Why aren't the S8 and S8+ forums merged on XDA? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I find it incredibly annoying and cumbersome to go through 2 different forums to view issues/features/apps of the S8 and S8+ since 99% of the posts can pertain to either phone.
I think the Combined S8 Forums should look like this:
S8/S8+ Questions and Answers
S8/S8+ Guides, News, and Discussions
S8/S8+ Themes, Apps, and Mods
S8/S8+ Accessories
Exynos S8 Roms, Kernels, and Development
Exynos S8+ Roms, Kernels, and Development
VZW S8/S8+ Roms, Kernels, and Development
ATT S8/S8+ Roms, Kernels, and Development
Tmo S8/S8+ Roms, Kernels, and Development
Sprint S8/S8+ Roms, Kernels, and Development
You are cutting THIRTY forums down to TEN.
I have the S8 and if I didn't go through the S8+ forums, I would've missed on some great tips and vice versa. For example, I wouldn't have found out about Adhell or Disconnect Pro if I was just browsing the S8+ forums, since it was posted on the S8 forum. Another example is my magnetic wireless charging mod for the S7 edge, which works on both the S7 edge or S7 and any other android phone with wireless charging. If I don't post it in the regular s7 forum, people who don't have the s7 edge and do not browse the s7 edge forum will likely miss out on this. If I choose to remake this guide for the S8, should I just post it in the S8 forums or also the S8+ forums?
Does everything read through both forums? Instead of going through 4 combined forums (Q&A, General, Apps, Accessories), you have to read through 8. That's really a waste of time and why should app devs or accessory creators manage TWO threads where the same question is asked over and over when it was likely asked/answered in the other thread?
If something is phone specific, people usually mention it in the title anyways.

That's like saying merge pixel and pixel XL forum, they r still different phones imo, can you imagine a battery life thread mixed with both s8 sd s8 exynos s8+ sd s8+ exynos ?

Too late now...you should have asked the Admin back in February....

Funny you should say that, I DID ask them in March when both forums were still pretty empty, and they refused.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=71656329#post71656329
Ever since then, all I have seen is duplicate threads in both forums, people getting irritated by having to trawl through 2 sets of forums when 95% of the threads apply to BOTH devices and people getting confused and posting in the wrong forum.....I saw it coming, tried to tell them, and they wouldn't listen to me.

You already have battery life threads with people mixing the devices, pretty much all of em. I've already had this argument with people before. If it was ONE forum and TWO threads, people would be much more likely to post in the correct one since they will be right there. The way it is now people will be posting in the wrong one through a combination of confusion over what forum they are currently in, and not being bothered to navigate to the other forum and search for the battery thread in that one.
The hardware is basically identical except for battery size, almost every thread is going to apply to both devices, so instead of having 90% of the threads duplicated in 2 forums, splitting the knowledge in half and forcing people to have to trawl through 2 sets of forums, they could have one set of forums and maybe there will be a few device specific threads in them for things like battery life. You can have a sub forum for each device for firmwares, but all the Q&A and general guides and discussion and accessories forums should be a single set for both devices.

Thats the most stupid thing ive heard. Why would you want that. They are not the same phone.
Its like me saying on a jeep forum to merge the 3.6 section with the 5.7 and 6.2. Yes its the same shell but differe t vehicle. I dont wanna here about tbe 5.7 or 3.6 if im looking for info on tbe 6.2... catch my drift!

Are you really that thick? it's the exact opposite of that. its a different shell with the exact same insides! (same engine, same stereo, same pedals, same seats, same satnav, same steering wheel, just a slightly bigger fuel tank in one of them). Jesus there's some dimwits on here.

Except that even in a single forum, most major topics already get spread across a half dozen redundant threads. And within each thread, once it exceeds a single page, most of the posts just repeat what was said earlier, including misinformation that was previously corrected. So the number of redundant forums doesn't really matter much.

