Android Tablet Discussion

I was thinking that a Generic Android Tablet Discussion thread would be a good idea. No matter the brand , maker size etc. Talk about them here.
Im debating between the Archos 101 and waiting to see if the Moto tab is good.

I have been keeping a keen eye out for the variety of higher end tablets and here is what I have sort of come up with so far:

I know they are poppping out of the woodwork now. My biggest thing is that the majority are really expensive. Like the new Toshiba announced today is $540. THat is why Either the Cruz or Archos will match all my criteria. But the nice thing is that there seems to be a ton of different options.

I've been disappointed with the IFA ones as almost all of them have 3G which means here, onerous data contracts or ridiculous prices w/o.
Archos underwent feature regression(e.g. no GPS), and has some whacked prices for the 70 & 101. The rest seem kind of useless to me too small and at least the smallest two don't have any way of expanding storage which makes them kind of useless as anything other than a portable music player.
The Viewsonic is the Olivepad one? Didn't seem to be all that great.
Toshiba Folio MIGHT have been nice, but that Tegra will likely make it expensive.
...just too many hawking 3G and not enough that have useful extras like higher res cameras, GPS, mics, and maybe bluetooth... i.e. I'm just meh'ed by IFA offerings... Witstech A81-E is still looking good and they just got another new fw release 8/31...

Which matches up with the samsung tab, but the British price I found had it at over 600 British pounds, which converts to over 1000 US dollars.

Damn that is expensive.
Im mainly looking for a ereader, web surfer, watch some videos on trips, and check my gapps when on wifi.

Check out the stream tv elocity pad. No 3g, but no gps ether. the reason why everyone puts on 3g is because it's the only way to get google apps on it, until google changes their requirements for google apps.

I think a 2Ghz CPU, as of right now, is over powered for android. I have a Gentouch78 tablet that runs at 600MHz and it seems to run OK. My 1GHz nexus one has had no issues, and I have it multi tasking several apps at once sometimes. It will get really hot, especially when I toss the car charger on it while its doing all that, but never seen it slow down to unresponsiveness. As for the HDD space. I dont use mine much for multi media, so 50gb would be overdoing it for me. Just the ability to have an SD card slot would be enough for me, that right there is 32 gb.
Now dealing with the android OS itself, this is where things are starting to get wierd. You have 2.2, which is really a phone OS, you have 3.0 which is really a tablet OS, and so the current samsung tablet is supposed to be 2.2 and will get 3.0, but now this 3.5 is where it gets confusing. Some of the stuff I have been reading is stating that 3.5 is going to be an entirely different OS completly, or at least have an entirely different usage beyond that of a tablet or cell phone. And that you will have to buy an entirely new piece of hardware to use it because samsung already said their current tablet wont get 3.5 when it comes out, but i twill get 3.0. This is making me think that 3.5 may be the google chrome OS, which from what I am hearing I am not a total fan of. So basically, the idea as I understand it, is that the hardware will just be the input/output device and all the applications will be stored on teh cloud as well as the work being done will be done on the cloud. This is all nice and dandy until either 1) everyone gets on all at once and bogs down the system or 2) the cloud or network goes down and the device is worthless. Thats why I like android right now. If you have no data connection you can still do work. Now some things on android that do run off the cloud, like the GPS, if you need to reroute and you loose the data connection, since all the work is done on the back end you cant get anywhere until the data connection comes back.
Since Android is a full fledge Linux OS I think it can do whatever you need it to do, you just need to port the apps over. So i think it can replace a laptop, but there will always be certain things that make a laptop easier to use that are unrelated to the android OS, like a real keyboard. With phones, for instance, I still feel more comfortable texting on a physical keyboard on my blackberry then I do on the virtual keyboard on my nexus one. Now can I develope a web page, photoshop some images and toss them on the web page, with android? If they ported the apps over then sure why not, the physical keyboard will just make it easier. But as soon as you start talking windows 7 you are changing the entire hardware requirements (ARM CPU versus an x86 CPU) which will allow you to run your favorite web development software and photo editing software, and now your 50gb of disk space will be all chewed up with the OS and applications but no room for media, and with the new hardware requirements the price goes up (not like the samsung tab isnt expensive either) but then the bottom line is its still awkward to use because of the lack of a physical keyboard.
Now I am just using web development/photo editing as an example, simplier tasks, like email and web surfing, will require less and are easily done on the android OS. But the bottom line is to use the right tool for the right job, outline your requirements and find a solution that best fits your needs. I believe that android will be a decent laptop replacement if all your doing with your laptop is surfing the web and sending email but if your trying to do less casual stuff, like photo editing and web development, then android right now is obviously not enough, but in the future it might be. It goes back to the age old question, does hardware push the software industry, or does software push the hardware industry?

