Daily Driver? - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

So I just recently got the Galaxy S8+ and the phone is great, but I keep coming back to my Mate 9. Graphics processor is way better and it seems snappier and quicker. I keep trying to find reasons to make the S8 my daily driver but I keep going back to the Mate 9. Anyone think I'm crazy? Lol

I think your crazy for buying a Samdung(that's what we call them here) phone, overpriced and bloatware. SmartPhones have gotten to the point where we don't need to upgrade if it's fast enough where you are not waiting.
I had the same issue with the Xiaomi Mi5s Plus, tried it for a week but ultimately came back to the mate 9, it just felt better and software is better.

Oneplus 6 now, Or wait for 6T ?

Hey Guys,
so the oneplus 6 is out and it seems like a real powerhouse and everybody seems to love it.
My question is, do you guys think there will be radical changes with the oneplus 6T ? I'd love to see a bigger battery or something worth waiting for.
As it is right now, Im debating whether to get the OP6 now or wait for the OP6T.
Opinions?
Thanks guys!
If you want or need a phone now, then buy it. Otherwise you'll wait forever, because the next releases will always be a step ahead the current ones.
I think you should send a DM to Carl Pei, He should be able to give you an answer.

Yeah, I came from an OP1 so it didn't make much sense waiting any longer. If you have an OP5 or 5T though...I probably wouldn't bother.
oneplus 6t may bring an ip rating withbit and also maybe a bigger battery but nothing more than 3500mah
if these 2 things make a lot of difference for you then go for 6t otherwise 6 is a great phone

I currently have a Verizon LG G4 lol.
It still works but I'm just trying to determine the overall consensus as to what people would expect from the 6T.

There is always something better coming up.
You could be asking the same question in 6 months time with OP6t and OP7.
If you need one now, get the one that best suit your needs NOW
Please continue waiting, the current issues with call functionality is pissing me off by the day. camera is mediocre thats why they didnt go for DXoMark rating this time. You can buy Samsung S8 at this price and with 1 year older hardware that still is better option than Oneplus 6
Perhaps you should return your OP6 and stop whining and get S8?
Get 6T then or wait for 7?
Switched from a Nexus 5X, worth it. Would have waited a bit more for 6T, but nah.
I had the same internal debate.
I was fairly upset with Carl's approach on the notch and my thinking was that the 6t might ditch it. One the other hand the S9+ seemed appealing.
In the end I went for the OP6 because of the open policy towards tinkering and rooting, etc + project treble.
Coming from OP3, I can say it's less of an improvement than I expected but still a good phone. With the option to turn off the notch I even forget it's there for days on end.
The battery is pretty good - now I have 44% after 22 hrs of use (2.5 hrs SoT) so I would not worry about it.
Still running my Nexus 6 with Pure Nexus so looking forward to my first 1+. As far as anything Samsung, not going to happen as they are so locked down.
My take on this is 2 fold. If you wait, then you're 6 more months into the life of the SD845 SoC and in just 3 or 4 months later the newer SD850 is the next thing. So this way if you buy the OP6, you will have the top end chip for almost a year, if that matters to you. You wont be buying almost outdated tech wishing you just waited for the OP7
The other thing is I had a OP5 and selling it last week when I did I was able to get the most out of it and put it towards the OP6 and make it less expensive. If I waited for the OP6T I would have lost more of value off the phone.
Point is, if you want to update then UPGRADE, don't wait cause when the 6T will come out, the OP7 will just replace it in 5 or 6 months and you''ll just wait for forever and never update... crap or get off the pot man! Don't be chic about it make a choice!
The Phone is great, smooth, snappy, VERY good camera better the the GS9+, Pixel 2XL and iPhone X in certain things and barely the same or worse in the rest. Great screen (the notch I've gotten used to and rarely see unless on the home screen) and the WiFI and Network reception and speeds are amazing. the battery life is just about on par with my OP5 I had. Very happy with the OP6 over my OP5

Buy 6T dude.
Get an OP6 now and then sell the OP6 when the OP7 comes out and then get a OP7.
Wait always wait...
The NEXT phone is always better, and the one after that is even better, and so on, and so on.....
They are all just crumbs in the bread of life....
If you need or want a phone, get one, but yes the next one will be better....

