corrosion inside usb port - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

When looking into the USB port I noticed there is a slight build up of green gunk which probably came from environmental moisture (not sure).
Possibly related to this is that when connecting PC to phone, some USB cables won't work (and sometimes power surge), some only works in one orientation, some only works via the wall charger.
Before I send my phone in for repair, just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem, and what you did to fix it. Any help and comments will be appreciated.

Hi, i had this corrosion too, what i did (maybe not so sure way) its cleaning the corrosion that was between the pins of the connector, so first i turned off the phone and then i removed it with a needle, be careful with the pins. When you finish use a brush to clean the port a little more and remove the dust it may have, you can put alcohol on the brush.
If your cables are not working you can try to press a bit both horizontal sides of the connector to ensure the pins are always touching. Thats what i did when my usb c cable started to connect and disconnect the phone randomly when i just moved it a little.

Hey. Welcome to the club mate. I screwed up my charging port after a trip in Thailand. Some underwater diving & swimming caused the green junk in my port.
I had the same issue such as yours after the trip, Charging was fine but connection through usb on a computer was screwed up.
What I did was, cleaned the charging port with alcohol (Nail polish remover), let it dry & sent it to a nearby Sony Service centre.
They replaced my mother board for free (In warranty). The best part was I had my bootloader unlocked & they gave me a new motherboard with a locked bootloader
Sony service center employees don't know **** about Bootloaders in my country, I'm from India btw.

Flex Cables in phone - Information

Hi friends
I am having an handset(Tilt) with flex cable problem, but wondering if flex cable can solve my phones problem where it is doing the following:
-Not accepting the SIM.
-phone is getting hanged any times, speed is also very pathetic.
-keypad is pressed on its own.
-Phone is not accepting any charger but charging with PC USB.
These are some of the major problems, I wish if someone could help me out in knowing what work does a flex cable plays, coz the technician is charging so much to change the flex cable & giving me no assurance as to what problems will be solved. I would like to know from some of those technicians here who knows something about hardware. Mike I am talking about you specially.
I would like to write this in our XDA encyclopedia given the case I get proper knowledge about it.
Looking forward to answers.
This is quite difficult to answer without testing. The SIM not being recognised will in itself slow down the phone or even create a full blown crash.
It's not stated what flex cable we are talking about. Flex Cables are just multi wire connections between circuit boards. Phones often have 3, 4 or more flex cables. For example between the the physical keypad and the motherboard or the d-pad and the LCD screen or between screen and motherboard etc etc.
It IS possible a flex cable can get damaged. This normally happens in phones with a slide out keyboard where the flex-cable has to roll back and forth as the keyboard slides in and out. However, such a cable would not I think change the charging behaviour of the phone.
It charges on PC connection but not charger connection. To me that normally indicates a USB port connection problem - bent pin in the slot, possibly even crossed pins or a cracked or dry solder joint between the usb port and the motherboard.
Another thing to consider is whether all the battery contacts are making good contact with the phone. Here again the multiple connections between battery and motherboard can become dry or cracked leading to erratic or underpowered connections.
The keypad being pressed on it's own can again be caused by different things:
1
It could be a faulty or loosley connected flex cable
2
Pressure being put on the digitizer screen by something under the bezel or just a damaged digitizer layer
3
A key that is not releasing from the keyboard properly (is it always the same key or group of keys?)
4
Moisture at many different places inside the phone, including keyboard, d-pad etc. Even when dried out, the residue or oxidisation can continue to cause problems.
So, I would not rule out a flex-cable problem, but it might not be the only fault. Unfortunately then, the technician you spoke to may be correct and it is not possible to guarantee it will solve all problems. Having said that, I would want to say to the technician that I am not going to pay for a new flex if it does not solve any of the problems.
This is where it becomes difficult to decide whether to go for paid for repair or to attempt the job yourself.

HTC Sensation has stopped charging

My HTC Sensation, has stopped charging altogether. I took it off charging and when i put it on 10 min later, the LED didnt light up, so i got a toothpick and tried cleaning thecharging port just in case something tiny went in and was blocking it to charge, but that didnt work. The phone was working fine until the battery died and i still cant get it to charge. Now im wondering whats broken, to all those repair specialists out there, what could be broken? I can buy a charging port from ebay, but is that it? or could it be anything else.
I was looking to upgrade soon but was waiting for some christmas deals to pop up, but my phone decided to let me down.
Any help appreciated, thanks guys

Did you solved the problem by buying a new phone?, the problem could be the USB connector himself, if you are very handy you can repair it yourself...

maybe your battery died
I'm assuming you've got it fixed / moved on to a different phone / are using an external charger, but this thread got bumped to the top so I figured I'd chime in.
I had this problem as well. Unfortunately, the usb port is soldered on the board and not a separate unit attached via ribbon cable. The solder joint holding the port on the pcb cracked, resulting in a loose port. Over time, this lead to the pins breaking off the pcb. For a while, I was able to get it to charge by applying pressure to the usb plug. Finally, I took it apart and resoldered it, reinforcing the solder joints for the port itself. It's not too difficult if you use some flux. Just line up the pins and tack the port back on. Then rub flux over the pins and tack them with the soldering iron. No additional solder is needed or recommended-- the pins are in close proximity and it'd be easy to bridge them.

Hepl to fix a microUSB cable please?

Look at the cable on the microUSB back side, you'll see two pins popping out a little. Issue i had with that cable is while i tried to put the connector in the right position (it was bended) i pushed in the wrong side and those pins where not popping out anymore..
Which is a problem since they help phone to detect while you connect & disconnect cable, maybe more. I tried to make the pins pop out using a needle. Worked for some time, until days ago. While trying to fix, i realised that these pins will actually pop in/out depending on how you bend the connector.
So i bended it to make them pop out just as if brand new. Problem is now, even though the phone detects (and hold tight) the cable/AC power, the phone won't charge. Just like if no power was coming it. I tried various things, but it won't change. This cable is much longer/better than others, hope i can fix it..

MicroUSB connector malfunction on Z5 (bad contact? liquid electrical cleaner?)

Hi all,
It's been two years I have been using my Z5 Compact, and the MicroUSB connector is hardly usable now.
I of course tried several cables.
It is very difficult to charge the telephone. I don't know exactly what the problem is. I tried cleaning with a dry air bomb (for keyboards etc.), but to no avail. Seems like a bad contact.
Is it possible to use electrical parts liquid cleaner to properly clean the USB contacts?
Anybody having the same experience?
MF
I had the same problem, usb cable didn't fit in entirely.
Culprit was a piece from the inside of my jeans pocket was pushed deep inside my usb port. It was pretty much stuck in there but once I got it out the problems where solved and I switched to magnetic usb cable to prevent this.
I got it out using very tiny pliers and a magnifying loupe.
Hope this helps..
Regards
Mine is going to die sometime, soon, too! i already bought a new one on ebay, laying ready to be installed here! In a couple of days i´ll take a hair dryer and then i´ll peel of the back cover and replace that broken connector
update: 17th of june!
Just wanted to tell you guys, it worked! I just replaced the USB Connector with the one i bought on Ebay, price was around 4 Euro or so, not much i think
It was rather easy, as i already own the needed tools (a very very small philips screw driver, and a tool to go underneath the back cover and a hairdryer)
took about 20 minutes or less!
Just use the hairddryer to heat up the back cover, then use the special tool (or a thin knife?) to loose the back cover and peel it off
then you have to remove 2 screws on the lower part, then you can remove some sort of a "bar" over the usb connector! next you have to lift the "motherboard" on the lower part (yes it moves down to the usb connector) but first disconnect the usb connector! then pull out the broken usb, shove the new one in and do all the above in reverse order!

Charging Problem

So before my xz premium completely stopped charging my phone used to randomly stop charging and charged very slow I used quick charge 3.0 and certified usb c cable I had to put the usb type c cable in a certain position to get my phone charging but after a while it completely stopped charging I inspected the port it was fine no bent nor broken cleaned the port but it didn’t charge after sometime I started messing with the phone so I found a way to charge it when I put pressure on the bottom of the phone from front and rear of phone where usb port and flex cable is connected it starts charging but I have to put a lot of pressure to get it to charging I don’t know about hardware so I am here If someone can guide me ty.
Is the charge manager enabled?
In this case the manager try to think at which time you disconneythe the phone from charger and stopped after a while to continue in front of disconnect (or what he think at which time it is)
No the charge manager or (Battery Care) is not enabled but I opened the device myself because I thought it might be a loose connection of charging port's flex cable but it was connected to the motherboard fine but the situation was the same I pressed the flex cable where it connects to the motherboard and the phone started charging I think it's some sort of motherboard problem as it happened with some other xz premium users as well.
P.S:Replacing the charging port didn't fixed the problem.
Hello,
I had a similar problem.
At first it only carried in certain positions or pressing the region where the flat connection. After 1 months it stopped completely.
My problem was in the motherboard charge connector, I needed to buy a new connector to replace with solder. After 30 days, everything continues to function normally.

can u guide me how to do it?
If u know any trusted and skilled repair person just tell him what the problem is and make sure the repair person fix it the right way as described otherwise he might end up damaging ur phone.

Changing the port won't fix the issue it can only be resolved if u change the btb connector on the motherboard.
Anyone knowing how to do it?
Hi. Stripped phone down and removed old BtB connector. How do you solder the new part to the motherboard. Is it just the four corners you solder or do all x10 pins on each side need to be soldered?
Can somebody who has changed a BtB put a step by step guide if poss?

ok update i've been trying to repair it/solder it in a couple 3rd repair (because there's no sony xperia service center here in indonesia..) and they say they can't, then i wen't to this repair shop (this one looks not promising) then i got a message after 3 day they say they can't repair it, i was hopeless, i left my phone there.., and after 1 and a half month i think, i finally went to get my phone, and when i arrives to get my phone they charge me 15$, in my head i was thinking "why they charge me? they didn't even fix it"
then the repair man said "we fix it" i was shock they didn't even message me and said it was fixed (they have to) so i pay the 15$ and check the phone its completely normal it's charging the fast charge work, but.. they reinstalled everything (factory reset) kinda strange.. but it's find ok so that's it