maybe..but for me I have no use for GPS on a tablet....but that is just me. Just like all new technologies price points will get better with maturity of product.

Hmmm.... looks like they took a screenshot of an android VM running on ubuntu and photoshopped it into their device. If they don't have any pictures of the tablet in action, I'd be really dubious...

Finally I ordered this one, so will post some review when it arrives.

So I tested tablet I ordered few weeks ago and realized that this is the same device as Advent Vega. I test quadrant benchmark and got 2200 points without any customization of rom.
Screen is nice and response is fast. I can recommend this one.

Galaxy Tab Plus vs Nexus 7

I know there are many things about the Tab Plus that make it a superior piece of hardware, but the Nexus 7 is one of the few 7" devices that even comes close to it in specs and performance.
The one great thing is that it will get the latest OS updates and that will make it a more fun device to use. It hasn't even shipped yet, but has its own forum and someone has already figured out how to root the device . . . The most frustrating thing about Samsung is its silence and sluggishness regarding updating our beloved device. Not to mention the wifi driver issue.
I don't plan on getting rid of my Tab Plus but I have a Nexus 7 on pre order and can't wait to try some Jelly Bean.

Well it has the superior processor and better software support, downside would be the missing microSD slot, limited internal storage and lack of 3g. So on the one hand you are dependent on the cloud but you dont get mobile data capabilities. Sure Tegra 3 is nice but i still think the tab+ is at the very least more mobile.
Oh yeah and the n7 is supposed to have a bit of a better screen.
Since it has only wifi and limited storage it's designed to be used at home mostly which conflicts with the concept of such a small screen size.

OK, so I was really curious about this too. I made a little spreadsheet to compare the GT+wifi to the 16gb N7. It's attached. There's several small differences (dimensions, materials, asthetics, etc.) that were either a matter of taste of too insignificant to call "different." BTW- if I've missed something let me know and I'll update.

Thanks for pulling all this together!

Honestly if the nexus 7 had a microsd card slot id probably rid my gt+ but im not sure if im willing to give up storage for a faster cpu. ... I think it kind of is a downgrade, and cloud come on why would you want your files on another device and not your own? I think its a cool device and may work for you but all n all i think the gt+ is for the win in my book

I just sold my Gtab+ on ebay today and pre-ordered two Nexus 7.
I'm just tired of Samsung taking forever to roll out major updates, namely ICS. I've had working ICS leaks on my E4GT for several months now, which I am enjoying and all, however my P6210 has seen no such love. Its not mobile/3g so the carrier argument is null. What bothers me further is that Samsung put out the tab 2, which is extremely similar yet its got ICS.
I decided to sell it now, while i still can and forego the microSD card slot. apart from that, i am gaining a far superior tab that has much greater function (to me) than the tab plus.
Despite the Lack of external storage I do not see how a Gtab plus is in any way better than the Nexus 7. Even if it has 3G, pages are slow to load and browsers FC more often than i'd like to admit. I find myself (when using my phone) waiting and hopping onto wifi more often than waiting for 3G.
Based on Specs alone, my wants and needs would be satisfied by the Nexus 7. As great as external storage would be for movies during flights and trips, i can still make plenty of use of 16GB of on board storage for my half way around the world flights.

