[Root] Issues with Facebook app and Play Store on Android 7.1.1 - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Hi,
I have an Xperia XZ dual sim (F8332) with :
An unlocked bootlader
Android 7.1.1 (build number 41.2.A.2.199)
AndropPlus Kernel version 3.18.31-v24
TWRP version 3.0.2-4,
Root with SuperSU v2.79
All flashed with Flashtool, following this wonderful guide : https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/how-to/how-to-unlock-bl-kernel-twrp-root-t3541648
I have noticed that when my device is rooted with this configuration, after about a day (variable), I encounter two problems :
- Facebook app : no more refresh possible. I still have notifications but when clicking on them they lead to nothing. After a couple of try, the app becomes unusable, tells me to refresh as if I was offline and nothing happens. On my device, Facebook is shipped with the phone as a factory application. So is Twitter, but is seems to be OK so far.
- The Play Store works (I can download apps) but I don't have any images : no thumbnails, no screenshots... Only text and green layouts.
I tried to flash again Android 7.1.1 without wiping datas (restoring default kernel and voiding root), the apps work normally again. I assume this has to deal with the custom kernel or the root.
Solutions I tried (but failed) :
1)
boot in recovery mode
wipe dalvik/cache
reboot
wipe cache & datas from : Google Play Store, Google Play Services for Instant Apps, Services Google Play, Facebook
2)
log out from Facebook / Google account and log again
3)
uninstalling Facebook and Google Play with a root app uninstaller
install them again the usual way
So far I don't have more idea of what the problem might be. Do you encounter the same issues or have any idea about it ? Tell me if you need more information.
Thank you.

[Q] Hangouts = Google Play Service not supported on this device ?

My g/f phone is on the last version of Saba Prime v16. We did a force update to get Hangouts today and it worked fine..... until we rebooted it. Now Hangouts reports "Google Play Service, which some of your applications rely on,is not supprted by your device. Please contact the manufacturer".
Google Play Services and Hangouts were uninstalled, phone rebooted, then from play store they were installed again but the message persists.
I have a Desire S with Fallout rom, the same version of both apps and works fine even after multiple reboots....
Any ideas ?
I'm getting the same issue on a VZW Nexus. The weird thing is I have 2 Nexus LTE, one mine, one is my wife's. Both are running the exact same ROM/gapps/kernel/radio.... On one device the update to hangouts was flawless, on the other I get "device not compatible". Then a "play services" won't update error....
I've wiped the ROM clean install and tried to update before restoring other apps and still have issues.
Anybody have ideas to correct?
First idea is it sounds like it might be due to different versions of gapps before installing hangouts; I know that the gapps I flashed onto my phone got updated at some point afterwards, and now looks different to the package I downloaded and flashed originally.
Second idea, do your phones have the same CID? (i.e. same carrier, same sim-unlock state).

Okay I fixed on my end...
It seems as though it was on Google's server end, if that's possible.
The short answer for me was, wipe data > install ROM > install hangouts via apk (previously downloaded)> reboot > flash gapps > update Google now> update Google play services.... Viola. Seems like there should have been an easier fix.
Long Answer
I tried wiping data reinstalling ROM and gapps and that DID NOT work. I was getting the same error for Hangouts, Google Now, and Play Services and then some.... "Device not compatible"
I tried the exact same thing but logged into my Google account rather than my wife's and it worked just fine. No errors... Retried wiping ROM and flashing gapps, used her account, device not compatible again. That's why I'm guessing it was server side if that's possible. Even the web version of Play Store was saying device not compatible. CIDs were restored in each case and running same AOKP version and same Gapps.
That lead me to trying the install without Gapps... You only get so far before you must login to Google for obvious reasons, but for what ever reason, having the app installed on my phone before signing into gapps allowed for updating all of the other Play Services without issue.
It doesn't make sense to me but I'm up and running now...
My Solution
I'm a little late to the party, but this is the easiest post to find on Google for this problem. Mine worked after fresh ROM install, but it would start giving the error after a reboot. After much searching the thing that ultimately worked for me was to uninstall updates for the Play Store. I haven't uninstalled Play Services and after the Store auto updated, I could use Hangouts once again. I am using a HTC Desire with Cool Droid v3 GSM ROM.
I can confirm that steps suggested by MikeAce00 worked flawlessly.
This is what I did with a rom with gapps installed already
1. wipe & install rom -- do not input google credentials
2. install hangouts (google+ not necessary!) apk manually
3. input google credentials
4. update google play services (Hangouts even requested this...happened automatically after inputting the google credentials)
5. restart
6. done! -- hangouts should work
For me it did not seem to make any difference if you restart directly after installing hangouts apk or after inputting the google credentials

I've tried the methods proposed here, but no luck. At poinjt 4 I don't get a request for update, just the same old message about google play services not being supported.
I'm currently going through older versions of gapps and see if I get to a point where Google Play updates the right files in the right order.

