So I have a hairline crack in the bottom right of my S7 Edge, and was wondering if it's still water resistant. So I went and took a nice hour long, hot and steamy shower. After the phone was dunked in water, exposed to steam, and getting poured on, I don't see one sign of damage so far, everything works fine and I don't notice anything near the crack. DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF, IM JUST SHARING MY RESULTS.
I really don't think many would be daft enough to try this ?

Yea, I got an LG G6, so I thought "nothing to loose, right?" ?
I have back glass cracked like spider web and I have snapped a lot of photos under water and my s7 edge is working fine, I wasn't worried for water going inside my phone because under cracked glass is a thin plastic layer that keeps device isolated from water. I'm not saying that you are 100% safe to put you phone under water with cracked glass, I'm just sharing my experience

Well this would answer my question that I have been looking for since I got a hairline crack on my s7 edge. I haven't dunked it in water and still not going to but at least ill know it will be safe from a drink spill or a splash.

I'm a little pissed right now... I woke up about 3 hours ago, my screen was perfectly scratchless. Now although, i got 3 scratches only from having the phone lay on the desk (display up), typing 2 SMS and trying out new widgetlocker designs.
I didnt do anything else. No putting in pocket (although that worked fine for weeks now), no smashing it on the ground, not even laying it in the sun. Nothing!
Now i got 3 scratches from basically doing ****. One of the 3 is almost 5mm long! Can you belive this? I'm speechless and dissapointed. And worst of all, i cant even explain it! It would be ok if i had had the phone in the pocket, or i threw it around or something. But this, this just sucks

that's why it's still advisable to put a Screen guard on the DS even though it's a gorilla glass. Remeber, the screeb is scratch resistant but not scratch proof. Good thing is that I applied a SP on my DS since day 1.
Yeah, i applied a screen protector after some minutes of having the phone.. i have the phone like 2 weeks and all the protector is full of scratches... i hope it didnt get to the screen.. yeah.. its not scratch proof.. its the opposite.. scratch magnet haha

Sand grains can easily scratch the screen...

there is just no possible way that your fingers(or nails) could have scratched the gorilla glass screen. even if it was normal glass it is not possible
but sand(or more accurately SiO2) can scratch your gorilla glass...Easily (as its hardness is 7 on the mohs scale)
it is possible that your screen was scratched earlier & you didnt notice it (sometimes a scratch is not visible till its wiped)
or you could have had some sand particles in your hand..
forget about the current scratches & get a screen protector immediately to prevent from more damage
& btw gorilla glass is only scratch resistant not scratch proof
(but there arent many common things that can scratch it other than sand ofc)

It definitly wasnt scratched earlier. The sad thing about the 5mm scratch is, that its always visible. The other two are just visible when the screen is off, but the big one is constantly popping out (its more or less breaking up the colours like a prisma)
Yeah its gotta be sand although i would be more happy if it were diamonds
I just put on a protector which came with casemate. Although it has bad reviews (the glass protector), it works quite fine on my device. What i most liked on the gorilla glass itself was that it was very fingerprint resistant. I ll see if the glass protector can keep up with that.
I knew that gorilla glass wasnt scratch immune. But its kinda ironic that only a tiny grain of sand could do so much damage, whereas nothing happend for the past 7 weeks under completely different (tougher) conditions.

I meant the dust and the many sand particles in my pockets and the constant rubbing and bouncing around in my pockets.
So this summer i have to buy a screen protector if i go to the seaside (lots of sand there) . But i will only keep it on for the stay there. I like the screen the way it is !!!scratchless
I'm on my second desire s now and both times I managed to scratch the screen in just a few days of ownership. My previous desire, whilst picking up a couple of fine scratches seemed to survive a bit better somehow, at least on my current desire s it is not very noticeable.
You get over it eventually! I don't use a case or screen protector because they make the phone and screen look too crap IMO. I just accept that it's a working piece of kit and it's gonna pick up wear and tear, although I do my best to avoid damaging it.
You have my sympathy!
I'm also a nudist. Phone already dropped once. Cursed much. But screen is still ok so far.

Unfortunately I drink at the weekends, and alcohol and the phone don't mix well, dropped phone twice and have managed to fortunately only scratch the paint from the case bottom left corner and top right, only a couple of tiny scratches on screen, consider myself lucky and I don't have so problem

Had my Desire S for more than 3 month already. Phone in out of pocket and fingers sometimes a ...little.... bit sandy because of my engineering work.. my screen still look as good as new... My older Motorola XT720 (which is almost coming to a year) screen is also look as good as new too.
I love how htc's commercial that included the WS leak was on a beach.

Yup. Fell on the floor. If it happened on a rougher surface it might leave some mark.
Just bought a Z3 and it has the faintest hairline crack across the middle of the back glass, which to be honest really doesn't bother me at all, as I got the phone for a very good price, but just wondered will this make the phone NON-WATERPROOF ?
I'm not sure. There was a story of one Z2 surviving in over 10m/30ft of sea water for several weeks with no water damage. In the article there were a few pics and the back cover was severely cracked.

Wow, thanks for that tip, just did that test and the pressure increased each time, so I guess its OK then, right time to jump in the bath
Are you really going to take your phone with you in the bath and submerge it for no reason? Hot water viscosity will be different to cold and easier to get inside your phone.