Just some quick thoughts on my future with my GT7+...not commenting on anyone else's decision to switch or not....
Not sure if I'll sell my GT7+ or repurpose it, but I too have ordered an N7. Lack of ICS (my 10 android tab has it so I do know what I'm missing- unfortunately I don't have time these days to root/hack as much as I'd like to get an unofficial ICS on the GT7) is a big issue for me so getting to leapfrog it for JellyB is a dream. Day to day performance compared to iOS has always been so disappointing and it looks like JB will have that smooth, buttery UX that android has been severely lacking. I can't wait! I know many will disagree with that statement, but fanboi-ism aside, you gotta admit, why does android need two or even four cores running at 1.2-1.7Ghz to run as smoothly as iOS (which only uses a dual 1Ghz cpu or slower)? I'm not a dev or coder so don't know the nuts and bolts of the OS, but as a consumer the slow downs, freezes, stutters, etc is a deal killer.
These days an iPad3 is my main tab (/ducks...lol), but I still think the GT7 size is a portable sweet spot. There are times the iPad just feel to big to bring. Plus, the horsepower of Tegra 3 with that monster GPU (12 cores!) will make the N7 a serious competitor to the iPad for games and multimedia content creation (photo and video in my case)- if we get the proper apps. Another thing the the N7 got me with is a better supported screen rez- I've had app compatibility issues possibly because 1024x768 wasn't properly supported for a honeycomb tablet.
16GB with no expansion might be tough, but support for USB drives will come soon if not available at launch. No HDMI out is also a bummer, though again, I've read MHL support could be added with a firmware update.
Lack of 3G is a non-issue. 3G sucks. Sorry, but come on, in this age of LTE, good WiFi coverage about anywhere and LTE MiFi's, I would never pay extra to have 3G in a device these days. LTE data plans are about the same cost as 3G now and coverage is only getting better (obviously, I'm only talking about the US and have no idea what the situation for LTE is in other parts of the world)
Anyway, I know I'll always have uses for both OS's- well, my work requires I know and use both, but it's gonna be great to have a device that won't sometimes make me feel like a beta tester when I use Android.

If you can't find google or the search button, how did you make it to XDA?

GTab+: MicroSD, HDMI (with dongle), rear camera + LED, haptic feedback.
N7: Better resolution, OS, CPU, easier to hold (grippy case), NFC
I'll be keeping my GTab+ P6210 for now. Besides being a bit slower and lower res, it suits my purposes fine and has all the extras. Hopefully the OS will catch up eventually (at least 4.04 with good custom ROM, don't care for TW that much). Might get an N7 later but not in a huge rush right now.

but want to order the 32 Gig Nexus 7 (they are currently sold out)to have a cream of the crop OS to play with . The only reason I need the Xtra space is for movies so I'll just bring my GPlus when on long trips and the Nexus 7 for short ones. :good:

I use it for cellular purpose and also browsing internet.. its my main gadget now ^^, but eyah, another 7" tab for 200 $ with 1.3 quad tegra.. jelly bean.. quite a good offer for self amusement.. will consider getting that N7 as well.. but GT+ will always be my main, for now..

Anyone now start considering about Huawei Mediapad FHD?

When initially Mediapad FHD was announced, most of us said well it's Huawei. Bad reputation company... But with so many QC issue ASUS is having, I am start thinking ASUS is as good/bad as Huawei (well I actually never tried Huawei so maybe I should not say this..).

There will be attachable keyboard with extended battery option.
The key specification here is CPU/GPU. Despite slower CPU clock speed it has better GPU (at least core # wise). This is like Exynos chip that Samsung has. Simply looking at New Ipad its CPU is mere 1GHz Dual Core, but GPU is where its power is. If you look at Benchmarks Android tablet beats CPU power but GPU power is far inferior. Exynos chip on SIII and Galaxy Note 10.1 comes the closest but yet far away. But considering how stable Galaxy Note 10.1 is (even on ICS), the stability must be coming from the memory (2GB) or GPU or maybe Nand (perhaps combination of all). So if mediapad does it right, it may function better overall than the Infinity, which definitely has some bottle neck somewhere.
I am not saying the MediaPad FHD would for sure be superior, but as Infinity having so many issues, giving a try on MediaPad FHD might not be a bad idea.
*Too bad MediaPad FHD gave up on 2GB memory as originally planned.