I had a cracked OP3 and didn't hesitate on buying the OP6. I haven't run into any problems with it yet, camera is probably the best on any phone I've owned, definitely better than the OP3 because it wouldn't focus so it was just a big blur lol. If you're coming from G4 then I would think about it since that phone is a little older, but keep in mind you will have to wait for like 5 months or whatever. If I was you I would buy it

From a now-reluctant Samsung Note fan to OP7 converts

I'm sitting on a fence I've been scooting on for the past 2 phone upgrades. Always felt like "OK, this is the time I jump off the Samsung ship" but have never done so. I currently have a Note 9 and in my head, the natural choice would be a Note 10+. That had been my thinking until Sprint released the OP7 Pro 5G. I know all the specs and all the differences between both on paper. I guess maybe I'm trying to get someone to convince me one way or another. I don't think I've seen a screen better than the ones on Samsung flagships and I'm afraid I'd be trading down if I went OP7. I know about the 90hz screen but since I've never seen it on a phone, I could live without it since I wouldn't know what I'm missing out on. At the same time, my s-pen use has dropped dramatically since I first used on on the Note 4 and honestly, I never use it unless I'm cropping a screenshot, which is rare. I live in Dallas. So I'd have access to Sprints 5G, as rudimentary as it is now. Hence the fence sitting. Basically, I'm looking for someone to slap the ish out of me and help me choose -_-

First off, I've read multiple reviews stating that the screen on the 7 Pro is as close to a screen on a Samsung phone as you're gonna get. The 90Hz is pretty badass. Especially when you can have a 60hz and a 90hz screen next to each other, the difference is night and day. Second, Samsung is garbage, trust me, I've had every Galaxy since the S7 Edge (except Notes) up to the S10. The software experience is sublime compared to Samsung's. Granted, OneUI has definitely come a long way from TouchWiz, but it's still laggy, heavy, and bogs down after awhile IMO. The cameras are far from Samsungs quality, but it's a phone camera, and to be honest, I prefer OnePlus's camera over Samsung's because it's not oversaturaded and punchy (OP is more natural). The pop-up camera is awesome, just because of the added screen real estate. The phone screams with an AOSP based ROM, hell, even on OOS. The performance is amazing. I had the S10, and it could barely play a full match of Fortnite without running out of RAM. I'm always using 3.8 out of 7.8gb of RAM at all times even with heavy gaming such as Call of Duty: Mobile, Shadowgun Legends, Asphalt 9, PUBG Mobile, etc. To top it all off, can't go wrong with the Alert Slider. Good luck with the 5G version though, to me, it's worth getting the 7 Pro over the 5G version, especially if you wanna get into rooting/modding. So many people complain about it not having ROM/development support. Plus, 5G is just getting started, I would personally give it a few years before it's something to even write home about. LTE does me fine enough since I have 100mbps at home and I'm not on my phone much at work. If you need to know anything else, let me know.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is not a device you get cause of it's bells & whistles. You'd want to get it cause it gets the job done many $900+ phones already do. I believe The OS is the main feature for OnePlus phones. It may not have stuff stuff OneUI does but OxygenOS is very, very fast. OnePlus makes sure their OS is consistently fast
The 90hz display is out of this world. It is HARD to go back to a 60hz display. Using my girlfriends Galaxy S10+ looks jittery when scrolling & I just don't like it, haha.
Updates, this is where OnePlus shines. 3 years of guaranteed Android version updates. Not quarterly security updates. We're talking full on Android versions. The OnePlus 3/3T is on Android Pie & it came out in 2016! Same year the Galaxy S7 came out & it's stuck on Oreo (officially) forever.
The only thing you'll be missing is Wireless charging & a headphone jack. The camera does a pretty good job, but it could be better.
So, if you're the type of person that wants fast updates, a fluid, consistent, stock-ish Android experience, & 3 years of guaranteed updates. This phone is for you.
Depends if you want no corner cuts, a much better camera, battery knife, and the extra features like reverse wireless charging which is now good at 10 watts vs 5 and etc.
Keep in mind the note 10 has a much brughter and higher quality OLED panel as they do have the best displays in the world 90HZ aside.
In terms of 90HZ, it's still not supported in 99% of apps and 99% of games, and will automatically turn itself off even during scrolling in your browser like chrome, a lot of users don't even notice. It depends if you like it that much, and wether that's a gamble you're looking to take.
The op 7 pro has had a ton of software issues, might be due to R&D but I'm not sure, I think most are fixed by now though.

