Why I Chose The Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 Over LG's New G Pad 8.3 Tablet - Android General

I Welcome Discussion..
Reasons why I felt the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 Tablet is a better investment for me vs the LG G Pad 8.3 Tablet..
Short Version..
1) Resolution is 1920 x 1200 on both: 10 inches is better than 8.3 inches
2) Dedicated HDMI Out: Slimport & MHL Technologies need a power source to work without fail.. HDMI Out does not.
3) 32Gb of Internal Storage On The FHD 10 vs 16Gb on the G Pad 8.3: This plus 64 Gb Micro SD Card support.
4) A True Tablet UI: Icon Dock does not get rotated vertically to the right side of screen in Landscape.
5) Price: The MeMO PAD FHD 10 32Gb Version is at least $20.00 cheaper than the 16Gb (only option) G Pad 8.3..
Disagree?
Please Explain why...
Long Version..
1A) Even though the MeMO FHD 10 has a lower Lux rating you would be hard pressed to tell unless you are sitting in the middle of a grass field at high noon and the sun is right over your head.. other than that you Can see the screen outdoors..
2A) I've owned the Samsung Tab 3 8.0 & Note 8.0 along with a Nexus-7 2013.. The Samsung's had Samsung's own MHL adapter that I ordered.. it claimed to be able to charge your device while sending a HDMI signal / Picture out to your Big Screen.. That was not the case. The Tablet's still drained with use.. you needed that AC power just to get the unit to work.. if you tried not using AC and just plugging into your Tablet's USB port, the HDMI Out signal from you device to your T.V. was a no go or spotty if you were lucky. Same case for the Slimport Device I order for the Nexus-7 2013.
True HDMI Out Eliminates all of that.
You can now use the AC power to keep your Tablet charged as normal.. Have a dedicated HDMI Signal sending out information.. And in my case, combining that with a Bluetooth Game Controller I now have a Fully Functional Gaming Console.. just as if it were an Xbox or Playstation but now I can get HD games for $7.00 max instead of $59.99 max... all day play on the Big Screen without having to worry about battery drain.
3A) There is no argument here.. 32Gb without tricks is 32Gb without tricks,, with 26Gb ready for ALL downloaded Apps & Media guaranteed to work if you never install an SD Card.. vs 11.6 Gb's Available on the G Pad 8.3.
4A) It may not bother you in the least.. but I personally cannot stand the way Sub-10 inch Tablets rotate the icon dock to a vertical stance on the right side of the screen in Landscape mode.. It looks hideous to me.. Yes, there are way around it by dis-figuring icons or having none.. but why go through that? True Tablet Mode eliminates this nagging issue for me.
5A) The soon to be released ( As of this writing ) Nexus-10 2013 I am sure will be at least $399.00 for 16Gb & $499.00 for 32Gb's of storage.. with NO SD Card slot as we well know.. Sharper Brighter Screen? Yes.. worth $200.00 more for a 32Gb version to "Me" ? Nope.
The LG G Pad 8.3 with it's Snapdragon 600 heart will ( and already does ) get lots of development.. ROM's a plenty! where my Asus MeMO FHD 10 cannot even get a Thread!! ( Joking.. Not Angry at all )
And you know what? I may be getting a little old but... I can live with that!
The Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 is one of the most Lightly Skinned UI's out there.. Coupled with Intel's CloverTrail+ Technology, it's efficient and smooth without Lagg.
I thought long and hard about my decision.. even returning the first 16Gb $279.99 FHD 10 I had.. and just stayed "Empty Handed" for a few days to go over the Pro & Cons without bias..
My Conclusion was.. You cannot get more *Bang For The Buck* than the 32Gb Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 offers.
If you are a Flash-A-Holic ,
Buy a Nexus-7 2013.

Very Nice.. To see everyone in 100% agreement..

Like i've said in the other thread... i agree with you.
And have hope that x86 will see some adoption on the soft dev's part since it is a more "powerful" computer architecture (1 single core can do more calculus per second than a single core Cortex A15... and probably even more than the Cortex A57 cores)
Plus the Z2560 SoC its really a great chip... even with demanding games it never runs hot ... and the battery last a lot more time than the ARM based devices.
The next gen SoC's from Intel (Z3xxx) have the power to put ARM SoC's to shame (in terms of compute "power", and probably power consumption) except for the GPU (i really don't understand why they [Intel] are going to use their crappy GPU arch...)... Its going to be very interesting to see if Intel will gain a momentum in the mobile devices...
I just hope they both keep on the market, because the winner is the consumer (and computer science)... Would love to see some Power arch devices as well and some MIPS...

Hey Exnor.. I just wanted to clarify, This thread was not addressing you personally..
But I agree with all your points. Especially the point of the MeMO FHD 10 NEVER running hot.. no matter what you throw at it... I Love That.
it's just icing on the cake.. And I've read several reviews of the G Pad 8.3.. Let's just say my bubble was busted.. It's a great Tablet but at $350.00+ Tax it's well overpriced in today's market just like the Note 8.0 is at $360.00+ Tax for an 8" Tablet.. I don't care what the modding community does with Root & Roms for those 2 Tablets.. And they bring less to the table than the Less Expensive Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10..

Yes I did.. When I returned the 16 Gb I decided to step up to a 32 Gb this time around..
Have you tried a 64 Gb card? I have read conflicting reports that it support it... Either way I am cool having over 50 Gb's Minimum of storage onboard is just fine with me... but if it ends up being 26 Gb's available (Internal) + 60 Gb's (SD Card) available.. I won't argue with having over 80Gb's of storage onboard as well.. :good: and you are correct..
This Tablet is definitely a Keeper.. It just brings too much to the table and has an extremely light UI, Tremendous Batterylife, HD, HDMI, O.T.G... the list goes on and on...

