My friend's S8+ (thankfully not mine) was placed face down on a table.
Unfortunately, she slid the phone a bit causing tiny scratches to appear on the screen.
I've read online that using toothpaste or cerium oxide would work to remove scratches.
Can anyone confirm ?
I didn't think Gorilla Glass 5 would scratch so easily.
The scratches are really small, and not deep at all, but kind of disappointing to hear that it scratched.
Any one know any remedies that might work to remove faint scratches?
Dont do it. Ive tried it in the past and it doesn't work. There are a few problems. Firstly it can make the glass hot, and damage the screen, secondly, if you do manage to polish it down it will leave the glass feeling very rough and extremely grippy, and no aftermarket coating that you can apply change that. Its not a nice feeling at all.
It seems like Gorilla glass doesnt respond to being polished like normal glass does.
The best thing to do is put a screen protector on, with luck it will 'fill' the scratch and make it invisible.
Thank you for the extremely quick response!
I was thinking the same thing.
I'll let her know

Your best bet is to apply a plastic screen protector, they usually hide the micro scratches surprisingly well!

What about tempered glasses or wet install screen protectors ?
don't think so, they dont actually make contact with the glass like plastic does and that's when the magic happens.

Gorilla glass has a p roduct that fills the scratches to repair them. It polishes out yo look perfect. Thats what I'd recommend.

Gorilla glass 5 is not as hard as 4. Which supposedly gives it a better impact resistance. But also makes it more prone to scratches

Anybody have any methods for taking care of scratches on the tb screen? I know somebody the other day that the tb uses a type of gorilla glass.. I was just wondering if there was a way to polish it out or anything along those lines, I really hate to use the screen protectors.

I haven't seen anything yet that will reliably "fill the gap" that results from scratches. If indeed the glass is Gorilla Glass, it certainly seems to be scratch prone. There is a nice, long thread here titled something like "I tried to scratch my TB with keys". Perhaps you may find something useful in there (though I think half the posts were flames, lol)
This is the first touch screen phone ever that you will probably do need a screen protector for. Problem is I hate screen protectors and somehow this "gorilla glass" seems more like plastic to me. Especially after using some heavy cut diamond glaze compound made by meguiars my huge scratch in the screen in ggone. Makes me think its some kind of polycarbinate and not what everyone thinks its is. I finished up with a standard car wax and haven't gotten a scratch sense. This may sound stupid but I was despereate and trying everything and that's what worked.
My scratch was long and noticible but not that deep so don't expect miracles.

This screen sucks, if it is gorilla glass it has something applied to the top of it because it scratches so easily. My DINC and Fascinate has much more durable screens. Between the screen and the kickstand flaking, this phone is lacking in durability.
I use a screen protector and while the screen protector has scratches all over it, the edges (The screen that the protector doesn't cover) have absolutely nothing on them. You can see scratches going from the protector and then should continue on to the screen but they just don't. At least for me, this screen is pretty solid.
Also, I use my kickstand everyday for videos, youtube, etc. and have no flaking what so ever. I have owned the phone since the day of launch and it still looks like new.

I had the flaking issue on the kickstand too.. I just scraped all the coating off with the round part of a paper clip. Now it's not a problem anymore and I think it looks better this way. Also the Google logo does not come off with the coating it's etched into the metal. So simple solution to this problem...
What's up with this flaking nonsense? My kickstand looks fine :|
It is poly-silica combo it will scratch. If you don't like screen protectors then I guess your gonna have scratches. Keep in mind if you never turn it on it will never break.