You're most definitely missing that higher quality camera, and what about expandable storage? No official IP rating? The phone is water resistant I'm aware, but I just don't think it'd fair well on the dust rating[emoji2371]

First of all, I appreciate the answers, fellas. I've been in the Samsung ecosystem for so long, its become a crutch when thinking of buying something else. That said, this worries me if accurate. Maybe I've been spoiled by Samsung and all their bells and whistles, but I really was looking forward to the 90hz screen. Though ever since Samsung began locking down all their phones, quick updates like on the OP7 are really appealing. I almost feel like I'll end up flipping a coin

This isnt true, i feel his comment is from someone not owning the device.
I use latest OOS 9.5.11 with twrp, magisk, forced 90hz script and renovate ice magisk mod.
And i can tell you, in every app i use its on 90hz, some games Are locked at 30fps but its not that many but thats not OPs fault, its the games fault. Many games that run 30fps Will run at 60+ when you have the forced 90hz command and the phone feels blazing fast in Chrome, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, using the phone in general!
I had the S9+ before i changed to OP 7 Pro, and this is the best phone ive ever had! And ive had alot og phones! P30 Pro, iPhone X, S9+ and more, and none og these can Even touch the op7 pro in software and speed.
This is my 2cents, if im changing phones again itll be either a pixel 5xl or OP 8 Pro ?

Get the OP7. OOS is so much better than the Samsung interface. And if there is something about the OOS interface you don't like, mod it!
You have so much more choice and so much more freedom if you go for the OP7 Pro.

Exactly this. Loyal Samsung users have this weird... Lack of a better word, hatred for OnePlus & I never understood it.
I own the Note 9 and the OP7 Pro and the Note is sitting on my desk. yes, the Note 9 has a better, brighter screen in the daylight and has AOD and a 'slightly' better camera IMO. I never used my S pen so thats useless feature to me. never used Samsung Pay either. I like the direction One UI is going though. But using the latest OP7 Pro open Beta based on Android 10, I absolutely love the phone. the screen to me just seems better with everything. I'm not talking the 90hz, I'm talking looking at it. Somethign about the OP screen just is sexier to me. Plus the screen is much smoother, not bloated, and better experience to me. And the battery life destroys the Note hands down. Like, seriously.
Just go to your local Sprint or T-Mobile store when you have time, and play with the device. Go through the software, play a few games on it, turn the refresh rate to 60 then 90 a few times, use the cameras, etc. Please don't buy the device just based off our opinions, buy it because of what you think of it. You have no idea how many times I've had buyers remorse due to the hype of a new phone (S10 as a perfect example). Good thing I have Jump on Demand which let's me upgrade 12 times a year or every 30 days, which helps a lot when I pull the trigger too fast. Plus the OnePlus 7 Pro has liquid cooling as well, I don't know if that means anything to you, but to me, that's pretty damn cool seeing how only the S10+ had it and the S10 didn't. Plus $700 VS $900, the only place I'm seeing a $200 difference is very slight screen quality, and lack of camera quality, but then again that's because OnePlus seems to take more natural looking pictures. What made me jump from the S10 to the 7 Pro was because the 7 Pro had basically everything the S10 did, but it was cheaper, and you could mod it.
90hz screen is cool but not a deal breaker going back to different devices. Used my op7 pro for a few weeks and had to use note 9 and lg v30 while finding a dual SIM version.
This is the first OnePlus device I'm going to keep longer than a month. Could never get use to the 1080p display coming from good quality qhd devices. And no this display doesn't come close to Samsung's flagships but it gets the job done.
Pro and a con is that it's stock Android. It's boring but clean and consistently fast. currently playing with Android 10. Nice not waiting forever on the oem's to update.
I came from Samsung's since s2. 1st op I owned is the 7 pro and it's badass. Serving a kernel or rom on this is tremendously easier vs s9 note 9/10 and oc is easier Samsung I had to do a lot to get oc on the S7 s9 .
Been there (Samsung) done that. I have not looked back after getting the OnePlus 7 Pro! Cheers
I've been a Samsung user since the S5. My last Samsung was the S8+. All have been the Exynos variant because it used to beat Snapdragon performance-wise. Then Snapdragon started to beat Exynos but has a locked bootloader. That's what made me switch to OnePlus 7 Pro. I love that it's so easy to unlock bootloader and root. Like it's MY phone and I can do with it whatever I want. I also have the forced 90hz script like people mention here and I haven't seen any apps revert it back to 60hz aside from some games. I get a lot of compliments on the screen and the color (Nebula blue). OOS is fast. The battery life is amazing for me. I'm very happy with the switch. I also really like the stock screen protector it comes with. Still in great shape and it feels great.

