, this is not as bad as Exynos 9810.
Edit: few days later, yeah the thermals are really bad on this when the device is pushed heavily, It does not have the liquid cooling tech that's in the bigger plus, battery goes upto 47c when intensely using the camera, which is baddd. If heat is an issue for you, this device might not be the one to go for.
I'm using a G970U1 and found that it heats up much more than any other phone I have ever used. However, the battery life is reasonable - yesterday the SOT was 8hrs when the battery level hit 10%.
Today while I was driving with Google Maps running, it suddenly closed Google Maps after about 30min's driving with a message saying that it was closed due to overheating. And it refused to execute any apps until it cooled down. When it cooled down enough to run an app, the battery temperature was reported at 45.8 deg C.
I have never had this kind of situation with any other phone.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with those temps, sounds pretty normal to me while running apps. Again, our normal body temperature is 36.6C and you should take the ambient temp into account.
It’s heating very often.
I have had mine for a couple months now, so far so good no issues with heating.