Use the Ultra Crystal here http://www.sgpstore.com/cell-phone/...-screen-protector-steinheil-ultra-series.html and you'll never know it's on unless you look too closely.
Never used a screen protector with my Dinc and never had a scratch. Used the Steinheil for years with my BlackBerrys. After reading about the issues folks were having with their Tbolt screens scratching, I put this protector on a month or so ago, and don't even notice it. I don't use a case.
I never use a case because I always holster my TB. But after wiping my phone off nightly I do see scratches. I'm upset with this. Thanks for link for ultra crystal
how deep are the scrathes? i baby my phones, like BABY since i have OCD, so i have yet to get my first scratch.
+1 on the polycarb suspicion. My screen picked up a scratch somehwere, even though I baby it. I attempted to polish it out with a fine cut polish. While it did lighten, I can see very subtle evidence of my polishing. There appears to be a difference in the texture of the glass where I polished, almost as if I removed a coating.
I have since installed SGP Ultra Crystal which I really like. Never needed protector with my BB Storm..two years of heavy torture and not a single minute scratch. Go figure. I also have the kickstand flaking. I've really treated this TBolt like a piece of delicate china and its falling apart lol.
My screen and kickstand both look like **** now. I went from launch of D1 until TB launch with my D1 in the SAME POCKETS at the SAME JOB, and it had no scratches... The only blemish on it was the Gold paint on the Camera button came off...
Gorilla glass... PFFT... more like Gorilla ass!!!!
Awesome, thanks for the endorsement!
Just received Niilken 9H+ tempered glass screen protector from www.cbay.co.nz
Handful of cleaning agents included with the protector.
1. Wet cleaning cloth
2. Dry cleaning cloth
3. Adhesive film to remove dust
4. Wiping cloth
5. Extra stickers to hold the protector without directly touching
Unfortunately, the one I received did not fully adhere to the screen. There were gaps all around the protector border, and refused to set properly even after firmly pressing it down.
It did not affect s-pen functionality nor front camera, but it could have been better.
Overall, otherwise looks good and does its job as one of the first tempered glass protectors for note 4.

Wrong forum thread. The reason the glass does not fit properly is because of the 2.5D screen shape at the edges.

He's quite right, on both counts.
The phone's screen curves almost imperceptibly before it gets to the "obvious" curve at the edge of the screen. Most (all current?) tempered glass protectors are perfectly flat on the backside - this doesn't adhere properly at the edges because the phone's screen curves away.
The threads in the accessories section have covered this in quite some detail. Some manufacturers are busy trying to design a glass protector that both adheres properly and is easy to apply.

You are right, I actually misread that as 2.5D for screen protector. I am aware of the screen curvature starting within the viewing screen.
Thank you though.

iloome is currently the only company who is making a Note 4 tempered glass screen protector that is designed to fit OVER the 2.5D curved edges,
All other pieces will either stop short of the curve or will have issues adhering.
Why bother, it's gorilla glass 3 right? Pretty scratch resistant as it is. I never used anything on my LG G3 and its scratch free. Or my G Pro 2. Never had an issue. The GG3 glass is good enough I think to use without anything and it looks so much better as a result.

"Pretty scratch resistant" isn't "completely immune to scratches". The point being that if you cover your phone with a protector no matter what happens (short of a drop/stanley knife) you're quite literally covered. Having a decent screen protector, glass or not, along with a case means you can throw your phone into a pocket with a bunch of keys with little regard to how your phone will fare.
I'd much rather have to replace a £5-15 protector than realise at some point that there's a scratch on the actual glass on my screen. You can't go back from that - you can replace protectors easily. People have different usage profiles, just because your 3 phones are scratch free, doesn't mean that others won't want to protect theirs.

I always thought the same, but afraid to try it.... anybody else not use any protection and not get scratches?
Your right I have friends that are tradesmen, and I wouldn't go without a screen protector if I was them. I wouldn't go with a high even phone either.
But in my case my G3 / Note 4 is in my pocket and just my phone alone. Maybe that's why. I don't put my phone inside with coins or keys. That's asking for trouble