All depends what you want in a phone if speed and development is your thing then yes it's a winner if it's more camera then there's better out there P30 pro for example , ticks many boxes but camera could be improved if it's possible ,

For me it's the best overall phone in 2019! Good luck
I have had mine since it was released, and it just keeps getting better. Some will say the camera is weak, and maybe that was true back in April, but I think it takes great shots now. I am running Android 10 beta, and it is rock solid. If you are looking for a phone for overall usage, this is it. Best bang for the buck. I would highly recommend this phone to anyone.
The camera is garbage. You get used to it and that's why it seems to get better but it's garbage nonetheless. Me and my girlfriend keep taking pictures on her galaxy s8 because wherever we take them on my 7 Pro they turn up horrible.
I wouldn't call the camera garbage at all. I have a Galaxy S10E as well and much prefer the OP7 over it including the camera. Takes great pictures, even of my kids which is always difficult. Remember these are phones. The cameras have come a long long way.
If you can get the gs10+ for same price or promo from carrier I'd go that route. I like my OP7 pro but truly the gs10+ is better phone for most.
Ip rating if you must,
Wireless charging,
Better camera,
SD if needed,
Overall better support directly through carrier vs dealing with OP sometimes awful customer service and Warranty nightmares. Again I like my 7 pro. And won't be changing it for a while but truly the gs10+ is a better phone for 70% of people.
There is an issue with the battery when u play games like PUBG. It takes 3:30 to 4 hrs playing only. Everything else is perfect. At least for me
If money is no issue grab a s10 or even note 10 on the dark webs. They are getting cheap fast.......
Can't go wrong with any flagship. Screen is average if coming from Samsung line. I'm in love the storage speed honestly.
Currently scratching my itch for stock Android but it won't last too long. I prefer baked in features rather I use them or not.
Battery life is average.
If comparing to zte, xiaomi or any of the other mid priced/high spec cheap phones, OnePlus wins.

Question is so vague, as to make it impossible to answer meaningfully. Worth buying? Worth it to who, you? We don't know anything about you, so how would we know? Such as what device you currently have, what types of things you like to use your phone for, what your budget is, etc.
Most folks on this forum section own the 7 Pro. So they will likely tell you it was worth it. Folks do not tend to frequent a particular device forum, unless they own and like that phone.
The 7 Pro is crazy smooth and fast, with flagship specs in most regards, but with a much lower price than the big brands (Samsung, Apple, etc.). The mostly clean Android interface (without too much manufacturer "skinning") is nice as well. The camera may not be the absolute best. But more than sufficient in most cases, in my opinion. No waterproof rating. No wireless charging, either. But whether you miss those features or not, depends on your needs. And most of those details, you could have easily read on any number of internet reviews of the device (and maybe you already have).
Just as important for many of us here, is that the device has good XDA community support.