I agree, Android Central recognized this a month or two ago and merged them. It is much better.
It is easy to point out examples where this would not make sense, but you must ignore the incredible inconvenience of navigating back and forth to even present the argument. The reality is that the s8 and + are remarkably similar.
Based on this logic, we should also have separate forums for snapdragon and exynos devices.

well put. Im surprised the poll is pretty even. Do people want them separated just because they think their S8 variant is better than the other?
They are both literally the same, sans display, battery, and now UFS storage (for certain variants). Yes, the exynos version has root and will likely get better rom support, but every other forum (Q&A, Apps, Accessories, General, etc) pertain to both phones. Itd even be better if the admins made the forums separate for the Exynos and the Snapdragon variants since theres more of a difference there than s8 vs s8+. Between the name calling and thought process behind this, I really question a bunch of you. I didnt have a Pixel but the regular and XL forums should've been merged also.
Also, who cares about battery threads. They are mostly useless, and its not difficult to state what s8 you have.

ssgunner20 said:

So maybe samsung should just get rid of the two names and call em s8 regardless of screen sizes, battery...etc.
Think about it, if you take a moment to actually think, what your asking is pointless because look at the other sub-sections this forum has based on carriers. What makes you think people from verizon want to see info from at&t or Tmo? I think every memeber has a right to choose to view what section or sub-sections they choose to view rather than having it forced down their throats.

No, carrier variants and Rom/development forums should still keep their respective forums. I've updated the OP with what I would suggest for forum merging. I'm saying that the Q&A, Guides/news/discussion, Themes/apps/mods, and accessories (yes even this, if theres a case made for the s8+, there likely is one for the S8 as well) forums should be merged as they all basically pertain to either phone. Your car analogy doesn't work here since cars are extremely more complicated when the engine, trim level, packages are different when it comes to modding, accessories, questions, etc. The s8 and s8+ are basically the same sans the screen size and battery size; it is A LOT more simpler and clear cut than cars when it comes to mods, apps, accessories, etc. The Pixel and Pixel XL should've had those specific forums merged as well.
Nothing is forced down your throat, what you and others are missing is shared knowledge as another user pointed out. I wouldn't have found out about Adhell or Disconnect Pro if I was just browsing the S8+ forums, since it was posted on the S8 forum. Another example is my magnetic wireless charging mod for the S7 edge, which works on both the S7 edge or S7 and any other android phone with wireless charging. Once you learn what efficiency and simplicity is, it will make sense. What has been done in the past is not necessary the best way of doing it. Learn from the mistakes and fix it. It amazes me that people would rather separate forums for each different sized phones model (s8+/s8, s7edge/s7, pixel/pixel XL). One is not better than the other, we should join forces and share knowledge, tips, questions, etc.

There is no need to call out names, it? Kindly respect each other other and their opinions.
Secondly, this is not a place to make your request of the centralized forum. You can take it here [All XDA Members] Requests to Moderators and Admins or New device forum requests.
I wouldn't comment on the behalf of admin. But I am pretty sure the admins have a pretty good reason to create separate forums. And they would be glad to address your concern.
Good luck!

unified forum

Has anyone else thought there should be just one forum for all the Galaxy S phones? considering they are almost identical it would make sense as long as each phone had a sub forum... Just a unified general forum would be great.
This has been posted before. This would make sense but although the phones are similar they are not the same. They have differences within them that make mods/roms/developing for them different. Since programs need to be modified for each phone it makes sense to split them up imho.
Yes. Especially with hacks. They all tend to affect each of the phones differently. Some work on the Captivate, some more and different ones work on Vibrant, and even more function with the stock i9000's.
Think they have it good the way they have it already.
I have a Vibrant and just came over to this forum to see if I could pick up any good information I haven't seen in the Vibrant forum.
But, I do believe we should keep the forums seperate.