One of the reviewers Note 4s screen got scratched during use after a few days(can't remember which site it way). I also remember seeing a video where Gorilla Glass gets microscopic scratches without a protector and these scratches make the whole structure weaker and more prone to shatter when dropped.
Hello, as I assume most people have noticed, Huawei includes just as sony a screen protector, the question is is it really necessary ? Mate 7 is having gorilla glass 3, but even though it has gorilla glass 3 I have noticed the actual ability to stand drops to the ground is extremely different. It seem that these phones which have the whole front covered in glass just like Mate 7 are a lot more likely to crash, and more sensitive, I did experience this with my Lg G2 lately, samsung devices are better in this regard. I have seen non drop tests yet but because that the metall frame around it is very thin , I think it is more likely that when you drop the phone it will hit the glass.
The biggest irritation with the included protector I have noticed is that finger prints gets stuck very easily on the device, which make it look unclean very fast and you have to clean it often. One other thing is how does the screen protector affect image quality, have any one take it of so they can tell us if the difference is big or small ?
I am waiting for reports, how durable the glass is, I noticed for instance that LG G2 which I had before did get scratches on the glass VERY easily, which made me wonder if really had gorilla glass or not, while with my Old Galaxy note scratches was never a problem...
I will probably sell my device in mid 2015 waiting for the summer/autumn models or even spring.. I do not want ot destroy the second hand value by having scratches on the screen... but there is really no reports yet about how durable the phone is..
I never put a screen protector on gorilla glass. It will become dirty looking soon. Furthermore screen protector doesn't protect your screen from breaking, if it falls down. I had no scratches on my sgs2 after using for 3 years.

After reading some user manage to bend the phone I am now more worried about bending the phone then break the glass.
I have not decide yet what to do, I have decided atleast that I have to remove the original screen protector, it attach fingerprints way too easy..a real magnet for finger prints.
Regarding buying a new screen protector I am sceptical.. I have heard good things about panzerglass ? (from denmark)
I am just worried how it will affect image quality and feel/response of the digitizer.

Is there any protector which is scratchless and also anti fingerprints?

Doesn't exist such thing man ..
First you have to realise why you making fingerprints and why scratches are made.. You fingers are CONSTANTLY wet bcos skin is obviously breathing.. secondly you will make scratch in metal easily .. so glass is very easy to scratch .. sapphire glass has diamond layer .. that means diamont is very robust, strong , but brittle.. when you drop it it cracks IF it's thin ..
If you want screen protector and not to see fingerprints , there is solution BUT screen won't be clear but matt .. here

Ive noticed something odd with my mate 7, I have purchased 4 different tempered glass screen protectors and every single one has not properly attached itself on the botton left hand corner. This leads me to believe that the phone screen isnt completely flat. I thonk its possible the phone has bent ever so slightly which makes applying a rigid glass protector impossible. Anyone else had similar?

Mine looks "straight" but you never know it might be hard to see if it has been bent very slightly...
Obviouisly this with bending phones has become a bigger problem I guess in the last 2 years since the phones are getting bigger... that made me think of th LG G Flex, which in this context seem very superior and impressive, since it was impossible to make it change the curve, even if you sit on it..should be possible to do the same techonolgy to make it be straight instead of bent ?
Just an update on this...I noticed this morning when the ceiling strip light was reflecting on my screen that it is actually rippled at the top (around speaker) and bottom left
I presume this is a manufacturing defect as I didnt think you could bend gorillas glass?
Think I may contact the seller. Can anyone else confirm their screen is warped?
My screen is completely flat and the Nilkin tempered glass protector fits perfect, without a single bubble. But i've tried two others, too, believe me, the protector you've bought is a bad one. You find a link in my post on pg 1.
I have now removed the original plastic film screen protector.. it looks better without it for sure..
I have not decided yet if I should buy a glass protector yet..
I wonder have any one done the deep reserach, I hear many recommendations but it is hard to decide if I do not know if the person have done proper research of the the best on the market right now..

It's a ceramic 9H scracth resistant, for cars :silly:
My ideia was, what if I used it to give a "bath" to my Nex? Do you think the finger. reader and touch would still work? If not, do you I think it would protect the phone if used only on the back with a hard glass on front?
That way I could stop using the dammn cases...