#1 is probably big on tech savy people which I guess majority of people on XDA.
#2, again I don't know much importance. Exynos on Galaxy Note 10.1 is 1.4 GHz but essentially equivalent Atuntu score and actually overall more smooth/stable than the Infinity (when infinity is performing at its peak with tweaks, I think it can match but not consistent and definitely not for everyone)
#3, I don't know why Huawei dropped this... It originally had 2GB RAM

Joking aside, the main reason for instability on the infinity are the FHD screen (which the mediapad shares) and the IO issues (which the mediapad does not have).
Also wanted to add the infinity has a 12(+?) core GPU.

I hope fhd is not the issue but it could be... if so, until next generation cpu gpu combo comes, the issue will not be solved.. infinity has 12 gpu cores and note has 16. So gl benchmark of note is the best of all android tablets still behind new iPad.

Not buying cheap chinese knockoff. Almost no Chinese company I knows of has the ability to perform effective QC like the Taiwanese/Japanese/American companies do.
The closest one I can think of is Lenovo and their line of computers are still a long way from the old Thinkpads of yore (the corporations who stopped using thinkpads are a clear indication of that).

Funny considering that all iPhones and iPads are made by a Chinese company.

There's a difference between manufacturing and quality control.

Well Huawei, is still quite unknown, but the latest phones were not that bad.
I just don't understand why they wait so long to release their products. For example the new quad phone was announced for April? and still nothing. Now they have to fight against s3,hox and soon Note 2 and I phone 5,which is pretty hard.
For the pad is the same. Against note 10.1, tf700 and "new", ipad-I don't really so a chance. Well prove me wrong.
Nevertheless I will take a look at it, just to compare.

True. But with its reputation, only way huawei can prove is when compared to more known brand. Otherwise, most would simply dismiss by saying but tf700 is coming soon... I really like fhd so hope either this or tf700 next update is the answer.

A combination of the lack of 3g support on the Infinity & Asus' stupid pricing in the UK means I will be looking at other options.

Actually, after returning my TF700 after a few days (freezing , light bleed, ands creen input Issues), I now think the way to go will be the new Microsoft Surface or some other Windows RT tablet , assuming they can get developers to create bunches of apps like Android and Apple (But I remember that app creation started off slow for both these platforms as well - Do you remember how few Ipda apps there were at the beginning) Hardwarewise it is a gamechanger. If you get a chance, watch the keynote video on it. I don't think QC will be an issue - I think it will be Applelike detail, but with a system that allows expandability via USB and sd, which is what I want, as well as that new keyboard. We are so close to release now that it would be a mistake to jump into another platform without at least seing what is released.

Windows 8 tablet is definitely interesting player. But based on the recent IFA Berlin, I feel like their target audience is slightly different. Here is why.
Windows 8 RT
This is more of direct competition to Android Tablet & iPad. But just as you mentioned, it will likely to take sometime before app market catches up with that of iPad or Android. Both had phone background so though they weren't initially optimized, they had enough application from get go. Whereas, Windows 8 the biggest advantage (could have been) was to use all Windows software poool, which RT does not allow and instead asking programmers to create Metro specific applications. So question is how long will it be? 6 months? 1 year? No RT tablet that is announced thus far have neither FHD screen nor inductive pen capabilities i.e. lacking main selling features of Infinity or Galaxy Note 10.
My guess is by the time the Metro market matures, there will be so many more RT tablet with cheaper prices, and of course better specs. So personally, RT is a pass.
Windows 8 Pro
Samsung Ativ Smart Pro actually have phenomenal spec with FHD, pen support, and support for all windows applications. However, its battery life is mere 5 hours DVD playtime (Infinity claims 9.5 hours and in my real life use I get only 5-6 hours, so who knows what 5 hours really become). The weight is quite heavy.
At this point, I feel like if Samsung really releases P10 Android Tablet, that would be the one but given such recent release of Galaxy Note 10.1, new tablet won't probably come for at least 6 months.
Certainly interesting time for tablet.

