My son attempted to root his S6 with Odin and failed. His phone is SM-G920R7 (nTelos) and there are no compatible roms - but that didn't stop him from trying. So we are got the "An error has occurred updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software." So, downloaded that, went to the software update and initialization section to try to reinstall the factory software. It takes the Model number (above), but then asks for the serial number. I've tried both IMEI# on the back and any other numbers I can come up with. No luck.
I called the carrier and Samsung and each of them told me to call the other. Does anyone know what "serial number" (technically s/n: is the prompt) they want? Thanks.
It seems at this point that the software is only trying to validate that the serial number exists - the phone is not connected to the computer. But entering any of the numbers mentioned above only lead to an error stating the serial number is not valid.
Any help would be great. Thanks
Same issue here.

First forum post, having the same issue. Very weird... I bought my phone at a Bell corporate store, so no illegal issues there or anything. Very confused!

Yes serial number is s/n. It's written on back of your phone check it.
The s/n is written on the back of the phone
Anyone figure this out? Cannot get Smart Switch to accept my s/n. Thanks.
Same problem here. Nothing says serial number on my box, in my phone, or on the back. Only says IMEI which does not work in Smart Switch.

Having the same issue with my S7 (SM-G930FD). I've definitely got the correct serial number as I've registered the device on Samsung's website and I got the serial number from there.
I've managed to flash it again by getting back to the screen where it tells me to intialise the device using Smartswitch then I've just used Odin to reinstall the firmware again. Have had to wipe everything but at least I've got my device back. (The initialisation screen appears to be a different screen for the download mode)

if you solve it,please tell me how and i will be thankful
guys, i was trying to get my bootloader code with dc unlocker but i get an error
basically my phone was without serial number so i sended my sn to my phone
now i have the correct sn (imei was ok)
but i still getting that error
i saw that 1 guy had it and somebody sad to him to repair as empty board with hcu but i have no credits for that
i gues the problem is: my phone is with frdl04c567b397 firmware
but when i connect in manufacterer mode the hcu shows me testkeys firmware
i don't know why
i really want to install lingeage os (it is a honor 8) but i don't know what to do
i already sended updates changing dns on my router, and the firmware still testkeys
when i connect in bootloader mode shows me the right firmware
i really don't know what is wrong
firmware boots up and everything works fine so i really really don't know what is wrong besides i had no sn but i already fixed that
(hcu client also shows me no wifi and bluetooth mac, what is weird cause both wifi and bluetooth are working)

I've seen it all over the Internet, with the warning "DO NOT try to unlock SMT Download mode, or else your IMEI and Widevine certification will get wiped". (I assume the Widevine certification is for DRM in apps like Netflix)
I don't have a OnePlus 7 Pro yet, but it'll arrive in about a week and I'm trying to find out everything I can about the device. Plus if anyone knows anything about this, I'm sure other people are curious about it too and would like to have a search result to click on to find out more.
Is SMT Download mode some sort of super-powerful data-flashing mode used by the factory to configure devices after manufacturing? Is it possible to recover the data wiped when enabling it? What are its capabilities?

It allows you to re-flash all partitions with a qualcomm flash tool. You can start it by turning off your phone, hold the louder button and plug the phone into your pc.

no, on the phone its both the same. you just change the mode in msm download tool from "upgrade mode" to "smt mode".
This allows you to reflash all partitions, even IMEI

Ohh - so SMT mode is the super-powerful factory flashing mode? Good to know. Is it just a straight "overwrite /dev/sda with this blob" thing?

You can look after a tutorial on yt or it should be possible to flash the IMEI in smt in msm by itself. I just have the same problem and will try it out.

I was able to recover my IMEI & MEID with the help of @justencase6 ,i tried to flash my OnePlus 7 through MSM tool via SMT mode and erased NV ViP DYNAMIC PARTITION,imei is showing 0 & alert slider is not working after flashing via SMT MODE, but thanks to @justencase6 because he told me how to fix it all and i did the same and everything is working including alert slider.
CAUTION: DON'T TRY TO FLASH YOUR PHONE IN [SMT] MODE.
IF YOU FLASH YOUR PHONE IN SMT MODE THEN___
*Your IMEI & MEID will be erased
*PERSIST partition will be also erased,so your ALERT SLIDER will not work
*And Your Whole UFS will be wiped,i don't know it but it's called "UFS PROVISIONING"
*AFTER FLASHING IN SMT MODE
YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY POWER ON YOUR DEVICE THEN YOU WILL SEE THAT YOUR IMEI IS ERASED AND ALERT SLIDER IS NOT WORKING AND AMBIENT DISPLAY WILL NOT WORK ALSO
AFTER THAT I TRIED TO FLASH IMEI THROUGH [QLM IMEI WRITE TOOL]
-First of all you have to enable DIAG MODE by dialing *#801# and Enable RNDIS & DIAG PORT
-NOW install Qualcomm 9008 driver in your PC
-Then plug your phone in PC
-Open device manager and see COM PORT & LPT if it shows Qualcomm 90B6 is showing or not
-if it showing then Open the QLM IMEI WRITE TOOL & type your IMEI which is written on BOX in which phone comes
-then click WRITE,if it says PASS then reboot your Device
-Open your phone dialer and dial *#06# and you will see that your imei is restored
THIS METHOD IS NOT QUITE GOOD BECAUSE IT WILL ONLY ENABLE YOUR CALLING OPTIONS ON YOUR DEVICE AND
VOLTE WILL WORK ON ONLY ONE SIM SLOT.
YOU CAN'T RESTORE YOUR MEID BY THIS METHOD

Make sure to download Qualcomm Driver, OnePlus USB Driver and select the right model of the msm tool and your device. Also make sure, to select "others" and not "targat" on the top left.
Cheers

Do not flash your device in SMT MODE UNTIL YOU HAVE ALREADY READ BACK ALL OF YOUR DEVICE PARTITIONS,IF YOU DO SO THEN YOUR IMEI WILL BE ERASED AND YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO RECOVER IT.

I did that, i purchased it from olx and its ime was changed. With the help of meid i restored original imei and did offical bootloader unlock. I was converting it to global but after installation of fastboot rom and update ota its baseband gone imei null. I restore stock and this time it has basbeand and ime but no network. Even i repaired ime but It won't. At this time i created backup of efs and persist and smt updated. Now everything is ok including finger print (restore efs and persist by twrp) but still no network. In manual it search network but won't registered. I think there was tmobile sim lock data which is wiped as my mobile was unlocked. So i recommend everyone to not use smt updated especially op8 and above.

Hi, I cannot unlock bootloader anymore because of rom flash.
Serial number says its 0123456789ABCDEF but its really NULL literally nothing. the OEM Key is MD5 hash of serial number but there is no serial number so i can't unlock it.
How can I flash a random serial number onto my phone to make it work?
