i have a question currently i am on tmo post paid acct with no hotspot plan. with unlocked xperia zl (non tmo phone) i am able to use hotspot on stock android. i dont get any message that i need to upgrade plan in order to use hotspot feature. however when same SIM card is inserted into n5 when i use hotspot i get a message to upgrade plan to hotspot in order to use the feature.
my question is my xperia zl is able to bypass carrier restriction whereas n5 is not able to? both are unlocked and unrooted phone.
i know i can root or install 3rd party apps on n5 to achieve hotspot feature. i just want to understand how xperia is managing to by pass on stock rom.

What plan are you on? I keep hearing everyone having this issue, but I can tether freely with my n5. I'm stock unrooted with an unlocked bootloader. I have the new simple choice plan that includes tethering.
But to answer your question, Google has put a restriction in the stock rom, whereas Sony hasn't.

i am on biz classic unlimited plan which does not include hotspot need to pay separately. i have a feeling that google might have given imei info to the telco even though it is unlocked. whereas in case of xperia zl they may not have give imei no hence they are unable to block.
is it possible to identify correct model of your n5 is it american model (d820) or international model (d821)

If you're asking me what model I have its the d280. You can check by going into the bootloader. It will say the model number there.
i am also on d820 so basically both of our models are same. may i know what plan you are on?
on 2nd note could you also tell me what is your apn name? my apn name is on fast.t-mobile.com i tried epc.tmobile.com then i dont any data network. however my xperia apn name is epc.tmobile.com

Just call T-Mobile and update your plan to one that includes hotspot. The current version of your plan costs the same but enables hotspot. I was in the same situation.

Same issue here,
I finally have time to test this yesterday and tried to browse from a tablet. I was presented with a T-Mobile page to register my phone number. This is not the case on Galaxy S4 running Google Edition rom.
I can't wait until the developers find a way to bypass the restrictions

OK, so I am not an expert here but I know enough to give information that should help answer my question.
I have a Verizon (CDMA) Samsung Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535). I'd like to use this phone with a NET10 BYOD SIM card, but I'm not sure it will work. By all indications, my phone is a world phone that includes a GSM band. I say that because I can scan and attempt to connect to both AT&T and a local cell company that are both GSM services. In other words, I can select GSM/UMTS as a network option and it appears to work.
Trouble is, I don't have access to a GSM SIM, so there isn't any way for me to test this without spending money on the SIM card. SO in a round about way, I want to know if this will work. Can I buy a NET10 BYOD SIM, select GSM/UMTS under "Mobile Networks" in teh settings, and expect phone, text, and data to work?
I'm especially hoping to hear from people with the SCH-I535 Verizon GS3 if you've ever done this.
If this is not possible, is there any other BYOD SIM program that will allow for phone, text, and data in a CDMA Verizon phone? If so, what is it?
Thanks everyone.
If Verizon has not unlocked the phone off their carrier, then it will not work. (If you have the Jelly Bean Update, then its unlocked) If it is unlocked, then your in luck.
Mind you that I dont have this phone. But your phone is capable of ATT networks. Just avoid T-Mobile networks unless you want to be on EDGE.

Just curious if there is a way to get the t-mobile feature of wifi calling on phones which are not running the stock t-mobile rom? I have a phone in canada that uses a US sim for when we send drivers to the states for deliveries (transportation company) but the phone is from canada.
Can this be achieved? Is there maybe a successful app that can do this?

Nope. Many have tried, all have failed. It was possible until T-mobile changed the APK when ICS was released.
How did the APK affect everything? Did they add some special code that makes it not function properly?
So would changing the rom from lets AT&T to T-mobile or from Rogers to T-mobile, would the feature be successfully unlocked?