[READ] This is the SGH-T959V(SGS4G) Not The Vibrant, or the Galaxy S 4

Hello Android Developers | ROM Flashers | Hackers | Modifiers | "I want my phone to look cool" People
First of all, I'd like to point out a few interesting things about this device.
-This is an Android powered phone that is officially supported to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread
-The is the Galaxy S 4G. It is part of the Original Galaxy S (1st Generation) series and was once offered by ]"THREE" carriers. Mainly T-Mobile, secondly Wind Mobile, and most infrequently, Telus. The unique think about this phone is it was the first 4G Galaxy S Phone on T-Mobile.
-The model numbers are SGH-T959V(For T-Mobile), SGH-T959W(For Wind Mobile), and SGH-T959P(For Telus).
-A vast majority of support on this forum goes to the SGH-T959V for T-Mobile as it is the most common. There are a few T959W users on this forum who also have a few important threads, as well as if you are a T959W user, it is smart to note that yes, you can generally flash T959V roms, yet, you should "NOT" flash T959V Bootloaders and other such partitions such as the Boot, SBL, and Param sections as this MAY result in a permanent brick.
-There are no current T959P specific posts, and it is unknown whether there are any Telus users here. It is currently unknown but probably consistent that these users may be able to flash T959V roms.
OST OR ASK QUESTION
NOW THE MAIN POINT
First, If you haven't read the above section. GO BACK AND READ IT
MAIN MESSAGE
To all noobs, the T-Mobile (WInd or Telus) Galaxy S 4G is NOT internally similar to its predecessor, the T-Mobile Galaxy S Vibrant which lacks 4G and Gingerbread support. If you flash a Galaxy S Vibrant ROM, your phone may (and probably will) die, and will likely be void from warranty if you still have it! You should only flash ROMS available in THiS forum. All other Galaxy S variants including Galaxy S I9000, and other Galaxy S SGH model ROMS, Galaxy Y ROMS, Galaxy S II ROMS, Galaxy S III ROMS, Galaxy Note I ROMS, Galaxy Note II Roms, Galaxy Note 10.1 ROMS, Galaxy Tab ROMS, Galaxy Player ROMS, and any other Android Phone ROM will also kill the phone.
The label, Galaxy S doesn't mean Galaxy S "4G". There is a "HUGE" difference.
THERE ARE NOW AN INCOMING FLOOD OF GALAXY S "4" USERS.... THIS IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DEVICE... PLEASE POST IN THE FORUM THAT CORRESPONDS TO THE MODEL NUMBER BEHIND YOUR BATTERY
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS WARNING IS TO STOP GALAXY S 4G AND GALAXY S VIBRANT USERS FROM FLASHING ROMS THAT ARE NOT FROM THEIR EXACT PHONE'S FORUM AS WELL AS TO STOP AN INCOMING FLOOD OF GALAXY S 4 USERS TO POST QUESTIONS IN HERE

Seriously, sticky this beast. Its almost every day I see a thread with some poor sap who didn't do ANY research, has a bricked phone because he was trying to flash a vibrant ROM XD
While part of me says that if they can't bother to do the research before messing with a very expencive device then they deserve to be bricked with a voided warranty but then the other part says that this is good info so it is now stuck.
i do have to agree that this is good info, but isn't this referring to #3 in the 10 commandments thread? just wondering.

Good point. From some of the threads I've been reading, it doesn't sound like some people even pay attention to the stickies as it is.
Maybe the better question: Does having yet another sticky stop people from posting stupid stuff? Probably not.
I'm proud to be a part of this forum and community, and I'm tired of having to filter through a bunch of crap to find the needle(useful post) in the haystack(thread).
I hope that we, as a community, can band together to report abusive users (by clicking the alert triangle in the title bar of the abusive user's comment) and to help nurture the newbies to feel safe to ask questions so they don't follow bad advise and bootloop or worse... brick.
I hope that this being sticky catches someone's eye so they don't flash the wrong roms, if they are on other phones.
For the record I came to this site after flashing a vibrant rom through(gasp) ROM Manager. You know the story. Only option close to this phone was VIBRANT(this was back in feb and still the same). Some better googling led me here. Fixed my problem without so much as a post. Other people think and act different than I do. They will ask for help. They will be noobs. It's your choice whether or not to help. If you choose not to help than let that be it.
Oh bye the way NO ONE reads stickies

I thanked, because it seems to be the biggest problem with this site.
No one reads the stickies.
Should the site maybe implement a lightbox of some sort that pops up to remind users of the rules and reading the stickies and ops?
EDIT: It would be annoying, but if it worked, it would become less annoying to *not* have to scroll through 100-200 page threads of newbs fighting over stupid crap posted in the sticky and op...

It's not rocket surgery or brain science. The simple fact is people want an easy way to do things. That's why they(myself inluded) are here. My homework is my own. So is my frustration. I ask not for sympathy but for pentance. I am so fuc?ing tired of off the cuff remarks from users of this site that claim to "know it all" but slam some poor ****er asking for help. How do you build a comminity on top of that? Search for sure. Notice the hottest topic right now is this one?
Zeledel
Do not expect people to be you. I sure as hell don't
I don't but I do expect them to do what I did when started, the same thing that everyone is expected to do. And that is to spend a good amount of time reading. When I started I knew nothing of modding and only had basic computer skills. So I joined and spent weeks reading up on what I was doing before I even attempted to software unlock my device. If you asked a question here without doing your research you were flamed left and right as it was and still is expected that people do the research before posting. Mainly sense modding your phone breaks your warranty and if you bricked it there was no way back and no returning to stock to return it.
As for the off the cuff remarks, I am sorry it has come to this. You can ask any one of my team mates. I am the first to spend hours upon hours helping people. Hell I have even spent 4 hours on an international call to help a user that has bricked his phone. In the end it comes down to if you do the research and then after all the work it is still acting up then people are more opted to help.

Agreed.
For anyone that has been keeping up. Please don't think that I am trying to say that I am like some tech guru. Lol far from it. I only meant to show what can happen when you put some love, effort, common since, strong searchfu toss in some grey hairs into your device. Never know the guy that joins XDA tomorrow may become the next CM.
If you believe you can or if you believe you can't either way you are right.
pft.
Sometimes when your having a bad day, keeping your fingers off the keyboard makes things better.
I had to re-read hechoen 3 times until I got it.
agreed. Also, people should not flash to their phone until they really know what they are doing. When I first rooted my G1, I read for 2 months before trying. Also, I ended up frying my rom and being stuck i bootloader for a day, but I never posted a single thread anywhere(I wasn't a member). So before people say "HELP, am I bricked?" they should try "EVERYTHING" to solve their own problems. The senior members aren't the phone company warranty plans.
google does a good job of leading other galaxy variants to different forum. When i first googled this phone google led me to the i9000 forum, and from reviews and comparisons on other sites they say this phone is very similar to the vibrant so its easy to get confused. Its bad enough samsung has like 10 phones with the galaxy name on it too. I think this thread should be stickied on general and Q and A also, its very easy to be misled here.

So, why is the xda-dev wiki leading noobs to believe otherwise?
Clicking on that link (which is supposedly a list of all the Galaxy S models), we see the Galaxy S 4G nestled in amongst all the generic Galaxy S models. Shouldn't there be a separate section here for the 4G just as there is for a Galaxy S II and a Galaxy Tablet?
It's one thing to make this post a Sticky (which may or may not be found via searching), and quite another to deliberately classify the Galaxy S 4G as a Galaxy S on the Wiki (which is much more prominent than a Sticky)!
p.s.
I had specifically asked a moderator to create a new group for the Galaxy S 4G over 6 months ago...

I actually beg to differ. The galaxy s 4g is a 'galaxy s' phone based on the s5pc1xx (specifically the s5pc110 in PoP with the onenand-flex and dram, just like the epic4g and fascinate) processor (hummingbird chipset). The sgs2 is based on the exynos chipset.
The tablet IS in a class of it's own.
I don't understand your post.