I bought the TF101 a long time ago, and after reading about the tf700, I've come to the conclusion that Nvidia Tegra sucks. I still can't watch movies at full frame rates on my TF101. Also the whole I/O problem really annoys me. However, software wise, Asus rules. Fantastic support for the tf101. Also, from what I read Tegra 4 may change things.
I bought a Huawei U8800 about the same time as the TF101. Hardware was pretty good, especially for the price. Software (especially OS optimization and updates) was terrible to say the least.
I'm not sure which tablet I want to buy. If Asus was using a different (read: better) processor than the Tegra 3, there would be no question. But I felt kinda burned on the Tegra 2 and the I/O situation. If the mediapad is significantly cheaper, I may go that route.
Also, I don't really use custom roms and dev stuff, so I don't factor that in. However, from my experience with the U8800, China has a huge dev community, and The XDA developers are aware of it and borrow from and work with them. So you will get some decent dev community support with Huawei, not as much as with Asus though.

Short Version..
1) Resolution is 1920 x 1200 on both: 10 inches is better than 8.3 inches
2) Dedicated HDMI Out: Slimport & MHL Technologies need a power source to work without fail.. HDMI Out does not.
3) 32Gb of Internal Storage On The FHD 10 vs 16Gb on the G Pad 8.3: This plus 64 Gb Micro SD Card support.
4) A True Tablet UI: Icon Dock does not get rotated vertically to the right side of screen in Landscape.
5) Price: The MeMO PAD FHD 10 32Gb Version is at least $20.00 cheaper than the 16Gb (only option) G Pad 8.3..

Long Version..
1A) Even though the MeMO FHD 10 has a lower Lux rating you would be hard pressed to tell unless you are sitting in the middle of a grass field at high noon and the sun is right over your head.. other than that you Can see the screen outdoors..
2A) I've owned the Samsung Tab 3 8.0 & Note 8.0 along with a Nexus-7 2013.. The Samsung's had Samsung's own MHL adapter that I ordered.. it claimed to be able to charge your device while sending a HDMI signal / Picture out to your Big Screen.. That was not the case. The Tablet's still drained with use.. you needed that AC power just to get the unit to work.. if you tried not using AC and just plugging into your Tablet's USB port, the HDMI Out signal from you device to your T.V. was a no go or spotty if you were lucky. Same case for the Slimport Device I order for the Nexus-7 2013.
True HDMI Out Eliminates all of that.
You can now use the AC power to keep your Tablet charged as normal.. Have a dedicated HDMI Signal sending out information.. And in my case, combining that with a Bluetooth Game Controller I now have a Fully Functional Gaming Console.. just as if it were an Xbox or Playstation but now I can get HD games for $7.00 max instead of $59.99 max... all day play on the Big Screen without having to worry about battery drain.
3A) There is no argument here.. 32Gb without tricks is 32Gb without tricks,, with 26Gb ready for ALL downloaded Apps & Media guaranteed to work if you never install an SD Card.. vs 11.6 Gb's Available on the G Pad 8.3.
4A) It may not bother you in the least.. but I personally cannot stand the way Sub-10 inch Tablets rotate the icon dock to a vertical stance on the right side of the screen in Landscape mode.. It looks hideous to me.. Yes, there are way around it by dis-figuring icons or having none.. but why go through that? True Tablet Mode eliminates this nagging issue for me.
5A) The soon to be released ( As of this writing ) Nexus-10 2013 I am sure will be at least $399.00 for 16Gb & $499.00 for 32Gb's of storage.. with NO SD Card slot as we well know.. Sharper Brighter Screen? Yes.. worth $200.00 more for a 32Gb version to "Me" ? Nope.
The LG G Pad 8.3 with it's Snapdragon 600 heart will ( and already does ) get lots of development.. ROM's a plenty! where my Asus MeMO FHD 10 cannot even get a Thread!! ( Joking.. Not Angry at all )
And you know what? I may be getting a little old but... I can live with that!
The Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 is one of the most Lightly Skinned UI's out there.. Coupled with Intel's CloverTrail+ Technology, it's efficient and smooth without Lagg.
I thought long and hard about my decision.. even returning the first 16Gb $279.99 FHD 10 I had.. and just stayed "Empty Handed" for a few days to go over the Pro & Cons without bias..
My Conclusion was.. You cannot get more *Bang For The Buck* than the 32Gb Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 offers.
If you are a Flash-A-Holic ,
Buy a Nexus-7 2013.