No only kidding, as long as the z3 holds up if it gets wet whilst out on a run or using in the rain, I'll be happy. Not going to be submerging it any time soon.
I'd put some duct tape on it. Good to go.
There is a pressure test in this forum that using service menu that will give you an idea. Mine has a crack but is still waterproof. By that, I've only had it splashed and dipped quickly in a pool. I wouldn't take it very deep as I imagine the water pressure would open the crack a bit wider and let water in (however I'm not sure if the glass is the phone colour or if the glass is clear and the phone colour is a plastic cover behind the glass which would mean help with stopping water getting in after a crack)
Ok, So Hey guys that know me from years past. Figured I'd pass something on.
The LG V10 Glass seems to be very acceptable to low level shock. One of the things I reviewed constantly before buying was how durable the phone was. Throwing it and all, with the glass being unharmed.
Well I have dropped my V10 in the rain, and left little scuff marks on the plastic and even chips on the camera ring, but never any damage to the screen. Not even a scratch.
BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.
The other night I was sitting in a chair on my porch and the phone fell out of my pocket. So what is that?? Maybe a 1/2 foot drop to the ground. and it cracked my screen with spider web cracks going in 4 directions from the crack.
I am really OCD about damage to a phone, and have in 8 yrs, never cracked a screen. Usually I have some sort of case, but as the V10 was supposed to not need one, and because of the fingerprint scanner issue, I never got one. Now i'm deciding rather to fix the screen or just get tempered glass and deal with the crack since the phone still functions perfectly.
What do you guys think?
Strange that I read everyone say they drop their phones because I dropped mines multiple times on multiple surfaces. I wear suits at work and put my phone in the chest pocket area and sometimes I miss and the phone never broke. No case no screen protector no nothing. You don't have insurance?
The variables of the angle of the drop and the point of impact make being OCD about screen damage tiresome.
Put ballistic glass on your phones and forget about it ...
It's cheap insurance.
In the past month or so my S7 Edge-F has accumulated about 12 hairline cracks and 6 spider web cracks, but the display and digitizer work fine, the only thing not functioning is the fingerprint sensor, but I usually face-recognition so the broken fingerprint sensor doesn't really bother me. Anyways, I wanted to know if my S7 Edge was still water resistant, because if not, I would need to reseal it and replace the glass (aka, a pain in the ...).

I put my S7 Edge in my bathtub, filled in up to where it was about 1/2 a meter (2 feet), I also warmed the water up a little above room-temp. I put my phone in and tilted it to get air stuck in the ports out. I also had CPU-Z running for monitoring. I left the phone in the water for 30 minutes (I recorded it with my 4k camera so I could go back to check for bubbles. my results:
-No bubbles
-No Sensor problems
-No damage
(I also went swimming with the phone for about an hour, recording underwater videos and didn't find anything wrong with the phone afterwards.)
I think it's safe to say, it's still water resistant.
I just felt I should share this since most people worry about this when the crack their water-resistant device.
I Recommend you put a screen protector over the cracked glass, and if the back is cracked use a skin.

sadly my back panel cracked and i got a replacement from china but when i push air into any of the ports i feel it coming out of the other so im not sure if its safe for me to dunk it in water

Took the s8+ to the pool several times over the week. Was fine. Just need to wait for charging port to dry; but the s8 gives warning sign if you plug your phone with a wet port. No worries at all.
Washed mine under the tap , delicate flow, after eating greasy food.
Haven't dared since the day my Sony Xperia Z3 went in the bath with its IP68 rating and I was greeted with bubbles as the phone filled up!
I got a replacement but still, twitchy bum time
Had a bucket of water poured on mine by a young family member. It was in an otterbox defender and didn't have any issues at all.
I always take my S8+ with me, also under water.
I don't know why, but I feel much safer than with my old S7 edge.
Charging... I always user wireless charge at work and in my car, so my S8 is always full at home and I never need an cable .

Is that in fresh water? Or salt water? I've heard salt water is no good to any of the water resistant devices. I just ordered my device so I'm doing some preliminary learning

It would have to be freshwater purely based off the fact tadpoles cannot survive in saltwater. Chlorinated or salt water can attack and erode the rubber gaskets and seals that protect your device from water. Overtime these could weaken, leaving your phone exposed to damage from moisture, not to mention salt water is a good conductor of electricity.
Here in Australia a screen replacement for this device is $700AUD so I've just got mine in a Lifeproof case regardless of any IP ratings.
Just in case anyone is wondering like I was, I cannot recommend the Lifeproof FRE for Galaxy S8 as there's such a big gap between the front plastic screen cover and the actual LCD itself. I basically have to hammer the screen to type and it makes these "clacking noises" as the screen comes in contact with the plastic.

Since you're in Australia... Take the case to the place of purchase and ask for a full refund. According to Consumer Affairs, if a product does not work as advertised you're entitled for a replacement or a refund.
Lifeproof cases are very expensive (over $AU100). You expect them to be perfect at that price!
Well I had my first experience
Spilt warm coffee on my phone.
Ran to the hotel sink and washed off the phone.
Blow dried it to get rid of the moisture in the speaker grill and charging port. Good as new!!
Cheap waterproof case...
Last week I decided to take an image under water (fresh). Put her in at least three different times. Got a notification saying there was water detected in the charging port and to make sure it is dry before using. Today, my s8 is still working like new. Here's the image I got (unedited)!
