Thought this may be of interest... I see other threads out there related to some older phones, but nothing related to the GNex5, so I thought I'd start one here.
I'm on Sprint, and apparently I can't do simultaneous voice and data with LTE or 3g during voice calls. Wifi seems to work just fine. Anyone else experiencing this with Sprint? What's the experience for those using T-Mobile/ATT? Stock or unlocked? I've also noticed that I'm unable to update my PRL or Profile (Network Error). I am unlocked and rooted at the moment. Did not notice this as I didn't tinker with it prior to unlocking.
Coming from Samsung GS3 and GN2 with Sprint where the LTE/3G radio is separated, I did not realize this was still a technological challenge... I went with this phone simply because it was inexpensive for the hardware and I don't have to renew my contract to avoid paying an arm and a leg. Have I just hit a "You get what you pay for" scenario, putting me (or anyone using CDMA) back 3 years in radio tech??
The phone has to support SVDO in order to do voice+data on Sprint. Very, very few phones do (the EVO 4G LTE did, the HTC One didn't, for example). It requires a special antenna configuration as well IIRC.

Unfortunately no, the nexus 5 does not support SVDO or SVLTE. This means it also will only connect to one airlink at a time - when you receive a call, it will switch to 1x, pausing your LTE, similar to older handsets.

Too bad... Found more on s4gru regarding this:
"That is what we have been told. Sprint tri band LTE devices will not support SVLTE. Whether that is due to band 26 LTE 800, band 41 TD-LTE 2600, or the combination of the two, we do not know. And the sample size is very small right now to project unconditionally into the future. But the standard expectation going forward should be no SVLTE on Sprint multi band LTE devices. Simultaneous voice and data will have to be accomplished by other means, such as third party VoIP apps and eventually VoLTE."
I are a sad sprint customer lol. Also why I went with a multi carrier phone off contract June 2014 can't come soon enough, cause I loves this phone!
This was my biggest complaints with this phone on sprint. I couldn't do it so I activated it using straight talk for att and couldn't be happier. It's unfortunate that spark phones on sprint won't do simultaneous voice and data, at least for now. But I'm not willing to compromise.

I hear that. My biggest issue with switching providers is that I average 5-6gb of data usage/mo on my line and about 12gb combined with the other two phones on my family plan (Ting told me not to switch lol). It's hard to beat the bargain offered for services rendered from Sprint. Nickles and dimes I suppose. Oh well, maybe 2015 will be the year of the phone... (Oh wait, we'll probably have 5g by then and tri-band will evolve to octa-band with the same problems )

I still have a family plan on sprint so if my data amount becomes an issue I'll go back but for now I'll sacrifice more data for fast and always available data, and at a rate of $45 I'll take it.

I have ST AT&T service. When I am on a call though, I lose LTE. It switches me to H (HPSA I think). Speed is not terrible, but would be nicer to have LTE while on a call. Do you have the same experience? If not, do you know how I can have LTE while on a call? Thanks.

Nope, that's by design. It has to do with available radios. If LTE isn't on a separate radio it can't be used simultaneously. On the upside, having less radios means better battery life overall.

And since we're all pretty sure due to FCC filings that the Moto hardware supports band 12, could anyone tell me itd be possible to open this great budget phone up to t mobiles expanding 700mhz coverage?
Even if you unlock the band, without VoLTE support you wouldn't be able to make calls or send/receive sms messages. This is why Motorola disabled it.
Is that really so important though? Data coverage is all I really need. If there's 2g or 3g fallback texts will still come in, and I think I've gotten texts on lte only mode on my galaxy s4 even on roms that don't support VoLTE or WiFi calling, so texts might still work. Calling can easily be done over Google hangouts as a data call anyway. The coverage is most important to power users, not making it compatible with calls

I'll be driving to Seattle from Chicago next week and I could use all of the additional coverage I can get. I really don't care if I can't get traditional voice / text, hangouts etc are perfectly fine stop gaps. I'm going to buy a Moto G from Best Buy and try this but with no band 12 near me I can't know if it actually is working. If anyone who has coverage in their area wants to give it a shot, I think everyone would love to know if its possible.

I returned my phone, and that guide seems to be very device specific. Since no one has done it for the Moto G 3rd gen yet, I could easily brick my phone with the only fix as "flash the stock FTF file" which seems to be some special file for sony devices? I'd rather not get in over my head and ruin a brand new device.

