Missing AT&T Bands 29 and 30... - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

Should AT&T users be worried that the new U11 does not include bands 29 and 30? After doing some Googling, it does seem that these bands are pretty important especially in congested areas like LA or NYC.

I think it's not hardware limitation, you can patch the baseband later since s-off

That's unfortunate. While it's not going to impact coverage, it will impact prerformsnce.

What does that have to do with the OP?

If it's not a hardware limitation which means HTC could open up those bands via a update.

It seems like 29 and 30 helps with speed and not reception/signal strength? I doubt this would be a big issue but if this is indeed not a hardware limitation then I don't see why htc couldn't enable 29 and 30 in a software update.
Maybe us at&t users should make some noise on there twitter...

I wonder if LineageOS gets ported to this phone, could it implement these missing bands?

Is it possible to enable these bands?

Didn't know if anyone here on T-Mobile US has tried the EU Sensation but I received mine today, and so far everything is quite nice. Phone feels solid and has a good weight to it. I tried out the speed test and..... I got similar speeds to my G2x. =D Now all I'm missing is wifi calling.
If you want me to try anything let me know. I'll post pictures later after I get back.

There is no 4G radio on the US Sensation, it is just capable of 4G speeds (DL14.4/UL5.68)
Im not sure whether there is really difference even in the 3G frequencies, as the european model also supports AWS (1700mhz) in addition to 900/2100 frequencies used in Europe.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the main difference is the marketing name and t-mobile branding.

Just want to let you know that AWS is actually 1700/2100. It uses one frequency for downlink, one for uplink.

T-Mobile & AT&T (for now) actually dont have real 4G. They have what they call 4G speeds. It is the same as HSPA+ outside USA.
Both the Sensation & Sensation "4G" on HTC's website & T-mobiles website have the same Internet speeds:
Under Internet: HTC's website for the Sensation list speeds under 3G as Up to 14.4 Mbps download speed and up to 5.76 Mbps upload speed.
T-Mobile's website for the Sensation 4G lists the Internet spped for 4G as Up to 14.4 Mbps download speed and up to 5.76 Mbps upload speed.

Based on photo evidence posted in other threads there's an extra connector (antenna?) on the back cover of the TMO US version of the phone. So, the Euro and US models are different.

This is true, forgot to mention about it. It must be antenna for this 1700mhz frequency which isn't in use in Europe. This whole AWS thing is new to me, as in Europe we don't have such thing. Some wrote here on xda that he imported a euro-version of the phone to USA and it worked fine in t-mobiles network.

The limitation will be the hardware, the radios in the AT&T/Rogers version will not work with TMO's 4G network.

Information is conflicting, but some specs for the AT&T One X list the AWS band (1700/2100 MHz) used by T-Mobile for 3G/4G. Its not supported in software, but some have speculated (maybe wishful thinking) that the hardware is there, and something just needs to be changed in software to make it work.
This was the case with the Galaxy Note. AWS is not officially supported, but the hardware is actually there, and one of the folks here on XDA was able to hack it to work.
Its not a sure bet whether such a thing is possible on the AT&T One X. Seems largely speculation for the time being. Unless it really happens, using the One X on EDGE seems like a poor compromise. The One S doesn't have nearly as nice a screen, but same chipset, and still a nice phone. And if I were on T-Mob, I would certainly consider it.

Hmm... Ok well I will gladly eat the words as I am all about devices being able to work with the broadest number of carriers...
The ability to do that is rare but perhaps the most recent chipsets have all the radio components there to make it only a SW issue...
I'll happily stand corrected if someone has it working!

This has only been the case on the Galaxy Note, that I'm aware. And a (somewhat skeptical) "maybe" on the One X.
I think its less of a "recent chipset" thing, and more an indication of market forces at the time. My hunch is that it had something to do with the (now defunct) merger deal between AT&T and T-Mobile. As both these phones were being spec'ed and designed around the time the deal was looking like it was going through. These devices would have acted as "bridge" devices for when the AT&T started taking over the T-mobile frequencies.
If the deal had gone through, my guess is that the AWS bands would have been fully supported on these devices, and we would have seen more phones with similar band support.

