Very odd update issue (nothing like this in search) - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

So I've got a really odd issue. Background: My Pixel suffers from the random freezes that plague this forum.
I saw a notification for the May security update OTA, clicked install and then my phone froze.
I held Power+Volume Down which is the only way out of the freeze.
Since then there has been no OTA showing and I wondered why so I checked settings, it thinks it's installed (Security patch level 5 May 2017, Build: N2G470) but it didn't do any of the updates or reboots or anything.
Is it possible that it somehow updated that quickly? The phone is working

Marshmallow problems with spontaneous launching of Google Now, taking over device.

My phone has been misbehaving since it upgraded the OS to Marshmallow. It was primarily occurring with the Google Now app and it would take over the phone and flash up and off the screen and whilst this was going on, the phone is busy vibrating, the screen became unresponsive and generally I couldn't do anything with it during these episodes. I stopped it sending to the screen and then it was the Google app that kept flashing up, starting with a round circle coming from the app drawer icon. It has got worse over the last few days to the point that it might take me ten minutes before I could get access to the caller to make a call and even trying to shut down the device was near impossible because the confirmation box never stayed on the screen long enough to answer the question and then it didn't come back. Yesterday, after many tries to restart, it finally restarted in safe mode. If it was related to an app that I downloaded, it should have stopped then but it didn't. When I was able to get into settings, I then went to apps and then disabled google app as this was the one starting up and flashing the screen non stop. I was then asked if I wanted to replace it with a factory version which I did but I also left it disabled. The problem has continued but not as ferociously with the screen becoming unresponsive at times while the buzzing from the vibrate still occurring. I have looked up various forums but haven't found any that have similar problems described. I checked the screen overlay settings and they are enabled and that seems to be the main problem with marshmallow. I'm looking for some advice but realise that this might be too basic for this forum? When you updated to Nougat, what method did you use to update? Did you update via OTA? We're you rooted when you did it?
Have you tried booting to recovery and factory resetting and wiping cache then rebooting?

It was an update that appeared on my notifications and I thought it was a small bug fix update and didn't realize that it would replace the entire OS. I just allowed the update and then realized what had happened. I think it is Marshmallow that it updated to but originally the app drawer was paginated and accessed by side swipes whereas the system now is a long page of apps moved up and down. I don't know if it was rooted and I assume that that means it wasn't.
I was trying to avoid a factory reset but I did wipe the cache and rebooting. When google apps is disabled, the interruptions are less often and not for as long but it still went into a complete meltdown of a screen appearing and disappearing at such a rate that nothing can be done with it. It won't show a video because of the interruptions.

Unfortunately, I think you're gonna have to factory reset in stock recovery because there's obviously a conflict with something you already had on the device and it isn't playing nice with something that was in the update.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I have resigned myself to that although it does not seem to be anything that I downloaded to the phone as it occurred in safe mode too. I was just hoping that there was a fix out there but obviously it is not a widespread occurrence.

It could have been something in system that got changed during the update but the data from before the change is still there and conflicting with whatever changes were made. Some kind of saved system data that can only be wiped by factory reset or reflashing.

I did a factory reset, lost a lot of photos that had started being saved on the phone and not the sdcard after the upgrade to Marshmallow. Have had to accept that but unfortunately the bizarre behavior did not stop and it continues on and off, sometimes so bad that I cannot dial a number on it and other times it happens but I can get in between the action and dial or send a text etc. I have gradually been stopping things like notifications from google apps and traffic reports from google maps (this may have had a good effect) and anything that might be doing constant checks. It seems to have quietened down over the last day or so and I even got to play a game on it but the next option is to send it away to an engineer. I just thought that I would let you know the outcome of the factory reset.

