Hotspot blocked, need a work around - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

So I have the 4GB plan on cricket and unlike my Sony Z3 compact the HTC U11 returns an error stating that I need a hotspot plan to use the mobile hotspot feature.
This is screwed up because unlocked phones shouldn't be disabling the mobile hotspot due to a carrier wanting to be a jerk.
I bet I could put the sim back in my Z3 compact and use the wifi mobile hotspot just fine. This is fairly disappointing as it just feels so wrong to be locked out of this feature. Guess that's what happens after owning a international galaxy S2 and Sony Z3 compact.
Thanks for any suggestions on the matter.

Ever figure out a way around this?

unlocked refers to SIM being unlocked...anyways, it's pretty easy to unlock hotspot, but you'll need root
open /system/customize/ACC/default.xml
make these changes:

9

to

0

item type="integer" name="hotspot_rule">6

to
item type="integer" name="hotspot_rule">0

OMJ's answer worked for me on my Sprint U11. Thanks much!

Nexus 5 without data plan on att

Hey everyone, I have the classic question of how to avoid the data plan. So a couple questions.
I want the nexus 5, and am always on wifi. I know att forces you to get a data plan with a smartphone but I dont want one.
Can I get a feature phone or dumb phone and swap the sims?
Will att detect the imei on the nexus 5?
Can I get the imei on one of my old dumbphone's and spoof it onto the nexus 5?
I will not switch carriers or plans, so please no "you should just go with t-mobile" answers
If spoofing is illegal to talk about on these forums, sorry I was ignorant.
Nobody has the phone yet and its a good bet att will figure it out they always do.
SIM swapping won't work. There's no possible way to use a smartphone on AT&T without paying for a data plan.
after doing research, you can apparently change the imei relatively easily using
Code:
su
echo 'AT+EGMR=1,7,"imei" >/dev/pttycmd1
Does this actually change it?
If you could change the imei to a dumbphone, it would work right?
AT&T will figure it out by your IMEI and it is illegal to change your IMEI.
The issue has been argued over many times, and has never really been proven legal or illegal. Anyways, I see nothing wrong with changing the nexus 5's imei to a phone's imei that I will break rendering it useless. My question now is does that snippet of code really change the imei or does it change the text only in the about phone section.

First of all, I believe you're missing a single-quote, I think it should be like this:
Code:
su
echo 'AT+EGMR=1,7,"imei"' >/dev/pttycmd1
(notice there is a double qoute " and then a single quote ' after imei)
Also, secondly, I think this works with older phones, but I have had no luck getting it to work with my Nexus 5

[Q] Hotspot On Tmo

i have a question currently i am on tmo post paid acct with no hotspot plan. with unlocked xperia zl (non tmo phone) i am able to use hotspot on stock android. i dont get any message that i need to upgrade plan in order to use hotspot feature. however when same SIM card is inserted into n5 when i use hotspot i get a message to upgrade plan to hotspot in order to use the feature.
my question is my xperia zl is able to bypass carrier restriction whereas n5 is not able to? both are unlocked and unrooted phone.
i know i can root or install 3rd party apps on n5 to achieve hotspot feature. i just want to understand how xperia is managing to by pass on stock rom.

What plan are you on? I keep hearing everyone having this issue, but I can tether freely with my n5. I'm stock unrooted with an unlocked bootloader. I have the new simple choice plan that includes tethering.
But to answer your question, Google has put a restriction in the stock rom, whereas Sony hasn't.

i am on biz classic unlimited plan which does not include hotspot need to pay separately. i have a feeling that google might have given imei info to the telco even though it is unlocked. whereas in case of xperia zl they may not have give imei no hence they are unable to block.
is it possible to identify correct model of your n5 is it american model (d820) or international model (d821)

If you're asking me what model I have its the d280. You can check by going into the bootloader. It will say the model number there.
i am also on d820 so basically both of our models are same. may i know what plan you are on?
on 2nd note could you also tell me what is your apn name? my apn name is on fast.t-mobile.com i tried epc.tmobile.com then i dont any data network. however my xperia apn name is epc.tmobile.com

Just call T-Mobile and update your plan to one that includes hotspot. The current version of your plan costs the same but enables hotspot. I was in the same situation.