[Q] Unable to update apps

The device that i use is a Oneplus one 64gb edition
Android Version 4.4.4
Google Play store version : 4.9.13
Since 8th jan 2015 , i am unable to update or install new apps. The initial error message i got was Error 905. I checked the internet and followed the below steps to resolve it
1) Go to Settings
2) Apps -> all apps
3) find google play store - > uninstall any updates -> clear cache and data
4) Reboot the phone
5) launch google play store , wait till it updates itself and try to download the apps again.
Inspite of following these steps , i was still getting the error message.
I have hard reset the phone 5 times in the last 4 days but to no avail.
Since the last 2 days i am getting error 495.
I have removed my google account from my phone accounts and added it back ( this is as per the number of blogs that are floating on the internet ) but to no avail.
Play store selectively updates apps.
I thought it could be a problem with my WiFi network . So i tried updating/downloading apps using my Cellular network but the problem persists.
Could you please help me out with this issue as my phone currently is not a SMARTphone like it is supposed to be.
I have been flashing roms for the last 2 months on my oneplus one i.e moving between Kitkat roms and Lollipop roms . could this be the problem for my play store to play up ? ( out of the box question)
Have you tried accessing the Play Store and updating via a web browser instead of the app?
yep , tried that . doesnt seem to work . the app doesnt even show up in the play store of the phone that i was trying to download .

[Q] (Google Play Store) Error retrieving information from server [RPC:S-7 :AEC-7]

Greetings,
I had some issues uninstalling xposed on my HTC One M8 that was recently updated to lollipop so I reverted back to a stock lollipop rom directly from Telus. Every time I try and download an app from the Play Store I get the following message.
"nameofapp" could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-7 :AEC-7])
This is what I have tried so far:
- Clear cache on Google Play Services (Framework) and Google Play Store
- removed update from Google Play Store
- updated Play Store manually to newest APK
- rebooted in between these steps
- removed Google Account + cleared cache + all data for all Google Apps and services
Sometimes when I reboot it will let me update or download 1-3 apps, then it will just bring back that error. I'm at a loss as to what I should try as googling this error brings up the same solutions every single time. Other then this issue the phone itself appears to be functioning properly. My phone is unlocked and rooted but I do not have xposed or any other custom mods running. I'm also using the latest version of TWRP. I have also noticed that sometimes when I disconnect from wifi and attempt to download from 4G the download actually goes through. Not exactly a solution as I have limited data available to me. Any ideas?

Flash GApps via TWRP. If it doesn't help, bring your phone back to full stock, including flashing firmware + rom and make sure to format systen + data partition
before flashing the new rom.

Thanks for the help. I tried to flash the google apps but TWRP kept giving me errors that the package wasn't compatible with my phone. I located a nandroid of Telus lollipop stock and flashed that after I have formatted the system and data partitions as you have recommended. I dont believe I needed to do firmware as I have never had anything but stock firmware on the device. Everything appears to be functioning now as I can download and update from the play store once again.
Out of curiosity are you able to tell me why I encountered that issue? I cant seem to find exactly what that error even means. While i'm still very new to the android scene with flashing custom roms and device modification I have never once had that issue.
that is a "host" error, using a file manager, go to your /system/etc folder, open the "hosts" file, as a text file, and erase all.. except the local host:

Head into settings > apps > google play services > clear data.
After that head down to apkmirror.com and download Google Play Services and manually update the app.
This should fix the systemupdate service bug on the older version of Google Play Services

I have gone back to previous version.
Try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psvtQB7NizI. I have had to use it several times and still have the trouble. Best case is factory wipe and reload from Google app.

Thanks for your message!
I can't access google play app crashes and I can't upgrade the app via the google play webpage.
I downloaded the latest version of the google play services (it appears to be the same version I already have installed) but I can't clear the data of that app (there is no clear data button just clear cache).
In order to install the apk, all I have to do is select it with a file explorer app (provided I have set the option of allowing the install of non google play apps?
Thanks,
Marc