Perhaps but at&t owns no 1700 mhz spectrum but does have some 2100 mhz although a lot less since they gave up some huge chunks in the breakup deal with TMO. I believe though that the way that TMO uses their spectrum for 4G is that one band say 1700 is for download and the other, 2100, is for upload...
Previously the devices for at&t didn't have the ability to do the 1700 band but most had the 2100 capability since it is also used internationally.
So if it does have the expanded radio capability it would be interesting to see if someone could disable the unused radios to assist with battery life... With so many smart people here I am sure that already is happening but just my curiosity. TMO users would want to disable the low band radios 700/850/900 since TMO USA doesn't use those so why waste power on them, AT&T users would want to disable the 1700 band, etc...
Again probably already being done and I am just getting to the party...
There had been a few phones this had worked on, sgs2, lg thrill, the note as stated before. I think the radio hardware just needs to be told what bands to look for, but I would be way wrong.

It happens as soon as it activates data on LTE, and will cause intermittent X band detection. I am using sprint, with a 32GB black nexus 5. I am connected to Band 25. I have activated bands 26 and 41, though they haven't rolled out in my area yet. My note 2 did not do this. I haven't tested it, but I wonder if attempting to detect bands 26 and/or 41 cause this, possibly evening scanning the range of available frequencies (I have it set to Global).
Further experimenting is in order, but for now I may just disable that band on my detector. All the cops around here run Ka band anyway.
Just turn off x band. I've driven a lot, and never once got hit with actual x band radar from a police officer...
Also, this hasn't been happening to me on my Escort 9500.

This is terrible advice if done without research.
I know of many districts/precincts that use X as their primary band. Usually small towns that do not have upgraded tech. That being said, I live in a major town outside a city and they use X/Ka/Lidar.
I have a 9500i and have not encountered this issue.
On second inspection, my Nexus 5 connected to Sprint LTE band 25 is setting off my K band warning on my Valentine 1, not X band. While I don't like to do this, disabling or reducing the sensitivity of K band, I have never been lit up on anything but KA or laser. I do hope I can figure out if there is any setting to change that would fix this. I will need to try different settings to see if I can isolate the problem, though it may very well be something I can't avoid.
Also, this happens a lot more when the Nexus 5 is in the dash-mounted dock, which is in front of my radar detector. I have my detector mounted at the very top of the dash and hard-wired in for power.
To those participating in this discussion, please try putting your phone in front of the detector. Also, are you connecting to LTE? If so, which provider / bands?
In my experience, it does not happen on LTE. Only HSPA. I am on AT&T. I have two buddies with Nexus 5s, and their radar detectors go off also.
I just remembered this quirk...
Several years ago I had similar happen: In backwoods of TX my Samsung Moment (on Sprint CDMA) would trip X-band on my V1 as it switched back-and-forth b/w roaming/home mode. I guess phone was tripping V1 as it sent roaming query signal to towers or something? I had to temp disable X band on V1 till I got back to DFW where roaming wasn't required.
Sorry, but I don't know if prob still exists for my current N5 because I sold my V1 years ago. I just don't speed anymore--guess I'm getting old.
I guess one could research frequencies and compare frequencies of x-band and CDMA; even if frequencies aren't close in the RF spectrum, there's prolly some weird harmonics interference going on considering the close physical proximity of phone and detector--and the V1 is known for being hyper-sensitive.