Like i've said in the other thread... i agree with you.
And have hope that x86 will see some adoption on the soft dev's part since it is a more "powerful" computer architecture (1 single core can do more calculus per second than a single core Cortex A15... and probably even more than the Cortex A57 cores)
Plus the Z2560 SoC its really a great chip... even with demanding games it never runs hot ... and the battery last a lot more time than the ARM based devices.
The next gen SoC's from Intel (Z3xxx) have the power to put ARM SoC's to shame (in terms of compute "power", and probably power consumption) except for the GPU (i really don't understand why they [Intel] are going to use their crappy GPU arch...)... Its going to be very interesting to see if Intel will gain a momentum in the mobile devices...
I just hope they both keep on the market, because the winner is the consumer (and computer science)... Would love to see some Power arch devices as well and some MIPS...

Yes I did.. When I returned the 16 Gb I decided to step up to a 32 Gb this time around..
Have you tried a 64 Gb card? I have read conflicting reports that it support it... Either way I am cool having over 50 Gb's Minimum of storage onboard is just fine with me... but if it ends up being 26 Gb's available (Internal) + 60 Gb's (SD Card) available.. I won't argue with having over 80Gb's of storage onboard as well.. :good: and you are correct..

Actually i did not tried any sdcard yet .
The internal flash is more than enough for me right now, because i only use it for OS and Apps... I stream all videos and audio from my NAS.
I would give it a try, but i don't have a 64GiB sdcard

Thanks for the response Exnor.. I know.. we have a Ton of Memory available I basically have 32 Gb card I've dragged from device to device that is the culmination of several years of stuff.. 1/2 a dozen Cutting Edge 3D Games 1/2 dozen Movies 90 average apps and I still have over 13 Gb's available internally and 16 Gb's of old stuff on my SD Card... So I'm not hurting for space either but I'm just curious if anyone has confirmed it working or not.. I may buy one if I spot a fair deal and give it a shot myself.. with so many new games in the works and everything now being in High Definition, It will not hurt in the long run to have a much space available as possible.. even though I also have 50 gigs of it free for the next 2 years I just cannot get into "The Cloud" for storage at all... I want my material kept locally..

Word of caution mate, dont buy cheap SDcards... they usually are below standard and have very poor compatibility and data rates. Best OEM so far i've experienced are Sandisk, Transcend and Samsung.
I don't use the "cloud" either. Its stupid to use a service that you need constant ISP service and a fair bandwidth... People will realize this in time (i'm talking of course of mass market products, not professional ones).
I use the Goggle "cloud" just to backup text files(Docs, PDFS etc...)... for that is very very usefull, BUT i have always a redundant copy on several computers or on my Backup HDD's (not networked... never put sensitive stuff on a network).
Changing subject, this week Intel announced that they will start to manufacture ARM based SoC's for other companies (since they have the best semiconductor facilities in the world along side with Samsung and Texas (?)).
No word if Intel will return to produce their own ARM based SoC.. (like in 2000-2003) but its unlikely since they are really pushing the Atom Z3xxx series SoC out there to tablets and low end laptops.
The new Asus phone pad already uses a Z3xxx (4 x86 cores... but a Intel GPU arch :/)... would like to see how they perform.

Not to worry Exnor.. Nothing but Sandisk for years now..
Give Intel until 2020.. they will be a Major Player and possibly the *Leader* in this industry as what is known as the " Laptop / Computers" of 2013 become the Dinosaurs of 2020.. Powerful Tablets will replace these bulky concepts in the next 6 years..