Just so you know.. most of the twin cities area you'd be driving through has band 12 with t-mobile (multiple sources on Google as well as personal experience working at MSP). Band 12 probably wont be deployed anytime soon in rural areas because T-mobile is only using it in urban areas to penetrate buildings with lower frequencies with less line-of-sight areas. What you'd be wanting to look for is T-Mobile refarming their old 2G (EDGE) towers to LTE. Regardless, even with 2G coverage you can still get calls/text/Google Maps to work.
I travel all of North America for work and I'm in a different state every week. I carry a T-Mobile phone as my primary and a Cricket phone (through AT&T) as a backup. I know most people don't have that luxury of carrying two carriers with them, so I keep up to date on this stuff as best I can. People have been getting really mis-informed with this whole T-Mobile Band 12 thing lately.
Another trivial fact.. Minneapolis metro area is one of the best covered metro locations in North America for T-Mobile. Because they bought out VoiceStream, that was one of their top markets. I remember having them when I lived up there years ago!
Anyway, have a safe trip! I'm jealous you're heading to Seattle. Used to live out there as well and I woul do anything to move back! I just got married out there last December.

Regular sms needs a voice signal. If you got a text with only data it was an mms.
I purchased the Pixel from the Google store, and I'm pretty sure it will work on MetroPCS, I'm just hoping someone who knows a little more about how that aspect of the network works can give me a little more insight.
I'm getting a little sick of paying $130 a month for 1 phone with 16 GB of data, and that is after a 22% discount through work...

I'm confused if you're paying that much why don't you just switch to their parent network(T-Mobile). You'll get much more incentives on a better network for a lower price.

the $130 is my price on Verizon. MetroPCS is $60 a month flat for unlimited data, and it doesn't throttle you down after a certain amount used. My biggest concern was T-Mobile customers having priority on the towers over MetroPCS customers during high congestion. but my friend who has MetroPCS used his all day at the Minnesota State Fair, data, calls, whatever, and never had an issue. That's 200,000+ people in a little over a square mile area, if he wasnt having priority issues then, I doubt I ever will.
It's mostly a question of since I bought the Google version of the Pixel instead of the Verizon version, will I be able to just stick a MetroPCS simcard in it and and have it work.
Oh I see. Was very lost with pricing lol, but yes seeing that metro pcs is a true gsm carrier all the bands for their network should be on the pixel...
It should work just fine. My experience with metro in one of the largest cities in the country (Houston, TX) has been great. I haven't noticed any slower data performance or call drops than when I had TMo proper, and you still get all the TMo perks, like not charging for data for popular apps like Youtube and Spotify (I don't pay for unlimited).

I'll be doing unlimited so that I can use Playstation Vue mobile without issues, and to watch Red Zone once I find another cheap alternative (Going to hate giving up my $1.99 a month access to it through Verizon. Vue charges $39.99 for 6 months). I watched an hour of the Olympics while mobile once and used about 4 GB of data...
I am thinking about going this route... but want to be sure that the Pixel will work with all of the TMobile bands so i'll have good service as well as the Wifi Calling work. Anyone with MetroPCS and a Pixel able to confirm?

Should work just fine on both WiFi calling and even voice over LTE. The only band the pixel doesn't have is Band 71.

Do you know how important Band 71 is?
I ask because I first had a Verizon Branded V20 and brought it to T-Mobile.. The reception was fairly poor around my house.. would barely get 4g .. and seemed to be bouncing towers... but when I sold it and got a T-Mobile Branded V20.. the reception is tons better.. works great. So i just want to make sure Band 71 isn't a primary one and i'll go back to having bad service with a Verizon / Unlocked Pixel version.

