Custom ROM with Incremental OTA update - General Questions and Answers

Hello, most of custom ROM OTA is not a incremental updates unlike OEM does. Always official custom ROM eg Lineage, RR all give full ROM package.
My question to you, any ROM that supports incremental updates through OTA like OEM does?

Just google "CyanDelta".
I'm not sure whether it is still active after death of CyanogenMod.
I think it only work with official Cyanogen(LOS) builds.

It should list the features available in the ROM in the ROM thread. If it has OTA it'll be listed, or just post in the ROM thread and ask if it gives OTAs.
You can just download and flash the incremental updates manually, what's the difference. Don't be lazy.

First of all, I'm far from a noob, lol.
Second, learn to read and comprehend. I didn't say anything about all ROMs having incremental updates. I said for them to read the ROM thread and that the features of the ROM should be listed and "IF" the ROM offers OTA updates, it would be listed in the features. And if OTAs are not offered then they could just manually download any ROM updates that "are" offered and flash them manually.
Did you understand me that time, noob? Learn to see who you're talking to, lol.

The XDA rules state that members are to search first because in most cases the question you have has been asked before or at least is already easily available by using the XDA search feature. Also, the reason for the ROM threads are not just for members to get ROMs, it's also for them to read everything they might need to know about the ROM, it's features and the things required to flash and use it. This information should be in the first post of the ROM thread. The rest of the thread will contain questions about the ROM and troubleshooting issues. XDA is about sharing information but it's also about making that information available for you to find for yourself. Just take time and read because what you want to know is out there if you just look.
The reason I'm saying for you to read through the ROM threads is because you'll make a more accurate choice of which ROM you want because anything anyone might suggest may not be satisfactory for you and that would just cause you to make another thread or post to ask for another opinion. It will come out to the best for you if you just read and try a few until you find one you like. It's what you'll end up doing anyway no matter what anyone suggests, so just make a long story short without all the unnecessary posts from either of us.

OTA doesn't mean incremental, so if a ROM offers OTA it doesn't automatically offer incremental OTA. Wrong information!

I've already told one person this in this thread, now I have to tell you as well. Learn to read.
Pay close attention to the details now.
I never said anything about a ROM that supports OTA means that it also automatically supports incremental updates. You are making a connection between those two things that I never said anything about.
If you read the first post of this thread, the OP specifically asked if there are any ROMs that support incremental updates via OTA. My reply was, if a ROM here supports incremental updates via OTA, it would be listed in the changelog or it would be in a list of features that the ROM supports.
So, that means, the only thing wrong here is your interpretation of what I posted. Nice try though.

Sorry, but your post is just unclear and ambigous. You only wrote about OTA and didn't even mention incrementals, so your post seemed to either imply that you thought that that was the same or didn't get the question. And btw, incrementals and OTA don't really have a relation, there can be non-OTA incrementals and non-incremental OTAs. So your post wasn't clearly answering the question, so not poor reading on my side but poor writing on your side.

The point is, if you want to know if a ROM has a certain feature, you read the ROM thread to find its list of features or you read the changelog or you ask in the thread where the ROM is posted.

Why can't custom roms have OTA updates?

That is not what I meant. I meant why can't rom developers send there own OTA's so the rom can pick up on them and download it Over The Air.

I suppose they could if they really wanted to, but it isnt that hard to plug into a computer and just flash an update from your ROM maker.
I think roms in the past have tried it before, just didnt end up working out I think
Doesn't ROM Mgr sort of do this already? Track new ROMs and updates for you and let you download and flash them?
yeah basically ROM manager is quite literally getting an OTA update from your specific ROM developer. i see what you mean that you dont get a pop up from them. but for all purposes, you check rom manager for a new version, download it, and it flashes it for you automatically, all OTA.
Oh, this is too funny. I normally wouldn't bother, but I just watched this Cyanogen Mod V7 Preview demo video on youtube, and at the 3:42 mark he shows the screen that allows you to enable OTA notification of ROM updates.
So, the answer to the OP is that they can, it's just most don't choose to for one reason or another...
Correct. The latest CyanogenMOD 7 Alpha 2-2 released January 6, 2011 for the Nexus S now has an OTA option.
Well I need to look through the rom more and the reason I do not like rom manager is because I do not want to pay $5 just for that but thanks everyone here.