I don't know the specifics, but it is built into the framework of the ROM. Yes, changing the ROM on another network's device to a T-mobile ROM will allow you to use the Wi-Fi calling feature.
Figured as much.
Thanks for the responses.
The first requisite is that you're using a T-Mobile SIM, because the SIM has an internal authentication method that interfaces with the internal Wifi Calling app. You can't use any other carrier's ROM/Wifi Calling (e.g. Rogers' Wifi Calling) with a T-Mobile SIM, even if both carriers use Wifi Calling.
The second requisite is that the carrier actually supports Wifi Calling. It requires specific Kineto servers on their end.
Thirdly, you can flash a T-Mobile ROM on, say an AT&T phone (I've done this with an AT&T S4) if the phone can handle it, and that will "enable" (because it'll technically become a T-Mobile phone) Wifi Calling.
Fourthly, Wifi Calling is more than just an APK. Previously, it used UMA; that meant that the phone sent normal GSM signal over Wifi instead of through it's cellular radio. Now it uses a proprietary SIP (completely internet-based) protocol that nobody has been able to port to other ROMs. It's extremely embedded into the software framework of the phone.
So pretty much if you want to be able to use T-Mobile Wifi Calling, you need a T-Mobile phone or a T-Mobile ROM. The good news is that T-Mobile phones are fully compatible with all carriers in the US & Canada. They have all the required frequencies for every carrier. I have family up in Canada, so I'm familiar with all the Canadian carriers and what bands they operate on. Or like I said, you can flash your phones (depending on the phone, if T-Mobile also has it) with a T-Mobile ROM.
By the way, calling to Canada would still cost you with a normal T-Mobile plan. It's considered long-distance from a US perspective. There are apps you can use to make phone calls to land lines over Wifi, like Skype (if you pay). You could also use free apps that allow you to make calls to other people using the app (like Viber, which also does free messaging similar to Whatsapp and has a desktop app).
You would also need the right SIM card. Not all T-Mobile SIM cards support Wi-Fi calling.

Considering he said his sim was from the US, I think it is safe to assume that it is not a Canadian sim, and most likely T-mobile.
Uggg, this XDA app is terrible, I can't even edit posts. Anyways, how do I know what SIM card this person has? They didn't say, but even if we assume it's T-Mobile that's no guarantee it will work.

Glad to know that there are a few people here that know about the canadian phones. I just found the t-mobile rom so I am going to try and flash it via odin on my canadian phone.
And for the record so it doesn't confuse other XDA members, its a T-mobile sim and one of their more recent micro sims.
Don't ODIN another model's ROM. Stock ROM files include a modem. If you flash another model's modem, you will lose your IMEI. You need to root the phone and install a custom recovery so you can flash the ROM without the modem.
Pretty much all of their SIMs from the last two years will work. So that's not an issue. Like I said though, Wifi Calling simulates being you in the US. For example, I visit my grandparents in Ottawa. I use their Wifi to make Wifi Calls on my Galaxy Note 3. The calls are made as if I'm in the US. Meaning if I used Wifi Calling to call one of my friends who lives in the US, it counts as a domestic call. But if I call my grandparents' house phone, it'll be long distance, the same as if I were in the US making the call to Canada.
If you're trying to save money on calls, this won't work since you'll still be calling Canada long distance.

Which phone is it?
It's probably easier to go with a custom T-Mobile ROM from here on XDA since you won't be taking official updates anyway.
N900w8 - telus carrier.
EDIT: judging by the second statement, the custom roms aren't exactly AOSP based if one would still want to acquire such a feature.

The Canadian Note 3 is actually equivalent to the T-Mobile Note 3 (same frequencies). You can flash a T-Mobile Note 3 custom ROM from here (just don't flash any modems). Get one that is Touchwiz based. NB4-based ROMs (Android 4.4.2) are the latest. Vision NX3 is one that I use and is a minimally-tweaked stock based ROM (it includes some T-Mobile bloat, but that can be removed with root apps like Titanium Backup).
Would it be possible to flash a stock T-Mobile rom to at&t lg g4 I can skip the modem flash, I know that's a bad idea.
Is anyone using the T-Mobile Note 5 on AT&T? I am having data problems where I do not get data, but can send and receive texts, and also make calls. I switch to the Cingular APN and it works, but then goes out.
I have tried the Nxtgen phone apn and also phone apn, and no luck.
I know im not answering your question, but are you able to use the VOLTE feature on your tmobile phone on the at&t network? or even HD calling?
Actually At&t messed up my provisioning. You asked about those features, I would recommend you download Darthstalkers Rom Version 4, choose n9200A, it will install the at&t carrier files.
Just make sure to add the ATT Phone APN, do not use the nextgen phone apn.
Why do you suggest not using NextGen APN. I use it on all my phones and it's perfect your funny
I have been thinking of paying off my unrooted phone and switching to cricket. When I put my IME number to check compatibility it said it wasn't. So, I'm a bit confused. Is this phone compatible with ATT LTE or not. I thought that ATT and Cricket were the same?