Same issue here,
I finally have time to test this yesterday and tried to browse from a tablet. I was presented with a T-Mobile page to register my phone number. This is not the case on Galaxy S4 running Google Edition rom.
I can't wait until the developers find a way to bypass the restrictions

Help with phone that thinks its not locked but it is

Hey guys, sorry for the confusing title.
Pretty much I got a Z5 from a friend who changed over to iPhone, it was locked to his network (Telstra) however, it shouldnt have been. as it was on a post paid plan and they dont lock devices on those plans.
Heres where stuff gets weird, so I went to a Telstra shop and asked them to unlock it, and they said it shouldnt be locked. so they checked anyway and said 'strange, it is locked, heres an unlock code'
so I was armed with an unlock code.
When I put in a sim from my carrier, Optus, the icon changes from the 'no sim' icon to just greyed out reception bars.
If I go to the mobile operators screen, it will not select Optus.
The small home icon is on Optus, but when I try and select it it says 'unable to register on network'
I purchased a Telstra $2 sim card to test, insert it and activate it and it appears to work perfectly!
I am not getting a prompt to enter my unlock code, so from what I can see theres nothing I can do D:
I dont have the original receipt so even though the handset is <1 year old I can't go to Sony (can i?) for help.
Heres some info you may ask me for:
status of SIM lock via USSD code:

Build: 32.2.A.5.11
Android 6.0.1
Looking for any help I can get
Are you actually sure it is locked and its not just an unactivated or not working Optus sim? Your Sim Lock image is exactly the same as mine and mine is unlocked...

Yeah, Ive tried a few Optus SIMs in it and same deal, they work in other phones

I want to change my First Phones IMEI with my Second Phones one.

I try to explain my problem as short and as informatical as possible.
I have a Sony Z3 which i bought in Germany 2 years ago, now i live in Turkey and my phoes IMEI got blocked from cellular access because if you want to use a Phone bought in a foreign country you have to pay something like a activation fee.
I also have a Sony xperia U which is much older but which i did buy in turkey.
Normaly foreign phones get blocked within 2 Months, i did use mine for 7 months now becasue i did put the Xperia U´s IMEI inside inside my Z3 with the "IMEI changer Pro" app. But somehow doesnt work anymore if i change the Imei to my xperia U´s imei, i do get network and even 3g, but cant do calls or recive calls, i get the "no network" error.
I did some digging and tought i have to change my IMEI in a more permanent way and found the program "MDKdroidTools" where you can change your imei, everything went well i even got the green box but the option to click on "IMEI/NVRAM" is always greyd out.
In very short i want to use my Z3 with my xperia U´s IMEI, and need assistance doing so.
Would be really great if someone has some tips for me. Thanks in advance.

eSIM/dual SIM on AT&T variant

Got my AT&T variant today. Doesn't look like eSIM funcationality is enabled. Second IMEI and eSIM shown but greyed out and no way to activate. Is this true? If so, does anyone know if unlocked version allows for eSIM use so you can get dual sim? I need dual SIM for both US (AT&T) and international travel (Singapore).
no dual sim on unlocked version either

Really? Why put the eSIM in if you're just going to disable it?
well that's a bummer. Hopefully someone will come up with some firmware or we'll see a country release the 4G version of the phone that will work in the US and support dual SIM. I do, however, use wifi calling a lot and right now the iPhone seems to be the only choice that can be AT&T wifi calling compatible and dual sim.
Thanks for letting me know - i also had an order for the unlocked variant that I will cancel.