bye bye Huawei

Got the OnePlus 8 Pro and coming from this turd of a device it is a refreshing change.
The smoothness and higher refresh rate is staggeringly superior.
Wish that Huawei would have left the bootloader alone, the p10 Pro was going places.
Now it's pretty much dead, shame.
Hopefully see some of you in the OnePlus 8 Pro forum, highly recommend the phone, is flawless.
I switched from MI 9t to P20 pro and I really regret it

Ohhh I feel you, that's like me swapping out my OnePlus 5 for the Pro. I got the phone and tried why I got it (camera) then after the novelty of that wore off and development on XDA died, I realised that it is a dog turd.
So much potential, literally killed with several bad decisions.
I wouldn't change my P20 Pro for the world (well perhaps for the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro). Its easily the best phone I've ever owned. I honestly cannot fault it for anything other than the lack of development.

How is battery life of OP8 Pro compared with the P20 Pro? You get almost same SOT?
And for the camera quality?

Splintered variants
Poor GPU
Poor CPU
Poor overall performance
Bloated software
Awful customer service
Woeful development
Disgusting software updates.
Do I need to go on?
Sorry mate, each to their own but honestly, I dropped the ball when I got a Huawei, against my better judgement, I'm much happier now that I have the performance I need and the freedom that android deserves.

Well it's only day one but so far it's been pretty good.
I managed to get 14 hours 45 minutes on my OnePlus 5, usually averaged around 10 hours.
My average on the P20 Pro was a little less at about 7-9 hours
Soon as I get a ballpark I'll respond.
So far it's looking good, I think a minimum of 7, better in mind I've got 120hz on constantly.
Camera is phenomenal and that's compared to the P20 Pro. It's a huge leap forward, 4k 60fps is brilliant, the OIS stability is vastly improved and the super macro I love. I'm yet to find a fault with the phone besides one thing which I'm getting used to and that's the waterfall screen, I sometimes touch it by accident but I think that's habit of having edges on my Huawei.
Free wireless bullets 2 came with the phone and a case in the box which will do for now.
12GB RAM and 256GB storage, just a crazy phone mate.

Weird thing about me with huawei, I usually get 1-2 phones each year, this time is the first time I've stuck it out with one phone for two years.
So yea I was really say the end of my tether.

My wife still has hers and she loves it. Much simpler needs though.
She has had an envious look at my OnePlus though and is now I'm guessing feeling like hers is in need of a refresh
Root already achieved btw and twrp. Not complete but it's very early. I think it'll be hugely popular, going to try to get some of my old Devs to jump in.
People started reporting the green screen problem in low brightness with OP8 Pro. Did you experience anything like this?

Nope, also heard something similar on every single thread is every single phone one ever owned. You need to be extremely unlucky for this to happen to you. On any of the aforementioned phones. (list in my sig)

I'm sorry, but I don't see all of this. My phone runs just fine. I don't find the software bloated. I've never had to use customer service. I don't see any perceptible lack of performance. Sure, software updates are slow to arrive, but this is the same with the vast majority of manufacturers. And how many of them still support devices over 2 years old?
As I previously said, the lack of development, due mainly to Huawei's intransigence over bootloader unlocking, is the only real issue I have with it.