If Google Play FC, head into settings > apps > Google Play > click clear data and force close
To clear data of Google Play Services, head into settings > apps > Google Play Services > (I think is) manage storage and it'll bring you into Google Play Services app, scroll to the bottom and click clear data. After that, force stop and uninstall any updates you may have for the app.
To manually update/install an app, use a file manager and head into the directory where you downloaded the app and just click on it and package installer will do the job it needs to do
hi all,
**EDIT** 20/10/15
So I wiped my phone again - cache and system. Flashed "cm-12-20150901-SNAPSHOT-YNG4NAO253-bacon" and "gapps-lp-20141212-signed" annnnnd it all works!
I still don't understand the cause of any of my troubles and I haven't tried doing this with CM 12.1 because stagefright is still an issue?
I cannot get Google Play services to function properly on my OnePlus one- have tried Factory resets, installing from a backup, Stock, CWM and TWRP recoveries. installing from apk hosting sites. clearing cache and all data in settings>apps>google blah blah, hoping someone can help me.
- several months ago i flashed TWRP as my new recovery and then flashed SuperSU and I have enjoyed this set up ever since as I love using the app AllStream which requires root access.
- after putting off updating my phone since doing this, I finally decided to update the other day...
- I downloaded the CM12.1 .zip , moved it onto my phone, booted it into recovery and flashed the bastard (figured everything was going smoothly at this point).
- When my phone booted up I figured I would download the Google Play store from the built in browser, and then download all my apps through that, BUT when I logged into my google account the play store said all my apps were already installed???
I downloaded some apps from some apk hosting websites and installed them (allstream, facebook, snapchat and a couple others) they all worked fine.
When I downloaded Google Play services Version: 8.2.99 (8299240) for Android 5.0+ (Lollipop, API 21) from apkmirror.com it installed and then gave me the error "unfortunately google play services has stopped"
every 3 seconds or so.
I have tried flashing Stock, CWM, Philz and TWRP recoveries, doing a factory reset and then flashing the CM12.1.zip. get the error in all cases.
I have tried clearing cache and all app data in phone settings>apps>google PS>clear cache/delete data
I have not had Privacy Guard running ever (some forums have suggested this can cause issues).
**EDIT** 19/10/15
I've realized since posting that I have had Privacy Guard running (i had thought it was a separate app).
I have since experimented with different settings within Privacy guard such as turning the "wake up" and "keep awake" options on or off - no success
No idea what to do now, have I done something obvious? What else can I try? What other information should I provide to help diagnosis?

Can't complete google backup restore / Phone stuck completing setup

In set-up wizard I login with google account and choose restore from cloud
When it's completing setup (my apps and data) it hangs on 47 ou of 87
Waited for a whole day for it to finish...nothing
Reset device 2nd time
Did another google backup on my old phone
Same thing this time at 60 out of 87
Edit:
Factory reset
No google account this time
Managed to update apps already installed on device, can't install new apps without signing-in
Disable all automatic updates etc.... sign in with google account, can't install apps "waiting for download"
also had this error during restore but doesn't seem to matter
Updating apps on playstore doesn't work, installing new apps also doesn't work...everything gets queued up and no progress
Really disapointed with this, maybe it's faulty?
Edit:
Did yet another system/factory reset. And this time I chose restore backup from another phone, hope it works.... update: it didn't, same thing 36 out of 87
UPDATE: MAIN POST EDITED
So I added my google account after setting up the device, I managed to restore a lot of apps BUT some of them failed and/or can't install them from playstore.
Tried deleting cache and storage from PlayStore. Also tried disabling MIUI optimizations and even letting the screen on ∞ time and let it install overnight......nothing
The list of apps appear to be random, so I'll just keep updating it
The list
Android system webview - can't update
PokemonGo - can't install
Flud - can't install
For apps download/update change the connected WiFi settings to "static"
For crashes I would suggest to "clear cache" and "clear data" of these apps: Phone, SIM Toolkit, and Contacts
If it didn't work, then factory reset and start fresh (don't restore from cloud) it could be something from backup that conflict with MIUI

Thx for the tips I'll try them Edit: only had crashes on device setup
I did factory reset(4th time) and haven't restored from cloud yet, I̶'̶m̶ ̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶p̶e̶r̶l̶y̶ ̶u̶p̶d̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶i̶n̶s̶t̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶a̶p̶p̶s̶ ̶n̶o̶w̶. can only update some apps already installed on the device and phone hangs when installing google apps that are part of the device setup.
I think this problem has to do with miui aggressive apps freeze/lock battery saver policies
Anyone knows how to disable that? I did disable miui optimizations and wifi throttling in developer settings (And no I don't have battery saver on)

I'm no expert on miui yet by try to lock google play store in the memory. You can do that in the recents list. Also make sure that all the needed apps have the right permissions (storage etc.).

Flud - can't install always stuck at 66% (25-09-2020 managed to install it today...dunno why)
Anyways I unlocked bootloader etc. Still can't update some apps like, messages, chrome and system webview
But what is important :
PlayStore settings -> scroll to the bottom and under Play Protect certification -> Device not certified
Is this normal?

Same thing happened to my device when I bought it, but I managed to install everything. All it took was just a restart.
Also, keeping your bootloader unlock will remove the Play Store certification, the only way to be certified again is to restore the stock rom again and lock the bootloader, otherwise you may encounter further problems with Google services in the future.
