Android Tablet Discussion

I was thinking that a Generic Android Tablet Discussion thread would be a good idea. No matter the brand , maker size etc. Talk about them here.
Im debating between the Archos 101 and waiting to see if the Moto tab is good.

I have been keeping a keen eye out for the variety of higher end tablets and here is what I have sort of come up with so far:

They all have there merits, and the minor things that make them not so great. But here is a list of the gamot of features you can look for. Some of the tablets have alot of them, some have none, its basically what you want to do with it:

I know they are poppping out of the woodwork now. My biggest thing is that the majority are really expensive. Like the new Toshiba announced today is $540. THat is why Either the Cruz or Archos will match all my criteria. But the nice thing is that there seems to be a ton of different options.

I've been disappointed with the IFA ones as almost all of them have 3G which means here, onerous data contracts or ridiculous prices w/o.
Archos underwent feature regression(e.g. no GPS), and has some whacked prices for the 70 & 101. The rest seem kind of useless to me too small and at least the smallest two don't have any way of expanding storage which makes them kind of useless as anything other than a portable music player.
The Viewsonic is the Olivepad one? Didn't seem to be all that great.
Toshiba Folio MIGHT have been nice, but that Tegra will likely make it expensive.
...just too many hawking 3G and not enough that have useful extras like higher res cameras, GPS, mics, and maybe bluetooth... i.e. I'm just meh'ed by IFA offerings... Witstech A81-E is still looking good and they just got another new fw release 8/31...

Good catch, forgot the toshiba one. Here is what I am looking for a tablet:

Which matches up with the samsung tab, but the British price I found had it at over 600 British pounds, which converts to over 1000 US dollars.

Damn that is expensive.
Im mainly looking for a ereader, web surfer, watch some videos on trips, and check my gapps when on wifi.

Check out the stream tv elocity pad. No 3g, but no gps ether. the reason why everyone puts on 3g is because it's the only way to get google apps on it, until google changes their requirements for google apps.

My wishlist is 2ghz processor at least 50gb harddrive maybe even (dare I say it) windows 7. I would like my tablet to replace my laptop. Android just isn't ready yet.

I think a 2Ghz CPU, as of right now, is over powered for android. I have a Gentouch78 tablet that runs at 600MHz and it seems to run OK. My 1GHz nexus one has had no issues, and I have it multi tasking several apps at once sometimes. It will get really hot, especially when I toss the car charger on it while its doing all that, but never seen it slow down to unresponsiveness. As for the HDD space. I dont use mine much for multi media, so 50gb would be overdoing it for me. Just the ability to have an SD card slot would be enough for me, that right there is 32 gb.
Now dealing with the android OS itself, this is where things are starting to get wierd. You have 2.2, which is really a phone OS, you have 3.0 which is really a tablet OS, and so the current samsung tablet is supposed to be 2.2 and will get 3.0, but now this 3.5 is where it gets confusing. Some of the stuff I have been reading is stating that 3.5 is going to be an entirely different OS completly, or at least have an entirely different usage beyond that of a tablet or cell phone. And that you will have to buy an entirely new piece of hardware to use it because samsung already said their current tablet wont get 3.5 when it comes out, but i twill get 3.0. This is making me think that 3.5 may be the google chrome OS, which from what I am hearing I am not a total fan of. So basically, the idea as I understand it, is that the hardware will just be the input/output device and all the applications will be stored on teh cloud as well as the work being done will be done on the cloud. This is all nice and dandy until either 1) everyone gets on all at once and bogs down the system or 2) the cloud or network goes down and the device is worthless. Thats why I like android right now. If you have no data connection you can still do work. Now some things on android that do run off the cloud, like the GPS, if you need to reroute and you loose the data connection, since all the work is done on the back end you cant get anywhere until the data connection comes back.
Since Android is a full fledge Linux OS I think it can do whatever you need it to do, you just need to port the apps over. So i think it can replace a laptop, but there will always be certain things that make a laptop easier to use that are unrelated to the android OS, like a real keyboard. With phones, for instance, I still feel more comfortable texting on a physical keyboard on my blackberry then I do on the virtual keyboard on my nexus one. Now can I develope a web page, photoshop some images and toss them on the web page, with android? If they ported the apps over then sure why not, the physical keyboard will just make it easier. But as soon as you start talking windows 7 you are changing the entire hardware requirements (ARM CPU versus an x86 CPU) which will allow you to run your favorite web development software and photo editing software, and now your 50gb of disk space will be all chewed up with the OS and applications but no room for media, and with the new hardware requirements the price goes up (not like the samsung tab isnt expensive either) but then the bottom line is its still awkward to use because of the lack of a physical keyboard.
Now I am just using web development/photo editing as an example, simplier tasks, like email and web surfing, will require less and are easily done on the android OS. But the bottom line is to use the right tool for the right job, outline your requirements and find a solution that best fits your needs. I believe that android will be a decent laptop replacement if all your doing with your laptop is surfing the web and sending email but if your trying to do less casual stuff, like photo editing and web development, then android right now is obviously not enough, but in the future it might be. It goes back to the age old question, does hardware push the software industry, or does software push the hardware industry?

