Polarization - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned more but with the 10 and polarized sunglasses it was impossible to view the screen in portrait mode. Anyone have word if that is the case with the U11? I've pre-ordered but haven't gotten a definitive answer and none of the official people reply on twitter.

I read a review a couple of days ago where it said the polarisation plate (or whatever it's called) had been moved to landscape so the screen was black if you wear polarised glasses and view it in landscape. Better than portrait I suppose, but still not ideal.

Maybe you should take a look in the flagship discussion thread. There it tells that the U11 has no problems with polarization, nor in landscape or in portrait. The guys there tested a unit with different polarized glasses.

Sorry man. I searched that thread with the term "polarization" and got one hit from 2017 talking about raybans and polarization in general. Maybe I was doing it wrong. Thanks for the info. Good to hear.

Oakley's gave me a black screen with my 10 when in landscape. If yours was portrait, man that sucks. Hopefully the U11 doesn't do same thing.

From the dev unit I own, polarized glasses gives me a blackscreen in landscape mode. All is ok with the portrait mode.
If what the reviewer said is true, so they made a move on final product

I have htc 10 and it is viewable from my polarised glasses after I pasted tempered glass on the screen. Hope this helps.

Great for me! I can use my Oakley Polaroid glasses and now see the screen very clearly in portrait mode. When landscape it's just as the HTC 10 is in portrait - cannot see the screen
HTC have obviously changed the screen set-up and this is good news for me (in my car).

I have seen polarisation on m7 and m8 but it wasn't a deliberate act by the glass manufacturer.
Are some now implying this is now standard?

Hi kisakuku,
I'm specifically referring to the touch screen glass.
One of my HTC M8 (we have 3 in the family) has polarised glass. It was replaced under warranty and the replacement glass did not exhibit the glass polarization.

Same here with my Ray Bans and cheaper polarized sunglasses.

So should the HTC glass be polarised now or not?
My M7 and M8 are not.

In portrait on the U11, polarized glasses are not affected, thankfully!!...in landscape mode it will be black.

I went past the HTC Authorised repairer today.
I compared my HTC U11 with a HTC U Ultra and HTC 10 all with Polarised glasses.
The U Ultra, could be viewed at any angle and not affected ( This is how it should be!)
The U11 could be view vertically, but in landscape it could not ( which means in Navigation mode- and when I'm driving with my Polarized sunglasses I cant see the scree)
The HTC 10 could not be viewed vertically but could be viewed in landscape mode.
I think this proves that sufficiently now.
The impact is to users who use polarised lenses.

Who has an non-polarized screen?

Can confirm precisely this; 10 does not work well with polarized lenses when held in portrait; U11 does not work well with polarized lenses in landscape. There were numerous complaints about polarization on the 10 (since it wasn't extant on the M8 or M9). I suppose HTC's response was to "switch" polarity on the U11 from the 10.

Yah, this kinda stinks about the U11. I can live with it as I don't use it in landscape that much while wearing my sunglasses.
One thing that solved it on my previous OPO which had the same issues was a matte screen protector: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JW0AUJA/
If one like this becomes available, I may try it, even though I love the feel of the original glass.
Sent from my HTC U11 using Tapatalk

same here, black screen w/ my Maui Jim in landscape mode... I can live with it though.

Anyone notice how easy it is to wipe fingerprints off the screen?

I've owned a ton of phones and this is the first phone where I can literally wipe across one area once or twice and all the fingerprints are completely gone. On my previous phones I would have to wipe over and over to get everything clean.
So easy that the screen protector I purchased from TMobile "wiped" off...
I'm paranoid about scratching the screen so I want a screen protector, but it came off so easily lol
If it makes you feel any better, I dropped my tv remote (pretty heavy) directly onto my screen today and there isn't one single scratch.
I honestly don't think screen protectors are necessary for newer phones.

Keep believing that. My G2X got scratched within a week of having it. I dropped it on it's back, and in the process got some grit on the screen. It scratched while wiping the grit off.

Obviously...that is your fault. Specs of sand or something will scratch the screen if you wipe it off with it on there. I'm very careful before wiping the screen...I blow off the screen first, then kind of brush the microfiber cloth very quickly over the screen to get more off, then finally I use pressure to wipe the screen.
With my previous phone, I didn't use a protector and it looked brand new the day I sold it.
Yeah this screen stays clean.. I took the screen protector off and noticed this. And whoever said its hard to see this screen in direct sunlight was completely lying.

Are you serious? Someone actually said the screen is hard to see in direct sunlight? I would have to say that the person who said that is downright lying and trying to bad talk the Sensation to justify there purchase of a different device. I can honestly say, the display on the Sensation performs in direct sunlight better than any phone I've EVER used. I can't get over just how easy it is to read in direct sunlight. I put it next to my G2X and it wasn't even a contest.

Lots of people have said that in various threads and forums. Seems most people only have great things to say about it. I should have mine tomorrow and can report back my findings.
Gorilla Glass is a wonderful thing!!!! My G2 screen still looks new after keys and coins in the pocket.

What is your display/brightness setting on? If mine is the highest then I have no issues seeing the screen in direct sunlight. However, if I have it set to auto, then it's not easy to see. The date on my box is 5/25/11.
Looking carefully at the screen, is does not seem to be a plain glass. There is what looks like a clear coat! Even the refloection on it when its off are not totally straight like on an ordinary phone, an HD2 for example. So I would suggest that there is some kind of (semi?) anti-print coating.
Note that the HD2 was also having a Gorilla Glass.
My 25/05/11 Sensation gets smudges on its screen very easily, and they are difficult to wipe off. It's also pretty hard to see in sunlight unless it's on maximum brightness.
Strange how I'm getting the opposite experience to other people here - jealous of you!