Pixel 4/4XL unlocked versions (as well as bought thru AT&T) will do Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice on AT&T (sometimes requires a little work on your part to bug AT&T).
Also, I cannot find anyway to do Wi-Fi calling on the Flip, let alone HD Voice, though it is perfectly clear with calls I have made so far.
I bought the ATT version of the flip so getting wifi calling. I didn’t think Pixel 4 was dual sim? Before various bans, I had decent luck getting HD voice on Huwawei phones but never WiFi calling unless ATT firmware (or iPhone)

Typical AT&T treatment of BYOD with regards to Wi-Fi.
Pixel 4's are physical SIM and eSIM.
Basically you can (if you find a tech who can/will) provision the account with an IMEI that supports those features, and your SIM is current, it will/should work. My 4XL is currently set up like this (and previous Pixels as well).
Thx didn’t know about the pixel 4 - I did the same thing with IMEI numbers. I bought a cheap galaxy phone from ATT for the sole purpose of having an IMEI that shows ATT. It won’t help WiFi calling which needs firmware support but has consistently gotten HD voice to work. Hopefully a different variant of the flip will show up with dual sim support that can be used on the ATT network

Slightly off topic, but if you have a minute, could you post where the setting(s) for Wi-Fi calling actually are (if there is any), I'm curious to see if they are on mine (I can't find any as of yet).
Thanks.
It gave me the option to setup when I ran. Y hone setup. It’s all under connections in setting or you can search setting for WiFi calling. I believe this is only available with the ATT firmware

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious, and yes, seems its only on AT&T branded device(s).
On the unlocked version, I was able to access the hidden SIM manager menu using Activity Launcher and enable the second SIM. However, even after doing so, it doesn't seem that I can do much with it.
I saw same you can see it but it's not really enabling it (under about phone, esim is still greyed out). I bought a European Version of the phone that is supposed to have dual sim enabled and is arriving tomorrow - I will report back if I can add my AT&T plan to the eSIM and use my SG SIM card on the second line and how it works. Even if I get that to work, i will have to give up wifi calling (since not an AT&T variant of the phone) and usually - Samsung pay doesn't work (but usually google pay does). i will report back. Love the phone but without the ability to use 2 SIMs, it will sadly be doing back.

I thought that the Wi-Fi calling piece was becoming more universally supported, regardless of variant. I have the unlocked version and Verizon Wi-Fi calling (and HD calling) are both working.
Hi, I got one in Czech Republic and the dual sim (eSim/normal Sim) dual standby. the setting for eSIM are under Connections>>Sim card Manager, there should be a section with eSIMS and you select 'add mobile plan' (in CZ you scan the barcode of the eSIM thats provided by the operator). Wifi calling is in the phone app under call settings and can be activated for both sim 1 and sim 2 at the same time
I got the UK version of the phone. I have an AT&T phone number on an eSIM and have the eSIM card (with the QR code). I removed the plan from my old device (a Galaxy Fold Dual SIM I bought in Singapore that worked fine with both SIMS) and then tried to "add the plan" onto my new flip. I scanned the QR code and get the message "Your mobile plan is already being used on another device. For more information, contact your service provider.: I called AT&T and advanced tech support added the new IMEI's(both physical and eSIM) to that number on their end but still getting the error. They were at a loss for a solution. Any ideas on how to fix this? Really love the phone though useless to me without the ability to use an eSIM for my AT&T number.
BTW, yes to calls over LTE (VoLTE) with AT&T SIM on UK variant of the phone and, not surprisingly, no joy on Wifi Calling
You need a new QR code from ATT. If you are using an older QR code it wont work.
Are both SIMs 3G capable?

I gonna buy the UK model and so I can use both my personal and company numbers on one phone.
My company's number is nano sim and the supports 3G and 4G
My personal number is esim and supports 3G and 4G
Neither my personal nor company number network support 2G.
I read somewhere that while Z Flip is dual sim, one of the sims only support 2G. is that right? Can anyone confirm it?
went to AT&T store, moved my old esim (galaxy fold) to a physical sim, activated and tested on physical SIM then converted it again to eSIM (new QR code). Worked! Had trouble going from eSIM to eSIM but converting to physical SIM in the middle of the process (something I read on another forum) fixed it.