@mothy: They're all very nice and all..but taking out the GPS is like taking a step back.....Price is nice, but I'm sure there'll be cheaper WITH GPS before too long.

maybe..but for me I have no use for GPS on a tablet....but that is just me. Just like all new technologies price points will get better with maturity of product.

Hmmm.... looks like they took a screenshot of an android VM running on ubuntu and photoshopped it into their device. If they don't have any pictures of the tablet in action, I'd be really dubious...

Finally I ordered this one, so will post some review when it arrives.

So I tested tablet I ordered few weeks ago and realized that this is the same device as Advent Vega. I test quadrant benchmark and got 2200 points without any customization of rom.
Screen is nice and response is fast. I can recommend this one.

Some pretty impressive numbers there, and a very complete selection of benchmarks.
Would seem like the CPU in the GS2 is at least 2x more powerful than the Hummingbird in ours. Also some impressive GPU numbers.
Thing is though... the original Galaxy S was like 6-8 months ahead of the curve in pretty much every facet of the device. Even now, no other device on the market can compare with the Super AMOLED screen. The Galaxy S2 however has some impressive specs, and a very cool looking (and very thin) package, but it doesn't feel like it's going to be the "step above the rest" that the original was.
Guess we'll see when it's actually released!

Not that it matters, but that's got to be some of the highest quadrants ever recorded.

That looks very promising. I could upgrade my cappy to that for sure. To date i have not seen anything worth upgrading to...

I wish it was a 4" screen. Wouldn't want a 4.3" one with that resolution (personally). Because I'm on a two year contract I'm hoping the Galaxy S3 is leaps and bounds above the S in display and processor technology... and comes in a 4" variant for battery savings.

I'm really on the fence about it due to the screen size (for battery life, size of the handset) and the resolution. I may be able to live with the lack of resolution, but I'd have to see battery life numbers before I even think about swapping out my captivate.

Just got mine today very impressive and fast. Very responsive and thin.
Camera is brilliant and video recording wow best out there.

I was really looking forward to the galaxy s 2 but I am thinking its gonna be awhile before it is released. I find it hard to believe with the infuse on the way (but to the best of my knowledge also with out a release date) that samsung would cut their own throat by following the infuse with the galaxy s 2. I have been eligible for an update for awhile so I am thinking there is going to be allot of competition when it finally arrives. IMO samsung has really dropped the ball by not releasing here sooner, especially if it has to face the iphone 5. At this point it seems like the sgs 2 will be doa as the next killer phone if released in the fall.

that score in antutu is quite impressive! holy crap that's fast tegra 2's need to run at 1500 mhz to beat that!. the 3d benchmarks are likely heavily held back by a cap on the fps just like the captivate is already. i have gotten 491 points for 3d alone in antutu with a certain kernel and rom combo and that wasnt even with the gpu overclocked or fps cap removed like some of the vibrant kernels and old captivate 2.1 kernels. could do.
i want to see that thing run without any fps caps and some kernel tweaks! no overclocking.

I might upgrade next year. I think it's a good to give 6 months to a year before getting a top of the line handset.
That's enough for bugs to be noticed (and hopefully fixed), for community development to take off and for the apps to catch up with the new phone's technology. Correct me if I'm wrong, but right now the only apps that can take full advantage of the Sgs2 processors are benchmarks.

yeah but is it using the same type of internal memory? that is the biggest bottleneck of any device or computer is the *hard drive*
the internal memory in current phones is single channel read OR write crap.
and please dont say ddr2 memory.... thats different and only helps a little in comparison to the issue with the storage memory

I think I'll just wait for what samsung promise to have a 2ghz dualcore nxtyr or later, I'm still in my 2yr contact though

i like the coment at the end "best smart phone period!" says it all!
that said i am a little disapointed with the 3d performance of the dual core phones. though the tegra is a powerful application processor and the orion is fast beyond description the open gl performance isnt much beyond what the galaxys already does. was samsung just that far ahead in that area or is there power to be unlocked in these chipsets?