I'm asking because if that's it, flashing the unlocked f/w after doing the data wipe etc. b-4 the flash won't get you there as your sim card will(VZW) will still call the shots. However, if your query is about rooting, or rather unlocking the bootloader on your handset, not certain thats even possible and just a friendly reminder about a voided samsung warranty and a shiny, expensive paper weight(brick) you'll have as a memory to gaze at should anything go sideways for you?! Just trying to clarify a few things and no harm or punking intended.

Thanks for the info. So call& text won't matter due to my sim, even if I buy an unlocked phone?
Not bragging but I'm not worried about bricking the phone, I can get another.
So to answer my other question, can rooting my phone give me unlimited mobile Hotspot with a rooted app? Its been 7 years since I played with firmware, bootloader, rooting, etc....just wanted to know if its still a thing.
That's a good question, I would search whether it can be done for Verizon first before paying for a bootloader unlock or csc change.
I have tmobile and a fully unlocked phone but they still know when I'm tethering or using mobile data. I know there's apps that used to mask that, I don't really care since tmobile doest care but it still shows up on my usage. Verizon always seems to have everything locked down to the point they block things that are fishy.
Start searching if there's a way to fool them first.
You can create a new apn. copy all the settings over to the new one but add ",dun" to apn type. That enables free unlimited untraceable hotspot. I believe you need an unlocked device to create a new apn though.

Correct, as he originally requested , but such a slippery slope, as no real consequences to root , cuz warranty is good thru 2021( best case scenario). Just possible/applicable trade-in values w/Samsung go South so to speak, imo? Swappa looks the other way, I've heard from other sellers, about ROM tinkering.

Hi. I bought a new Pixel 7 Pro from Google store and tried using the hotspot on it with my AT&T carrier. I noticed that I do not get an IP address from the phone. I verified with the carrier that I have it on my plan and they told me it is because my phone is unlocked which seems like BS to me. I have not rooted it or changed from the factory ROM and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on getting this to work? I put my SIM into my old Pixel XL that has a custom ROM on and is unlocked and hotspot works fine on it.
Thanks
Anyone got any ideas?
Mine works just fine.... On at&t as well... Dunno what's going on with yours
Mine works as well w/AT&T - I would reach out to AT&T and they can double-check the settings for your device, shouldn't take long.
I called them today and actually got someone with a brain. Went through many settings and then said my hotspot limit was reached to 3GB even though I had not used it in a couple months and just started a new billing cycle. I added 12GB of hotspot to the plan and then it worked! I am so glad someone took the time to look over the account to realize this as when I logged into AT&T's website it showed I had not used any of the data of the hotspot. Who knows why the computer on one end was different then what I saw but this fixed it. I am very happy. Thanks All!

Lol You can't hotspot because your device is unlocked xD, she should be fired for making customers believe that bs
You say "AT&T carrier" - are you by chance referring to an MVNO? Cricket, for example? Cricket doesn't allow BYOD devices to use hotspot. Older devices can evade their detection but newer ones cannot.
@J0nhy, I bought a brand new Google Pixel 7 Pro unlocked from the Google store. It is for sure unlocked.
And yes, AT&T is my carrier (that is who the bill comes from and my SIM has their logo stamped on it), not Cricket.
Yeah if you have AT&T, just call tech support and hang up and call again until you get someone who can investigate why it doesn't work rather than blaming the unlocked device.
I tethered via USB just fine. I have an unlocked phone and I'm on AT&T as well.
Just customer service some don't know what they are doing and others are better at their job. I'm glad all it was, was a setting from the carrier and not my new phone. I love this new Pixel 7 Pro. The best phone I have ever owned.
Root the phone, install VPN Hotspot from play store... I go through 70gb+ a month. Not a single bit of hotspot data.

I second this. I use VPN hotspot as well with a VPN. I've tried it on Verizon and T-Mobile but not AT&t. Having both VPN hotspot and a VPN on, the ISP as no idea that you're using hotspot and you can have unlimited hotspot.