Lol I didn't want to do this (get pulled into a silly back and forth) especially seeing as what I said is correct.
Bloat:
The ROM download is 4.7GB in size? In what way is that not bloated dude? What the hell Is it?
Customer service:
OnePlus, called to RMA, phone sent and back in 3 days, for free, I asked Huawei for MY information, all correspondence, GDPR , this is my information, that was seven months ago, I'm still waiting, they won't send me anything.
Performance?:
Oh dear where to start, install lawn chair launcher, add the Google feed (on the left) it lags when opening it, a OnePlus 5 doesn't lag when you do that? A OnePlus 3, 2 maybe even a 1!!
Dolphin emulator lags, unplayable in most instances, psp, modern combat, normal games like cod, or just 3D games in general have sub standard performance compared to any of the phones out at the same time as the Pro, unless it's a Huawei / honor / Samsung (EU) device, the problem is mainly the awful Mali but the CPU isn't great either, plus it heats up a lot too.
Software updates:
OnePlus - one variation
Huawei - I can even answer this, how many different variants and regions are there for Huawei? L09 L29 c432 c783 A100 ?? I have no idea, it's just a stupid avoidable mess, how long have people been waiting for Android 10? How many people managed to get the beta? Lol it's shocking, OHHH and yes some of the updates relock the damn bootloader, some of the services (funky) completely broke the ability to unlock the bootloader? It's a disgusting, avoidable sh*tshow.
Let me tell you something about software updates, a phone with a healthy after market development community will not need updates after two years, they will continue to get tweaked, optimized, newer modded ROMs released, look at the HD2, I think it's still being developed now. Huawei will never have that, ever, or is a dead platform on XDA.
Lastly :
I'm not bashing your here, I know people who bought this device did so in good faith, I'm one of them, and bitterness is rife as well as a bias for your device but you can't stand by what you said pal, it's just BS, get any Snapdragon device and you'll see what I mean. My only hope for the Huawei community is that they never buy another Huawei ever again, Huawei teamed up with XDA and became popular, created a following and then just pulled the rug out from everyone's feet. I hope they go down the route HTC did, the former surely deserve it.

I couldn't afford the 8 Pro so actually went for a reduced 7T. Saved me a few hundred and still way better than the 20 Pro experience.

Honestly, if the 8 didn't come to carriers in the UK I was thinking of doing the same mate. Totally get your choice.
Lot of similarities and you've got that high refresh rate too.
With you on the sh*t show that has been Huawei. Remember the days when you could actually unlock the bootloader and we clung on to some hope that there'd be light at the end of the tunnel but they quickly stopped that. I had to send my back for a repair after it hard bricked and they sent it back bootloader locked
I couldn't warrant the extra £200 for the OP8 Pro so got the standard OP8. I'm seeing that Pro forum is already more active with some ROM's that I hope will quickly filter down to its little brother and the hardware is not much different.
So yeah, 2 years of the P20 done & dusted, phone sold, only regret I have is putting up with it for so long.

Should I....

....go and get the Note 20 Ultra now? Should I wait for the next Note? The Huawei Mate 20 X isn't cutting it. I have never had a straight out of the factory stock phone. I always had either a rooted or jaibroken phone.
Get it

If your current phone is going to last another year I would wait at least for a good deal.
I have a 10+ and though I'm eyeballing the 20U, Google and Samsung haven't given me enough incentive to upgrade.
I'm running Pie and Q isn't an upgrade with its scope storage crap.
5 G still isn't fully implemented.
Both models lack the latest bluetooth chipsets and codecs.
In fact the bt audio on the 20U is the same as the 10+.
Sammy dropped the ball twice on it's most expensive flagship phones ever.
So... will Android 12 and 13 be better or has Android gone MS insane too?
Maybe with the next generation of Sammy's they will be more motivated and less fractured with their offerings.
As for me the 20U has many improvements over the 10+ including faster RAM but there been a fair number complaints with the display.
The 10+ is a very capable phone and still fast by any standard plus I like Pie much more than Q.
Very little bang for the buck for me to upgrade to the 20U.
For you it be great fun but you may miss out on a future model that you'd like more.
Tough call, but waiting costs nothing if you current phone isn't costing you profitability and is reliable.

Mate 20X was such a great phone for its time, one of the best and its still a pretty great phone. The Note 2o Ultra has been the only phone that has helped me forget my love for the 20X...you wont be disappointed unless you really loved the flat display of the 20X but I do think the 20 Ultra is now the sexiest phone on the market. I am eyeing the Fold 2 though.
My philosophy is if one always waited for what's new out around the corner one wouldn't end up getting anything at all !
Enjoy the journey.
Wait until next year. Or better still the following.