No Seperation between Wifi and 3G units?

so i plan on getting my gf the samsung galaxy tab 2 7" model
but there is 5 pages of post here, and looks like there is a mix of just wifi units and wifi/3g units so why is there no thread separation, like you get in alot of other sections, hell even some sections have separation of carrier if the radios for the carries are different
it just a little hard to get through all of them, especially when i'm just looking for the wifi models and then i look at a something someone made and its not for the model i'm getting for her
is there any plans on making a separation for the wifi only and the wifi/3g units or no?
I agree, I think they should be separated also. Although the 3113 CAN use 3100 roms, and I believe there are other variations of compatibility. It can still be cumbersome scrolling through incompatible roms.

Doubt any plans to separate. One request for you tho, please don't post question threads in the dev forum. Post question threads in the questions forum. Thx.

Call me old fashioned but I tend to use the forum search engine for navigation and simple question finding. If you had done that , then you would work out that most ROMS are getting merged.Such as 3110/3113 are exactly the same thing and devs are making builds universal now ( see CM10 for an example) In fact you can use any 31xx on any 31xx device (But don't expect a Phone ROM to work on a Wifi only ROM as its hardware not software that makes it ring)
Its ironic that you post about too many threads in the development forum , then post in it asking a question lol. To be honest we are hardly flush with ROMs to choose from in this forum ( No disrespect to any dev intended, just stating a fact)
You are old fashioned

Questions should be posted in Q&A forums, not Development forums.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?a=81
See rule #15
Thread moved.
yes i am aware this should of been posted in the Q&A section and slap my hands for it
but i felt after 5 pages of threads some house keeping should of went in place and some sort of separation should of went in
but i also know this kind of question gets ignored in the Q&A section till everyone starts complaining about it
and by that point the house keeping for it gets, well undesirable to be fixed
beyond this time i have behaved and put my questions in the Q&A section unless it was part of the original thread it was in
yes i did use the search engine and that is how i found my first few relevant post, but after the first few that is when i go to the begin of the tree
and then see if there is separation so i'm not going through each search result of not need to look at info
and with what you stating with cross compatible roms, that just means you would have a section for none cross for each in general and the section for cross compatible roms as you point out that its the hardware series in general that makes it possible
but now the major question remains on when or if i will be able to get ahold of one, as most of the places i turn to for my electronics are out of stock of the units, but time will tell

for those buying the S6

What made you choose this phone over the better 901F?
options
1 - What is the 901F never heard of it? (blame XDA for not adding section and media for not reporting it)
2 - I only buy the marketed phones.
3 - I am a developer and want to make money from donations so only buy the marketed phones.

I'm just curious... by what metric precisely is it that you're claiming the 901F is "better?"
what's the point of this thread?
I don't find the 901F 'better'.
The point is OP trying to convince himself his phone is better than the s6. Most likely he bought it not too long ago and is frustrated he can't get the s6, hence trying to convince people here that his phone is super awesome and that it deserves a subforum because it's too great to belong to the s5 sub.
PS : XDA people usually don't buy based only on marketing. But nice try.

Not so much frustrated about the S6 but rather lack of recognition by XDA.
But after the announcement of the S6 I am laughing, now I am glad I got this whilst it was the flagship of EE, as in my view the S6 is definitely an inferior phone.
The reason it needs a sub forum is that none of the S5 roms/kernels work on it, thats a clear indicator it shouldnt be lumped in the same section.
By the way you took the time to reply without answering the question? Its as if you think the answer is obvious or something.

If I may ask, why did you make this post? If you want a subforum for your S5, you should post in the S5 forums or contact a moderator. I really don't think this subjective "poll" to verify your phone's superiority was necessary...
If you want to talk about s5, please, go to the s5 forum
If that phone is so great then just keep it bud.
That's the thing

I made the post as I am curious what the mindset is of xda user's what makes them decide what phone to buy. As some phones get real popular, and others people barely buy.

Not sure if you've noticed this but XDA is a site for developers. We add devices based on developer interest, likely development (in upcoming flagships) or actual development (in lesser known devices).
That should answer your question.
Thread closed as the only point of this thread seemed to be to have a good moan (though that's what we British are known for so I guess I shouldn't be surprised)

Should the Pixel and Pixel XL forms combine?