I agree... Intel have made huge progress in power consumption savings. And ARM does not have a processor arch that can rival head-to-head with currently available x86 arch...
But i hope they both stay in the market, because competition is what makes new tech to be produced and better prices for the consumer

Sorry I'm a little bit off topic, but I am having a problem which is simmilar to yours RaiderWill. I am trying to decide which tablet to buy and after reading your post and comparing it to my opinions and prices in my country (Poland), I am sure that Asus FHD is the best tablet for me. The only thing that keeps me from buying it is the Note 10.1. It is the same size as the Asus, has lower resolution screen (but the image is good overall), but it has the SPen and in Poland it costs as much as the Asus.
Have you considered buying /or have you had/ this tablet? What do you think about it, is it worth considering?

I just received mine the other day, and I don't know why people are trashing the tablet. So far every app I've tried has worked outstanding and out performs my other android tablets.
Now if more people would get one so xda would create a forum for it.

I've had both. I went with the Google play edition LG pad. I felt that the Asus tablet felt sluggish at times with just the dual core Intel chip. And I think the screen on the LG looked much better. But as far as price goes, yes its overpriced. Should be around $299

What is the hold up on development for this tablet do you think?

Your are correct it has been out for a couple of months. I just got mine last week and been searching like a maniac for roms. I'm thinking since it's still not as popular and the nexus it's going to take some time before we see anu development.

The Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 costs the same as the LG pad but it's a 10in tablet. That alone can sway you to it. However, when you look at the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10, it doesn't blow you away. Boring

Dual OS Tablets - Android 4.x + Windows 8.1 - general discussion, problems, tweaks

There are already couple of dual boot - able operating systems (OS) tablets on the market especially the well-known Teclast tablets with their Air 3G, Air II, X10HD, X80h and I am sure they will update their entire range of tablets with Dual boot OS, perhaps the other chinese manufacturers, but that does not matter as Teclast is the very best chinese brand for tablets. (quality-wise)
In consequence, I have a couple questions/suggestions. I want to buy Teclast X80h over any other tablets because it is extremely cheap (119$), it is dual OS and it is high-quality as any other Teclast tablets (for such low price!).
1. Are there any bugs with the dual OS that come from the factory? Do I have to be aware of it in any way? There is also a single Windows 8.1 OS for 115$, so if it is a problem with the Dual-OS, then I can go for the simple version.
2. How's the experience with the Dual OS? Does both OS work flawless or is there sacrificed anything?
3. Can you single boot? For instance, if I want to run only Win8.1, can I just boot Win8.1 and if I want Android I just restart the tablet and choose Android?
4. How much space is left in the internal memory on a 32GB eMMC? (~approximately) - Just out of curiosity because I heard Teclast supports on Win8.1 microSD cards up to 128GB with no problem.

I recently got the Teclast x98 Air II (without 3G, as I prefer to use my 4G mifi).
Overall, the build quality is excellent and the screen is very close to what you'd get on the iPad Air. The large 4:3 form factor also works better for tablets as I like surfing in portrait.
Dual boot works well, you just reboot and choose which OS you want to use. To switch, just shutdown and restart. The only thing I'd say is a problem will be the eMMC size of just 32gb. I have about 7gb free on each side of the system. You can partition a microSD with ext4 and use Link2SD on the android side, and move most things to the microSD on Windows. But if you use a lot of Windows Store apps, they can't be installed on removable media.
Performance is OK for most general tasks. Remember it's an Atom processor, so don't expect it to fly on 3D games. Not much of a gamer myself, so it doesn't matter much to me. I've thrown all sorts of videos at it and so far they all played pretty smoothly.
Teclast recently sorted out the Play Store bug with an update, so both sides of the system works as expected. I've experienced some freezes and thermal event message on Android, but they don't happen often and only when I was trying to play a 3D game.
I'd say get one with a larger screen if you plan on using Windows. The faster Z3736F processor on the X98 and X10HD can certainly be felt.