Why on earth would u want to upgrade to Galasy S2?
They have so much potential and best tech in screens, internal storage, cameras, processors, and good design builds in past YET lately they rush everything (unfinished drivers, bad gps, same 16GB internal but they could have 64 and average camera and cheap plastic to save on costs) so that they can copy iphone because they want some of their success. i personally hate iphone, but every other company copying them just drives apple to think they r the best.. and personally they did make the right choice on A5 to use powerVR543 because even dual VR 543 is faster than quad-core mali400, (big mistake for Samsung as mali400 alone is almost twice weaker than PowerVR 540 used in previous galaxy, which confirms in benchmarks) and NO 3D in galaxy S2 which puts LG optimus 3d and HTC evo 3D in front. and 3D is the future with more and more 3d movies out. and same wvga res that has been since winmo 6.0. sure u don't need the very highest res in a phone, but when u connect it to HDTV via hdmi u will have to rethink that, but then again does galaxy s2 even have HDMI?? Here where things become worse building a phone with large surface area due to 4.27inch screen and full plastic yet copy iphone in trying to make as slim as possible makes it extremely breakable as the phone will slowly start bending over months as u keep it in ur pocket tightly while playing sports etc. This used to happen with motorola razer
And to top this off Android 2.3 DOES NOT fully support multiple cores, well it supports but doesn't take advantage till 3.0 honeycomb (or 3.1 for phones), so if samsung doesn't give u an update AGAIN, or rushes it out full of bugs like they did for galaxy s, ur phone will never see it's potential
And i also got a bit of info from a tweeter a few month back where it was said that samsung is working on quad-core processor for next year and chances are the next one will also be 3D. This goes well in line with guad-core Tegra 3 to be out this fall, and sony NGP already running quad-core.
Point is unlike galaxy S which had at least the best GPU on the market, Galaxy S2 doesn't have anything that stands out. Sure u have super amoled plus, but others will have higher res, and dual-core is MAINSTREAM now. And it will only be a matter of month before this phone be obliterated by it's succesor.
Also from the lawsuit that apple has recently put on samsung might force them to restart making innovative designs like they did prior "galaxy"

You're wrong in several different ways.
1- There's very little point in putting 64gb of storage on a phone. 16/32 internal + 16/32 sd card is way more than enough for me and for 99.9% of users;
2- Reviews of the sgs2 camera place it as one of the best in the market, not sure I'd call it average;
3- Apple's lawsuit is bs and I honestly doubt it will affect anything on the long run. Android and touch wiz are quite different from Ios in important ways;
4- Why do you need 3d on a phone? Where are the apps for it? Why would you watch a 3d movie on a 4.3 inch screen? It'd probably kill the battery before it was over. Maybe, it'll eventually offer some real world advantage, but right now it's just a gimmick;
5- The Sgs2 supports hdmi out via micro usb through mhl technology. Google it;
6- It's wrong to question the build quality and durability without having ever seen the phone upclose. So far, I've seen nothing but praise on reviews and previews. Plastic not only keeps costs down, it also lowers the weight. And since when is making a phone slim apple's idea?;
7- I don't have the expertise to comment on the cpu and gpu, but the benchmarks seemed impressive as hell to me;
8- Screen resolution could be higher, but super amoled technology is so far ahead of the curve that I bet it will more than make up for it.
In short, why upgrade to sgs 2? Best cpu on the market (according to engadget review), best screen on the market, one of the best cameras on the market, bt 3.0+hs, microusb hdmi out, usb on the go (according to gsm arena) and the fact that the galaxy s is already a great phone.
Obviously, there'll be a better phone, eventually, that's the way it is in the tech world, but right now it seems to be a fantastic device, as engadget review shows.

I dont care the phone is sick and I can't wait to get one. I love my sammy captivate and knowing that's the same thing all jacked up is great. 3d is dumb especially on a phone. Plenty of storage. It will be great to finally have a flash. Super amoled is amazing so super plus is better...what more could you want. We don't need to dwell on tons of worthless info. The phone is gonna be sick and the best anybodies had. Everybody wants it and so do I.