I posted a poll on the Pixel XL forum. Please vote if you have an opinion on this.
Right now on XDA we have separate forums for the Pixel and Pixel XL. For the first time (that I can think of) we have two identical Android phones in two sizes.I don't know how popular iPhones forums are on XDA but they don't have separate forums for the regular and plus versions. There isn't iPhone forums on XDA.
It seems like both Pixel and Pixel XL forms already have topics covering both devices. What are your thoughts on combining forums?
In my opinion, it depends on if the ROM, kernel and theme development will differ between the two phones. In theory, it would seem that the development for each would be identical because the internals are identical. However, I'm not sure how the screen size/resolution will play into that.
Plus, accessories such as cases and screen protectors for the Pixel vs the Pixel XL are also going to be different. This might make the "Accessories" section more confusing if the two forums were combined.
Yes, Combine
I'd say, combine everything but the Accessories.
PSA, the Galaxy Tab Pro series has a combined xda forum, for the 8", 10", and 12" sizes

I'll bring this up with the forum moderators for this forum and see what they think. My personal view is, the Pixel XL and Pixel phones should get a lot of traffic, based on the previous phones, I think 2 forums are warranted. We could get confusion when people are asking questions in the Q&A section for example regarding which phone they ware wanting support for etc. Also we would need to find out if the ROM's have different basis as well, if they did then it would almost certainly need two forums.

Agree with @Stephen ...but there are a few caveats that we need to look at first and unfortunately that can't be done until some development begins. First, are there any nuances in the architecture that differentiate the X from the XL? On the front face, only the display and battery are different, but as we all know that doesn't mean the rest is identical. Maybe there is something buried deep in the kernel or a line in one of the props that may seem miniscule, but throws everything out of wack.
Something that we can possibly look at in the future would be combination, but with some restructure. What I mean here is that we can have the Guides/News, Accessories, Themes/Apps/Mods and QA sections combined, but separate the X and XL Development sections from one another. That will make sure that if you are just asking a general question or need a guide, you can look in the combined section. But if you are looking for a specific ROM build, you will have to go into your specific arena.
Ultimately, we need to get devices in hand and a better analysis of the system dumps that we currently have. Those will tell the tale.
Oh and someone said something about the Search Bar. That made my day. I think that I have to log off now since my keyboard is soaked with my tears of laughter and I don't want to short it out and have to explain why to IT.

If there is a simple way for devs to make all work compatible for both - Combine
I would like to cast another vote to have a combined subforum as well. Yes, there are some differences between the devices, but the development that has been happening so far (dePixel8, SuperSU and TWRP, to name a few examples) have either worked for both devices or the developers have published separate builds for each device. I like the idea of a "Unified" sections, much like the Samsung Galaxy S4 subforum that exists. It can be at the OP/developer's discretion to create a release in the unified section, or just for one specific device.
@Stephen, now that some time has passed and development is very similar for both devices, is it possible to combine the forums into something like the S4 has? There has been a lot of double posting between the two separate devices, in both general questions as well as development.
Well, I want to know what this is referencing.

Yea I definitely think they should be combined. They should each have their own accessories forum obv but everything else should be joined. For the development forums there should be a requirement that when you post a ROM/Mod/whatever that you start the title with either
"Pixel"
"Pixel XL"
"BOTH"
To me it's a no brainier. Would be so much easier using this format and joining the forums
I have already combined them in my head. I treat them all the same. So yea, one would be awesome.
Please combine! Im guessing we're missing some great threads and info, and they are as well.

I can see the validity of both sides but we are definitely missing some very good information that is present on the XL forums that hold true for the Pixel. For instance, this thread by a forum moderator https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-root-flash-pixel-xl-t3507886 which to me is a redo of the Heisenberg 5x and 6P threads that were so valuable for the past year. But perhaps they should ask the devs as they are the ones who will have to deal with differentiating the devices, or perhaps making it easier for them if it holds for both devices. Personally, I don't believe there is enough traffic in either to warrant separate forums, but that is my opinion only and I'm sure the mods have their own thoughts.
So who do we actually go to in order to see if this is something they would even consider
