TWRP - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Next time I go to flash a new custom rom I'm thinking of wiping internal storage just to really clean things out. Since I use my external SD card for TWRP to store backups etc... There's still the required TWRP directory on the internal storage which remains empty. If I wipe internal storage how will that effect that directory?

I don't know how that will affect the directory but I can tell you for sure it won't affect ROM installation. Every time I flash a new ROM, I always wipe internal storage and I haven't faced any problems.

It won't really effect it, unless you use themes or changed the stock configuration... those are the only things stored in the twrp directory of internal storage. You will notice the next time you start TWRP it will likely give you the warning screen about an unmodified system partition and ask you to allow changes.

[Q] Dalvik/Chache/User data wipe?

So I'm about to install Tiamat's new ROM (I really want the init.d scripting functionality, plus it can't hurt to get up-to-date) but I can't remember if wiping my user data wipes out the /sdcard/ mount on my xoom. I've got 15gbs in there in all kinds of random stuff and I'd rather not wipe it if I don't have to.
What I THINK is that the Dalvik/Cache/User data wipe that I do before I install the ROM will do what it would on my phone - simply wipe everything that isn't on the /sdcard/ partition. Is this correct? I sure hope so.
Yes, that is correct. It won't touch your SD card.
Just to be certain...
Ok, but to be clear, I don't actually HAVE an sdcard, just the bigass bit of internal memory mounted AS /sdcard/. It won't mess with that right?

If you are asking about the user data wipe you will have to do I order to flash thetiamat rom,
ummm yes, it will wipe that (internal storage) but not wipe your external/removable sdcard.
Damn. Ok, well, I'll just back all of that up to the computer then. It'll take a while.
You need an sdcard to install the rom though.

Nope
Ok, so, like I thought, the "wipe data/factory reset" option in ClockWorkMod Recovery does NOT format the /sdcard/ partition, even though it is actually physically located on the internal storage.
Because of this I was also able to use the internal storage to store the tiamat*.zip rom file and flash from the internal storage mapped to /sdcard/. I'm now going to attempt to restore all of my settings and apps via Titanium Backup.
Thanks anyway guys. You did inspire me to do a full backup of my /sdcard/ partition onto my computer at least.
Sorry guys. I was way off. I was even smug about it. Well, as it turns out, you do need an SD card. Check out my post here to see what happened (a lot of dumb bad stuff): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152121

[Q] Complete Phone Redo???

I have been flashing and playing different roms for awhile now but I have noticed that my phone is running out of space so quickly these days. The internal sd card is full and my external sd card has a little space but that's it, and the phone won't do updates or new downloads due to the internal card being full.
I was wondering, I want to go back to using CM10 again on this Blaze with the latest gapps, but I want to wipe EVERYTHING and start fresh, I have backed things using wondershares mobilego (as well as a manual backup of both sd cards, internal and external).
Can someone give me a good medthod on wiping it all, system, cache, dalvik, internal sd card and external sd card and doing a fresh install of cm10 and gapps.
Thanks in advance
Download the latest cm10 nightly and 4.1.2 gapps from the official cm10 thread to your external SD card.
Boot to cwm and go to mounts, and format:
System
Data
Cache
Emmc
Do all of them several times.
Go to advanced and wipe davlik cache a couple times too.
Then install the cm10 zip followed by the gapps. Wipe cache and davlik one more time. You can format the external SD card any time later, after you verify boot (suggested). You can use a PC or the built in format under settings/storage.

Wouldn't I also need to do format /sdcard several times as well to format the internal sd and then after I am all done I can do the format /sd-ext to format the external sd card? Which if I format the sd-ext it won't hurt anything I did for the install of CM and gapps right?
By the way, thanks for your help I appreciate it
You can format the external a couple times. Sometimes things get left behind, that's why in suggested the multiple wipes. You don't have to worry about SD ext, the partition will get wiped when the external SD card is formated. If you didn't create the partition there's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't format the emmc (internal SD card) after installing a rom as some of it is used.

Thanks again, I did as stated above then booted up, made sure all worked fine then went back into cwm and formatted the sd card (not the sd-ext). I am now putting some music and photos back on the sd card so I have them with me. Latest CM10 Nightly from the 4th seems to freeze a little bit when trying to do things on my Blaze, maybe I just need to reboot it again after I move the stuff over.
Thanks again!
Give it a a little while to settle. If it is still giving you issues try the previous nightly from 7/28.