Your focus should be on software updates
Your focus appears to be on hardware. Although hardware is important you need to also consider choosing a manufacturer who provides timely Android updates. You don't want a super phone with great hardware specs running an old version of Android because the manufacturer/carrier won't upgrade to the latest Android.
Those who say "you can just put cyanogen or a custom rom on it" don't listen to them. Without drivers and other source for your specific phone it will take a long time to get a stable custom rom on your phone if the manufacturer never releases source/drivers for that specific model you own.
Also, Motorola/Carrier locks their bootloaders. Could be a problem with custom kernels.
Samsung is famous for not really updating Android on their phones.
HTC is probably better on updates.
Basically, get a Nexus phone. The new Galaxy Nexus should be released in the US sometime this century hopefully. Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S are both made by Samsung, but Google controls the operating system updates on the Nexus line of phones.

Haha, yes! You are right! I Focus too much in the hardware.. I always wanted to have a powerful beast in my pocket, a high end device that fits inside of my pocket that brings to me the possibility to perform as many task as i want just like in a desktop computer! I don't really complain too much about the android version, what i really care about that the android version it comes with is that it works fine, i mean, no bugs, no auto reboots, for example, few months ago i bought a Motorola Defy, quite nice device and still with stock 2.2.1 android, i overclocked and twaked it manually.. But it is still laggy, internet browsing is horrible.. A bit dissapointing.. i've been watching many reviews of Motorola Atrix 2 and Samsung Galaxy SII, I Love the samsung, but i thought that Atrix was more powerfull.. By the way, you are right about Motorola and android update.. I Think that Atrix 2 will die in 2.3.5 .. And the only way to get a Motorola with ICS is switching to Droid Razr.. Thats a bit unfair.. Thats one of the reasons to consider the Samsung.. Is quite pretty also, i wouldn't move from 2.3.3 if it works fine.. You know what i mean.. Something useful, powerful that fits in my pocket and a device that never fail to my daily use..! Google Nexus doesn't exist in Argentina and won't exist i think Here are laws that prohibits to import from other countries.. A bit hard to explain, my dream would be move to Miami and get my high end device for 100 bucks with a 2 years from Verizone.

Take the sgs2, have no regrets .
Softwarewise you can put any of the custom ROMs on it if you are bored and need something new.
Cyanogenmod is very good.

I saw that too on Engadget, and I do not know if it's a good news or a bad one .
That "thing" seems to be quite the same as out G7+, so I wonder if we'd be able to flash the ICS FW straight from that one, before our device will be officially updated
By the way, I believe it's just the same device , slightly modified due to the recent apple/samsumg legal battle.

I think they may have been testing the sale of the 7+ in diff regions, and may release this as a universal release. except for US of course getting a Wifi only most likely.

Aside from the fact that it has a lower clock speed on the processor, (possibly a different, cheaper processor, e.g. Tegra 2), and the fact that it has no LED flash, lower resolution front facing camera; if you look carefully at the official press photos, you will notice that it is a bit more "touchwizzed" (look at the icons, they are a lot like the icons on the phone and the OG Galaxy Tab 7, (with colored squares behind each app icon.) It seems that this may in fact be Samsung's answer to the new ASUS 7in, $250 ICS tablet. If this is Samsung's "budget tablet" then it makes sense. If this is true, it will show up on all of the carriers, (subsidized and contracted, of course,) and may hit retailers as a sub-$300 tablet. At that price point, this makes sense.

This is becoming a bit ridiculous. The Tab Plus is not even properly introduced to market and we already have another version out?
This new one will be less expensive, maybe much less.
I would not be surprised if people start getting confused with
tab 7
tab 7 2
tab 7 plus
tab 7.7
and then all wifi and wifi/3g versions..
Why did they present it at a small show in Prague instead of MWC in few days? Does it make sense to you?

I stand corrected. I was getting a bit confused. The $250 tablet, (which is still little more than a CES teaser,) is slated to be the ME370T. (I won't comment on build quality yet, since ASUS has serious issues building even their top of the line devices, i.e. Transformer Prime) The tablet I was referring to was the official $250 EeePad MeMo (ME171) which will have a 7-inch WXGA (1,280 x 800) IPS capacitive touchpanel, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8260 processor, a gigabyte of memory, 16GB / 32GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.2 megapixel front / 5 megapixel rear camera (with 1080p recording), an A-GPS sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor and a micro-USB port. There's a 4,400mAh Li-polymer battery reportedly good for some 8.5 hours of video playback, and Android 4.0.1. The unit checks in with dimensions of 7.8- x 4.6- x 0.50-inches (and a weight of 14.2 ounces). Seeing as they haven't even announced a release date for the Tegra 3 ME370T, I have a feeling that the Galaxy Tab 2 is going to be competing with the similarly specced ME171. I hope that clears up any confusion I may have caused with my lack of clarity.