Actually i did not tried any sdcard yet .
The internal flash is more than enough for me right now, because i only use it for OS and Apps... I stream all videos and audio from my NAS.
I would give it a try, but i don't have a 64GiB sdcard

Thanks for the response Exnor.. I know.. we have a Ton of Memory available I basically have 32 Gb card I've dragged from device to device that is the culmination of several years of stuff.. 1/2 a dozen Cutting Edge 3D Games 1/2 dozen Movies 90 average apps and I still have over 13 Gb's available internally and 16 Gb's of old stuff on my SD Card... So I'm not hurting for space either but I'm just curious if anyone has confirmed it working or not.. I may buy one if I spot a fair deal and give it a shot myself.. with so many new games in the works and everything now being in High Definition, It will not hurt in the long run to have a much space available as possible.. even though I also have 50 gigs of it free for the next 2 years I just cannot get into "The Cloud" for storage at all... I want my material kept locally..

Word of caution mate, dont buy cheap SDcards... they usually are below standard and have very poor compatibility and data rates. Best OEM so far i've experienced are Sandisk, Transcend and Samsung.
I don't use the "cloud" either. Its stupid to use a service that you need constant ISP service and a fair bandwidth... People will realize this in time (i'm talking of course of mass market products, not professional ones).
I use the Goggle "cloud" just to backup text files(Docs, PDFS etc...)... for that is very very usefull, BUT i have always a redundant copy on several computers or on my Backup HDD's (not networked... never put sensitive stuff on a network).
Changing subject, this week Intel announced that they will start to manufacture ARM based SoC's for other companies (since they have the best semiconductor facilities in the world along side with Samsung and Texas (?)).
No word if Intel will return to produce their own ARM based SoC.. (like in 2000-2003) but its unlikely since they are really pushing the Atom Z3xxx series SoC out there to tablets and low end laptops.
The new Asus phone pad already uses a Z3xxx (4 x86 cores... but a Intel GPU arch :/)... would like to see how they perform.

Not to worry Exnor.. Nothing but Sandisk for years now..
Give Intel until 2020.. they will be a Major Player and possibly the *Leader* in this industry as what is known as the " Laptop / Computers" of 2013 become the Dinosaurs of 2020.. Powerful Tablets will replace these bulky concepts in the next 6 years..

I agree... Intel have made huge progress in power consumption savings. And ARM does not have a processor arch that can rival head-to-head with currently available x86 arch...
But i hope they both stay in the market, because competition is what makes new tech to be produced and better prices for the consumer

Exnor.. I am quite sure neither side is ready to relent this growing market.. but Intel has to take it.. Arm most certainly will not give it away..

Hi!
Sorry I'm a little bit off topic, but I am having a problem which is simmilar to yours RaiderWill. I am trying to decide which tablet to buy and after reading your post and comparing it to my opinions and prices in my country (Poland), I am sure that Asus FHD is the best tablet for me. The only thing that keeps me from buying it is the Note 10.1. It is the same size as the Asus, has lower resolution screen (but the image is good overall), but it has the SPen and in Poland it costs as much as the Asus.
Have you considered buying /or have you had/ this tablet? What do you think about it, is it worth considering?
Thanks

I just received mine the other day, and I don't know why people are trashing the tablet. So far every app I've tried has worked outstanding and out performs my other android tablets.
Now if more people would get one so xda would create a forum for it.

I've had both. I went with the Google play edition LG pad. I felt that the Asus tablet felt sluggish at times with just the dual core Intel chip. And I think the screen on the LG looked much better. But as far as price goes, yes its overpriced. Should be around $299

What is the hold up on development for this tablet do you think?

I have the latest software 4.7.3 rooted no problem, but I meant more or any custom roms, this device has been out for a while I think hasn't it? I am wondering since it is an Intel chipset that development won't happen at all on it.

Your are correct it has been out for a couple of months. I just got mine last week and been searching like a maniac for roms. I'm thinking since it's still not as popular and the nexus it's going to take some time before we see anu development.

the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 is boring
The Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 costs the same as the LG pad but it's a 10in tablet. That alone can sway you to it. However, when you look at the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10, it doesn't blow you away. Boring

Android Tablet Discussion

I was thinking that a Generic Android Tablet Discussion thread would be a good idea. No matter the brand , maker size etc. Talk about them here.
Im debating between the Archos 101 and waiting to see if the Moto tab is good.
Whats Out There
I have been keeping a keen eye out for the variety of higher end tablets and here is what I have sort of come up with so far:
Samsung Tablet (7")
Motorola Stingray (10")
Viewsonic viewpad (7")
LG Optimus pad
SteamTV Elocity pad (7")
Archos Family of pads (3"-10")
They all have there merits, and the minor things that make them not so great. But here is a list of the gamot of features you can look for. Some of the tablets have alot of them, some have none, its basically what you want to do with it:
3G
WIFI
GPS
Bluetooth 2.1 or 3.0
Capacitive Screen
USB port(s)
(Micro) SD card slot
HDMI
G-Sensor
Accelerator meter
Geomagnetic sensor
Light Sensor
Front Camera
Back Camera
Google Apps Integration
NVIDA Tegra 2 versus 1GHx CPU w/ GPU
1024 x 600 resolution versus 800 x 480
RAM
Disk Space
Version of Android (2.2 now 3.0 later)

I know they are poppping out of the woodwork now. My biggest thing is that the majority are really expensive. Like the new Toshiba announced today is $540. THat is why Either the Cruz or Archos will match all my criteria. But the nice thing is that there seems to be a ton of different options.
Toshiba Folio 100
10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen
1024 x 600
Android 2.2 (Froyo)
NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
16 GB internal storage (32 GB available SD expansion)
Adobe Flash 10.1
1.3 MP front-facing camera
Mini-HDMI
USB 2.0
Bluetooth 2.1
WLAN (802.11)
Mobile broadband (available Q1 2011)
I've been disappointed with the IFA ones as almost all of them have 3G which means here, onerous data contracts or ridiculous prices w/o.
Archos underwent feature regression(e.g. no GPS), and has some whacked prices for the 70 & 101. The rest seem kind of useless to me too small and at least the smallest two don't have any way of expanding storage which makes them kind of useless as anything other than a portable music player.
The Viewsonic is the Olivepad one? Didn't seem to be all that great.
Toshiba Folio MIGHT have been nice, but that Tegra will likely make it expensive.
...just too many hawking 3G and not enough that have useful extras like higher res cameras, GPS, mics, and maybe bluetooth... i.e. I'm just meh'ed by IFA offerings... Witstech A81-E is still looking good and they just got another new fw release 8/31...
Good catch, forgot the toshiba one. Here is what I am looking for a tablet:
3G (mainly so I can have google apps)
7" Display
Capacitive screen (OMLED prefered)
1024 x 600
Android 2.2 upgradeable to android 3.0
front camera
1 GHz CPU (perferably the tegra 2)
GPU (if no NVIDIA CPU)
front camera (dont care about a back one)
A-GPS
Bluetooth (at least 2.1)
WIFI B/G/N
USB
8+ GB internal storage
SD card slot is nice but not manditory
HDMI is nice but not manditory
Which matches up with the samsung tab, but the British price I found had it at over 600 British pounds, which converts to over 1000 US dollars.

Damn that is expensive.
Im mainly looking for a ereader, web surfer, watch some videos on trips, and check my gapps when on wifi.
Check out the stream tv elocity pad. No 3g, but no gps ether. the reason why everyone puts on 3g is because it's the only way to get google apps on it, until google changes their requirements for google apps.

I think a 2Ghz CPU, as of right now, is over powered for android. I have a Gentouch78 tablet that runs at 600MHz and it seems to run OK. My 1GHz nexus one has had no issues, and I have it multi tasking several apps at once sometimes. It will get really hot, especially when I toss the car charger on it while its doing all that, but never seen it slow down to unresponsiveness. As for the HDD space. I dont use mine much for multi media, so 50gb would be overdoing it for me. Just the ability to have an SD card slot would be enough for me, that right there is 32 gb.
Now dealing with the android OS itself, this is where things are starting to get wierd. You have 2.2, which is really a phone OS, you have 3.0 which is really a tablet OS, and so the current samsung tablet is supposed to be 2.2 and will get 3.0, but now this 3.5 is where it gets confusing. Some of the stuff I have been reading is stating that 3.5 is going to be an entirely different OS completly, or at least have an entirely different usage beyond that of a tablet or cell phone. And that you will have to buy an entirely new piece of hardware to use it because samsung already said their current tablet wont get 3.5 when it comes out, but i twill get 3.0. This is making me think that 3.5 may be the google chrome OS, which from what I am hearing I am not a total fan of. So basically, the idea as I understand it, is that the hardware will just be the input/output device and all the applications will be stored on teh cloud as well as the work being done will be done on the cloud. This is all nice and dandy until either 1) everyone gets on all at once and bogs down the system or 2) the cloud or network goes down and the device is worthless. Thats why I like android right now. If you have no data connection you can still do work. Now some things on android that do run off the cloud, like the GPS, if you need to reroute and you loose the data connection, since all the work is done on the back end you cant get anywhere until the data connection comes back.
Since Android is a full fledge Linux OS I think it can do whatever you need it to do, you just need to port the apps over. So i think it can replace a laptop, but there will always be certain things that make a laptop easier to use that are unrelated to the android OS, like a real keyboard. With phones, for instance, I still feel more comfortable texting on a physical keyboard on my blackberry then I do on the virtual keyboard on my nexus one. Now can I develope a web page, photoshop some images and toss them on the web page, with android? If they ported the apps over then sure why not, the physical keyboard will just make it easier. But as soon as you start talking windows 7 you are changing the entire hardware requirements (ARM CPU versus an x86 CPU) which will allow you to run your favorite web development software and photo editing software, and now your 50gb of disk space will be all chewed up with the OS and applications but no room for media, and with the new hardware requirements the price goes up (not like the samsung tab isnt expensive either) but then the bottom line is its still awkward to use because of the lack of a physical keyboard.
Now I am just using web development/photo editing as an example, simplier tasks, like email and web surfing, will require less and are easily done on the android OS. But the bottom line is to use the right tool for the right job, outline your requirements and find a solution that best fits your needs. I believe that android will be a decent laptop replacement if all your doing with your laptop is surfing the web and sending email but if your trying to do less casual stuff, like photo editing and web development, then android right now is obviously not enough, but in the future it might be. It goes back to the age old question, does hardware push the software industry, or does software push the hardware industry?

Hmmm.... looks like they took a screenshot of an android VM running on ubuntu and photoshopped it into their device. If they don't have any pictures of the tablet in action, I'd be really dubious...
Finally I ordered this one, so will post some review when it arrives.
So I tested tablet I ordered few weeks ago and realized that this is the same device as Advent Vega. I test quadrant benchmark and got 2200 points without any customization of rom.
Screen is nice and response is fast. I can recommend this one.

One week with a Xoom / Honeycomb

(posting here because I think that GTAB users would want to know about this)
Don't get me wrong - if we can find a way to port Honeycomb, I'm all for it. If anything else, some of the apps are very nice and would be a worthy update from Froyo.
However, at this particular moment, I'm not all that thrilled with Honeycomb on the Xoom. Mainly due to SPEED. Quadrant and Nenamark scrores are definitely lower than recent mods or even stock 3991 on the GTAB, and more importantly it's actually noticeable in real-world use. Case in point: Launcher Pro. On TNT Lite 5.0.0, it's very fast - but on the Xoom, it's actually choppy. I don't have an overclocked kernel, but I shouldn't HAVE to overclock it to get the same speeds as I have on my GTAB. And Angry Birds Seasons actually slows down at times! I don't I've ever seen that on my GTAB.
My point here is that the Xoom users aren't running a speedy little OS like we thought they would be. I assume that, eventually, Honeycomb will shake out the bugs and the speed will increase, but it's NOT as fast as the GTAB or the Adam. That is actually quite disappointing, given the price point.
The hardware is very nice (ie the screen angles are better, the camera is better, the speakers are better etc.), but the software needs improvement.
so, I guess that we should get a Ipad 2 then. =) just kidding. I played around it too for a few days, I could do pretty much everything in tnt lite or vegan 7... I am also not a big fan of the look - looks very cheap and fragile compares to Ipad2. I am leaning more to ASUS transformer and the screen is stunning. I guess that I will sell it in ebay and wait for the transformer which is scheduled to release in April starting $399..
Roebeet: I just wanted to say that "THANK YOU SO MUCH" for all your work and help here. Sorry, I just sold my gtab but I am NOT leaving Android. Just try to find a good match.. it is like looking for a wife.. hahaha.
Thanks for the candid and professional assessment. We have perhaps reposed too much faith in Honeycomb without reckoning on its infancy. After all, Android 3.0 is a paradigm shift in the firmware's evolution, and such shifts only come right after a few iterations.
Makes me think that those company's launching new tablets still running Froyo may have a point...let the public get to know new hardware in a familiar milieu until the Honeycomb environment matures.

You are very welcome! I am continually humbled by the user community, here.
I am still waiting for "the next big thing" - the Xoom was practically a gift, which is why I own one. But the ASUS looks very interesting, the Elocity A10 (if they ever release it) or the upcoming stuff from Malata.
I'm guessing that this slowness problem is mainly on Honeycomb / Nividia itself, so any Honeycomb Tegra 2 tablet would be slower than a GTAB/Adam, if it were released today. I'm confident that it will eventually be corrected.
As for the iPad2, anyone else find it interesting that they sold out so fast? That's not like Apple. I'm guessing that they were planning an April release but moved it up due to the Xoom release and now they've run out of the limited stock they had. All these companies play the same games.
I used a xoom today at bestbuy for about 20 minutes, in my short time, I found it too be very fluid and it flew, and the verizon signal was very strong, it was loading websites pretty much instantly. I bet if I owned a xoom it may not feel as good, but I can wait, for honeycomb. How is the battery life on your xoom?

I was in the same boat when I demoed it - it felt fast and fluid in the store. But after I had it in my hand and could compare it with my GTAB, my impression changed a bit.
Of course some for of these apps (like Launcher Pro) could just be problematic on Honeycomb. But when I see Nenamark scores that are so drastically different, then I know something's up. And Quadrant, which is not all that reliable keep in mind, is clocking in at ~1900. That around the same score as the original GTAB stock used to be.
As for battery, definitely no complaints. I haven't done any hard scores, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's in the 6 to 8 hour range.

I can't agree more with on the subject of the ASUS transformer. Even after seeing the leak of Staples selling the WiFi XOOM for 599.00, I'm still holding off for the transformer. Specs looked better and I'm sure ASUS will do their best to release a bug free product. Been a huge fan of ASUS for yrs now so I may be biased...nah. They just sell a good product.

I think this is an important thought maybe we should remember. Honeycomb was built new for tablets/Xoom while the rest stay with Froyo or Gingerbread. We've come to expect that each new release brings improvements to our devices, while Honeycomb really is a 1.0 release for tablets.
"Honeycomb really is a 1.0 release for tablets..."
Exactly my point, and well put.

Roebeet - are there any tools or monitors to show what an Android system is doing? For example, are there threads that are consuming too much CPU or is the I/O system really busy for some reason ... stuff like that.
i'm not sure but did motorola put any overlays on honeycomb like they have with their android phones (cliq w/motoblur)? if there is, maybe that's whats causing it to be a tad slower.

Nope, the Xoom is a pure "Google Experience" device which means it is completely vanilla Android, just like Motorola's original Droid was a "Google Experience" phone.
Video Chat and/or BT Tether?
Does Zoom have either a working Video Chat app or the ability to use a mobile phone's data service via bluetooth or tether? If yes, can either of these capabilities be copied into a future ROM for gTablet?
Not sure this post belongs in this thread but I expect to have a Honeycomb device late next week. I can post my impressions of Android 3.0 on a different tablet, if anyone is interested.
The tab is the Acer Iconia A100. I've been looking for a 7 incher that has some class, and this one looks to be it.
Honeycomb on a 7" capacitive multitouch display (1024 x 600 pixels), Tegra 2, Nvidia GeForce GPU, 5 megapixels camera, 2 Megapixels front-facing camera, 512MB RAM, 8GB internal storage, micro-SD card slot, 1080p, Dolby Mobile sound, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi N, HDMI port, mini-USB and full-sized USB port.
Very nice form factor in a sleek minimalist design, as shown here:
http://gadgetian.com/8619/acer-iconia-tab-a100-specs-price/
A friend who's visiting Shenzhen, China, saw it (it's already released there) and asked if he should bring me one. For $296? Why ask?!

It's got a Tegra 2 - this device could potentially be more helpful with development efforts than a Xoom. That's assuming it actually has Honeycomb - I wonder how they managed that?

I haven't really tested either (I don't have a data plan and I don't plan on getting one). There's no video chat OOTB, tmk.

I wondered about that myself - but apparently it does have Honeycomb out of the box. I look forward to sharing my impressions.
Pricing over in Shenzhen gives you some insight into the mark-ups we suffer in the West. Consider these prices:
LG Optimus Pad 3D Touch Screen Android 3.0 Dual-core tablet PC USD$386
Toshiba 10.1 inch 64GB Android 3.0 Tablet With Nvidia Tegra 2 USD$399
ASUS Eee Slate EP121 4GB RAM 64GB SSD Windows 7 Tablet USD$499
Asus Eee Pad Slider keyboard 3G 10.1 inch 32GB tablets USD$356
Asus Eee Pad Transformer 3G 10.1 inch 1GB RAM 64GB tablet USD$356
Asus Eee Pad MeMO 7 inch 32GB Android 3.0 Tablet 1080p playback USD$266
Asus Eee Pad MeMO 7 inch 64GB Android 3.0 Tablet 1080p playback USD$299
Motorola Xoom 10.1 inch 64GB Android 3.0 Tablet USD$380
Blackberry Playbook 7 inch 64GB SSD Tablet USD$229
HTC Flyer 7 inch 1.5GHz Android 3.0 WIFI 3G Tablet Smartphone USD$309
Maybe XDA should charter a group flight to China?
Wondering.....
I heard that Moto released an update to the Xoom, and it bumped the Quadrant scores up nearly 30%. I was wondering if the update tightened things up a bit like VS did with the GTab.

Weight 470 grams
battery runtime's gonna be short...
Elocity A10 looked nice UNTIL nvidia announce Tegra3 kal-el quad core w/NEON, and improved GPU... gtab will get me by until a realistically priced Tegra3 tablet shows up... (which rules out motorola, samsung, and asus(I'm surprised with these guys as their prices are usually great on notebooks for the specs)...)
"Weight 470 grams
battery runtime's gonna be short..."
A sharp observation. Much depends on whether this thing will come to me with the 3G module in or not. (That's not clear to me). If it's running network data, I'll have to disable that service to conserve juice - as people have done with their Sprint Galaxy Tabs. We'll see!
Don't blame you for waiting out the first wave of tech in 2011. I myself will retain my Elocity A10 pre-order up to the end of March. If it doesn't arrive by then, I'm cancelling and will turn to either the LG Optimus Pad or the Asus Slider.
I was given a xoom to use for testing at work a couple of weeks ago, and been hammering at it pretty hard.
There's only one thing about the xoom that I love and get jealous about, its not the screen, or even Honeycomb, its the 10 point multi touch.
Doing anything that uses more then one input seems to work so much smother. If there was someway to upgrade that on my tab running Vegan Ginger, I think I'd be in heaven.

[Q] Which tablet should I buy?

I'm currently thinking about buying a tablet, but I'm not certainly sure if should get one, and, if yes, which.
I'm planning to use it mainly for watching movies, surfing the net, playing some games and probably doing some office stuff on it (like e-mails, but also text documents etc.). Entertainment stuff is the main focus, the last one could be neglected...
The maximum I'd be willing to spend would be something around 400 Euros (by looking at the amazon.com store, it's like more or less exactly the same in dollars, without conversion... ) but less would be definitly better (off course, if a few bucks more make a huge difference, it would be also okay).
Concerning features, I would like:
The screen size should be 8" to 10", the bigger, the better
A USB port (which supports working as host) would be nice to have
The screen should be pretty responsive, and also with a rather high resolution
A front camera would be nice (doesn't have to have the best quality)
It should have a good CPU and GPU, so games and stuff run smooth
At least Android 3.1, an announced update to ICS would be much appreciated
some kind of SD card slot (or an other way to extend storage, an USB port counts )
As the CES 2012 is about to happen, and probably some new tablets are going to be announced, I am also open to tablets that are going to be released in January or February this year, as long as they are in my price limit.
Oh, and by the way, regarding this, are there already tablets on the way, which are wort waiting for?
I'd be very glad if you made it till here and also would leave a comment below
Best regards and I apologize for my bad english
Nascor
P.S.: Before I forget, one last question: Is it possible to put a 2,5" Hard Drive (powered over USB) to an Android tablet?
P.P.S.: Oh, and if it helps in any way, I own a HTC Desire.
nobody? :/
Acer Iconia A500 or A501
A little more expensive Motorola Xoom or Iconia A500.
Acer Iconia A500
wifi only or with 3g?
Just wifi is enough, if I really need 3G I can enable tethering...
The Acer one is certainly not bad, but I kind of don't like the design, but thanks.
I will have a closer look at the Xoom now...

I suggest to go into a shop and hold both in your hands.
First i liked the xoom alot better, but the iconia just feels so much better when holding it. The sound quality of the iconia's speakers is really astonishing.
The iconia has a normal sized usb port, the xoom doesn't.

looks rather good, but are the 16 gigs enough for a bunch of games? The 32GB one is much too expensive, I think
there is Asus Transformer Prime, but it's 500 euros the 32 gig version.
I think 16gb is enough, plus you can just add an sd card if it isn't.

Transformer Prime would be great for you.
10-inch display with 1280x800 resolution, Super-IPS
It has optional keyboard dock that has USB-port, so you can connect your hard drive, it'll recognize it as disk drive and you'll be able to view the hadr drive as a filesystem.
Front-facing camera is 1.2 MP.
Tegra 3 is the best for gaming and has a great GPU right now. CPU is great too.
Android 3.2 Honeycomb is coming with the tablet. There's an update to ICS coming (14-15 Jan)
SD-card slot + USB-port on the keyboard dock.
But costs 'a bit more' than you wish. About 585 Euros ^_^
So, I think that Acer Iconia Tab A500/501 is the best choice for you
Or you can watch at the original Transformer which costs about 350 Euros (16 GB)
Original vs Prime:
Screen (IPS vs S-IPS);
processor (Tegra 2 vs Tegra 3);
camera (5 MP vs 8 MP).
But you still have the USB-port on the dock, as well as the microSD card-slot.

Sure, but as I read, you can't install apps and stuff on the SD card, it's threatened as an external hard drive (on the tablet s)

The Prime looks pretty good but also pretty (and probably too) expensive...the original Transformer looks also pretty decent, but as you need the dock for connecting an usb device, it's also like 499€, sadly
*quick edit* Feature wise the Xoom looks not bad, too. ~410€ for 32Gigs + 3G looks pretty good to me...gotta find some reviews
Yeah, I've written about the price of the Prime.
Xoom is too laggy... Maybe you should wait for Xyboard?
Even with the new update?
The xyboard hasn't a tegra 3, is it worth it though?

Anyone now start considering about Huawei Mediapad FHD?

When initially Mediapad FHD was announced, most of us said well it's Huawei. Bad reputation company... But with so many QC issue ASUS is having, I am start thinking ASUS is as good/bad as Huawei (well I actually never tried Huawei so maybe I should not say this..).
As far as the specification on paper, this unit could be equal or perhaps even superior to the Infinity.

The key specification here is CPU/GPU. Despite slower CPU clock speed it has better GPU (at least core # wise). This is like Exynos chip that Samsung has. Simply looking at New Ipad its CPU is mere 1GHz Dual Core, but GPU is where its power is. If you look at Benchmarks Android tablet beats CPU power but GPU power is far inferior. Exynos chip on SIII and Galaxy Note 10.1 comes the closest but yet far away. But considering how stable Galaxy Note 10.1 is (even on ICS), the stability must be coming from the memory (2GB) or GPU or maybe Nand (perhaps combination of all). So if mediapad does it right, it may function better overall than the Infinity, which definitely has some bottle neck somewhere.
I am not saying the MediaPad FHD would for sure be superior, but as Infinity having so many issues, giving a try on MediaPad FHD might not be a bad idea.
*Too bad MediaPad FHD gave up on 2GB memory as originally planned.
No because:
1. Huawei doesn't get dev support, ASUS gets some.
2. 1.2 ghz vs 1.7 ghz
3. 1 GB of RAM is the same
3. Not IPS+
Yes because:
1. Questionably better quality control

#1 is probably big on tech savy people which I guess majority of people on XDA.
#2, again I don't know much importance. Exynos on Galaxy Note 10.1 is 1.4 GHz but essentially equivalent Atuntu score and actually overall more smooth/stable than the Infinity (when infinity is performing at its peak with tweaks, I think it can match but not consistent and definitely not for everyone)
#3, I don't know why Huawei dropped this... It originally had 2GB RAM
#4. Hmm... Even with IPS+ under the direct sunlight I still had difficulty seeing and inside, I don't need IPS+, so for me IPS+ was never needed option.
Now for QC, never knows but with current QC track record of ASUS I am seeing, I cannot imagine any company could be much worse than that.
I think key Yes. here (Potential) is "16 core GPU."
But again who knows... I'm just throwing this here because I really want to have FHD tablet.... but cannot go back to Infinity until the ANR after ANR issue gets solved..
P.S. I never found Keion that interesting... but I know it is extremely highly rated anime.

H-how dare you insult my favorite anime!
Joking aside, the main reason for instability on the infinity are the FHD screen (which the mediapad shares) and the IO issues (which the mediapad does not have).
Also wanted to add the infinity has a 12(+?) core GPU.

Not buying cheap chinese knockoff. Almost no Chinese company I knows of has the ability to perform effective QC like the Taiwanese/Japanese/American companies do.
The closest one I can think of is Lenovo and their line of computers are still a long way from the old Thinkpads of yore (the corporations who stopped using thinkpads are a clear indication of that).
Funny considering that all iPhones and iPads are made by a Chinese company.
Huawei is fast becoming one of the largest telecom companies in the world.

There's a difference between manufacturing and quality control.
Well Huawei, is still quite unknown, but the latest phones were not that bad.
I just don't understand why they wait so long to release their products. For example the new quad phone was announced for April? and still nothing. Now they have to fight against s3,hox and soon Note 2 and I phone 5,which is pretty hard.
For the pad is the same. Against note 10.1, tf700 and "new", ipad-I don't really so a chance. Well prove me wrong.
Nevertheless I will take a look at it, just to compare.