My first thought is that glass shatters and ceramic cracks and chips anyway. It may help with scratches but as soon as you have a major drop it's gone. I'll take a case over anything else for the shock absorption.

Yes but I have no problem with it cracking if it protects the phone. It's like the tempered glass, it cracks easily than the screen, but I don't mind changing it once in a while if my screen is protected.
My question is if it would protect the glass back, and also if it would work on the front glass with all the underdisplay sensors

My opinion is it won't protect against anything other than scratches. The glass shatters due to shock and that's what a case minimizes. I don't know if any of the screen sensors would work though.

gorilla glass is an extremely shatter/scratch resistant glass.... I've had htc e8, redmi 5+ fell from at least 1m, they were still good, for my xiaomi phones i usually use the included case for added protection.... you can also use flip cases which will protect the whole phone... there are very nice flip/wallet cases for pocox3...
anyway...here's a picture of my screen after 4-5 months of usage without any screen protector.. no scratches yet, ignore the dust... your experience may vary xD
Anyone else using phone without protection glass, is it smooth without it ?
Factory protection is plastic, if I remember correctly. It gives pretty bad feel. Uncovered screen is smooth and nice to touch.
I just use the ringke fusionx camo case, no tempered glass. Tempered glass is kind of gimmicky, I never would use a cheapo $2 to $5 screen protection. As I paid for gorilla glass 6 and also love it's clarity and feel which no cheap tempered glass can provide me. Anyways, gorilla glass is quite tough and I use my phone carefully like a gentleman! I even use the ringke camp case because I like its look, and also it is military grade certified. Moreover, we use our phone for 2-5years only, after that is just a sandwich! So, why not use it in its true glory!
is up to personal preference to get protector or not
i use hydrogel protector, i have a bulky casing already so yea...
Thanks for the input, I removed my tempered glass now and it looks and feels better. Another question is how do you guys clean your screen? Do you guys use alcohol/water?
Never use alcohol to clean phone lcd screens, it can damage oleophobic coating.
And yes i agree the factory screen protector that comes with this phone is utter trash, remove it ASAP. Phone feels much better without it, both in terms of display quality and just general touch feel. If this is really Gorilla Glass then you shouldn't worry too much about scratching it. (i wouldn't trust Xiaomi on anything though lol)

Dude, I am glad you are not a comedian. Please keep replies like these to yourself. You are making my breakfast go in reverse.
No wonder forum etiquette went to **** in here...

Thank god it doesn't make your semen go in reverse.
And it does yours? Good for you!
Now, let's get bact to the topic at hand, or you feel too childish to let this one go?
Also, to be on track... yes, every phone should have a tempered glass protection. Why? Well you can scratch any type of glass, be it with keys, a knife or any other piece of one's EDC carry stuff. I'd rather tempered glass gets scratched, instead of phone screen. Common sense, really. Using something that costs 2$ to protect something costing near 300$...
the question is absurd: Of course every mobile that is in use needs a display protection ...
I dont use one (and yes i removed the factory protection aswell) for over a year now and there isnt a one scratch on a screen. And mind you i use it mostly for road bike navigation outdoors - public roads, woods, mud and so on it's not just laying on a desk. You have top notch Gorilla Glass protection and it works, why replace it with cheap poor quality $2 piece of plastic with poor feel which also distorts the screen colors and possibly touch inputs?
But whatever floats your boat.
For me, the only advantage of a screen protector is that I can replace it within a few minutes once the oleophobic coating is gone. I find it disgusting to constantly have a greasy film on the glass. I use book cases with every phone, so scratching the display can actually be almost ruled out
Same here: flip case with screen protector.... i don´t use cheap quality rather the opposite and - thats most interesting for me - mat protection without refections... positive side effect: if you want to sell the device later, it has no scratches if you had been careful For me it would be horrible if there was a scratch on the screen...