There is that Onda v891w that was released not so long ago for 25$ more than X80h. It is not Dual OS, it is only Windows 8.1, but it is a better alternative for X80h as far as specifications are concerned. I am more interested in Windows. In fact, I do not need the Android. I thought it was a bonus on X80h, but after all I wouldn't use it at all. Anyway, V891w has bigger 8.9" FULL HD IPS screen, the all the other specs are the same. But how reliable is Onda? I know that Teclast is a safe buy, but can anybody tell me about Onda's products? It is a relatively high-end tablet. Please owners of Onda provide some infos and experiences, problems etc

I've got my eye on the recently announced Onda V919 3G Air, it looks an exact copy of the teclast but with 64gb storage for about the same price. Their dual OS switching method looks a little more polished also... still I'll be waiting on reviews..

Reply on X98 Air 3G Dual: All major bugs were resolved with an OTA update on 20141225. The hardware issue still remains for some batches. System crash on playing GPU intensive 3D games. but this is not specific to Dual Boot models. It appears in all. There is n fix yet. But you may avoid this by buying it from Authorized seller on AliExpress. They confirmed that fresh batches don't have this issue.
2. How's the experience with the Dual OS? Does both OS work flawless or is there sacrificed anything?
Reply: It works great. Nothing is sacrificed except for the Disk space used by each OS.
3. Can you single boot? For instance, if I want to run only Win8.1, can I just boot Win8.1 and if I want Android I just restart the tablet and choose Android?
Reply: Yes, you can single boot. The information "switch with button at bottom" is not true because both OS runs separately never simultaneously.
4. How much space is left in the internal memory on a 32GB eMMC? (~approximately) - Just out of curiosity because I heard Teclast supports on Win8.1 microSD cards up to 128GB with no problem.

I know there are other threads especially on Air 3G tablet, but there are over 400 pages. I thought it would be easier to make a thread and those who had experience to share their opinion with us, those who are willing to buy Dual OS tablets.
For me, the Android version is not a must. I need the Windows mostly, but if there's a Dual OS version for 5$ more, why not get it. This is why I created the thread, so we the newbs get help. Any other discussion can be talked, I made this thread as a general discussion one, where people talk about ideas, tweaks, big deals, recommendations, ask for help etc

You may think that Android and 3G are not must, but soon you may have to change this opinion when you run into a situation like you are outside at a place with poor wifi or a special offer running on just Android apps !!
That's just my opinion.
The main drawback with dual OS is the storage space. So in that way, ONDA 919 Dual Boot is better, but we don't know how it fares in other areas. Like it has a 6000mAh battery which is sure to fail you.
The 9.7 inch models gives you an edge because they have Intel Z3736F which turbo boosts to 2.16 GHz.

Can you plug USB powered hub and connect: Mouse, keyboard, usb printer , and all working ?

YEs you can. Check videos on youtube. There are lots of them. You can charge it, use keyboard,mouse and whatever you want simultaneously with a OTG cable and a USB port hub. I recommend you a 3.0 one with at least 4 usb ports.

After reading many reviews, I think i'll be purchasing one aswell. I can live with the limited storage as I'd be mainly using it for office, reading, occasional movie watching and writing notes. If you are going to buy, MAKE SURE you buy it from the authorized seller as other sellers may have older models which contains the bugs and glitches. It may be a few dollars more expensive but is worth it to not have the troubles.
Aside from this, a question I want to ask is that is there any warranty at all for international buyers -- I'm in Canada.
There seems to be a misconception whether or not the X98 both 3g non 3g models have gps or not. Can anyone clarify this?

Thank you very much. Do you know is it possible to install win8.1 x86 over UEFI. I have found only x64 tutorials. I need x86 windows.

Thank you. I have spent 4 days searching the internet and fiddling with virtual machines and UEFI boot. And this is the conclusion !
You can't install or boot x86 vhd machine on x64 cpu with UEFI x64
With bios boot you can have x86 and x64 machines. Too bad this tablet don't have legacy boot