True. But with its reputation, only way huawei can prove is when compared to more known brand. Otherwise, most would simply dismiss by saying but tf700 is coming soon... I really like fhd so hope either this or tf700 next update is the answer.
I'm thinking about the Mediapad FHD.
A combination of the lack of 3g support on the Infinity & Asus' stupid pricing in the UK means I will be looking at other options.
Actually, after returning my TF700 after a few days (freezing , light bleed, ands creen input Issues), I now think the way to go will be the new Microsoft Surface or some other Windows RT tablet , assuming they can get developers to create bunches of apps like Android and Apple (But I remember that app creation started off slow for both these platforms as well - Do you remember how few Ipda apps there were at the beginning) Hardwarewise it is a gamechanger. If you get a chance, watch the keynote video on it. I don't think QC will be an issue - I think it will be Applelike detail, but with a system that allows expandability via USB and sd, which is what I want, as well as that new keyboard. We are so close to release now that it would be a mistake to jump into another platform without at least seing what is released.
I really wanted to have Aius work for me but after 2 failed attempts (Prime and Infinity) I give up.

Well UK will get MediaPad before US so hope to see some review from there.

Windows 8 tablet is definitely interesting player. But based on the recent IFA Berlin, I feel like their target audience is slightly different. Here is why.
Windows 8 RT
This is more of direct competition to Android Tablet & iPad. But just as you mentioned, it will likely to take sometime before app market catches up with that of iPad or Android. Both had phone background so though they weren't initially optimized, they had enough application from get go. Whereas, Windows 8 the biggest advantage (could have been) was to use all Windows software poool, which RT does not allow and instead asking programmers to create Metro specific applications. So question is how long will it be? 6 months? 1 year? No RT tablet that is announced thus far have neither FHD screen nor inductive pen capabilities i.e. lacking main selling features of Infinity or Galaxy Note 10.
My guess is by the time the Metro market matures, there will be so many more RT tablet with cheaper prices, and of course better specs. So personally, RT is a pass.
Windows 8 Pro
Samsung Ativ Smart Pro actually have phenomenal spec with FHD, pen support, and support for all windows applications. However, its battery life is mere 5 hours DVD playtime (Infinity claims 9.5 hours and in my real life use I get only 5-6 hours, so who knows what 5 hours really become). The weight is quite heavy.
At this point, I feel like if Samsung really releases P10 Android Tablet, that would be the one but given such recent release of Galaxy Note 10.1, new tablet won't probably come for at least 6 months.
Certainly interesting time for tablet.
I bought the TF101 a long time ago, and after reading about the tf700, I've come to the conclusion that Nvidia Tegra sucks. I still can't watch movies at full frame rates on my TF101. Also the whole I/O problem really annoys me. However, software wise, Asus rules. Fantastic support for the tf101. Also, from what I read Tegra 4 may change things.
I bought a Huawei U8800 about the same time as the TF101. Hardware was pretty good, especially for the price. Software (especially OS optimization and updates) was terrible to say the least.
I'm not sure which tablet I want to buy. If Asus was using a different (read: better) processor than the Tegra 3, there would be no question. But I felt kinda burned on the Tegra 2 and the I/O situation. If the mediapad is significantly cheaper, I may go that route.
Also, I don't really use custom roms and dev stuff, so I don't factor that in. However, from my experience with the U8800, China has a huge dev community, and The XDA developers are aware of it and borrow from and work with them. So you will get some decent dev community support with Huawei, not as much as with Asus though.

The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M) thread

Decided to start this thread on advice from another forum poster in an attempt to drum up some interest with the hope of building a community of support since there aren't a lot of resources online about it. It's a good, fairly recently released android tablet with decent specs. I bought it last week and so far I am not disappointed though there are definitely a few niggles about it, as is the case with just about any device.
(pros) Things I love about this tablet:
-hexacore processor... it feels nice and snappy.
-big bright 9.7" ips screen
-build quality feels solid and seems very much on a par with Apple's iPads
-reasonably priced, especially when compared to the comparable Samsung tablets
-4GB RAM & 64GB internal storage (YEAH!)
-MicroSD storage (no singing the Nexus tablet blues anymore with devices that don't have MicroSD support)
(cons) Things I hate about this tablet:
-no root ability so no flashing of custom roms (so far)
-only android 6.0
-PowerVR GPU failed to blow me away for gaming but is still no slouch... just no Nvidia K1 killer
-hardware compacitive buttons instead of softkeys (which may be a plus or a minus but I feel it's a minus because of difficulties seeing the buttons when not lit in the dark)
-battery is not the best but not the worst either. Buy a $20 powerbank if you go on long plane trips
-too many pre-loaded Asus apps (bloatware) though I'm beginning to discover that they can be disabled
Anyway, I'd like to build up a community of support for this device and share tips & tricks for its userbase. The most important thing I'd like to see is a way for it to be rooted so that we can have some real fun with it. Plus, it should bust open the interest in this tablet tenfold if it occurs. It deserves its place among other classic more budget-conscious android tablets like the Nexus 7 2013, I feel..
The chipset is so new on this tablet that I can't get a fastboot command that shows the state of the bootloader to work.
Although Asus usually has locked bootloaders, Mediatek chipset are usually not locked in my experience. My Lenovo tab 2 10A has a Mediatek chipset that was not locked.
I am sure the chipset on this tablet is locked, but not positive. With a locked bootloader we can't do much with this tablet.
In the past I have owned the Asus TF 700 and the Asus TF 701 if memory serves Asus provided a bootloader unlock key (app) to unlock the bootloaders on these tablets on the Asus support pages.
On Asus products I currently have:
ASUS ZENPAD S 8.0 Z580CA
ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M)
I have asked Asus support for a key for the S 8.0 and never received a reply. The S 8.0 has a Intel processor and the 3S 10 has a Mediatek processor. I really like Asus products but latley they are very restrictive on options.