[Q] Nexus 5 Simultaneous Voice/Data

Thought this may be of interest... I see other threads out there related to some older phones, but nothing related to the GNex5, so I thought I'd start one here.
I'm on Sprint, and apparently I can't do simultaneous voice and data with LTE or 3g during voice calls. Wifi seems to work just fine. Anyone else experiencing this with Sprint? What's the experience for those using T-Mobile/ATT? Stock or unlocked? I've also noticed that I'm unable to update my PRL or Profile (Network Error). I am unlocked and rooted at the moment. Did not notice this as I didn't tinker with it prior to unlocking.
Coming from Samsung GS3 and GN2 with Sprint where the LTE/3G radio is separated, I did not realize this was still a technological challenge... I went with this phone simply because it was inexpensive for the hardware and I don't have to renew my contract to avoid paying an arm and a leg. Have I just hit a "You get what you pay for" scenario, putting me (or anyone using CDMA) back 3 years in radio tech??
The phone has to support SVDO in order to do voice+data on Sprint. Very, very few phones do (the EVO 4G LTE did, the HTC One didn't, for example). It requires a special antenna configuration as well IIRC.

Unfortunately no, the nexus 5 does not support SVDO or SVLTE. This means it also will only connect to one airlink at a time - when you receive a call, it will switch to 1x, pausing your LTE, similar to older handsets.

Too bad... Found more on s4gru regarding this:
"That is what we have been told. Sprint tri band LTE devices will not support SVLTE. Whether that is due to band 26 LTE 800, band 41 TD-LTE 2600, or the combination of the two, we do not know. And the sample size is very small right now to project unconditionally into the future. But the standard expectation going forward should be no SVLTE on Sprint multi band LTE devices. Simultaneous voice and data will have to be accomplished by other means, such as third party VoIP apps and eventually VoLTE."
I are a sad sprint customer lol. Also why I went with a multi carrier phone off contract June 2014 can't come soon enough, cause I loves this phone!
This was my biggest complaints with this phone on sprint. I couldn't do it so I activated it using straight talk for att and couldn't be happier. It's unfortunate that spark phones on sprint won't do simultaneous voice and data, at least for now. But I'm not willing to compromise.

I hear that. My biggest issue with switching providers is that I average 5-6gb of data usage/mo on my line and about 12gb combined with the other two phones on my family plan (Ting told me not to switch lol). It's hard to beat the bargain offered for services rendered from Sprint. Nickles and dimes I suppose. Oh well, maybe 2015 will be the year of the phone... (Oh wait, we'll probably have 5g by then and tri-band will evolve to octa-band with the same problems )

I have ST AT&T service. When I am on a call though, I lose LTE. It switches me to H (HPSA I think). Speed is not terrible, but would be nicer to have LTE while on a call. Do you have the same experience? If not, do you know how I can have LTE while on a call? Thanks.

Nope, that's by design. It has to do with available radios. If LTE isn't on a separate radio it can't be used simultaneously. On the upside, having less radios means better battery life overall.

Anyone here will jump to Z5/Z5C/Z5P?

Anyone here will jump to Z5/Z5C/Z5P?
Only if it comes to Tmobile..... then again, have to see how the camera is. If it's as good as they say it is, might just have to buy one unlocked.
If you can get an unlocked version that carries all t-mobile bands then I'll probably go with it. Otherwise I'm going nexus.
I think i will.
Finally a fingerprint sensor Xperia which i really wished for. Not sure if i go premium or standard. The standard is a setback on battery life though. But compared to premium im not sure how that will compare. If i can get 2 days on any of those two i will go premium probably. I will wait for review anyways and test it in the store.
Hope they have sorted the SD810 overheat.. It looks like they have done something..

T-Mobile is asking OEM's to disable band 12 support, on non TMO approved phones, which is needed for good indoor reception. This is because VoLTE on 700 has to be certified separately by TMO, and unlocked phones without band 12 VoLTE support can't fall back to 4G when switching from data to cellular leading to no calls but with full signal, this could cause issues in emergencies in areas that only have band 12 (rare issue but could cause legal problems)

Thanks for the info. So pretty much any phone t-mobile doesn't officially carry will be unable to get band 12?
I just hope if they do carry it they don't lock down the bootloader. The Z3 is a great phone but I need my AOSP fix. Luckily I still have my old S3 to tinker with.