Update QF3 available for sprint 7/5/17

new update available. says "security , new device features " , its the android june security patch and possibly a new feature
If your using the no root hotspot it still works through update!!
It installs weird too after rebooting it restarts then the screen will black out and say "installing applications"
then it will say software is custom until the update notification at the top stops. even though it already popped up a toast that said successfully upgraded yet that still has to fill up (in the notification) then it all goes to normal seems smoother than ever
I am applying it right now, will follow up if I run across any issues.

Thanks. So there is more than just security patch in it at that size.
All I know is the last update(not this one) broke my phone, My system app crashed randomly, vibration would continue to vibrate after calls were answered, very slow response and frequent random resets. Notifications would either not appear or not disappear. One time I lost all my home screen apps. The problems were so severe I decided to upgrade to the S8.
After this update my phone runs like new.... too bad I already decided to buy the new S8.... although my 'excuse' for needing it apparently has been fixed by this update, Now I just want the S8.

July 2017 update issue

Like many others on this forum, I'm having random restart issues, ever since the June update. The issue appears to occur when automatic screen timeout occurs. I can workaround the issue by keeping the screen on.
I just downloaded the July update. However, the device crashes when trying to install. It appears to go into "screen timeout" during installation, and then freezes, the same issue as before.
After removing battery, etc. I can eventually boot up again. But the update is not installed. It tells me to visit a Samsung Experience Center.
Anyone know what to expect at the Experience Center, or how to workaround?
Went to the only Experience Center in town, an hour's drive.
The guy seemed to be clueless, and was about to go thru the same download and install procedure I have done several times. Since the download was going to take 30-40 minutes, past his quitting time, he told me to come back another day. He said I should try the SmartSwitch app - been there, done that, with no results.
NOT IMPRESSED!

Screen freezes on rotation than reboots after a while

Today I've got september security update and phone has been working fine for most of the day and then suddenly it started freezing on rotation. Either when it goes fullscreen or I rotate it, the screen freezes, can't turn off screen and either I hard restart or it does it itself after a minute.
I haven't updated or installed anything new besides the security update recently.
I wiped cache and when in safe mode it doesn't freeze, so I assume it's an app problem but is there any way to narrow down to which one it can be? In safe mode most are disabled and when I turn phone on all should be off and it still happens so I'm not sure how to diagnose this besides randomly uninstalling app by app.

I have the same problem. I have locked rotation to prevent freeze. hope someone can explain it
Did anyone find a fix for this? Just started happening to my Galaxy s8+ today also after an "1 January 2020" security update.

Temporary fix: when you need full screen, toggle on 'disable HW overlays' in developer options.
This will be resetted each reboot, so you need to enable it when you need manually.

Suddenly apps are crashing / closing and frequent reboots (ONEPLUS A6003_22_190911)

Hi!
Stock Rom, no root. Build: A6003_22_190911
I'm not sure what the root cause is. For seemingly no reason, my device started rebooting randomly (once every few hours, sometimes minutes in between) when starting apps or interacting with them. To remedy the problem I wiped the cache partition, but the reboots are still as frequent and in addition, apps randomly close/crash.
The reboots seem to be soft reboots or sth, since I don't have to enter the SIM PIN again after they happen.
I'm not quite sure, but maybe it was the most recent update? I did it a few days ago. I waited quite some time before updating.
Can you help me find a solution to this issue?
Cheers,
reijin
Are you root? What rom you using? Are yoy using edxposed?
It's the stock Rom without any modifications. I'm not root.
I've been having the same issue as you since a couple days ago when I got the phone. I don't think it's the update itself, because I was having issues even setting up the phone before I even got to update it
Interesting. I think I will try to acquire a debug log, but as of now the crashes have become less and also less reproducible. It's kind of a mistery to me what's going on.
Well, it's been ok for a while, but I just had 3 reboots in 7 minutes. No idea how I can acquire a log if it's so inconsistent. Is there a last error log or sth that I can try to access?
Do you have the google assistant power button shortcut enabled?
I was experiencing this exact behavior until I disabled that option, and now I get multiple days without a crash/reboot.