Seems like there are a lot of here that migrated from the N7-2013 to the Zenpad. I had been trying to hold off for the long rumored Samsung S3 but gave up and got the Asus as a Christmas gift. Like most of you all too, it would be really nice to see an update either by Asus or custom ROM. But I think the mediatek processor is the biggest limiting factor at this point.
I do not think Mediatek is such a negative thing. If you take a close look most of the large manufacturers of Android devices are using or have used Mediatek chipsets in some of those products. The ageing chipsets are almost non-existent in today's devices. The king of the hill on mobile chipsets is Qualcomm Snapdragon. The more Mediatek is used the more consumers will look for third party development. Imo
I'd like to christen this topic with its first question to owners of this device (or any android 6.0+ device for that matter) that are into portable gaming with their phones and tablets.
I just bought a SanDisk Ultra 128 GB MicroSD card which will be delivered tomorrow according to USPS tracking. Since I have a rather large GooglePlay base of purchased android games and apps, would it be best to use MicroSD card external storage or adoptive storage for them? Thanks.

I'm with you on terms of performance with the MediaTek and I do think it's likely to start seeing more widespread use. The weakness I was referring to is that at the moment it's not getting much love from the Custom ROM Developers

True XDA seems to have little love for Mediatek.
Fasle on getting widespread use. The use of Mediatek is worldwide in phones and tablets and coming on strong.
Problem: I just inserted the SanDisk Ultra 128GB MicroSD card into my Zenpad 3S 10 and though the card is recognized and I'm able to format it as external storage, I'm not getting the option to format it as adoptable storage. What could be the issue? Is this something that one of the Asus bloatware apps is causing? The android version is 6.0 so I know it's adoptable storage capable.

I prefer have the external sd card listed as external storage, but to see more options you may want to go to the website and download the manual for this device if you haven't already.

I was able to enable adoptable storage under the ZenUI launcher by using this tutorial, but the transfer rates are ridiculously slow with the SanDisk Ultra 128GB. When I formatted it as adoptable storage, I got a warning that my MicroSD card was too slow for adoptable storage and that I would probably have issues. But the Sandisk is rated at 80 MB/s so I'm wondering what's up. When I tried to migrate the data to the MicroSD it said it would take an hour to migrate 37GB of data from my internal storage but it self-aborted after about 20 minutes or 10GBs. WTF? Running SD benchmarks right now to determine exact transfer rates and even that is taking forever in reading operations for the benchmark. According to the other ZenPad topic, this Asus device may have issues with large 128GB cards. I'm starting to become disgruntled because I bought this tablet with the hope of transferring all my apps and games to the Sandisk 128GB card and having it actually be feasible to run stuff off of it.
ETA: Just did a cold reboot and now my SanDisk 128GB MicroSDXC is showing 42 MB/s read speed using the A1 SD Bench app instead of benchmarking at 4.5 MB/sec before the cold reboot. Maybe this will work out after all. Retrying the data migration to adoptable storage now.
Well, my adventures in adoptable storage have not been a total success. I posted about my specific issue with it here. Hopefully other owners of the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 have found a way to at least make microsd cards formatted as external storage able to run obb files off of it. I'm only realizing now how badly needed that root ability is. Thanks for any help.
I contacted Asus about upcomming updates and got the following responses (roughly translated from german):
Yes, an upgrade to Android 7 is planned for your device (I asked about the LTE version). Unfortunately, it has been delayed, but we expect it to be released at the end of the second quarter

I then asked them about the non-LTE version, specifically because of this post which claims that the Z500 will never receive an update because the hardware is not supported by nougat.
We can't confirm this and cannot make any further comment on this false report. Unfortunately, we have no information on the release of Android 7 for your device.

Note how they could immediately tell me when the update is comming for the LTE version but have no information about the non-LTE version. Perhaps it is not supported by Android 7 after all and they are still figuring out a way around this? I'm not an expert on this topic, someone more skilled than me might want to take a look on the post I linked above, I can provide translation if needed.
Still not sure whether to buy this or the S2. Similair prices, I like the ZenPad more for the hardware, but the S2 is well served with Custom Firmware and is thus sure to be up to date for many years...
About the IMG GX6250 no being able to run Nougat, that's a lie. See here about the new Asus Tablet running Nougat, it uses exactly the same GPU as the Zenpad S3 10.
It make no sense, why would Google support a device in Android 6.0 and stop supporting the same device in Android 7.0 unless it was a old chipset and hardware configuration. If Googe was at odds with Mediatek it would be news...

I would send it back for a exchange on a new replacement.
Thinking about getting one of these for my daughter to replace her aging first-generation 10" Samsung tablet. It seems more cost-effective than getting a Samsung Tab S2 (or the new and ludicrously priced Tab S3) for pretty much the same - or better - spec.
I know rooting is pretty much never going to happen (so I'd never consider one of these for myself) but how bad is the Asus bloatware/crap that they've bolted on top of Android? Would a new launcher (such as Nova) fix most of it without needing to root?

The Asus bloatware and launcher really aren't bad at all and actually grown to like it. I'm coming from an N7 2013 and a series of Moto Droid that were as close to stock android as possible.

Bought mine specifically for a decent resolution 4:3 device. Fought a bit with the bloatware to get it disabled to my liking - in particular some of it absolutely trashes the performance (I forget which though, this was months ago).
Coping without root. Only tend to use that for AdAway, so am using JumpGo as a browser - and almost none of the other apps I use are ad supported so it's not too terrible.
Would love to see a proper AOSP build for it. The hardware is brilliant but as it stands it's simply a stop-gap for me until something better with similar properties comes along with decent software.