Band 71 is only for extended LTE. Really isn't that big of a deal. Verizon branded phones are different they have bands that are sometimes locked for Verizon. The only real difference between the Verizon pixel and the pixel from google was the unlock able boot-loader. As for band 71 it's not deployed in some cities and depends on where you live. Th most important band is band 12 which the google pixel has. I've had the pixel for Verizon and never had any problems with service or even download speeds. As for band 71 not even the pixel 2 or the iPhone x have it so you really don't need to worry about it. It should work on Metro pcs, but i believe you need update your imei through the Metro pcs website.
I just picked up a pixel 1 in great condition yesterday and did carrier swap this morning by phone and it works very well. Go for it
Yep! The wife bought me one! So I was able to get it up and running on Friday... been using it all weekend! So far it seems to be working wonderful!
So I have bought a HTC u11 plus and should get it today. What I have done the past week is check my bands at the places I visit most. And while driving. I used lte discovery app to help me with this and some Google searches. In my findings band 2 is hardly used when I am at home or driving. My 1+5 is always on band 4 or 12. At home is the only place where it is on band 2 but it switches to 4 and uses this mostly but I use wifi calling at home due to coverage sucking at my house. I did a Google search on band 2 and it is not very good around my areas. So people with TMobile USA should be fine to get this phone and use here. Also my cousin has a HTC 10 from overseas which has less bands enabled and has never had an issue with lte or call connection with TMobile. Once I get the phone I will do more testing for TMobile folks. Let me know your results if you have any.

Lol i got the notification on this and saw CJ. For a minute i was like is he referring to me? Who the heck is CJ lol i laughed after i figured it out. . Anyway so after having the phone in my hands with all of its beauty and awesomeness. I could not take it anymore. This phone works great if you have a wifi and data connection all the time. But for people who still makes voice phone calls it is the worst.. so bad i put it on ebay yesterday. I got so frustrated the other day. I was trying to make a call and when you do, it drops down to 2g,3g. The call qualty on that is horrible. The calls always dropped and when i did have a good connection the quality was horrible. Half the time i would not get text messages and not everyone uses whats app and that is what i was trying to use because i always will have data. No VOLTE which i missed no WIfi calling which does come in handy. So i kept looking and band 2 does more than LTE I believe that band 2 also deals with AWS which is needed for calling. Man i tried.... i tried to put up with it here in the states. The phone itself is just amazing the Pixel that got away is what i call it. So if you are here in the states Dont buy it unless you have data connection and everyone has like data messaging or calling for a strong data connection. I am really sad and dissapointed at HTC the phone i have been waiting for since the HTC sensation 4g. Hopes this helps.

Well, crap. Thank you for conducting the experiment. Yeah, it's the Pixel 2XL WITH an sd card slot, which is what I want, except apparently without Band 2, the thing's hobbled. I was gonna install the Google HDR+ camera app and have it all! Damn.
I got my hopes up because I saw reports of people bringing the Exynos Note 8 over here and getting it to work, but IT has Band 2! Seriously, how tough is it to add these bands! Do people want to sell phones or not?!!
Anyway, thanks again. An answer is an answer, even if it's not the one I was hoping for.
And yeah, if you're reclaiming that term, I completely respect that, but I still gotta go with CJ.
Sucks to hear that. I've been using my HTC U11+ in the Bay Area for about two weeks now and so far it's been absolutely flawless. Not a single issue finding LTE or dropping calls.

I've had the phone since late December and have had the same experience in the greater Baltimore area. Must be different bands/stronger network in our areas.

Sorry for the delayed response, but I got it from Amazon. Took about 4-5 days to receive it even though Amazons system said 2 weeks. I also just noticed that it's a decent amount cheaper now as well compared to when I bought it in December by over $100.

I agree with this I've had zero issues so far since getting this phone. Only had it for a day now but prior to I ran LTE Discover on my HTC U11 and saw I very rarely used Band 2 (San Diego). After some digging I saw how Band 2 works on T-Mobile and I'm OK without it. I'll be in Vegas in a week so I'll be curious how it holds up there, though I don't really expect hiccups. The one thing I do want to get back is VOLTE/VOWIFI.

I'm not far from you and I just picked up my U11+ from Swappa. Does this phone actually read "4G LTE" when in LTE service area? I have not seen it yet. I have the Nexus 6 and a Note 5 and both have had that when in and around Maryland. THanks for replying when you do.

No, it just says 4G. However, when using apps such as Speed Test by Ookla, it says I'm connected to "LTE T-Mobile", and the speed test are roughly what I was getting on my previous iPhone 6S Plus.