Its not quite a teaser. Reps from my company had it in hand at CES. It's pretty much official and will likely be a game changer, if Asus doesn't botch the roll out.

Unfortunately, it was a prototype unit, (and it felt like it,) While I don't doubt that Asus intends to bring it to market, I do doubt that they'll be able to make it very well at that price point with the types of parts they are claiming. Also, it's ASUS, they'll botch the roll out. They always do. Their devices always launch with build quality issues.

I wasn't there personally but a prototype makes sense. Looks like we're going to have to wait and see. I agree that a budget tab makes the most sense. With the 7+ being the big brother.

Will the average consumer understand the difference between tab plus and tab 2?
Many will think a Tab *2* is newer and better then a Tab *Plus*. like a S 2 is better then a S plus.

I don't know. Depends how they market it. The cynic in me says that the 7+ will become an after thought to both consumers and Samsung. It wouldn't be the first time they've done it.

Xoom Media Edition 8.2 specs/post-ICS query

Hi there!
I am planning on buying a tablet at the end of the month and i am choosing between the Acer Iconia A110 (with its microSD card slot), the Nexus 7 (with its quad-core GPU) and the Motorola Xoom 2 Xyboard/Media Edition 8.2" tab (with its screen size, surround speakers and great camera).
I am not convinced by the build and durability of the Acer/Google tab. And i always thought the ideal (i.e. well-balanced & a good compromised) tablet screen size is an 8" one. That is why i want to ask about the Motorola tab and also in relation to its post-Ice Cream Sandwich update.
1. In terms of the CPU speed is the advertised speed the "base" speed or is it underclocked?
2. Would you know if the GPU is single or dual channel? And does it matter?
3. Is the wifi single or dual band? And again does it matter?
4. Comparing it to the iPad 2 or say an AMOLED screen Galaxy tab would you consider the screen resolution/contrast/colour/dark colours of the Xoom 2 is as good as the others?
5. For a 1-year old tab wil i find any issues or problems in terms of gaming or compatibility with games or apps?

I would strongly reconsider considering xoom2 me as one of options. If you need 3G than, yes, but otherwise xoom2 me is an old device.
The strongest part: screen resolution at 8.2 inches and build quality (at least a feeling of it).
Weaker points are short battery life, lot of restart on 3.2 so You must be sure to have ICS on it, closed boatloader so NO Roms to choose from and total absence of any custom development and device support in any third party tools.
Speed is not breathtalking and theres a lot of hiccups and short freezes and theres not many accessories for it on ebay.
I bought my 608 because of quite cheap promotion but otherwise woulnd choose it mainly because battery and closed bootloader.

I am not into bootloading or rooting or JB. I still prefer the normal ways to update my tablet. I still a screen size of 7" is a tad small. if it was say between 7.2" or 7.7" then it might just be better.
Xoom 2 ME's specs might be old but it seems it is still capable. But again, having the latest gadget would probably be better in terms of specs, compatibility and future updates.

The Xoom 2 ME is much nicer now that it's got Android 4.0 on it, but I'm not holding my breath for Android 4.1, let alone 4.2 (out next week allegedly?).
Plus, it still has the issues of weird power and volume button placement.
If my Xoom 2 ME broke today, I'd buy a nexus 7 tomorrow.

This is a Motorola pre-google-purchase device... That means, it will update the normal ways twice a century... I've heard it has been updated twice already... So, ICS is pretty much end of the road for this device and due to its [irony]spetacular[/irony] sales, I'm quite surprised that Moto itself just did not end-up saying device will remain in Android 3.2.2 for better user experience, do not expect anything else for this device, and, since there are no community ROMs for it (perhaps now that a ClockworkMod recovery is in progress we might see something, after all, my guess is that any hacks that work with RAZR to boot alternative roms might work with XOOM 2)...
Really, I would only consider a Xoom 2 if you get it really cheap... That is the reason I bought one, it was on sale from an operator for a fourth of its MSRP... And even then, it took me about half an hour to decide to buy it....

In my country they sell this for 200 euro and ipad mini for 339... . The specs are extremely similar, almost the same. I would choose again any time xoom me.. I can use android like a desktop os and i don't feel like missing anything from my desktop... Ics performance is solid, stable. Is not as smooth as ios put i can live with it. Apps are getting better and better, and i don't feel i miss anything from the huge ios app collection...