If you're using CM7 Alpha (latest), go to Settings then CyanogenMOD Settings, and it's there on top "Update Notifications"

I paid the $5 as a thank you to Koush for all his development support of the devices I own, not for the features of it - I hardly use it at all.
I do however use his CWM recovery, his root instructions and files, and he's the main dev for Cyanogen Mod on the NS. Several of my phones are much better experiences because of his work. He doesn't ask for direct donations, he just says "if you like my work, please buy one of my apps."
YMMV.
This is the first time I have actually used a koush rom but I do see where you are coming from. I just thought that titanium backup and root explorer were better deals.

Question about the official upgrade
Forgive the noob question, but does anyone know if the official release will unroot your phone using the techniques and software provided by USC? I'm technically savvy but this is still somewhat new to me. I've used Odin to root my phone and upgrade to the unofficial leak. I've had a number of software crashes since. I also found out, since I didn't do proper research before jumping onto the bandwagon, after the fact, that rooting will void the warranty. I'd like to unroot it, but I just need to know if this will do it or if I need to unroot it before I upgrade. Thanks!
And within seconds, I answer my own question
Apparently, it's been reported that the official update will, indeed, unroot your phone as well. Sorry for the wasted space.

If you install the official upgrade with the Odin files it will also "unroot" your phone. I say that because it's just putting a fresh system image on your phone so of course it will be "unrooted". The better option would be to install the pre-rooted version that has the 2e recovery as well so you can install custom ROMs and such.

This is a developers forum. YOU assume the risks when flashing these roms. If YOU choose to flash customs roms from a development forum without making proper backups then YOU are a moron. As this issue seems only particular to YOUR device I would assume its something YOU have done not the fault of the rom dev.

Version updates aren't possible with Revolver Parts. As Gnufabio pointed out, 3.5 involves new base Asus firmware. Download the whole 240 mb rom from the first post in the Revolver thread, boot into CWM, wipe your cache and Dalvik, flash the full rom from the choose zip update dialog. Then you can use Revolver Parts to handle updates until the next version change update.
There is a certain amount of risk associated with the reward of tweaking your device, if you dont have the time to teach yourself (by reading the heck out of XDA threads), you're likely better off staying stock.

For the record I was not really referring to how long it takes to answer my question, as I work in the Technology field, I'm at work and also have a life. I was referring to the underutilization of Q&As in general. As its quicker to get an answer, feedback or open discussion on the development forum but posts are ADMIN Noted and pushed here. I noticed it's much more strictly enforced on some phone forums but say for a S5 it's tons of Q&A discussions right in the development forum itself for a particular Rom. Which is cool because it's more traffic. I don't personally care which one I use but.... Seems like Q&A Forums are trolled by some people who may or may not be more knowledgeable about a certain subject than another and can't wait to chime in with an answer like "You literally posted your previous question twelve hours before. lab rats rom miracast!!
I am thinking of trying this rom, but I have a question. Would using this rom break miracast capability. The phone usually checks itself to see if the rom is official, does using this rom bypasses this. I use the feature everyday, and would hate to lose it. back in the note 2 days we would have to use triangle away to fool the system into thinking it was official.

I don't use miracast, but screen mirroring still works between my Note Edge and my Samsung TV. If I could test miracast I would. I thought the miracast issue was broken because of a custom kernel?

What won't work?
Sorry we were speaking about miracast.
There is a delay after pressing home button and screen turning on. Anyway to fix this?

If I root my Pixel 2, can I still get standard OTA updates?

I don't want to have to muck about too much with downloading custom updates etc., so being able to still get Google's OTA updates would be ideal.
All I really want is to be able to run proper backups, and install system-level adblock. Possible?
yes you can. however you have to side load them. you will not be able to automatically update...
and please search before posting. this has been covered many times.