Part of the internal storage is cached at /cache. It caches a bunch of things, such as mount points and app usage. When you wipe cache and start over, expect things to be slower for a couple days/reboots. Then it'll settle, as was said above
Good tips Romman0. I try to do this every 4 months or so. Blackhole and FSC only make it better, but that's clearing leftovers and realigning empty blocks and messing with the filesystem and a lot of technical junk

[Q] Galaxy S4 (rooted) - Out of Internal Storage (...but I am not)

OK...I have a rooted Sprint Galaxy S4, and keep getting "Storage Space Running Out" message !
The thing though is, that I should have tons of internal storage left. I have flashed 3 different ROMs, and after a few days I get the message again. I can erase some apps to free up space, and half a day later same problem. I can't even get my apps on the phone, due to space issues and I also can't put them on the external SD (not with a specific APP to do it for me, nor can I move them manually, because the button is simply not there in the Storage or APPs SETTINGS menu).
Every time I flash a new ROM I clear data, dalvic....full factory reset....but end up with the same result!
Could someone please help out with a fix or solution with this very annoying problem.
P.S.: ....yes, I have searched tons on this forum and others, but nothing has worked for me yet!
....ANYONE ????
Hello
Looking at images you included it looks like apps & data takes only 1 GB space . There must be some junk in internal storage (may be old .asec files , thumbnails etc). Attach the screenshot of sd storage also . I should see where the data is stored in your current rom .

I flashed old Nandroid of SACS ROM 4.3....so it would be a stock rom screenshot now, and all you would see is that there is 18Gig memory left on the SD card!!!
I had to reflash Nandroid because I traveled and I wasn't getting a signal on my previous rom! I do now...but the problem remains, or actually is worse, but at least my phone works to make calls (no txt or email, because storage space is too low).
In either case, the SD storage has plenty of room, but I don't think that this was ever an issue!....I think it is the phone itself, but maybe there is a fix and I would prefer that over taking it in for many reasons!
Thanks for getting back to me though, let me know.....
Hi
Copy all required data from internal storage to sd card and format internal storage from custom recovery (CWM/mount/format emmc or TWRP/wipe/advanced/emmc) and reboot.
Hope it works !

I will try that tomorrow and will let you know....thx again!
i want you to try stock rom for few days and check
OK...!
I wiped everything again and did factory reset...
copied everything from internal storage to a computer...
formatted data and system (twice)
wiped again, formatted data and system again....
flashed a sprint stock rom
same problem.... I have 860MB of 16GB unused space available!!!!
when I check though, my system data (bare essentials of what is left) is only 348MB....there is 647MB used for apps....the rest is clean!!!
I am still not sure where all the storage went! Could my internal storage be corrupt or broke???
Thanks for the ideas, I will try anything!!!

Try flashing your stock rom again.
I told to format internal storage (emmc) and not data and system partitions. Try that

Clean-Flashing a new ROM

Hi, After using sultan's 6.0CMod ROM for quite a while I'm looking for something newer (perhaps RR's or something similar)
I want to completely delete my internal storage before installing and since int's been a long time since the last time I installed a new ROM from scratch I wanted to ask:
After deleting internal storage through TWRP's recovery, will my phone unroot/return to Cyanogen recovery?
If not: do I simply delete internal storage --> put the ROM file & GApps on the SD card --> go to recovery- wipe system, data etc --> install the ROM ?
or am I missing something
thanks

Why you want to clean internal storage?
Clean flashing doesn't needs cleaning of internal storage.

URGENT HELP needed - Oneplus 6 lost access to internal storage

I will try to make it short. While trying to install edxposed, I messed up. It went into startloop. Then I flashed the custom ROM, twrp, base rom, formatted internal storage etc. But now I lost the access to internal storage.
So, current scenario is
1. TWRP can access internal sdcard. It's not even showing any encrypted folders, only 2 folders showing - TWRP & Obb
2. Google play can install apps, but no apps can write anything to internal storage I.e. Camera cannot save Photos, cannot save screenshot, Chrome cannot download anything etc.
3. Settings app showing 0b/0b. Es explorer showing 100% filled. Storage showing 12gb used of 56gb.
4. PC can see my phone storage but cannot paste anything in it.
So it seems to me that somehow my internal storage has become RO or something. So if anyone can help me solve this problem, I will be highly grateful. TIA
UPDATE:
problem not solved yet, but what I found is, the main problem is the root directory for the internal storage has changed somehow. By default, it resides in root/storage/emulated/0, but now it has changed to root/storage/emulated, so the apps cannot access it. Now how can I turn it back to default?

It sounds like to me you have corrupted your internal SD card you will have to format SD card instead of normal wipe and then reflash rom via Computer

I have formatted it already. And what's the difference between flashing a ROM via computer & via USB?

Wipe vs format. Wipe is just removing files from partition without destroying the partition. Format is rebuilding the partition fresh. You did not format phone because that would fix this problem. Format data partition and this will be fixed.
I also had the same issue so i flashed stock through pc. Now its fine. Only issue is on Twrp data shows encrypted, i think i have to flash dm verity zip to decrypt it