Thank you. I did install LTE Discovery and was able to get information on what band I am on and more. It keeps flipping back to 'H' loads which is made me wondering what I might be doing wrong if it is not in the phone itself. I am in a strong 4G LTE area for work (base) and home. My Nexus 6 and my Note 5 always read 4G LTE in an area as such. I still love this phone even though it's not 2 weeks old yet.
I'm tempted to get this for an upgrade from my HTC 10. I don't care too much about the dual camera for the HTC 12+, plus I want it in Red which might not even come out in the US. So with the bigger battery 3,900 mah, about $200 less and the red color now. Would this be a good buy if I typically travel around the east coast?
I have one I purchased on a recent trip overseas to Taiwan. My carrier here in the US is Tmobile and I only have connectivity issues in rural areas. Can someone point me to a stock ROM from Tmobile that would be compatible with this phone?

I had a pretty length discussion with a Verizon rep the other day and opened a ticket in the end. I requested to revert back to 4G LTE from their side, (went through changing my plan down a tier).
I selected LTE/CDMA in settings > connections > mobile networks >network mode = no change in signal and still saw 5G.
Went ahead and downloaded the Samsung band selector app and changed it to use LTE only = no 5G displayed anymore and just see LTE.
After a few hours, i then see 5G signal again and find out that the selection i made in band selector is now on 5G (recommended) again.....
Why?
This is an unlocked note 20 ultra 5G activated w/Verizon.
May be power management, make sure it's not active.
Clear system cache.
Do a network reset and clear sim toolkit data.
Make sure the app is setup right and check it's data/battery settings. Clear data, start again.
Play with it...

Could be that VZW has changed all of the bandwidth in your area to 5G.
I admit, it sounds doubtful this early in the 5G rollout game, just throwing the possibility out there.
A more plausible answer is VZW still has both 4G LTE & 5G active in your area & there's just more "room" available on 5G & using 4G only for the devices that are not 5G compatible, regardless of the settings that you locked-in for 4G.

Not. 5G isn't physically capable of 4G's coverage, it's physically impossible without more cell towers than they can build in many areas. 5G is completely dependent on 4G to fill in all its gaps where it's coverage is limited by distance and obstacles.
In areas that have a large 5G presence it may actually free up more 4G bandwidth.
No, 5G isn't going to make your 4G LTE phone obsolete
This transition is different from earlier cellular generation shifts, which means 4G could be useful a lot longer.

I agree,it's HIGHLY unlikely 5G has totally supplanted 4G in its entirety in any areas yet.
However, it does seem VZW's network management is in play, it would explain why the 4G settings aren't sticking.
I know on T-Mobile, the settings will stick for 4G only........
Regardless, at least the problem isn't lack of coverage. If one is wanting to stick w/4G only,I doubt the difference in battery consumption isn't worth worrying about.

It may be it's not configured correctly. May be the access point information. That's beyond my skillset but Verizon advanced tech support should be able to sort that out! When doubt, just keep calling and escalating the issue.

Crap like this is one of the reasons I just bought another new N10+ 4G. The fast 5G rollout has created many issues not just with carriers but down to the chipsets in the phones and their firmware. I'm giving it a few more years to level out...

Been so long since I had to mess w/editing an APN, totally forgot about that.
After suffering w/Sprint's network & initially waiting for T-Mobile to catch up, I've been fortunate for the past 4-5 years in having decent coverage w/T-Mobile.
I hear ya on the Note 10+, it's still got legs for several more years of use.

You would think the Verizon tech support would have checked that. Sometimes you get a good tech, sometimes you get a do a factory reset dud.
After a year with the S4+ I wanted next year's newest. Not so with the 10+, it's still fun and a solid workhorse. I don't want to deal with R's bs; Q doesn't seem too bad even better than Pie in some respects. At this point I know most of the 10+'s quirks but oddly still exploring some of its many features.
Samsung's offerings this year made the choice even easier, unfortunately. A SD card slot is mandatory, and color rendering is better on the 10+ than the N20U plus that damn R factor, so... it was multiple factors.
Both Android and Samsung shot 2021's line out of the sky for me... a real masterpiece.
Thank you both for the info. So far, LTE has remained after reconfiguring again earlier today. I suspect I'll wake up to 5G and either way, calling VZ to endure another likely waste of my day lol.

I think you need to dig into Verizon tech support harder and find the right tech to straighten this out.
I'm not sure how the 5G software is structured on the phones as I never had it.
It may be possible to use a package disabler or do a adb edit to kill it's service.
Be aware it may have dependencies; look out for that or the possibly increased battery usage. I prefer a PD over edits because you can use it on the fly with no reboot needed.