So...Yellow screen has left!

Today I noticed that my warm or yellow screen has gotten whiter..not bluer but just whiter! Freakin awesome. Plus I got my ballistics case and it fits perfect.

My One X is one of the few (two) I've seen that wasn't yellowish, but has a small amount of backlight bleed at the bottom right. I wasn't sure about exchanging it in fear of getting a one with a yellowish screen but you're the second person I've read saying this so maybe there is just some run in time. Considering almost every display I've seen has been warm, I'm guessing most in this forum have one like this. Is the the op's experience that of others as well?

Nice. Can't wait to get my case, just got my shipping notice
I've heard the yellowish screen (in general, not just One X) is from the adhesive they use to hold the screen and the glass together, and it just needs time before the yellow tint goes away.
Im noticing the same thing. Screen is looking better and better. Im keeping it full brightness for a while to speed things up since its a bit hotter

When you guys talk about the yellow screen, was the whole screen yellow or just some spots? On mine the bottom right corner its like this spot about the size of a 1 inch semi circle it seems to have a yellower tint then the rest of the screen. It's noticeable on white app screens.
I'm not sure if I should return the phone. Just got it today. Or wait it out and hope I have your guys' luck.
Thanks.

That's exactly where mine is yellowish also. I guess I'll hold out a while. I have 30 days. One quick question. When you say it looks better, does that spot still look a little different from the rest of the display or has it cleared up to where you don't notice it at all?

There was definitely something wrong with mine. I decided to go into AT&T today just to take a look at the One X's there and compare mine and out of the three on display there, and the two I saw yesterday at a different store where I bought mine, none had any yellow "spots". Now just so you know, my screen didn't have a "warm" display with a yellowish tint. Most of the display was bright white except for a small spot on the bottom right. It reminded me of the pictures of the iPhones that had the adhesive problem where there were noticeable "spots". I talked to the rep and was gonna wait to see if it would dry and go away since I only just bought the phone yesterday, but he said he would go to the back and get another white one and open it up to see if it was any better. The screen on that was perfect. A noticeable difference from the one with the "yellow spot". So, long story short, he swapped out my phone.
P.S. I understand what you are saying. The "warmer" looking screens are starting to get "cooler", but I honestly think my original one wasn't in that category per se. It was nice of the rep to let me swap it out. Depends on who you get I guess.

Haha... well I also suppose they would go for something a bit clearer knowing that there's a camera behind it. If not clear, a plastic that's a bit more scratch resistant. I really doubt it's glass let alone gorilla glass.
I think its the same type of plastic used on the lens cover of the Desire. For that reason i'm a but worried because the desire's scratched easily and became blurry from carrying the phone around in a pocket. Mine even had a crack in it.
Since the Desire had a removable back this was not a problem, you could replace the back or, as i did, push out the lens cover completely. But this is not possible One X. One X takes very good videos and photos and i dont want to ruin it with damaging the lens cover so i will definitely place a protector on it asap.
Wondered the same thing when buying it because it seems without a case the phone rests on the lens when played on its back. Got a case soon after just incase though, but i'd love to know for sure.

Detachable lenses for phones

Hi guys!
I was reading xda when saw a topic about lenses. I was looking for some cheap solution and found this on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/0-67X-Detachable-Wide-Angle-Macro-Lens-for-iPhone-4G-4S-iPod-Phone-Camera-DC125B-/230858237319?pt=US_Other_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item35c0392587
It's designed for iPhone but I'm sure it is compatible with our Nexus because our camera is even inner than the iPhone's one.
Maybe the LED flash cause some problems, but if I understand corretly it works with a 3M sticker-ring, which is magnetic, so you can attach the lenses to it.
Any thoughts?
Sorry for my English.

I have very similar ones in silver. They are compatible with the N4. There is a very slight 'dark' bit around the edge of the images due to it not quite being wide enough inside but it's hardly noticeable. If you'd like to see some sample images taken with the wide angle and macro, let me know.

Mine stuck without any issue (with and without a screen protector). If you're finding that it's not sticking, try using a hairdryer to heat the adhesive and allow to cool naturally.
I want one of those microscope lenses like Sherlock has on Elementary but the fisheye looks cool too.

Are the cutouts actual holes, or clear glass? I've had proximity sensor issues in the past, and am concerned about that an issues for the radar sensors.
Ordered one for the XL. Hopefully it is as good as your old school flat screen phone models.
So the tempered glass you're making are going to only be like the picture above? I'm not a fan of tempered glass where is just sticky around the edges. Are you making regular ones too?

The black trim is 3D molded to accommodate the Pixel's curved screen. The full adhesion gives superior performance and feel over models without.
Thanks!

We have some distribution in Europe, but no retailer in the UK yet. If you can tell us the retailer you'd prefer we can work on getting them setup.
This is stellar. Actual interaction with a product distributor, rather than just ordering something, hoping it works out and if it doesn't, moving on to the next protector without actually having any realtime knowledge of the product ? I got burned so many times with OP protectors, this is quite appealing. Think I'm gonna grab a couple friday, along with the spigen crystal clear case. That will be a killer setup. It will be...oh so badass ?

You bet! That's one of the reasons we love XDA, we can speak directly to our customers. Also, we have a satisfaction guarantee, so if you are not happy with any of our products you can just let us know and we'll take care of you. :good:
